In this episode—which is number 113—host Ivan Phillipsen explores the fascinating crossroads of tradition and technology in the world of birding. With a mix of personal anecdotes and professional insights, he dives into the enduring charm of printed bird field guides and the meteoric rise of mobile birding apps. Whether you're a seasoned birder with a weathered Sibley guide or a tech-savvy explorer armed with Merlin, this episode will resonate with your bird-loving heart.Ivan takes listeners on a thoughtful tour of how both tools have evolved over time—from the early days of illustrated field books to the AI-powered, globe-spanning apps of today. Each format is examined through multiple lenses: usability, identification features, natural history information, and emotional value. As the episode unfolds, listeners are invited to weigh in on this modern dilemma: pages or pixels? The conversation raises important questions about the future of birdwatching tools and what they mean for the next generation of birders.~~ Leave me a review using Podchaser ~~Link to this episode on the Science of Birds website Support the show

Director Kirt Graves and actor Zeb Metzler join the guys to talk about The Birder on Broadway's production of The Rocky Horror Show. The show is a musical with music, lyrics and book by Richard O'Brien. A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter, unveiling his new creation, Rocky, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man complete "with blond hair and a tan." Click on the link above for show times and ticket information. Then Kristen Ambose from Point Mortgage Corporation is in with more details on the the changes in interest rates, and what it REALLY means for folks looking to buy a home. This stuff can be pretty complex, but Kristen has many years of knowledge to help steer you in the right direction! The podcast is recorded in a tent at The Hay Literary Festival. Hamza is there to talk about his latest book ‘Be a Birder' and Claire was there to cook a date and tomato tagine with him after he finished his long and busy day. Hamza is an extraordinary guest to cook alongside, gracious and charming, he's a once in a lifetime, next-generation David Attenborough type contender. The world and all it's wildlife salute you Hamza. Claire and Hamza talk Sudanese food, the perils of having your grandmother marry you off each time you return home, silent food to eat in a hide, pet monkeys, how bird spotting is really like Pokemon, rugby, Scotland and Pop-Eye The Sailor Man.Hamza's book, 'Be a Birder' is available here.https://www.octopusbooks.co.uk/titles/hamza-yassin/be-a-birder/9781856755108/Follow Claire at 5 O' Clock apron on Instagram. https://www.instagram.com/5oclockapronIf you have enjoyed this podcast it would be an immense help if you could rate, subscribe or leave a review.Recipe:TOMATO, DATE + CHICKPEA TAGINE2 onions, finely sliced or chopped 4 garlic, finely chopped Olive oil, 2 - 3 tbsp2 tsp ground cumin2 tsp ground coriander1 tsp ground ginger1 large cinnamon stickSalt and pepper, to taste700g chickpeas, I used @boldbeanco400g polpa (chopped) tomatoes40g dates 1/2 preserved lemon, finely chopped Couscous, cooked as per packet instructions, to serve Harissa, to serveCoriander, roughly chopped, to serveIn a heavy bottomed saucepan with a lid (or use a tagine dish) heat the oil over a moderate heat and cook the onions until golden brown (around 10 mins), add the garlic and cook for a couple of minutes more. Blitz the tomatoes with the dates. Add the ground spices and the cinnamon stick to the onions and garlic and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the tomatoes and dates, rinse out the container in which you blended them with around 80mls of water, add that to the pan. Add the chickpeas (I didn't bother draining them). Season the mix with salt and plenty of black pepper. Lid on and cook over a moderate / low heat on the stove top, or in the oven, at 180C for around 25 - 30 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat, check the seasoning, remembering the preserved lemon is salty, add the preserved lemon and stir well. Prepare the couscous as per instructions on packet (or do as I do in the reel, and toast the couscous in a dry pan until nutty shade of brown before carefully adding the boiling water and lemon juice). Serve the tagine with the couscous, coriander and harissa. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Burn your clothes and seek consent because we're talking about director Nate Dushku's sophomore feature, Birder (2023). Spoilers: we strongly recommend this one. Think American Stranger by the Lake, complete with full frontal nudity and dangerous sex. But there's also plenty of dark comedy here, as well as sex positivity and diverse representation. Plus: Michael Emery's amazing lead performance, a twisty in media res beginning, snapping turtles, and an ending that raises the film a whole half star. Questions? Comments? Snark? Everyone dreams of attaining eternal glory. This can come in many forms, perhaps winning a major battle, or inventing the next life saving device. Or maybe all it takes is snapping a photo of a single small bird. This week on the podcast Will and Theo discuss how life seems to slow down after listening to podcasts on 2x speed. Will has a story of a man who wrote the book on comedy and we're here to judge the results. Will also has a report of which countries have the most prison escapes by helicopter. Theo brings a news report of fake pandas in a Chinese zoo, and how one man's bird photo has made him the messiah of the birding community.
