The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett Key Takeaways Saving too much is just as bad as spending too much, from a psychological perspective; being too far on either end of this spectrum means that money is controlling you Money amplifies who you already are: It will not cure anxiety or depression, but if you're already happy, it will enhance your life Saving money is the equivalent of purchasing independence A reasonable savings goal: enough that if you lost your job, your car broke down, or your roof needed replacing, you could handle it without losing sleepYour feeling of wealth is what you have minus what you want – and it is so easy to ignore the latter There are two ways to get wealthier: (1) Sacrifice more or (2) Want less There is an optimal level of intelligence for being successful as an investor: The beginner and the Wall Street veteran both invest in index funds; only the midwit tries to beat the market Be smart enough to understand the basics, but not so smart that they become boring to you The biggest risk is always unknowable: The worst economic story that happens in the next ten years will be something that no one is talking about today If no one could see how you are living, how would you choose to live? Join Doug Bennett as he sits down with Financial Expert and Business Coach Monica Garcia Duggal. For 30 years she has been helping people, in particular, entrepreneurs to build wealth without burnout. Monica explains how the 80/20 rule, breath-work, meditation, a commitment to self-care and doing what she loves, including becoming an Ironman athlete, have helped her achieve big, audacious goals to create the life she loves. KEY TAKEAWAYS Monica has always used written goals to stretch herself and achieve more than anyone would think is possible. Use the 80/20 rule in all aspects of your life. Including when deciding how to spend your personal time. Focus in on the things that bring you the most joy, the things that nurture and re-energise you the most. Self-care is essential. Protect and feed your curiosity. That is where your most successful ideas come from. Curiosity also provides fuel to keep you motivated, growing and moving forward. Breath work is incredibly, incredibly powerful. Even 10 minutes a day will change your physiology and brain. For Monica, it has played a big role in helping her succeed. Companies that do not require the founder to run and remain profitable are easy to sell for a big profit. Focus on building self-managing companies. BEST MOMENTS "Goals, that's everything. You just have to figure out what you want, set the goal, and then just move forward on it. " "The 80/20 rule - 20% of whatever you do is giving you 80% of the results." "With goals, just show up. Everything will work itself out. Just show up, don´t judge. Show up and you will reach all your dreams." "Pay attention to your breathing three times per day. Even 10 breaths that's gonna start changing the neurons in your brain.." "To get the best price for your business, you've got to be superfluous to it." Chad Willardson: The Financial Expert Who Left Wall Street to Lead $1.4 Billion in AssetsPub date: 2025-08-26Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationIn this episode of HawkeTalk, I sit down with Chad Willardson, founder and CEO of Pacific Capital, to hear how he went from a young Merrill Lynch trainee during the tech bubble to building a premier boutique wealth management firm for entrepreneurs.Chad shares how growing up in Orange County shaped his values, why basketball and Michael Jordan fueled his competitive spirit, and what it really took to survive in a “shark tank” Wall Street training program where only three of 140 made it through. After nine years at Merrill Lynch and a front-row seat to the chaos of the 2008 financial crisis, Chad walked away from a seven-figure salary, lucrative offers from Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, and even a multimillion-dollar signing bonus. Instead, he chose freedom, authenticity, and the chance to start over from zero.We dive into the struggles and triumphs of launching Pacific Capital in 2011, from fighting off frivolous lawsuits to learning the nuts and bolts of leases, payroll, and leadership. Chad opens up about finding his niche serving growth-minded entrepreneurs, scaling his firm to $25M+ minimums, and why taking care of clients above all else has been the key to long-term success.Through it all, Chad's story is a reminder that persistence, integrity, and the courage to leave comfort for calling can transform both a career and a life.In this episode: (00:00) The best advice Chad ever got: take care of clients first(04:34) Surviving Merrill Lynch's “boiler room” training days(10:24) Walking away from Merrill Lynch despite seven-figure earnings(15:54) Building a boutique family office model(22:15) Expanding services like tax strategy and travel concierge(23:20) Why entrepreneurs are underserved in wealth management(24:58) Advice on persistence and always putting clients firstHawke Mediahttps://www.linkedin.com/company/hawkemedia/https://www.instagram.com/hawkemedia/?hl=en https://hawkemedia.com/https://twitter.com/hawkemediahttps://www.facebook.com/hawkemedia/ About Our Guest Chad Willardson is the founder and CEO of Pacific Capital, a boutique fiduciary wealth advisory firm in Southern California serving entrepreneurs and families with $25M+ in investable assets. Think you're making money just because the bank account isn't empty? Hate to break it to you…but that's not how business works. In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with Teresa Wagonseller, founder of HigherUp CFO Services, to rip the lid off a big misconception: small businesses don't need a CFO. Spoiler alert—they do. Teresa explains the difference between CPAs and CFOs (hint: one is stuck in the past, the other helps you build a future), breaks down what cash flow actually is (and why you probably suck at managing it), and gives real-world examples of turning hot messes into money-makers. Episode Highlights: CFOs focus on growth; CPAs focus on compliance—know the difference. You don't need to be a Fortune 500 company to afford a CFO. Fractional CFOs give small biz owners expert support without breaking the bank. Cash flow problems? Look at who owes you, who you owe, and fix your damn terms. Contractors, SaaS founders, and even doctors are all flying blind without financial leadership. Stop “hiding profits” for tax purposes if you ever want to sell your business. Liquidity > Cash. Plan like a boss, not like you're dodging Uncle Sam. Favorite Quote: “The main difference between the two is a CPA is focused on the past… the CFO is focused on the future.” Who is Teresa? Teresa Wagonseller is a CPA-turned-fractional CFO who's worked with everything from mom-and-pop shops to billion-dollar companies. Her firm, HigherUp CFO Services, helps business owners stop winging it with their money and start making strategic decisions that lead to growth, profit, and actual peace of mind. Take Action: If you've ever wondered where the hell your money is going, this episode is your wake-up call. Hit play. Then hit up a CFO.
