I start by talking about how I want to focus on love moving forward; love of the people, art & things I love. In this episode, I give a review of the Zane Carney concert I saw in San Francisco, CA on January 30th. Then, I give a review of the Foster the People concert in Oakland, CA on January 31st. I also give tips on how to cope with loneliness.
On this week's show which I forgot to mention where we were recording from, we're at Universal Studios Florida to see Foster the People who are performing during the Mardi Gras concert series. From the anthemic Pumped Up Kicks to the infectious grooves of Houdini, Sit Next to Me, and more, we break down the setlist, the atmosphere, and the moments that made this show special. Whether you were there in the crowd or wish you had been, this episode captures the essence of what makes Foster the People such a dynamic live act. Mark Foster is the frontman for Foster the People, which rocketed to fame in 2011 on the strength of their very first single, ‘Pumped Up Kicks'. Mark talks about growing up as a pastor's son in Cleveland; nearly joining the military but choosing instead to move to L.A. to pursue his music dreams; falling into addiction and getting sober; feeling afraid to perform on SNL after becoming famous overnight; and his process for getting into a flow state in the studio.Mark also reflects on the meaning of ‘Pumped Up Kicks', more than a decade later – and shares how current events influenced the themes on the band's newest album, ‘Paradise State of Mind'.Check out the new album here: https://store.fosterthepeople.com/products/paradise-state-of-mind-cdLinks from the Show: Pumped Up Kicks (Official Video)Lost In Space (Official Video)Paradise State of MindFor more conversations like this – with guests ranging from Tom Hanks to Bjork to Jason Sudeikis – go to https://www.thegreatcreators.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On the heels of Foster the People's first new album in seven years, their excellent, uplifting and highly danceable new album Paradise State of Mind, hear from the project's creative mastermind about key moments in his musical journey: how he learned to play piano by ear as a kid, and was later inspired to play guitar by hearing Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on a kiosk at Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; how he discovered the value of a local music community through his city's metalcore scene; how his dad talked him out of joining the Air Force and persuaded him to move to Los Angeles to pursue his music dream instead; what he learned from the rejection and adversity of his early years in LA; how he overcame the fear he felt after having a hit with "Pumped Up Kicks" that he might not be able to do it again; what it felt like to open for his heroes The Beach Boys; how his songwriting has evolved since then, and more. Paradise State of Mind is out now, and you can get tickets for Foster the People's upcoming shows here.
Max and Sam really get their wheels spinning on their new music picks for the week, then they send their little hopes sky-high by looking at some of the biggest and best summer festival line-ups dropping all this week, like Rolling Sets and Beyond the Valley. Equal parts Minnesotan music scene veteran and Laurel Canyon devotee, Willie Wisely remains that rare bird mixing profound power pop with vaudevillian showmanship. In his four decades of music making and crowd playing, Wisely has followed the muses of Singer, Guitarist, Producer, Songwriting Collaborator, Composer, and sometimes Clothes Horse. On episode 2 of Volume 5, Greg is joined by the amazingly talented multihyphenate JAKE HUFFMAN!!!Connecticut born and bred artist Jake Huffman creates a euphoric realm of indie pop rock, bringing his anthemic energy to a global audience. As lead vocalist and drummer, the multi-instrumentalist was previously known for his time in the viral alt rock band, McLovins. Having taken the time to rediscover who he is as a solo artist, Huffman returns with a complete arsenal of new music, all of which has been entirely written, performed and produced by Jake himself. His latest single “Martyr” was written, recorded and produced at the world renowned PowerStation New England Studio and forms a cohesive ode to his upcoming EP. With compelling discourses, the track explores a commentary about dying on a hill, as he explains, “The lyrics aren't about what I personally believe. Everywhere I look people are spouting their beliefs while contradicting themselves in the same breath. The world has become so polarizing and I wanted this song to encapsulate that energy.” With the perfect punch of redemption, his musicality comes to life. Huffman's anthemic vocal energy rises atop crashing choruses, soaring melodies and the alt-rock infused rhythms he's been known to possess. With broadening soundscapes and truly impeccable capability, it's Huffman's hope that listeners will take what they need from the song, as he explores a journey into creativity. Accompanied by a sound that pulls deep from his rock roots and reaches far into what can only be described as the sound of the 20's, his latest single consolidates his status as an exceptional talent. Huffman's latest project is an amalgamation of his musical influences and vast heritage of experience. At the age of 14, Huffman and his band McLovins posted on YouTube a cover of Phish's “You Enjoy Myself” from his parents basement in Connecticut. Overnight the video went viral and sparked a rabid following of fans around the world. Since then, he has shared the stage with Blink-182, Foster The People, BB King and The Flaming Lips. Huffman has garnered humbling praise from the likes of the Rolling Stone, US Weekly, NPR and legendary XPN Radio Programming Director and DJ Bruce Warren, as well as also having caught the attention of Emmy, Grammy and Tony award-winning producer and composer Bill Sherman (Hamilton, In The Heights, Sesame Street) and Glee producer Michael Novick. Meanwhile on television, the musician has left an imprint as a composer and lyricist for Sesame Street, writing dozens of songs for artists like Ed Sheeran and Leon Bridges. With plenty more on the horizon, it looks like 2023 will be an explosive year for Jake Huffman.CONNECT WITH JAKE HUFFMANWebsite - Instagram - YouTubeSUPPORT THIS SHOW
It's the hit of the century! It sounds like it's from the 1980s and the 2080s at the same time! Everyone and their pet alien loves this song, and that's why, to punch it up, we knew we had to enlist the help of Connor Ratliff, a legend in the podcastiverse for his dedication to dissecting utter minutiae. And Connor did not disappoint, at one point obsessing over the syllables in a single measure to the point that Evan yelled "YOU HAVE GASLIT YOURSELF!" Our intrepid astronauts veer across the Milky Way and discover connections from Dua Lipa's Levitating to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jon Ossoff, and beer-brewing Trappist monks. Guest: Connor Ratliff Walk-in music: 'I Drink Beer' by Dan Reeder; 'Got To Give It Up' by Marvin Gaye; 'Pumped Up Kicks' by Foster The People.
