In this episode of Music You're Missing, host Brendan Jeannetti sits down with Peter Boyd, the Talent Buyer for Boston Calling, to explore his unique journey into the music industry and the behind-the-scenes challenges of organizing a major festival. Peter's story takes us from his college radio days to his current role at one of Boston's most iconic events, all while offering invaluable insights for those looking to break into the industry.Peter shared that his career path was anything but linear. Starting as a college radio host, he stumbled into the music scene, eventually finding himself bartending at a live music venue in Boston. It was during this time that he began managing bands and booking shows—skills that would later be instrumental in his role at Boston Calling. He emphasized the importance of taking initiative, noting that he started booking shows simply because he was "bored" and felt stuck in the service industry. This entrepreneurial spirit set the foundation for his eventual leap into festival management. At Boston Calling, Peter and his small team orchestrate the three-day festival, which has grown into one of the city's premier events. Peter highlighted the importance of preparation, explaining that much of the festival's success hinges on detailed planning long before the gates open. "If everything is done correctly ahead of time, all you can do is wait for something to go wrong during the event," he explained, underscoring the unpredictable nature of live events. One of the key takeaways from the conversation was the importance of local talent to Boston Calling's identity. The festival is unique in its commitment to featuring Boston-based artists on its Orange Stage, giving lesser-known acts a platform alongside headliners like Megan Thee Stallion and Hozier. Peter described how booking local talent was a deliberate choice, helping these artists gain exposure while enriching the festival with a homegrown feel. He also stressed that for emerging artists, the key to getting noticed is not just having a strong online presence, but being active in the live music scene—whether that's through consistent gigging or putting yourself out there. This year's Boston Calling showcased Chapell Roan's rapid rise to stardom. Peter recalled how her main stage set at Boston Calling drew an unexpectedly massive crowd. He noted that while the festival's team saw her potential early on, even they were surprised by how quickly she connected with audiences. Her performance, he said, mirrored the kind of breakout moments Boston Calling has become known for, giving artists a chance to make an indelible mark on the festival circuit. For those aspiring to break into the music industry, Peter's advice was straightforward: be persistent and don't be afraid to start small. Whether it's managing a band, taking photos at shows, or volunteering at events, the key is to get involved and make connections. Reflecting on his journey, Peter emphasized that success in the music industry often comes from being in the right place at the right time—but more importantly, from being ready when those opportunities arise.Tune into this episode of Music You're Missing for more insider tips, stories from the festival circuit, and a deep dive into the creative chaos behind Boston's largest music event.
In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles welcomes award-winning writer, director, and producer Eric Green. They dive into Eric's concert experiences, starting with his first concert at age 12 when he saw Debbie Gibson thanks to his mom. Eric reflects on other notable concerts, including several Lollapalooza festivals in the 90s, and iconic shows by Green Day, Aerosmith, and Ringo Starr. The discussion also covers his most surprising and disappointing concert moments. Eric talks about his background in filmmaking, highlighting his documentary 'Life on the V,' which explores the story of the short-lived Boston music video TV station V66. He delves into the significance of V66 in promoting local music and its addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's library and archives. The episode concludes with Eric sharing insights about his pop culture blog, Greens Party, where he reviews concerts and features interviews with musicians.BANDS: ACDC, Aerosmith, Beck, Ben Folds Five, Black Crows, Body Count, Brian Johnson, Butthole Surfers, Claypool Lennon Delirium, Cypress Hill, Debbie Gibson, Del Fuegos, Dinosaur Jr., Eagles, Eddie Van Halen, Elastica, Extreme, Foo Fighters, Garbage, George Harrison, Ghost of the Sabretooth Tiger, Green Day, Hole, Horde, Ice T, Jake Giles band, Jane's Addiction, John Bonham, John Lennon, Kiss, Letters to Cleo, Lilith Fair, Living Color, Lollapalooza, Metallica, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Moby, Nine Inch Nails, Paul McCartney, Pavement, Pearl Jam, Primus, Ramones, Rancid, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Rollins Band, Ruby, Screaming Trees, Sonic Youth, Sound Garden, The Beatles, The Cars, The Clash, Vans Warped, Yoko OnoVENUES: Avalon, Boston Calling, Box Center, Citi Field, Fenway Park, Hat Shell, House of Blues, Madison Square Garden, Mansfield, Massachusetts, Orpheum Theater, Paradise, Wilbur Theater, Worcester Centrum PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708
On Episode 107 of the Guest Speaker Series, we welcome one of Boston's most prolific artists: rapper, singer, songwriter, poet, & performer, Najee Janey. With his upbringing consisting of influences from his musically gifted Dad, and Grandmother who is a published poet, Najee seemed destined to be the kind of artist he has become. Najee talks in-depth about his latest EP ‘Break Free', a body of work that instills a refined version of the poetically jazzy sound he's coined for himself over the years, combined with a few new genres he dabbles in. He also discusses his reasoning as to why the project is exclusively available on Even.Biz instead of streaming platforms in an effort to take back full ownership of his art as an independent artist, while putting the power of its worth in the hands of his fans & supporters. Mike & Najee also discuss a variety of topics, ranging from his appearance on the CBS Morning Show in Boston, to performing on the biggest of stages like Boston Calling & GLD Fest, to how sports and music are more alike than you'd think. He also shares a number of historical facts that will blow your mind, including how old the oldest mummy in the world REALLY is, his Mount Rushmore of most impactful individuals in human history, which ancient civilizations need more attention, and the oldest forest in the world is actually located somewhere in the United States (in a state you'd least expect it).
