Welcome to the Komen Health Equity Revolution series on Real Pink — where patients, advocates, researchers and community partners come together to talk honestly about what's standing in the way of breast health equity, and what we're doing to change it. June is Pride Month — a time to celebrate identity, community and the courage it takes to live authentically. Today's conversation sits right at the heart of that. Because advocating for yourself, knowing your body and refusing to be dismissed, that's not just a health message. That's a love letter to who you are. Our guest today is Shelby Smith. She was 30 years old when she noticed something felt off. No family history of breast cancer. Young, healthy, going about her life as a wife and mom to a 7-year-old daughter. But she trusted herself — and that decision changed everything. Shelby faced a 12-centimeter tumor, a bilateral mastectomy, 16 rounds of chemo and 15 rounds of radiation. She did her own research, built her own notebook, asked her own questions — and came out the other side with a message she wants every young woman to hear: Know your normal. And when something doesn't feel right, advocate for yourself. Key Takeaways: Trust your instincts when something feels off Self-advocacy can change outcomes Being informed helps patients navigate treatment Cancer can affect more than physical health Including loved ones in the journey matters Chapters 00:00 Introduction: Shelby's Breast Cancer Story 02:07 Discovering a Lump and Seeking Answers 04:37 Diagnosis, Testing, and Receiving the News 10:07 Research, Self-Advocacy, and Navigating Treatment 17:33 Identity, Family, and Talking to Her Daughter 24:46 Life After Treatment and Advice for Young Women Learn more at realpink.komen.org and komen.org Real Pink, by Susan G. CELÝ ROZHOVOR V DÉLCE 68 MIN. Mluví o boji s virem HIV, Antonínu Holém i o tom, proč ho po pár letech baví měnit téma a dělat něco úplně jiného.
A breast cancer diagnosis may feel like it changes your entire life in an instant, but it doesn't get to define who you are or make all your choices for you. On today's episode of Real Pink, we're joined by Amanda Sangemino, a remarkable young woman whose diagnosis came at an age when cancer was likely the last thing on her mind. What began with a concern that was initially dismissed ultimately led her to trust her instincts, advocate for herself, and make a series of personal decisions about her treatment and future. Throughout the process, she was determined not to let fear and cancer make every decision for her. Today, she'll talk about the choices that she made about fertility, surgical options and maintaining an active lifestyle and why trusting yourself can be one of the most powerful tools you have. Key Takeaways: Mindset can play a powerful role during treatment Trust your instincts and advocate for yourself Maintaining normalcy can be empowering Don't let cancer make every decision for you A strong support system makes a difference Chapters: 00:00 – Amanda's Breast Cancer Story Begins 01:28 – Finding a Lump and Receiving a Misdiagnosis 04:22 – Seeking a Second Opinion and Getting Answers 07:00 – Why Self-Advocacy Matters for Young Women 10:00 – Fertility, Menopause, and Treatment Decisions 14:43 – Choosing Surgery, Staying Active, and Building Support 23:09 – Amanda's Final Advice Learn more at realpink.komen.org and komen.org Real Pink, by Susan G. Learn how it could pose a risk to your retirement plans and the smarter ways to help. This week on the Friends With Money podcast, Michelle Baltazar speaks with Aware Super's Kate Rolfe about new research showing most parents and grandparents are willing to help younger family members buy a first home, often by gifting cash, reducing their mortgages or offering low to no-interest loans, but how their good intentions could potentially put their retirement savings at risk. They discuss how giving financial support without proper planning can affect tax outcomes and Centrelink age pension eligibility, including potential consequences such as losing access to their benefits for years.Rolfe recommends getting professional financial advice before money changes hands, considering whether to gift the funds or to structure it as a loan, and weighing lump sum versus drawdown payments.01:09 How families can help02:45 Retirement and pension risks05:26 Tax advice and structuring gifts06:43 First home super saver explained08:32 Lump sum vs drawdown11:09 Where to startLinks: First home super savers schemePodcast Links:Listen on Apple PodcastsListen on SpotifyMoney WebsiteYouTube Podcast PlaylistEmail Us: podcast@moneymag.com.auGet stories like this in our newsletter: bit.ly/3GDirbRDisclaimer“To find out more from Aware Super, go to aware.com.au/member/what-we-offerGeneral advice only. Has your family consumed its lump of coal today? One of the most perverse presidential moves ever is Trump's Big Government decree to force feed “King Coal” to Americans. Proclaiming an “energy emergency,” he unilaterally ordered five electric utilities to re-open their old, coal-burning power plants. These are toxic bombs, that continuously spew mercury, carbon dioxide, and a mix of other killer pollutants into our air, water, and bodies. Mercury emissions are especially vicious, causing early death in adults and permanent IQ damages to fetuses and children. Even the president's own health secretary has excoriated mercury pollution from coal-fired utilities as “the most powerful neurotoxin we know of in the universe.”That's why We the People have rebelled against the greed of coal barons in past years, finally replacing their deadly fuel with wind power, solar, and other renewable energy sources – which also lowers consumers' electric bills. So why push to re-impose a horrific corporate poison that the people have already rejected – and that progressive utilities have moved beyond?Crass corruption. By hailing dirty coal as “beautiful,” while demonizing and defunding clean energy, Trump has been showered with millions of dollars from old-line coal profiteers. And never underestimate vanity – he even got a custom bronze trophy from the polluters, hailing him as the “Undisputed Champion of Beautiful Clean Coal.”After America began replacing coal with clean energy, mercury pollution plummeted. But by restarting coal-fired utilities last year, Trump has already increased mercury emissions by 9 percent. Since he tries to merchandize everything, though, you might be able to buy an autographed lump of coal from him.Do something!* The Sierra Club's “Beyond Coal” campaign is a great place to find all kinds of resources for taking action, making local change, and more.* Money in politics remains the thorn in our collective sides, so you can also check out End Citizens United to get involved on that front.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication. Joe Schmitz Jr. and Jeremy Keil explore the 2% Club of retirees and the unique challenges that come with significant retirement savings and a pension. https://youtu.be/G04JKpKyLJ0 Most retirement conversations focus on one question: Will I have enough? But there's another retirement challenge that doesn't get talked about nearly enough: What happens when you've done everything right? Joe Schmitz Jr. has been working with a very specific group of retirees he calls the 2% Club. His definition: People who have both: A pension And $1 million or more saved for retirement That combination creates opportunities. But it also creates a different set of retirement decisions. Success Creates Different Problems For decades, these retirees did what they were told: Saved consistently Avoided lifestyle inflation Built meaningful retirement assets Earned pensions Stayed disciplined Now retirement arrives… …and suddenly the challenge isn't accumulating wealth. It's using it wisely. Joe shared one statistic that stood out: “80% of people out there will pay no federal income taxes in retirement… while this 2% club is part of that 20% that will have to pay taxes and typically much more.” That means retirement planning shifts. Less focus on accumulation. More focus on: Taxes Spending Distribution strategy Legacy Purpose Why High-Income Retirees Can Accidentally Become Under-Spenders One of the most interesting parts of this conversation was Joe's concept of the Midwestern Millionaire. His description: Hard-working.Frugal.Disciplined. Excellent savers. Often reluctant spenders. And that creates an unexpected retirement problem. People who spent 40 years training themselves to save don't automatically become comfortable spending. Even when they can afford it. Joe described clients who had millions saved but still struggled emotionally to use their money because restraint had become part of their identity. That's where retirement planning becomes less about spreadsheets and more about permission. The Four Places Your Money Can Go Joe offered a simple framework. Your money ultimately goes somewhere. You can: Spend it Gift it Give it Pay taxes on it That framework creates an important question: If you're not spending your money intentionally… where is it going? That doesn't mean everyone should spend aggressively. But it does mean retirees should think intentionally about: Lifestyle Family impact Charitable goals Taxes Because choosing not to decide is still a decision. Pension Decisions Deserve More Attention Than Most People Give Them Joe also emphasized something I see frequently: People often make pension elections based on coworkers. Someone retires.Takes a lump sum.Everyone follows. But pension elections are often irreversible. Joe's advice was simple: Run the numbers. Questions like these matter: Lump sum or monthly pension? Survivor benefits? Age differences between spouses? Existing assets? Insurance needs? The right answer isn't universal. It's personal. Don't Let Tax Fear Control Retirement For some retirees, fear of crossing an income threshold and triggering Medicare IRMAA surcharges becomes bigger than the actual cost itself. Joe's point wasn't to ignore taxes. It was to understand them. Tax planning matters. But taxes shouldn't become the only goal. Because avoiding taxes at all costs can sometimes prevent people from living the retirement they actually built. The Real Goal One story Joe shared captured this perfectly. A retired couple promised each other they'd spend intentionally during their early retirement years. Two years later… They had spent nothing. Not because they couldn't. Because they hadn't learned how. Eventually they created a spending plan and began enjoying experiences they had delayed for decades. That's the shift retirement requires. You don't stop being disciplined. You simply redirect that discipline. The Bottom Line Retirement success isn't measured by how much money you leave untouched. It's measured by whether your money helps support the life you actually wanted. Because after decades of saving… Retirement planning becomes deciding what your wealth is for. That “lump in your throat” might be a symptom of something more chronic. In this episode of the MindBodySpace Podcast, Dr. Juna sits down with her own doctor, Dr. Jonathan Aviv—ENT physician, Columbia professor, clinical professor at Mount Sinai, and author of The Acid Watcher Diet.We talk about silent reflux, acid influx, and a stomach enzyme called pepsin that may sit in the throat, mouth, nose, and sinuses—and then get reactivated by acidic foods and drinks. This matters because reflux does not always feel like heartburn and chronic reflux can lead to problems benign and pre-cancerous.Sometimes it feels like:✔️ chronic cough✔️ hoarseness✔️ constant throat clearing✔️ post-nasal drip✔️ a lump in your throat✔️ waking up at night feeling like you can't breatheDr. Aviv also explains why some “healthy” flavored drinks, sparkling waters, sports drinks, vinegar, citrus, tomato sauce, and wine can be triggers for some people—and why the solution does not have to be a miserable, restrictive diet. This is where tracking matters.Changing your diet is not just willpower. It's pattern recognition. The RELAX TO SOAR™ planner helps you track food, sleep, stress, exercise, routines, and how your body feels—so you can start seeing what actually helps you feel better.Small changes. Real patterns. Today we're keeping it light, mostly with scenes of horrific violence, all of which evoke a paradoxical sensation, a strange weightlessness like you feel at the top of a rollercoaster. This is THE LIGHT TOUCH. Think Wade Gustafson's jacket expelling feathers in Fargo, or Moon's God-fearing monologue in True Grit. We conclude with a deep dive into the ending of Raising Arizona, which is perhaps the ultimate manifestation of a lightness that's unreliable yet unshakeable. Saga Thing returns after a much-needed holiday to pick up the story of young Glúm Eyjólfsson, better known to history as Víga-Glúm. When last we left you, Glúm's father (Eyjólf, who some called Lump) had passed away. Seeking any advantage they could get in the district, Thorkel the Tall and his son Sigmund claimed the best land at Thverá for themselves, pushing Ástrid and Glúm to the margins of the property. With no help coming from her eldest son Thorstein, Ástrid is forced to rely on her youngest, Glúm. Unfortunately for her, Glúm is a known coalbiter who prefers laying by the fire to working or pursuing justice for his family. As the situation worsens, Glúm heads to Norway hoping to gain some experience and recognition from his maternal grandfather Vigfús. Of course, things don't go exactly to plan when he arrives. How does this family reunion go for Glúm? Does grandpa Vigfús the hersir embrace his Icelandic grandson and raise his status? And who will help Ástrid deal with increasing pressure from Thorkel and Sigmund to leave Thverá? All the answers are in this episode of Saga Thing. Along the way, we talk about the place of religion in Víga-Glúm's Saga, highlighting some places to look for signs of pagan influences in the text. For example, is old Vigfús a figure of Óðin? Does this saga explore a tension between cults of Óðin and Frey? Is it all about fate? Or is this simply a story about human beings who make their own choices and have to live with the consequences. Speaking of pagan influences, we go on a brief tangent to talk about the dísablót, a special holiday and sacrifice to honor the household gods. As always, we dig into some genealogies. Please have a look at the family tree Andy's been building for Víga-Glúm's Saga on FamilyEcho. And if that's not enough, we also share some interesting stories about corpses getting dug up to face legal consequences for their actions. If you're into that kind of thing, you'll definitely want to check out the episode on Pope Stephen VI from our friends at Pontifacts. If you're interested in reading Víga-Glúm's Saga for yourself, you can find the 1866 translation by Edmund Head for free on the sagadb. We're using the John McKinnell translation, which is available in the Complete Sagas of Icelanders collection and as a stand alone text from The New Saga Library. As with most modern scholarship on this saga, much of what we have to say about this text begins with the edition by Gabriel Turville-Petre. A Christmas Collapse in Minnesota The Detroit Lions turned a dominant defensive effort into a bitter loss on Christmas. They fell to the Minnesota Vikings despite allowing only three net passing yards until the final snap. The NFL will not remember the style points. It will remember six Detroit giveaways and one back-breaking coverage bust. That was the difference in a game the Lions should have closed. The numbers sting. Minnesota finished with just 11 first downs and 161 total yards on 51 plays. Sixty-five came on Jordan Addison's game-sealing touchdown. One play erased three quarters of work. It also punished the same structural stress the Lions have failed to solve all season when opponents dress up misdirection and eye candy. This Detroit Lions Podcast breakdown is about hard truths. The Lions invited disaster with turnovers, protection issues, and a run game that never tilted the field. Minnesota crowded the box and disguised pressure. Detroit never adjusted enough. Defense Dominates Until One Bust For most of the day, the defense smothered the Vikings. The front squeezed lanes. The safeties rallied downhill. Max Brosmer accomplished little until the shot that mattered. Then the Lions lost their landmarks. The pattern reappeared. Minnesota mirrored what the Rams, Steelers, Packers, and Cowboys have shown on film. Motion and window dressing pulled the second level inside. The safeties bit. The linebackers held too long. DJ Reed crashed outside leverage with no help behind him. Earlier weeks, it was Amik Robertson or Rak Yassin on the wrong end of similar concepts. On Christmas, Addison ran free. One lapse undone a superb afternoon. Even with that bust, the defense played well enough to win. It cannot be asked to survive six offensive turnovers. Offense Unravels: Line, Plan, and Quarterback Jared Goff started sharp. He drilled a third-down throw on the move to Jameson Williams. He dropped a red-zone strike to Isaac to slaw for the lone touchdown. Then the wheels came off. Minnesota dialed pressure. Detroit's offensive line could not sort it out, and the giveaways piled up. Personnel reality bit hard. Kingsley Agwacun made only his second career start at center. Dan Skipper stepped in at left tackle with Taylor Decker out due to illness. Christian Mahogany gutted through his leg recovery but is not close to full strength. Asking this group to reach across two gaps or land difficult reach blocks was wishful. The run game vanished, and the pocket turned static. There were answers on tape. Shorter drops. Quicker triggers. Roll the launch point right and left. When Goff moved by design, throwing angles opened and timing improved. Detroit did not lean on that enough. Play calling invited the rush instead of using it against an aggressive front with screens, tempo, and rhythmic underneath throws. The equation is simple. Protect the ball. Protect the edges. Protect your defense's work. The Lions did none of it in Minnesota. One explosive allowed and six giveaways define a loss no one in Detroit will soon forget. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5AOYbHi4BY #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #minnesotavikings #sixgiveaways #coveragebust #jordanaddisongame-sealingtouchdown #misdirectionandeyecandy #motionandwindowdressing #crowdedthebox #disguisedpressure #protectionissues #kingsleyagwacun Learn more about your ad choices.
