June 23, 2023: A Note from Marguerita Cheng, CFP® Pro — I invite you to tune in for this week's episode of my podcast and video show, Margaritas with Marguerita, where for 15 minutes each Friday, we start the weekend learning from industry experts how to flex our financial muscles. Meet our guest: Robert Pagliarini, author, Badass Retirement Today's Topic: What is a Badass Retirement? Rita asks Robert: A Badass Retirement sounds interesting. What is it? I loved your Instagram post about retirees don't need to be bubble-wrapped. I noticed you post a lot about how the culture and the media portray older people badly. What do you mean by that? You say retirees have one job in retirement. What is it? Sometimes I see you in posts with a shirt that says "Retirement is not the finish line." Can you talk about that more? We often hear about "safe spaces", but you recommend creating an "unsafe space" in retirement. Why? Why do you think adventure is so important for retirees? About our guest: Robert has a Ph.D. in retirement planning and is a Certified Financial Planner. He's been working with retirees for nearly 30 years. He's written five books and his most recent is Badass Retirement: Shatter the Retirement Myth & Live with More Meaning, Money, and Adventure. This week we are talking Teflon bubbles, and how to be completely normal to avoid all criticism! We had some listener feedback which prompted us to consider how we manage to stay focused, and also feeling less hurt when you receive feedback which could throw you off-track. In the 'old' days we both would have felt this harder - so what's changed? As artists one of the things we need to learn is how to keep going and not be swayed by opinions. We recognise that some feedback can be helpful and share how we distinguish between them, two opposing views to keep at arms length, and a magic question to keep asking yourself so that you can get more grounded in whatever YOU are showing up and sharing. Quick Service Ideas (0:04:33) The holidays are a time of selflessness and giving. But then once New Year roles around, we too easily slip back into the hustle and bustle of our own lives. While we all are a little busier after the holiday season, people need service every time of year. Today we're welcoming Michelle McCollough on the show to talk to us about ways we can serve in 2021. She'll also be telling us how we can get our kids involved in the activity and help them understand why it's so important. Michelle is a speaker and CEO of DreamBoard Media. Interior Design Trends of 2021 (0:33:42) It's a new year and we all know what that means—out with the old and in with the new! And we think we're all more than ready to toss 2020 right out the door. However, this begs the question: what interior design trends from the past year will be following 2020 out the door? And what can we expect in terms of comfort, color, and entertainment from this year's interior design? Lucky for us, friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes is here to give us a sneak peek into this year's interior design trends and what we can expect to see in our homes in 2021. Winning the Lottery (0:56:35) We've all heard the age old phrase: “Money can't solve your problems.” But...it can take care of those care payments, medical bills, and the vacation you wanted to take... It seems like money can actually solve a lot of problems. This is why Americans spend about 71 billion dollars on lottery tickets every year—despite their odds of winning being worse than their odds of getting attacked by a bear. Nevertheless, someone has to win right? And for those winners, does all that money really solve their problems? Here to share his insight with us is financial advisor to the suddenly rich, Robert Pagliarini. Holistic Healing (1:14:59) Our next guest, Veronica Villanueva, learned the true meaning of taking matters into her own hands when she was diagnosed with incurable stage IV lung cancer. Being told she only had six months to live, she developed her own treatment plan which combined traditional western treatment, holistic lifestyle changes, and alternative treatments. After achieving what doctors had told her was impossible, she beat cancer. Now she wishes to help others take back control of their lives no matter what type of battle they're facing. Veronica is now here with us to discuss her incredible journey and what she has learned. Checking in with Teachers (1:30:04) Teachers have had to take on extra work to adapt their lesson plans for in-person and online classes, deal with more stress and frustrated families. So how can we support our teachers during this time and work with them to make sure our kids succeed during such a crazy school year? Here to share her advice for appropriately checking in with our kids' teachers is Dr. Amanda Witte, expert on family-school partnerships from the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools.
Today's Guest Joanna Hennon and I are back with another co-hosted episode! Today, we talk about identity: how to step into a new identity when we’re not sure what it looks like, why we’re sometimes afraid to step into a new identity, and why this stuff is so important. I’ve been doing a lot of identity work lately – I’ve just listened to my friend Cara Wilde’s new masterclass on identity (it will be available online very soon) and I’ve been doing a really interesting exercise with my coach Lisa Wechtenhiser. My guides, through Lisa, suggested I get into the space of my new identity and then fill out a diary/calendar based on what I would do if I were fully embodying that new identity. It’s led to me taking different actions than I’d be taking normally, which is opening me up to new possibilities. It’s a fantastic exercise. You know I’m into this identity stuff. I’ve talked about Cara’s New Identity Masterclass (the first version of it) many times, and I spoke about stepping into a new business identity on episode 251 of this show. I think we really get into the concept in this episode, and I hope you find it interesting and useful! Listen to this episode What You’ll Learn What is identity + why it’s important Can you change your identity + why would you want to How do we know what our current identity is How our current identity affects our life now How to get clear on who we need to be to live the life we want Why we’re sometimes afraid of shifting into a new identity What to do when it feels like life changes our identity for us + imposes something new What to do when you’re in between identities and feeling lost What this has to do with living proactively - not reactively What to do when we don’t want to let go of our old identity Why we sometimes we hang on parts of our identity that aren’t useful to us Why we need to be conscious of self-awareness + self-acceptance when doing identity work Why our true identity is our soul + whether or not we need to worry about that Things We Discussed 251 Holly Worton ~ How to Step Into a New Business Identity(now with downloadable transcript!)
