On this episode of Out d'Coup LIVE, I welcome Chris Ullery to the show. Chris covers extremism and social justice for the USA Today network of PA and Bucks County Courier Times. We'll be talking about his new investigative piece, "Emails show how religious liberties law firm has influenced Bucks and York schools." This article is part of an on-going investigation by Chris and investigative journalist Bethany Rodgers from the USA Today Network's PA capitol bureau. Their investigations have helped expose how a deep-pocketed, religious law firm is working with right-wing school boards across Pennsylvania to change policies and sow division.  Chris Ullery has been a reporter with the Bucks County Courier Times since 2015, covering municipal government, infrastructure and the Central Bucks School District. His mostly self-taught skills in the Python computer programming language have helped him flesh out and analyze years of voter registration data, track COVID-19 cases at the start of the pandemic in 2020, and build a 10-year database of 911 call logs in Bucks County. In addition to using his programming experience to track extremist movements, he will work with local newsrooms in the USA Today Network to help tell stories by the numbers. A county in Oregon is suing some major fossil fuel companies and industry groups for their role in climate change. According to a report in DeSmog blog, the lawsuit “seeks to hold fossil fuel companies and their ‘misinformation agents' accountable for the unprecedented 2021 heat dome that saw temperatures in the county reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit.” This lawsuit is of special interest because it also implicates the global consulting firm, McKinsey & Company for their role in spreading misinformation.  And while the national media was urgently reporting on the fate of 5 people on a shoddy submarine seeking to tour the Titanic wreck, North Atlantic ocean temperatures went off the map. The unexpected heating of the Atlantic is, in the words of Bill McKibben, “truly terrifying news.”  In addition, an unprecedented “heat dome” over Mexico and Texas is producing deadly storms and heat. The jet stream maps are wild.  A meteorologist in Iowa resigned from his local TV news job due to ongoing threats from climate change deniers.  New reporting by Cyril Mychalejko in the Bucks County Beacon shows how the right-wing donor group, the Bradley Foundation, is now helping bankroll efforts to help Republicans weaponize the Department of Justice.  Moms for Liberty is holding their annual national summit in Philadelphia beginning next week. They will be met by protests as they host a range of Republican presidential hopefuls including Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and former Trump official and South Carolina Governor, Nikki Haley. And, now we've learned that pseudo-populist, anti-vaxxer and conspiracy theorist, Robert Kenndy, Jr. will be speaking there as well.  As the Mad Moms get ready to gather in Philly, yet another M4L chapter in Indiana is under fire for quoting Hitler approvingly in their newsletter.  New reporting in Vice documents the close relationship M4L has cultivated with the Proud Boys and other extremist organizations.  And let's not forget about the leader of the Monroe County, PA M4L chapter who stole a dead woman's Facebook identity to harass others. Seems to me that all the bad apples are in the same place.  Info on protests in the Bucks County Beacon.  New reporting in the Bucks County Courier-Times shows how the Harrisburg-based  right-wing religious Independence Law Firm has influenced and continues to influence Central Bucks and York schools.  The Pennridge School Board meeting was packed once again as the far-right majority continued to force through their agenda and demonstrate their incompetence. The highlight of the meeting was a Zoom presentation by Jordan Adams, the CEO of Vermilion Education. We'll get into that.  You can support this show by becoming a patron for as little as $5/month at https://www.patreon.com/rcpress. This is the second of our two-part conversation with Claire Smith, who broke down barriers for women and journalists of color during her esteemed four decades of covering Major League Baseball. We talked a lot about the pioneering aspect of her career in the first episode, including the time she was thrown out of a team clubhouse. This second episode focuses on some of Claire's favorite baseball stories and people. She takes us to Cuba with President Obama, as well as to London with the Yankees and Red Sox. Claire tells us about her special connection with the great Sandy Koufax. She recounts tales of the Niekro brothers, Joe and Phil. Claire also shares heartfelt memories of Don Baylor, the much-respected player and manager she co-authored two books with. You can listen to part one of my conversation with Smith here: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/press-box-access/claire-smith-part-1-how-you-used-those-barrels-of-ink-mattered#episodeContent Smith spent 32 years in the newspaper industry, starting in Pennsylvania at the Bucks County Courier Times. In 1979, she moved to The Philadelphia Bulletin, where she mostly covered college basketball and football. When that paper folded in 1982, she was hired by The Hartford Courant. By mid-season that year, she was put on the New York Yankees beat, making her the first woman to cover a Major League Baseball team, full-time. Claire covered the Yankees for five years before serving as the Courant's national baseball columnist for three years. She became the New York Times' first national baseball columnist in 1990 and held that role for eight years. Claire left newspapers in July 2007 to become a coordinator editor and baseball remote news editor at ESPN. Florida passed and Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a 6-week abortion ban, thanks to a legislature dominated by Republicans. Florida's current 15 week ban is held up in court, but if that ban is upheld, the 6-week ban will automatically go into effect.  A Federal appeals court refused to suspend the FDA's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone, but upheld a ban on patients being able to sent the pills by mail. That pretty much guarantees the case will be headed to the right-wing dominated US Supreme Court.  A 21-year-old Air National Guardsman was arrested for his role in leaking on Discord classified documents related to the war in Ukraine. According to the New York Times, Jack Teixeira led a group of “20 to 30 people, mostly young men and teenagers, as they bonded over guns, racist memes, video games and international politics.” Marjorie Taylor Green does the only thing she's consistent on - inject reactionary bile into the public discourse. This time she comes out in support of the National Guardsman to leaked classified documents to Discord tweeting out, “Jake Teixeira is a white, male, christian, and antiwar. That makes him an enemy to the Biden regime. And he told the truth about troops being on the ground in Ukraine and a lot more. Ask yourself who is the real enemy?” Mathias Döpfner, the CEO of Germany's largest media company and new owner of Politico, is all in on a dystopian climate future. In a series of internal emails and messages published in Die Zeit this week, “I am all in for climate change, arguing that humans have always done better in warmer periods. “We shouldn't fight climate change but adjust to it,” he said. For good measure, he also wrote in a longer message on his foreign policy views, “Free west, fuck the intolerant Muslims and all the other riff-raff.” The Fort Lauderdale, FL area received more than two feet of rain over 12 hours on Wednesday, flooding the region and shutting down major airports. The rain amounts to about a third of Fort Lauderdale's annual rainfall in one shot. The area's previous record rainfall set in 1979 was 14.59 inches. Chris Ullery and Bethany Rodgers published an explosive investigation in the Bucks County Courier Times on how the religious law firm, the Independence Law Center, is writing anti-LGBTQ policy for school boards all across Pennsylvania.  Abortion rights and health care advocates urged state lawmakers and Gov. Shapiro to stop sending public money to support the anti-abortion organization, Real Alternatives, which uses deceptive practices to push patients away from having an abortion while posing as reproductive health clinics. The Wolf Administration allocated more than $7.2 million to Real Alternatives and Gov. Shapiro is continuing the practice, with $6 million in his proposed budget.  Will Bunch makes the case for a state-takeover of Temple University. He argues, “The best way to restore Temple as a public good — once again serving Philadelphia and surrounding communities as an affordable and accessible way up the ladder — would be to make it (and, arguably, the three other state-supported schools) a fully public university.”  And award-winning author, Jean Kwok, flew in from the Netherlands to address the Central Bucks School Board about their moves to ban her book.  Amazon enters the AI race with “Bedrock.” Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, rocked.  Currently reading Rick Perlstein's, “Before the Storm: Barry Goldwater and the Unmaking of the American Consensus,” and The Bone Shard Emperor, by Andrea Stewart, which is book #2 of the her Drowning Empire trilogy. Hear how Steve Garvey helped her in that moment, and how Claire's love of baseball powered her through a career that led to her being honored at Cooperstown in 2017. Austin Murphy takes us on a whirlwind ride through his 33 years of writing for Sports Illustrated in the magazine's halcyon days. Hear how hanging out with Warren Sapp ended in a $150 cab ride. Travel with Lance Armstrong through his reign and fall as cycling's king. Go with swimsuit models to Necker Island, where a discussion with Heidi Klum turns to . . . the fall of the Berlin Wall. Austin also provides insight about how he reinvented himself after being let go by SI in 2017. He tells of taking the fight to the universe as an Amazon delivery driver before finding his way back to journalism as a newspaper reporter covering everything but sports.   Murphy wrote thousands of articles for Sports Illustrated and its website, SI.com from 1984 until 2017. About 140 of his stories were featured on the magazine's cover – once a status symbol in the world of sports. Austin covered 10 Super Bowls, eight Olympics, eight Tours de France, four Stanley Cup Finals, and a dozen college football national championship games. Oh, and he also covered the Calgary Stampede rodeo in Alberta, Canada. Some years for SI, he was on the road in the U.S. and Europe as many as 100 to 200 days a year. He interviewed Bono, Brad Pitt and five Presidents: Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump.   His journalism career began as a sports reporter for the Bucks County Courier Times in Pennsylvania and then the Chronicle in Batavia, Ill. near Chicago. Sports Illustrated hired Austin in ‘84 after he sent the magazine his humorous essay about how he disappointed his father by quitting the football team at Colgate University, where he earned a Bachler of Arts degree in English literature. Originally hired as a fact-checker, Austin quickly moved to the National Hockey League beat at SI. He eventually moved up the ranks to senior writer, primarily covering the NFL, college football and the Tour de France.   In May 2017, Murphy lost his job at Sports Illustrated in a round of corporate downsizing by the magazine's owner, Time Inc. He ended up delivering packages for Amazon – making $17 an hour – for five months in 2018 and '19. Austin wrote about that experience at Amazon for The Atlantic, and the essay went viral. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/12/what-its-like-to-deliver-packages-for-amazon/578986/ That led to his current job as a general news reporter at Santa Rosa Press Democrat in California.   Murphy is the author of three books: ·  “The Sweet Season: A Sportswriter Rediscovers Football, Family, and a Bit of Faith at Minnesota's St. John's University” ·  “How Tough Could It Be? The Trials and Errors of a Sportswriter Turned Stay-at-Home Dad” ·  Saturday Rules: A Season with the Trojans and Domers (and Gators and Buckeyes and Wolverines)   Read more about his time working for Amazon in the Colgate Magazine: https://news.colgate.edu/magazine/2020/08/07/deliverance-a-laid-off-sportswriters-roundabout-route-to-reinvention/   Follow Austin on Twitter: @ausmurph88 Learn more about your ad choices. Who had Bush v. Gore in a Teen People debate on their Y2K bingo card? Padraic Maroney is a writer and marketing professional from upstate New York. After moving to Philadelphia as a teenager, he created content for The Bucks County Courier Times' 'Reality' section, written by local teens. This led to an opportunity as a Teen People Trendspotter, as well as an internship in New York. Twenty years later, Padraic has published an unauthorized, behind-the-scenes tale of the making of the Scream franchise, and is now preparing another book on the Saw series from the early-mid 2000s. He began by telling me about Teen People magazine's unsuccessful attempt to get George W. Bush and Al Gore together, on stage, in a Teen People-sponsored debate on youth issues, during Election 2000. Could that debate have changed the course of history?? Probably not, but we'll never know, will we? Here's Padraic's story. Ben Simmons is in the building! Tom Moore of the Bucks County Courier Times reported that he has heard that Ben Simmons was seen inside Wells Fargo Center earlier today ahead of the Philadelphia 76ers matchup against the Houston Rockets. Does this mean the controversial point guard will be returning to the team for the first time this season? How will that change the team dynamic? What will Joel Embiid, who has put this team on his back this entire NBA season, say to Ben Simmons suiting up? We will also be taking a look inside the Wells Fargo Center and bring you all the updates from the game. Even after a bleak 2-5 start, the Philadelphia Eagles have reached the NFL playoffs! So what does that mean for Saturday's week 18 matchup against the NFC East Champions the Dallas Cowboys? Should the Philadelphia Eagles play everyone and hope for a better seed? Or should they rest their starters and settle for the 6th seed in the NFC bracket of the NFL Playoffs? Taking a look back on the week 16 win against the New York Giants and the week 17 win against the Washington Football Team, can the Philadelphia Eagles keep the momentum alive and finish the season at 10-7, sweeping the NFC East in the last four games of the year? Has Jalen Hurts finally proven that he can be a consistent starting quarterback in this league? Each and every week he seems to just get better and better. Jalen Hurts has shown that he has the ability to make it through the 2nd and 3rd reads in order to find an open receiver. Coach Nick Sirianni might have been on to something earlier in the season when he brought up how a flower blooms. Under the leadership of him and his coaching staff he has taken this team, turned them around and now they are gearing up to compete in a Wildcard Game. Week 17 of the NFL caps off with an AFC North clash between Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers against Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns. With this potentially being Big Ben's final game in Heinz Field, can the 6-time pro bowler and 2 time Super Bowl Champion lead the only franchise he has ever played for to another victory? It would be a perfect storm but the Pittsburgh Steelers do have a chance to make the playoffs. The absolute impossible would have to occur but do not count them out just yet. We will be dropping in all night on the Monday Night Football battle to see how this all plays out and if the Pittsburgh Steelers can keep their dreams alive, or if this really is Big Ben's last appearance in Heinz Field as their beloved starting Quarterback. Capping off the fun for tonight, Phlite Zone brings you the Weekend Winners, who they thought won the weekend. Whether it's a team, a player, or maybe a fantasy player or team. Then, Giordano discusses the emergence of Gardner Minshew after a successful outing as the Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback yesterday. After announcing the side topic centered around Minshew, Dom turns back toward more serious issues, discussing a rally on Temple's campus featuring parents protesting against the lack of safety on campus, after another student was recently murdered. Then, after debating whether chips or pretzels are the better snack food, Giordano moves into a conversation about a potential rebirth of a mandatory draft. Sam and Josh Schubert, co-owners of Maggio's, a family-run restaurant in Southampton, join the Dom Giordano Program after providing an interview to ace columnist J.D. Mullane in the Bucks County Courier Times. The Schuberts first told J.D. about a situation unfolding in their business as demand continues to grow to a level that can no longer be supplied. Maggio's, a long-time staple in the Philadelphia suburbs, used to have a 22-page menu and has had to cut it back down to about 4 pages. The Schuberts explain that the menu has had to be reduced to such a level because prices for ingredients have skyrocketed to such a level that they could no longer sustain their business. The Schuberts explain the hiring issues they've also suffered through, and explain that the only way for businesses to prosper is for workers to get back to work. On this week's show, we'll be talking about Cyril's freshly minted column, “Join the Civil Rights movement of 2021 and beyond,” published today in the Bucks County Courier Times. Cyril had the opportunity to talk to Kadida Kenner of the New Pennsylvania Project about the critical need to protect and extend voting rights in PA at a moment when echoes of Jim Crow are heard in our media, school board meetings, and legislative sessions. I also hope to get his take on the decision by the Central Bucks School Board to NOT require masks for the upcoming school year despite new guidance from the CDC. And, if we have time, we might dip into Kathy Barnette's bid for the Republican nomination for the PA Senate.
