I'm excited to invite this week's guest back on the show! Susan is an online friend of mine, and she's been on the show twice before to talk about her adventures. First, we discussed the Valley of Flowers and then the Camino Inglés. Now she's back to talk about a 40-year dream she had that she finally fulfilled. One of the things I love about Susan's adventures is that she talks and writes about lesser-known places and routes, so I get to learn about new places. I hope you find this episode inspiring! Susan is a great example of someone who dreamt of a very specific adventure, and made it happen. About Susan Jagannath Susan Jagannath successfully combined a passion for reading, a love of writing and a fascination for technology, to create a career in technical writing. With over 60 technical manuals (not) to her name, she finally decided to use her writing and publishing skills for herself and publish her own books independently. To her mild surprise, her very niche books went bestseller regularly, that's when she realised she had a system that could help others write and publish as well. As an army brat and then military wife, her life included seven different schools, three universities and a couple of emergency evacuations from conflict zones. Travel and adventure were normal parts of life. She now believes in seizing every opportunity to have a new adventure, especially post-pandemic. Whether it's camping on the beach in Australia, trekking in the Himalayas, kayaking in Queensland, whitewater rafting down the Ganges, or walking the Camino in Spain, her philosophy is to pack it into one or two weeks to create memories for a lifetime, (and disconnect from television and computer games). Susan is now on the next adventure of her life, traveling post-pandemic, helping corporate escapees write their first bestseller, and learning to be an awesome grandmother. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Christine Reed. I recently read her fantastic book, Alone in Wonderland, about her experience on the Wonderland Trail in Washington State, USA. It's a fantastic blend of a travel journal and personal memoir, including reflections on her life experiences. I highly recommend it! In this episode, we talk about lessons learned from hiking multiple trails. We discuss how trails can help us to figure things out, and how to get started on your own solo backpacking adventures. About Christine Christine Reed is a long-distance backpacker and author of the memoir, Alone in Wonderland. She shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker to rugged outdoorswoman in hopes of inspiring others to see something bigger for themselves-- whatever that may be. But also to remind us that a good story is about sharing something of ourselves and connecting with others. She's found in the outdoor community the first place that ever felt like home. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, J. F. Penn. Joanna is a friend of mine, and I've been listening to her fantastic podcast for over a decade now, The Creative Penn. Like me, Jo is a fan of solo walking, and she's recently written a book on pilgrimage. While I've done various long-distance trails in England, I've never done a pilgrimage. The Camino de Santiago has been on my list of things to do since 1996 when I first read Paulo Coelho's book about it, so it's definitely something I've been wanting to do. In this episode, we talk about what pilgrimage is and why you might want to do one. You certainly don't have to be religious—you can use a pilgrimage to explore your own inner journey or simply to visit ancient sites or sacred places. I hope this episode inspires you to start thinking about pilgrimage! About J.F. Penn J.F. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Gwendolyn Zywicke. I recently read her fantastic book, Ultrarunning Mysticism: Mind, Body, Spirit and the Sacredness of Overcoming Suffering. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Lauri McKean. I often get asked by women how to overcome fears of solo adventures. That's why I talk about it so much on this podcast and on my blog. Lauri has a great story of how she overcame her fear of solo backpacking and camping, and how facing that fear has had a positive effect on other areas of her life. I hope you find it inspiring! About Lauri Lauri is a lover of the natural world who has a fondness for hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and foraging edible and medicinal flora and fungi. She grew up in the magnificent state of Colorado (USA) where the Rocky Mountains meet the high desert and spent much of her childhood outdoors exploring these lands with her family. As an adult, she continued these outdoor adventures with friends and partners but felt uncomfortable with the idea of spending a night in the woods alone. At age 49, she decided to finally face this fear head-on and challenge herself to a one-night solo backpacking excursion. This not only resulted in a magnificent night but also the confidence and freedom to venture out for many others. Further, it was part of a transformational process that redefined her relationship with herself, her purpose, and others. Many of the things she learned during this process she now applies in her work as a Love, Dating, and Relating Coach through her business, Aligning to Love. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Helen Lear-Grant. Helen has traveled to many of the remote places I want to visit in Scotland, like the Inner and Outer Hebrides. I've had other friends visit there over the years for outdoor adventures, and it's been on my list ever since. In this episode, we talk about adventures in the Hebrides, and also Helen's adventures as a disability travel blogger. We explore how her adventures have changed her life, and what she's achieved with her adventures that she didn't think was possible. About Helen Helen is a disability travel blogger based in Scotland, exploring all of the fantastic wheelchair-accessible things that Scotland has to offer. Originally from England, she moved to Scotland 9 years ago and was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition less than a year later. She now lives in a rural village on the cusp of the highlands, with her wife and their two dogs - though they're all more likely to be found on an adventure somewhere! I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week's episode is late because I've been ill for a couple of weeks, lost my voice, and had to cancel two interviews. My voice is still a bit off, but at least I'm no longer croaking like a whispering frog. In this episode, I reflect on my experience working toward my black belt in kickboxing. I discuss what it took to pass the grading, and what I learned from the experience. I also reflect on how it's affected my outdoor adventures, and how the activities have been mutually supportive. Many months ago, a listener wrote in and asked me to talk about kickboxing. I've been waiting until now to do this episode. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Ethan Gallogly. I originally discovered him on PodcastGuests.com which, incidentally, is a great place to find guests for a podcast – or to pitch yourself to be featured on other shows. A few months ago, I read his fantastic novel, The Trail, which I really enjoyed. Ethan is super knowledgeable about the John Muir Trail, and it shows in both his book and his conversations about the trail. He's hiked the trail twice, and he shares his tips in this episode. I hope you enjoy the trip! About Ethan Gallogly Ethan Gallogly, PhD has been a leader in the Sierra Club, the Cal Hiking and Outdoors Society (CHAOS) at UC Berkeley, and the Outdoors Club of Southern California. His boots have covered countless miles, including the John Muir Trail, the High Sierra Trail, the Oregon Section of the Pacific Crest Trail, the Tahoe-Yosemite Trail, and the Theodore Solomons Trail. This is a conversation that's come up with a couple of different people recently, and I wanted to share it here. I would never have been able to run 100km if I hadn't gotten through many uncomfortable runs. I would never have completed the Coast to Coast – or any of my trails – if I hadn't pushed beyond discomfort. I wouldn't be ready for my black belt grading if I hadn't showed up for many uncomfortable sparring classes. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Marie-Pier Tremblay. We were recently introduced by Allison Boyle from episode 475. Just three years ago, Marie overcame doubt and fear to hike one of my dream trails: the Pacific Crest Trail. In this episode, we talk about what Marie learned on the trail, and how she overcame fears to make it happen. We also discuss how you can overcome fears and blocks that might be holding you back from attempting to achieve your dreams. About Marie-Pier Tremblay Marie-Pier Tremblay is a certified life coach who lives in Montreal, Canada. After thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2019, Marie started transitioning from freelance graphic designer and illustrator to full-time business owner. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week, I discuss the pagan new year or cycle and why this is such a great time to evaluate your year of adventures and plan the upcoming year. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Erica Terblanche. Erica was recently introduced to me by Eric Deeter, who was a guest on this show, on episode 368. You'll hear us saying “Thanks Eric!” in this episode, and that's who we're talking about. In this episode, we talk about how nature helps us to unlock our highest potential. We also discuss the cost of being disconnected from nature—mentally, physically, and emotionally. About Erica Terblanche Erica is a life and well-being coach, and has a popular weekly feature on Mix FM on the science of well-being and how people can build resilience in scientifically validated ways. She has a degree in psychology. a masters in positive psychology from the University of East London in the UK, and several international coaching qualifications that enable her to work with individuals and especially within teams. She has twenty years of corporate experience at Exco and Board level in financial services and holds an MBA from the University of Cape Town. She is also a well-known and accomplished endurance athlete, having won some of the world's most grueling multi-day races (she has told me the furthest she has ever run without stopping once is 208km - she knows about perseverance and grit and not just from textbooks) and she is the author of the much-acclaimed memoir RUN for the Love of Life, which also made it to the Exclusive Books Top Recommended list for non-fiction only three months after publishing the book. Erica is also the founder of Teach a Girl to Fish and Thrive Guru, both businesses helping people to unlock their highest personal potential, well-being and happiness, especially through combining psychology and nature immersion. She has a unique angle on motivational speaking, blending her corporate experience with the lessons from extreme distance running with the science of what makes life worthwhile to inspire, equip and motivate people to take that next step in their life. I'm back again, with another solo episode! Today I'll be talking about something that I've been reflecting on a lot lately. I talk a lot about personal growth and mindset – and it's true these two things are a big part of my life. I'm always looking at how I can learn and grow. The thing is, there's always room for more growth – but do you want it? Do you really need it? A few months ago, I talked about balancing growth with integration, and I do think that's important. But even more important is to pause once in a while and ask ourselves: Do I want to focus on growth right now? Do I need to focus on growth right now? What do I choose to focus on? I hope you find this episode interesting and useful! Listen To This Episode What You'll Learn There's always room for more growth – but do we need it right now? I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Corinne Kowal. I first discovered Corinne on Instagram, where I saw that she was planning to hike the Cape Wrath Trail, which has been on my bucket list for a couple of years now. I avidly followed her preparations for the trip, and couldn't wait to hear more once she returned. The Cape Wrath Trail is often considered to be one of Britain's most challenging trails, mostly due to its remoteness and rough terrain. I find it appealing because I love the idea of being out alone on the trails in such a wild part of the country. I hope you find this episode inspiring! About Corinne German, born and raised in France, I have studied in NYC where I started working, moved back to Europe where I met my husband, and we have subsequently lived 11 years abroad (Berlin, Brussels and Madrid) before moving back to France. I am the mother of 3 children: 2 boys aged 12 (almost 13) and 9 and a girl who is 5 and a half. I am a self-taught interior designer and property renovation manager. I have always been a walker if not a hiker. My parents weren't very sports-inclined but the Sunday morning walk in the nearby forest was somewhat of a ritual. We used to spend holidays as children in the German pre-alps in Bavaria (between Munich and Salzburg) where we hiked up some easy paths. I took up nordic walking while living in Berlin over 10 years ago and have been able to practice it regularly since moving back to France 4 years ago. Living pretty much in the center of the Fontainebleau forest has enabled me to walk on a regular basis to prepare for the CWT. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode is a great companion to episode 377, where I talked about How to Prioritize Your Hobbies and Adventures. In that episode, I discussed the practical side of prioritizing your hobbies and adventures. I also covered how to determine how much free time you have to devote to your hobbies, how to design your ideal week and see how your hobbies fit in, how to get clear on why your hobbies are so important to you, and how to see if your mindset is supporting you in making your hobbies a priority. In this week's episode, I'll be talking more about the concept of making your adventures non-negotiable and the mindset around this. I'm very mindful of how I spend my time, and I hope this episode helps you to use your time in the best way for you. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Jay Worthy. He's got a great concept called 28 Summers that I look forward to sharing with you. About Jay Worthy Jay Worthy is the host of the 28 Summers podcast and co-host of the Man Alive podcast (launching Summer 2022). Jay got his start in life as an instructor teaching members to use gym equipment for free, so he could get a free membership for himself – two decades later he was the first non-US CEO of the $1 billion company that made that equipment! After an adventurous childhood, his life lost its adventurous edge. Work and other commitments quickly took priority, and his passion and desire for adventure were suppressed to make way for his growing workload and other commitments. Through a series of life-changing moments and a period of intense stress and depression in his early 40's, he knew something had to change. Today he is a Vice President in a Fortune 500 corporation with a determination to show that living a life of purpose and earning a living are not mutually exclusive. He is on a mission to prove that happiness and financial security can co-exist, and that it's time for the corporate world to recognise that grinding executives into the ground and sapping every ounce of their energy is entirely counter-intuitive to optimising their impact and leadership. Jay's 28 Summers Philosophy is that living adventurously is the key to a happy life and that getting reconnected with nature is the cure for what ails us. I'm back again, with another solo episode! Last week, I was interviewing Erica Terblanche for episode 483 and we talked a bit about the importance of showing up. It was just a quick mention, and I made note of it because I knew I wanted to dive deeper into the topic on a solo episode. In fact, I made several notes of concepts that I wanted to explore on upcoming solo episodes. “Showing up” is something I've been reflecting on lately as I prepare for my black belt grading in December (fingers crossed). I've been showing up for classes more than ever before. I've been showing up consistently, and I've been focusing on getting better—and, guess what? It's working. Allison posts about backcountry hygiene, solo hiking for women, and more. As you know, I tend to over plan my life, which sometimes leads to overwhelm and frustration. I'm back again, with another solo episode! I just had a chat with Eric Deeter this afternoon for his podcast. You may remember Eric from episode 468, where we talked about the “ultramarathon mindset.” In it, he mentioned that a lot of people think that to train for a race, they just need to follow a plan and do the physical workouts. They don't realize that they could also benefit from working on their mindset. This led me to think about a topic that had been on the back of my mind for a while: sports mindset. Now, I've already done an episode on this, back in mid-2021 with Jane Talbot. But the mindset work I do with myself has been paying off lately, and I've been seeing very clear results. I've been wanting to talk about this and share with you how you can make mindset work a part of your own training plan. Listen To This Episode What You'll Learn What is a sports mindset and why is it important What is a subconscious mindset and why is it important How to get started with mindset work How to get the mindset you need to achieve your goals How to make mindset work a part of your training plan Things I Discussed The Going North Podcast with Dom Brightmon PSYCH-K® Basic Workshop 20% discount on mindset upgrade sessions Related Episodes 468 Eric Deeter ~ Use the Ultramarathon Mindset to Get Your Epic Life 439 Racquelle Pakutz ~ Rewiring Your Mindset With Hiking 396 Jane Talbot ~ How to Improve Your Sports Mindset 333 Holly Worton ~ Do You Have a Fixed Mindset or a Growth Mindset? I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Richard Hill, otherwise known as Day Tripper. I first discovered him earlier this year when I was looking for videos on the Coast to Coast. From there, I started watching his other videos about his outdoor adventures. I was particularly interested in his videos on stealth camping. This is a type of wild camping that's commonly done in more urban or semi-urban environments, where the aim is to go unnoticed. I've been wanting to try this for myself, so I thought I'd get more tips from an expert before getting started. There's some great advice about stealth camping in this episode, and I hope it inspires you to give it a try. About Richard Hill Richard has a busy stressful job managing properties on Regent Street and found he needed to find time out each week to recharge his batteries. So just over 2 years ago Day Tripper was born where he heads out for an outdoor mini adventure every week. Sometimes it's hiking part of a long-distance footpath, other times it's wild camping or stealth camping for the night in his local area or further afield. He likes to challenge himself to do new things and recently completed the 190-mile Coast to Coast hike which included camping in some very unusual camping locations in bad weather. Richard posts his adventures on U Tube to hopefully encourage others to venture out more into the great outdoors and become Day Trippers, and explore all the benefits it offers. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Brad Borkan. This is Brad's third time on the show. He was a guest on episodes 422 and 370, where we talked about Adventures in Audacious Goal Setting and How Outdoor Adventures Can Help You Make Better Decisions In Life. Now he's back, and we're talking about goal setting for our adventures and other areas of life. I find that when I achieve a goal in my adventures, it really expands my perspective of what's possible for me in other areas of life, too. And that goes both ways. I hope you find this episode interesting and useful, and I hope it inspires you to do joyful and exciting things in life. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week, I take you on a walk in the woods. This is a kind of guided journey, designed to help you connect with nature on your walks. It's a total experiment, so if you don't love it, no worries! I probably won't be trying this again in the future. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Eric Deeter. He's an ultramarathon runner and mindset coach—two things I really love talking about. In this episode, we discuss what Eric calls the “100-mile mindset” or the “ultramarathon mindset.” This mindset, which is something that can be applied to all areas of life, embodies lessons learned from running ultramarathons. We discuss how to apply ultramarathon principles to life, such as making gradual progress, pacing, and managing energy and emotions. We also talk about how to pivot and troubleshoot while still keeping the end goal in mind. I hope you find this episode interesting and useful! About Eric Deeter Eric Deeter is a mindset coach, ultramarathon runner, and ChiRunning + Walking instructor. He's also the host of The Ultramarathon Mindset Podcast. The mindset you need to run a 100-mile trail race is the same mindset that you need to break out of your limiting beliefs. Eric Deeter didn't set out to run ultramarathons. He was trying to break out of the limiting beliefs that had limited his success for decades. He'd read all the self-help books. Attended mastermind seminars. Written and recited positive affirmations. But nothing worked. His subconscious mind kept him stuck. Trail running and being in nature were a major part of his life transformation. He blends running, meditation, and being in the woods to keep his mind centered and focused. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode was inspired by a novel I recently read, called The Trail. Some of the characters were a bit judgmental about other hikers, despite the fact that they were aware of the concept “hike your own hike.” This is something I've seen a lot in books about the Camino de Santiago, and it always grates on my nerves. “Hike your own hike” is a concept that I think is super important, not just on the trail and on our adventures, but in life. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This episode is based on a request from a listener, who wrote the following: I would love to hear your thoughts about the seasons we go through, especially rest and quiet, when it doesn't feel like we are "actively growing" but maybe it's a time for letting everything settle in or preparing for the next big leap. How do you mentally, emotionally, spiritually switch gears, what strategies do you use to maximize the energy you do have during those times, how do you manage any angst for not being active? (that may be way more than one podcast episode-- :) I've had this topic on my list for a while, and now that I feel I'm in Integration Mode (also known as the Messy Middle) I thought it would be the perfect time to discuss this. Often we hear about “integration” after having a healing session, but our personal adventures may often require integration time as well. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Robert Bendetti. Last year, he hiked through the Grand Canyon from the south rim to the north rim and back to the south rim (also known as the Rim2Rim2Rim). The route he took was 50 miles in length, with 22,000 feet (6,705 meters) of elevation change. He did this solo and unsupported in just 23 hours, on a day that reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius). I'm not great with heat, so I'm not sure if I'll ever make it over to Arizona to hike the Rim2Rim2Rim. But I've seen videos of it, and the route looks absolutely gorgeous. If you want to get an idea of what it looks like, check out the links below for a video. About Robert Bendetti Husband, father, hiker, and ultra-runner (ok, more like ultra-jogger). Robert is the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE). As CFO he is responsible for all financial operations of the company as well as accounting, finance, contracts, purchasing, security, facilities, process automation, and IT. Robert has an undergraduate degree in Finance and an MBA from Kennesaw State University as well as a Masters of Accounting and Financial Management (MAFM) from DeVry. Robert is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Prosci Change Management Professional, and a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt. Robert's volunteer activities include serving as a member of the Board of Trustee for the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting (EFWA) and serving as an advisor to the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Federal Credit Union. I'm back again, with another solo episode! I've talked quite a bit about success on this podcast, mostly back in the day when I was discussing business. I've also spoken on failure, most notably back in episode 341, which is a great companion to this one. I've been reflecting on my goals for this year, and how I've adjusted them from their original versions. I've had to change my timeline for my two big goals, and I'm only just now coming to terms with that. I'm back again, with another solo episode! I've been asked to comment on this topic a couple of times in recent weeks, so I thought it would be worth exploring this issue a little more. I'm not going to talk about how to stay safe in the outdoors in terms of practical knowledge and skills. I'm going to address the biggest fear that most people talk to me about when we discuss solo walking and adventures: fear of other people, namely men. I feel like I've been skirting around this topic for years now, focusing more on how to stay safe by learning navigation skills and how to pack the 10 essentials—when really, most women I speak to are simply afraid of other human beings. In this episode, I talk about how I've overcome some of my fears (and how I'm not totally fearless, even today). I also share my number one top tip for gaining confidence in the outdoors—and elsewhere in life. Can you guess what it is? I'm back again, with another solo episode! I just returned from walking Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk, which was a huge uplevel for me. It was a longer trail than I'd ever walked before, and I was camping along the whole way, which was new for me. It meant that I'd have to carry a lot more in my pack than usual. All in all, it was a fantastic adventure! I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Katherine Leamy. I've been following her on Instagram for a few months, and I really love her approach to lightweight travel and adventure. In this episode she shares her top tips for traveling light. I've never thought of myself as a light traveler, but there have been several occasions in life where people have looked at my bag and been shocked at how little I was traveling with, so I guess I am! In this episode, Katherine shares her top tips on what type of clothes and shoes to bring, and how to care for them. She also suggests testing your clothes before you go, which sounds like common sense, but is probably something a lot of people don't think of. I certainly hadn't thought of it for urban traveling clothes. About Katherine Leamy Katherine Leamy is from New Zealand, and is a keen traveler with a passion for traveling light. At 49, Katherine bravely left her family at home, and decided she wanted to do something challenging. So, she travelled to Croatia and Italy, by herself, for 4 weeks, with a 5 kilo/ 11-pound day bag. Her mission is to show people how to pack less and stop struggling with overpacked luggage. She's also a keen solo traveler, where she loves her quiet time to explore and re-energize in the great outdoors. She shares her packing and solo travel knowledge on podcasts, media, social media and her website, The 5 Kilo Traveller. After 30 years of intense nursing, she is relishing doing something creative and just for fun. She is an advocate for women in their midlife to do what makes them happy. It doesn't have to make money or even make sense to anyone else. By our 50s, we've earned the right to say how we live our lives. Her own solo trip gave her the confidence to tackle other challenges. Katherine says, “If I can travel light and solo for a month, what else can I do?” A free packing guide pdf is available on Katherine's website once they sign up to her newsletter. I'm back again, with another solo episode! As I record this episode, I'm getting ready to go walk the Coast to Coast with two friends. For various reasons, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about life in general, and I'm starting to rethink all my plans, goals, and projects for the year—which is a huge surprise to me, especially since I thought I kept things simple for this year. Right now, I'm choosing to focus on getting ready for the trip and wrapping up work projects before I go. But when I get back, I'll be reevaluating my two big goals for this year. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This week, I'm talking about how to go back to old sports and adventures after it's been a while. You might know that I haven't done much kickboxing since Covid started—first, because classes moved online and were only sporadically held in-person due to the ins and outs of lockdown; and second, because I had a shoulder injury for all of last year. I got back into kickboxing in January of this year, and that was really challenging. I was terrified my first week back to classes! And despite the fact that we're now well into April, I'm still not back up to speed. It's taken longer than I thought it would, which means that I don't know if I'll be on track to do my next grading this year. This has got me reflecting on the mindset of returning to a sport after a long break. This isn't the first time it's happened to me—I quit running years ago, before getting back into it during the first Covid lockdown. And that was tough, too, but in a different way. I thought this might be a useful topic to discuss with you, because sometimes our fears and blocks can get in the way of returning to a beloved sport, adventure, or activity. Listen To This Episode What You'll Learn How to get clear on where you are with your sport How to check in with where you are mindset-wise Forget the past; start fresh – and don't forget the past; you're not really starting fresh Take your time getting back into things How to form a new relationship with the sport, adventure, or activity How to do the work to upgrade your mindset Things I Discussed NHS Couch to 5K app PSYCH-K® Related Episodes 443 Holly Worton ~ When Injury Keeps You From Your Adventures 429 Kelly Howard ~ Breaking Through Internal Barriers to Our Adventures 411 Holly Worton ~ Who Do You Need to Be for The Adventures You Want to Have? I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Sarah K Brandis. Sarah and I are offline friends, and we've gone on several walks in the woods together. She was also a guest on episode 380, where we discussed what to do when our passions lead to burnout. Late last year, Sarah started cycling to work in London, and I've been following her commuting adventures on Instagram. I wanted to get her back on the show to talk about how she's overcome her fears of road cycling. I know that a lot of people (myself included!) have some fears about the adventures we want to have, so I knew this would be a useful conversation. I love how Sarah has found a way of cycling to work on her own terms. This episode will give you some great ideas on how to have your own adventures in the way that works best for you: helping you to overcome your fears little by little, if needed. About Sarah Sarah K Brandis is an author, runner, and a Rehabilitation Assistant for the NHS. With a background in psychology and neuroscience, she enjoys all things outdoors that are good for the soul and our general wellbeing. Sarah mostly writes about life experiences, psychology and the brain, but occasionally about physical health too since discovering she has breast implant illness. I'm excited to reintroduce this week's guest, Jenny Mowbray. She was on the show just a few months ago in December 2021, when we talked about solo travel and adventures when you're in a committed relationship. As soon as we wrapped up that episode, I knew I wanted Jenny to come back on the show to talk about how to create a portfolio career. This episode is inspired by one of Jenny's blog posts: “Freelance, Freedom & Flexibility! Build a Mosaic Portfolio Career and ditch the 9-5 for good!!” In it, she shares her tips on how to move from one main income stream, like a job, to a career that's made up of various income streams, like freelance gigs and more. This topic is very timely for me because my business has shifted from managing big, long-term projects to smaller ones, like translating books and writing articles for other websites. It's definitely been a transition, and it's required more than a few mindset shifts for me. But I'm learning new things and, most importantly, I'm becoming a better writer as a result. About Jenny Mowbray Jenny is a passionate advocate of embarking on solo travel adventures when in a relationship. Having travelled solo when she was single, she was surprised by the curious reaction she received from family and friends when she continued to enjoy solo trips after she met her partner. Such was her fascination that she has begun to write about the topic on her blog Orchids to Olives. Jenny believes wholeheartedly that after overcoming initial barriers that the idea of solo travel sometimes presents, it holds many benefits on both a personal and relationship level and can deepen the connection with ourselves and our loved ones. If you do follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in the field of your bliss, and they open the doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be. I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Karese Laguerre. In this episode, we talk about something most of us probably don't think much about: breathing. I've got asthma, and according to some people, I'm a “weird” breather (you'll hear more about that in this episode) so it's definitely something I'm aware of. What I didn't know before this episode was how simple it can be to fix some breathing difficulties. Karese gives super simple tips on how we can identify breathing issues and improve our breathing today. About Karese Karese Laguerre is a Registered Dental Hygienist and Myofunctional Therapist. I'm back again, with another solo episode! This topic was inspired by a post I saw on Instagram at the start of the year: “NO ONE is 100% motivated to go for a run 100% of the time. Instead of relying on motivation, you have to make running a habit. Identify your ‘roadblocks', things that make it easy to say no to a run, & develop strategies to minimize them. Aim for CONSISTENCY, not perfection. Start with a REALISTIC schedule & mindset instead of an ‘all or nothing' attitude.” I've been mulling over this in the back of my mind ever since, and I wanted to discuss the topic of motivation on the show.
