WESLACO, Texas - Famed businessman Alonzo Cantu has thrown his support behind the work of the Rio Grande Valley Broadband Coalition. The RGVBC unveiled its RGV Broadband and Digital Opportunity Plan at the offices of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council. The coalition noted that the Valley still lacks reliable internet access, holding the region back in a world that increasingly depends on digital tools. The coalition says its plan is a “bold initiative to ensure every home, business, and community anchor institution in the region has access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet.”Cantu, president and CEO of Cantu Construction and Development, had a front row seat for the coalition's presentation. He was seated next to Sergio Contreras, CEO of Atlas, Hall & Rodriguez, LLP., Both Cantu and Contreras are members of the Texas Broadband Development Office's Board of Advisors. To advance digital development in the region, the RGV Broadband and Digital Opportunity Plan focuses on:Expanding broadband infrastructure to connect unserved and underserved communitiesIncreasing digital skills training to help residents navigate online education, work, and servicesPreparing a local workforce for in-demand, high-wage technology jobsEnhancing tele-health access to improve healthcare outcomes and lower costsSupporting small businesses in adopting digital tools to grow, compete, and better serve their customersJordana Barton-Garcia, director of the RGV Broadband Coalition, said the plan has been developed through a multi-sector partnership of local governments, internet providers, schools, healthcare institutions, small businesses, and nonprofits. She said the plan addresses long-standing connectivity gaps that have limited education, jobs, healthcare access, and economic growth across the region.“Broadband is the foundation for opportunity in today's economy,” Barton-Garcia said. “This plan represents a turning point, ensuring that all residents — no matter who they are or where in the Rio Grande Valley they live — can access the connectivity they need to thrive.”At the conclusion of the, Barton-Garcia thanked all the stakeholders that had come together to agree on a plan of action. She said the coalition is already working to implement some of the plan's activities and is actively seeking partners and funding opportunities to put the full plan into action and accelerate digital opportunity efforts. It was at this point that Cantu asked if he could speak.Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian's website to read the full story.Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.
WESLACO, Texas - President Trump said he would pause his planned 25 percent tariff duty on imported goods from Mexico due a “very friendly” telephone conversation with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbuam.Trump said the tariffs would be put on hold for month while further discussions with the Mexican president take place. Trump's tariffs were scheduled to take effect Tuesday, with a 25 percent duty on all imports from Mexico and most from Canada. Energy products from Canada would have had a ten percent tariff imposed. He also plans a ten percent tariff on Chinese goods.Trump explained his decision to hold off on tariffs for Mexican imports on his social media platform, Truth Social. He wrote: “I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican soldiers on the border separating Mexico and the United States, These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our country.“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a “deal” between our two countries.”Sheinbaum for her part said Trump has agreed to a long-standing request from Mexico to get serious about stopping illegal weapons going south into Mexico. According to the Mexican government, more than 90 percent of guns seized in Mexico come from the United States.U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez has another theory as to why Trump halted the implementation of the tariffs - stock markets around the world were tanking at the thought of trade wars between the United States and its top three trading partners - Mexico, China, and Canada. Asked to respond to reports that Trump had paused the imposition of tariffs due to a telephone conversation with Sheinbaum, Gonzalez said:“Well, I don't know what how productive a short phone call might have been, but I do think that the dropping of futures yesterday, the dropping of the stock market today, just on speculation of tariffs, had a very deep impact on the administration and what was coming. I think that woke up the president and probably the administration and economic advisers to not go through with the tariffs.”Gonzalez said the imposition of tariffs would have been “devastating” for the country. “It would have been devastating for the state of Texas more than any other state in the country, because Texas is the most reliant on trade with Mexico, and obviously in South Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, it would have been devastating. It would have had a direct impact on our small businesses and our local economy,” Gonzalez said. Gonzalez made his comments in an exclusive interview with Ron Whitlock of Ron Whitlock Reports. WESLACO, Texas - Javier Guerra, Channel 5 News morning co-anchor, gave the introductory remarks at the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council's first ever State of the COG.COG stands for Council of Government. LRGVDC represents Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties.Guerra pointed out that the gathering represents an evolution of the LRGVDC's annual report, a meeting traditionally held during the second week of January. “Historically, the LRGVDC would convene its board members in this very room to review the outcomes of the current year and outline performance goals for the year ahead,” Guerra said.He said it would also present the group's fiscal budget as a testament to the sound stewardship of the finance department. “This new format elevates that tradition, fostering greater transparency and offering a platform to showcase how the LRGVDC continues to thrive, innovate and serve the Rio Grande Valley through its various programs and collaborative efforts,” Guerra said.“The LRGVDC remains steadfast in its mission to act as a conduit - a conduit between our communities and the state and federal agencies working within our region.”Guerra added: “Today marks a significant step in the strengthening of our commitment to improving the lives of Valley residents and regional development as well. This event is the first of its kind, and it serves as a springboard for the broader community engagement, not only with municipalities, but also directly with the residents of the Rio Grande Valley.”Editor's Note: Here is an audio recording of Guerra's introductory remarks:Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - On the day he announced his retirement as chancellor of Texas A&M University - effective a year from now - John Sharp was happy to recall his love for South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley. In an audio interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Sharp recalled that back when he was running for office and he was in a bad mood, his secretary would change his schedule for the day and send him to South Texas. Asked why South Texas is so special for him, Sharp, who was born and raised in Victoria, said: “I don't know what it is about the Valley and South Texas. But you're exactly right. I'll tell you this story that nobody knows except my secretary at the time. But when I was running for office, and I've had been in a bad mood or whatever it is… you know, I'd be pissed off at the world or whatever, my secretary would automatically cancel whatever I had on the rest of my agenda and send me to South Texas. I'd go down to McAllen or Weslaco or Brownsville or go to Laredo… and it's just the warmth of the people in South Texas that just makes me love the place.” Sharp said the region reminds him of his days in elementary school. “It's a special place. It reminds me of the elementary school I grew up in. Lots of, you know, majority Hispanic students and stuff like that. Just good folks that were always warm to be around. I don't know how to explain it. I just love the place and I love people down there and I wanted to do something in that neck of the woods and I'm proud we did.” Among the things he has done for the Valley are open a higher education campus in McAllen, start a workforce training program at the Port of Brownsville, start the Healthy South Texas Initiative, continue to support the Promotoras program in colonias along the border, and appoint Manny Vela as chief operating officer of the McAllen facility. Asked about the Healthy South Texas program, Sharp said he knew from the very beginning it would make a positive impact. “So, the first meeting we had, if you remember, we had a meeting in a Brownsville civic center. And we had it in a little room. We put out invitations but not too many. I mean, we just ran some stuff in the in the papers and a radio station saying, hey, if you want to know if you're pregnant, or you're going to be pregnant, and you want to know how to take care of your unborn child come here. Doctors and folks are going to be here to talk to you,” Sharp said. “And Lord Have Mercy. I think it started at 9 or something and at 7 o'clock in the morning there must have been 500 people, maybe 1,000 in line waiting to get in. I'm going Holy crap. There were thousands of people that came in there and that's when I knew that there was a need for Healthy South Texas.” Asked about its impact, Sharp said it is hard to measure but he knows it connects with many people. “I think that it's made a big difference with a lot of people. People that have diabetes, to prevent diabetes. And to educate folks. I mean, we have a lot of people that don't have personal physicians. And so, they depend on the emergency room and it's only when somebody gets sick… so they don't get that kind of advice.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
WESLACO, Texas - The Council for South Texas Economic Progress is working on an agreement with Startup Runway, a Frisco-based company that brings manufacturing and tech companies across from India. COSTEP CEO Adam Gonzalez said his organization will make sure any potential companies are well-vetted. Then, he or his colleague Rick Carrera, the group's director of economic development, will connect with economic development groups in the region to see if the companies are a good fit for their community. Recently, COSTEP brought three Indian consultants to the Rio Grande Valley, including Jyothsna Kondapuli, executive director of Startup Runway. The consultants heard from the larger economic development corporations in Hidalgo and Cameron counties. One of the Valley groups hoping to land an Indian tech or manufacturing firm is Weslaco Economic Development Corporation. In his pitch to the consultants, Weslaco EDC's executive director, Steve Valdez, stressed the central location of his city. “So, the first thing that we talk about (to prospective clients) is that we're centrally located in the region. If South Texas is one of your regions, then we like the fact that we're right in the middle,” Valdez said. He said Weslaco is popular with warehousing, distribution and food processing companies. “I think our numbers are increasing in the Mid Valley because we're getting sandwiched in and now being centrally located means a little more because we're growing as a region all together,” he said. With a population getting close to 50,000, Weslaco is one of the bigger of the small cities and one of the smaller of the big cities in the Valley, Valdez said. “We consider ourselves a small community but with large community amenities,” he said. Most of the growth in Weslaco is happening in the north of the city, Valdez told the consultants from India. “Every five miles (in radio) we basically double our population,” he said. He also said Mid Valley International Airport, which is located in Weslaco, just received a $5 million grant to continue expanding. EDINBURG, Texas - Growth, growth, and more growth. That was the message Carlos Garza, project manager for Edinburg Economic Development Organization, made a pitch to investors from India. The event was hosted by the Council for South Texas Economic Progress and was held at the Casa De Palmas in McAllen.“One of the things that we boast here is that we are the fifth fastest growing city in Texas. That's Edinburg. We are actually ranked 12th in the United States. Why is that? Because we have over 140 subdivisions in preliminary review, construction and construction review. That totals over 5,700 lots,” Garza said.“If you are looking for a house you can go to Edinburg, you can go to Weslaco and go to McAllen. But we have them. There's so much growth going on right now in all of our region, which is great.”Edinburg is growing so fast there is not a lot of industrial or office space, Garza explained. “We have one percent availability, a vacancy rate of one percent, for offices. That shows you that there is no office space available in Edinburg. And a four percent vacancy rate for industrial. Every time some listing comes up, they go. They go so fast, Garza said.“The target areas that we're looking at, healthcare, biotech, logistics, manufacturing, they're all coming in fast into Edinburg and the region, because they know what's going on and what's happening.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian website to read the full story. WESLACO, Texas - Robots were on the mind of businessman Mike Hernandez last week. The Texas A&M University System regent had two public speaking roles and on both occasions he mentioned robotics. One of his speeches was given at the Port of Brownsville. Hernandez was on the bill when Gov. Greg Abbott and Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp announced plans to build a $30 million advanced manufacturing trading center. The other speech was made in Weslaco, when Hernandez gave the keynote address at a Governor's Small Business Summit.Brownsville speechIn his speech at the Port of Brownsville, Hernandez said the new training facility was important because “the jobs in the future are going to come down a lot to… what I have distilled it down to, robotics.”Hernandez said that no matter what industry you look at, “there is going to be a robotics involvement.”He said: “So, if that's the future, we need engineers to be able to design these things (robots). We also need some hands-on people that have IT skills and also can turn a wrench and fix something.”Hernandez said these are very much new skill sets. “It has come about due to all the technology changes and advances that we've had. And Texas A&M is here to make sure on the workforce training side that we're on the cutting edge of that so that our workforce here has the tools and skills that no one else has in the country.”Another part of the training facility will be geared towards research and development, Hernandez said.“For companies that are here and future companies that are coming, (it is important) that they know Texas A&M is here to help them with their R&D needs. And with all those things, our hope is to create an economic development boom starting right here at the Port of Brownsville.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
The other speech was made in Weslaco, when Hernandez gave the keynote address at a Governor's Small Business Summit.Weslaco speechHernandez also mentioned Texas A&M's advanced manufacturing training facility in his speech in Weslaco. Even though it is being located at the Port of Brownsville, it has big implications for the Mid and Upper Valley, Hernandez argued.“Texas A&M has a big project going on in the Port of Brownsville. What we're building there is a huge workforce training center for advanced manufacturing and other skills that are needed for the industries that are going to be coming.“But beyond that we also have an area to do R&D, research and development and innovation for the companies that are coming into the Port. And why is that important to Weslaco, what is going on at the Port of Brownsville? The future of the Mid and Upper Valley is basically getting into the mass manufacturing business.”Before, Hernandez said, “it was all about maquilas and people utilizing cheap labor on the other side of the border to assemble things and put them together.”But, things are changing, Hernandez argued. “The future of manufacturing and really most businesses… is that things are going to be made by robots, not by humans. Humans aren't going to be putting stuff together. So, what's going to be most important are having people that can work on these robots when they go down because when a robot goes down for a company we're talking about thousands and thousands of dollars in losses, every minute that robot is down.”Hernandez continued: “The reason I'm saying this is because the Valley for the last 50 years has been, for lack of a better way of saying it, nothing more than that truck stop. Goods are coming in, the trucks stop here, fill up for gas, buy a hotdog. Same at the Port. Goods come in, ships are unloaded, and reloaded.“My vision and many other people's vision for the future of the Valley is that, for example, avocados come in and guacamole goes out. The raw materials come in here. We don't just fill up the truck and pass it on the way. We use those materials to make stuff.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.
In this episode I talk to two visual artists: Gabriel Treviño and Antonio (Tony) Antinori. Their bios are as follows: . . Gabriel Trevino is a self taught artist living in Brownsville, TX.His early work began in a solo exhibition at the University of Texas at Brownsville in 1998 recognized by artist Carlos Gomez. For over 23 years his work has been part of several group and solo exhibitions throughout South Texas and Northern Mexico. The art of Gabriel Trevino has also been published in news papers, books & magazines including the UNAM about border history and culture. His works are in several private collections and public displays including ongoing exhibition at ROCA at George Ramirez Performing Arts Academy - Downtown Brownsville, Texas - 2023 - 2024.You can follow Gabriel Trevino at on Facebook and Instagram.https://www.facebook.com/art.gabriel.trevino?mibextid=LQQJ4d https://www.instagram.com/brownsvilleartform?igsh=MXFmbm5ianlmMTk5eg%3D%3D&utm_source=qr . . Anthony Antonio Antinori Hernandez: My iconography and my technique have changed along with the mishaps that have happened in the world where I now live. The laws of my paintings have a story that is followed from phase to phase; like a chess game or like a poem, they are executed with great science. At times my artwork is seen and spoken with irrepresentable icons; it's like if I was alone all by myself, it's like if I was running an errant, it's if I see and at the same time don't see things, as if I was surrounded by large transparencies and layers. We must understand that my function as an artist / painter is to make things been seen by the receptor. I try to be like an alarm that enjoys my paintings or that it enjoys knowing their aesthetics, but enjoys more the responsibility of a needed consciousness . In my paintings there is a kind of a dialogue or feedback between representing my feelings and emotions and portraying the other side of me as an artist / painter. I almost always try to present the form of things, and that form is just a moment of the history of those things. Like portraying a frozen world; meanwhile, in reality everything flows and be able to see that those things are transforming and living. As Human beings, we must give value to the differences and not to the similarities. The more diverse our expressions are portrayed, the more cultured a society becomes. Thus, to me art is the highest expression of freedom . You can follow Antonio Antinori on Facebook and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/antinoritony/ https://www.facebook.com/aaantinori.180 . . . In addition to being one of America's great pitmasters, Fred Robles wears many other hats in the BBQ world. The 2019 American Royal World Series of BBQ Open Grand Champion runs his own butcher shop (Rio Valley Meats) in Weslaco, Texas, and is president of the Champions BBQ Alliance, a sanctioning body that's successfully into its third year. We talk to Fred about all of those things on Episode 219 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, plus ways to help out one of his Texas BBQ brothers who's battling cancer.
