Dr. Kaeli Swift knows crows. And she's watched them do some pretty extraordinary things. In fact all corvids-the family that includes crows, jays, magpies, and others-have a well deserved reputation for intelligence and fascinating social behaviors. Dr. Swift's research has provided insights into how crows interact with us, with their dead, and with each other. She joined host Nate Swick from Denali National Park where she is working with Canada Jays to talk about corvid culture and cognition. Also, some spectacular, if slightly wrong, bird art in Corpus Christi, Texas. Thanks to our friends the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival for sponsoring this episode. Register today! *NOTE* We briefly discuss the recent news regarding the elimination of eponyms in bird names. We want to remind all our listeners that we are not experts on this topic and this is a complex issue. We do feel very strongly that all birders should always feel and be included in the birding community and that as a community, we should strive to increase inclusion and equity in a diversity of ways. It's November again, which means it's time for the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival! We were able to get down a bit early this time and do some scouting and spend time soaking up the birds before the fest started.Main Story Begins at: 20:35Show notesBuy me a CoffeeBirding is the World Brazil tripSpring ChirpRio Grande Valley Birding Festival San Diego Bird FestivalAOS English names for birdsBirdaPlaces we mention:Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife RefugeSabal Palm SanctuaryResaca de la Palma State ParkValley Nature CenterSanta Ana National Wildlife RefugeEstero Llano Grande State ParkLa PlayaeBird Trip Report:https://ebird.org/tripreport/170474Birds mentioned:LimpkinAmerican Flamingo Blue Bunting Intro Bird Call: Long-billed Thrasher (Recorded: Cameron County, Texas November 2023) Outro Bird Call: Great Kiskadee (Recorded: Cameron County, Texas November 2023) Connect with us at...IG: @Hannahgoesbirding and @Erikgoesbirding Twitter: @WeGoBirding Facebook: @HannahandErikGoBirding Email us at HannahandErikGoBirding@gmail.com Website: http://www.gobirdingpodcast.com

For this episode, I recorded 3 smaller interviews at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, in the Birders Bazaar. My first guest is Victor Lawrence, an educator and falconer, with Wildlife Revealed and Sky Kings Falconry. He tells us a little about falconry and his love for birds. My next guest is Dorian Anderson, a guide, photographer and avid birder who some of you might know for his almost 18,000 mile birding trip by bicycle, across the United States back in 2014. While we don't talk about that, I do ask him a few questions about how he got into birding. My final guest is Sue Griffin, Chair of the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival and the Education Director of the Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society. She tells us about her birding background, some of the birds people come to the Rio Grande Valley to see, including the bird of the episode - the Great Kiskadee. The ABA is gearing up to announce its 2023 Bird of the Year but we're not ready to say good-bye to the year of the Burrowing Owl just yet. With that in mind, we welcome Colleen Wisinski and Susanne Marczak of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Burrowing Owl Recovery Program to talk about their efforts to protect the local population of Burrowing Owls and what they've learned about the species in doing so. Also, Nate is back from a great Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. On this episode I talk with Dave Irons, a top birder, an eBird reviewer, prior regional editor of North American Birds, author of the new book Field Guide to the Birds of Oregon, and a really educational and interesting guest on the podcast. Enjoy. Here is a link to buy the Field Guide to the birds of Oregon on Buteo Books. I mention the episode with Dave's wife Shawneen Finnegan. Here is a link to that episode on Apple Podcasts. You can find links to several other platforms on the Bird Banter Website. Dave talks about the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. I strongly recommend it to any birder who wants to attend a great festival. Please leave a review and rating on the podcast feed of your choice. Until next time. Good birding. Good day!
Stephanie Seymour has been a musician her whole life and an avid birder for the last 15 years. Her latest album, There Are Birds, brings together her love of birds and vast musical talents. Don't be fooled by the album's name: this is not an album of bird calls. It's an eclectic mix of pop and rock-and-roll, blended with lyrical birding stories from Stephanie's adventures. Tune in to learn the stories behind Stephanie's bird-named songs, her inspiration for the album, and her work for the Hawk Migration Association of America. Many birders throughout the ABA Area have been paying attention to the ongoing situation in South Texas with regard to the construction of the border wall. So many of our favorite birding sites have been under threat, and the situation has been alternately sad and triumphant and frustrating. Filmmaker Otilia Portillo Padua offers her insight into the often fraught affair with Birders, a short documentary recently released on the streaming platform Netflix. She joins me from Mexico City to talk about the film and her journey from Texas to Veracruz through the eyes of birds and the people who love them. Also, exciting news about a hummingbird oasis in Arizona and thoughts about the recent Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.
HARLINGEN, RGV - Birders from across North America have given two thumbs up to the 26th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, which has just concluded in Harlingen, Texas.Birders interviewed by the Rio Grande Guardian says the festival was “very well organized,” and that it was “good value.” They say everything that was promised in the brochure, such as field trips to see rare birds, was available and that the program ran on time.According to studies, visiting birders contribute almost $2 million to the Valley’s economy. In the above podcast, we interview visiting birders Jean Folsom of Colorado, Jeannette Bourgoin of British Columbia, and Mike Burke of Maryland.
WESLACO, RGV - An interactive map has been created as part of the Explore RGV project highlighting 44 sites where birders can see exotic and rare birds in the Rio Grande Valley. The new “Adventure Guide” has been launched to coincide with the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival that takes place in Harlingen, Nov. 6-10.The announcement came at a board meeting of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council. LRGVDC oversees Explore RGV. The project was kick-started last year with a $350,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. Its website and mobile app has around 800 sites across the Rio Grande Valley listed as fun places to visit.“Explore RGV has been about a year-long project for us. It is a very comprehensive, interactive website and mobile app,” Ron Garza, executive director of LRGVDC, told the Rio Grande Guardian at the conclusion of the board meeting.“Today we announced two exciting developments for the Explore RGV project. One of them is the unveiling of the adventure guides.”The above podcast features an interview with Garza.

Ben and Bill recorded this episode while sitting outside in southeastern Ohio. They chat about Ben's recent experiences at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival in Texas, and the upcoming events at the Space Coast Birding Festival in Florida. Nemesis birds, missed rarities, hoped-for sightings, smelly vans, dump birding, birding skill-building and field-sketching workshops, Tamaulipas and Rain Crows, and shooting video versus recording an audio podcast are all topics that arise in this episode. Then, Bill drove Ben to the airport.
Host Bill Thompson, III, interviews Jeff Bouton, the birder who found an Amazon kingfisher near Harlingen, Texas at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival.
