This week on Birds of a Feather Talk Together, we're revisiting one of our favorite interviews with legendary birder Peter Kaestner—the first person in history to see more than 10,000 bird species in the wild. While John continues his birding adventures in New Zealand and Australia, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit this incredible conversation. Peter recently came up on the podcast when Shannon recognized one of his recordings of a Rwenzori Turaco, reminding us just how remarkable his birding journey has been.Peter is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished birders in the world. Over decades of global travel, he has observed more bird species than anyone else in history, visiting remote corners of the planet in pursuit of rare birds, endemic species, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.Field Museum ornithologists and curators of birds John Bates and Shannon Hackett join RJ and Amanda Pole to talk with Peter about world birding, bird identification, rare birds, international birding travel, conservation, and the adventures that come with a lifetime spent exploring the natural world. From incredible sightings and close calls to lessons learned from thousands of birding expeditions, Peter shares fascinating stories, hard-earned wisdom, and a passion for birds that is impossible not to appreciate. If you love birding, birdwatching, rare birds, wildlife travel, ornithology, bird conservation, bird identification, and extraordinary birding stories from around the world, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Here are links to our social and YouTube pages, give us a follow:YouTube InstagramTikTokBlueSky

She reflects on the cascade of fears that hit her in those few seconds, the divine and ancestral protection she feels carried her through, and what the whole terrifying experience revealed about the very real safety gaps facing birders and pedestrians on roads like Valley Road. In this episode I'm joined by Anton Schultz for an honest and wide ranging conversation about birding, passion, and personal growth.Anton's journey began like many others. A love for nature as a kid, a family trip to Kruger, and a field guide placed in his hands that opened up a whole new world. What started as curiosity quickly turned into deep commitment, eventually leading him to take on a full birding Big Year.We talk about how his approach to birding has changed over time. From list driven birding and chasing lifers, to slowing down and finding real joy in everyday species. Anton shares what it's really like to attempt a Big Year on a budget, including the planning, pressure, setbacks, and emotional highs and lows that come with it.We also explore how birding shaped his identity, influenced his academic path, and helped him grow as a person beyond the birds themselves. This is a reflective episode about why we bird, how we mature through the process, and what we learn along the way.Visit our online store to get your birding related merchandise at great prices https://www.thebirdinglife.com/online-storeIntro and outro music by Tony ZA https://soundcloud.com/tonyofficialzaLinks from show:Follow on Anton on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/bird_the_world/Red Lark photo credit Dylan Vasapollihttps://www.birdingecotours.com/

Send a textEver feel the ground shift under your feet and wonder how to keep standing? We sit down with author and pastor Courtney Ellis, author of Looking Up: A Birder's Guide to Hope Through Grief, to explore a surprising guide to hope: birds. From mockingbirds that remix the sounds of the neighborhood to sparrows that sing through storms, we unpack how creation itself teaches us to live with uncertainty, grieve honestly, and find rest without checking out of real life.Courtney shares why not knowing can be merciful, especially when our brains crave a full map we're not built to carry. We talk about spiritual practices that keep us present—taking the next small step, looking up instead of spiraling, and honoring the quiet work that rarely trends. Sparrows become a lens for ordinary dignity in a world chasing peacock shine and platform pressure. If you've ever felt invisible, her reminder that “God sees” lands like water in dry soil. This is a warm, grounded conversation for anyone navigating grief, change, or the relentless hum of “do more.” If you're craving presence over performance, mercy over mastery, and a faith sturdy enough for uncertain days, press play. Send us a textWhat if the simple practice of looking out your window could change the way you carry grief? We sit down with Pastor Courtney Ellis, author of Looking Up: A Birder's Guide to Hope Through Grief," to explore how everyday birdwatching becomes a practice of attention that steadies the soul, awakens faith, and gently leads us toward hope. From the first "spark bird" that turns curiosity into a habit, to the quiet patience of waiting for wings to appear, we trace a path that's grounded, embodied, and surprisingly accessible—even for restless minds.Courtney opens up about losing her grandfather and how choosing to be a granddaughter before a professional reshaped her approach to mourning. Together, we name the cultural gap around grief and offer kinder rituals for moving through loss without rushing past it. Along the way, birds become teachers: vultures as tender witnesses and “priests of the wild,” goldfinches as bright messengers in hard seasons, and even city pigeons as underrated icons of resilience and beauty. Poetry from Wendell Berry and Mary Oliver weaves through the conversation, adding language that can hold both sorrow and joy.If this resonated, subscribe, share with a friend who needs gentle hope, and leave a review to help others find the show. Birder and author Christian Cooper says learning to identify bird calls feels like unlocking a sixth sense. Birding by ear is a skill that takes time to develop, but you'll start to recognize patterns with practice. Christian says mnemonics are a great way to remember bird calls. Some birds have well-known mnemonics, like the “Oh sweet Canada Canada Canada” of the White-throated Sparrow. But if those don't work for you, make up your own!More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. Birder and game designer Elizabeth Hargrave has made it a mission to bring these two things together and her bird-themed game Wingspan does just that. Wingspan has been covered by the New York Times, Smithsonian, and Science magazine among other places and has managed to elicit interest at a time when enthusiasm among the general public for both birding and board games are at an all-time high. She joined host Nate Swick in 2019 me to talk about both. Also, the Philadelphia Eagles are getting in the bird conservation business, which opens up opportunities for all sorts of bird and professional sports crossovers.  Subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a rating or a review if you are so inclined! The British Isles are remarkable for their extraordinary seabird life: spectacular gatherings of charismatic Arctic terns, elegant fulmars and stoic eiders, to name just a few. Often found in the most remote and dramatic reaches of our shores, these colonies are landscapes shaped not by us but by the birds. In 2015, Stephen Rutt escaped his hectic, anxiety-inducing life in London for the bird observatory on North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the Orkney Islands. In thrall to these windswept havens and the people and birds that inhabit them, he began a journey to the edges of Britain. From Shetland, to the Farnes of Northumberland, down to the Welsh islands off the Pembrokeshire coast, he explores the part seabirds have played in our history and what they continue to mean to Britain today. The Seafarers is the story of those travels: a love letter, written from the rocks and the edges, for the salt-stained, isolated and ever-changing lives of seabirds. This beguiling book reveals what it feels like to be immersed in a completely wild landscape, examining the allure of the remote in an over-crowded world.Support the showConnect with me at... Warbler Migration in Ohio with Kenn Kaufman

Every spring in Northwest Ohio, the shores of Lake Erie transform into a birder's paradise. Birder and author Kenn Kaufman, who lives in this area, says that of the many species that migrate through here, one group of vibrant, vivacious songbirds stands out from the rest: warblers. Trees leaf out later in the season along the lakeshore, making the tiny warblers easier to see as they forage for food. Northwest Ohio has earned a reputation as the Warbler Capital of the World among birders in the know. But Kenn wishes everyone could glimpse the beauty of warbler migration, even if they don't make it to the Warbler Capital.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org.Want more BirdNote?
