This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, we finally have our first lady guest on the show! While this show does have a little bit of a male slant, we've always maintained a solid third of lady listeners and I apologize for this taking so long! It's been a combination of me enjoying the company of my best researcher homies, doing solo shows, and having tricky scheduling. I wasn't even sure who the first female guest would be for a while, but I'm pleased to announce that it's working scientist, biologist, and longtime listener of the show, codenamed: Momma Bear! Having been a longtime practicing mystic, occultist, and biologist, Momma Bear is a BHA listener that's lived a full life with a great deal of insight to share! We talk about the Divine Feminine in esoteric philosophy in Jungian psychoanalysis, recommended lady philosophers and magicians, paranormal activity in children, Houdini and his colleague (perhaps even muse) Rose Mackenberg, and female pharaohs in Egyptian culture. We also take the time to discuss aspects of Mother of the Mysteries to include the Egyptian goddess Isis, and the relationship she and other figures have to Mother Mary in Christian theology. In this vein, we also discuss what the Divine Feminine and comparative religion at large mean to the modern scientific method. Science itself seems to have no soul, ethics, or morals, and many argue that this is how it should be. However, the evidence empirically suggests otherwise. Science compels us towards ethics and morality, if we use it properly -- and in today's society, we've lost the plot. One might say in many ways that modern science today is far too masculine, and would do well to have more of a nurturing touch, so Momma Bear helps me sift through all this and more! We hope you dig it. From 1925 to his death in 1926, the great escapologist and illusionist Harry Houdini conducts a tireless campaign against fake mediums. To help him, he has a small army of secret spirit investigators, led by the plucky female detective Rose Mackenberg. Working undercover in a range of disguises, Rose travels the continent on Houdini's behalf, rooting out charlatans and helping Houdini to expose them. And when Houdini and Rose go to Washington to give evidence at a Congressional hearing, they come face to face with an angry mob of spiritualists determined to silence them. Hello dear listeners, and welcome back to another episode of The ODDentity Podcast on the PodMoth Media Network, your foray into the weird, wonky, and sometimes downright spooky. This week, I offer a tale that weaves together spiritualism, Harry Houdini, and a detective named Rose Mackenberg. As you may remember from a past episode, Houdini wasn't a fan of spiritualists. He saw them as charlatans who took impressionable and grieving individuals for their money. This episode marks summer hiatus for the podcast. I'll return in September with more tales of the strange, weird, and macabre. Until then, Stay Spooky! Who ya gonna call? Rose Mackenberg! That's right. Long before Peter Venkman and his crew showed up with their proton packs to fight the supernatural, there was Rose Mackenberg, Houdini's top undercover spy in his war against crooked psychics and mediums. Rose Mackenberg was described in a 1949 Hearst syndicate article as “perhaps the only woman ‘ghost-buster' in the world.” In this episode, you'll hear about the seance-gone-bad that essentially ended the friendship between Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and escalated Houdini's crusade against Spiritualism, the tactics used by the famed magician to expose psychic con artists, and the important role Rose Mackenberg played in that battle. We guarantee you'll be fascinated by the story of this truly fearless female.
In this week's mini episode, Emma tell's Kate all about Houdini and his fight against spiritualism, from his feud with Arthur Conan Doyle to his undercover spy, Rose Mackenberg, and his attempt to ban fortune telling in the United States!
You expect sting operations with certain criminal activities like gambling, prostitution, and illegal drugs. And then there's Chris Hansen's appropriately named To Catch a Predator. It uses modern-day technology employed by some of the vilest forms of criminals ever --pedophiles and child molesters-- to catch them red-handed. But what about psychics? Would it surprise you to know that police have performed stings over the years to catch psychic cons and swindlers too? That's not to say all psychics are frauds --or are they? I'll leave that up to you to decide as we examine cases of Spiritualism, Spirit Crimes, and Psychic Stings in this episode of Haunting American True Crimes. We start with the Fox Sisters, a.k.a. the Rochester Rappers, and the birth of American spiritualism --which was a hoax in its own right. Then we examine cases of psychic swindlers who have perpetrated gypsy curse scams over the years, from the early 1900s up until the present day. And you can't have an episode about psychic frauds without including those who set out to catch them in the act, including Harry Houdini, Houdini's ghostbusting undercover agent, Rose Mackenberg, James Randi, and Bob Nygaard. Perhaps Rose Mackenberg put it best: it wasn't that she was a nonbeliever in spiritualism or unwilling to be convinced in the existence of the afterlife...she just had yet to see any proof of it. That's not to say it doesn't exist. I couldn't help but reference two psychics, Louis Rader and Jane Coates, who both predicted President Warren G. Harding's death before it happened. Not that in either case it was part of a gypsy curse or scam, but Rader was arrested for his prophecy. Perhaps wrongly so? Whether you believe in psychics or not, I hope you enjoy this jaunt into another episode of Haunting American True Crimes. We were joined by paranormal investigator Allison Jornlin on 6/21/2020 for a discussion of women paranormal researchers. A lot of interesting historically significant figures are largely unknown today because they were limited by gender constraints during their time and we were happy to bring some of them to public attention by discussing Allison's research on this topic. Some of the people discussed: Zora Neale Hurston (1891 - 1960) - author, anthropologist and filmmaker. She studied many topics including folklore and wrote a book about Voodoo in Jamaica and Haiti titled Tell My Horse: Voodoo and Life in Haiti and Jamaica (1938). Catherine Crowe - researcher who brought Poltergeist and Doppelganger into English usage. The Night Side of Nature (book) Eleanor Sidgwick - the statistician of the paranormal. Phantasms of the Living Alexandra David-Néel - the woman who gives us "the Tulpa" as we know it in pop culture Rose Mackenberg (1892 - 1968) - Houdini's Secret Weapon Mary Hyre - the journalist behind John Keel's mothman news from Point Pleasant. Plus many more are covered in the show! If you get a chance to see Allison give this talk she's an engaging speaker and one of the most upbeat people we've met. Allison on Twitter. Allison on Facebook. She's started a web series to highlight all the women in this presentation.

Most people know Harry Houdini as the world famous magician and illusionist, but in addition to his life as a performer, Houdini was also known to have a deep fascination with the afterlife. So much so he spent the later part of his career investigating spiritualists and mediums. With the help of his undercover assistant Rose Mackenberg, he was able to investigate spiritual claims and assess if they were in fact actual paranormal occurrences or mere illusions, much like the ones he preformed as a magician. In this special Halloween extra, Point of Inquiry’s producer Nora Hurley chats with Joe Nickell, the world’s leading paranormal investigator. Together, they conduct the Center for Inquiry’s Annual Houdini Séance. While summoning the dead, Nickell explains precisely how Houdini worked closely with his assistant Rose to expose fraudulent mediums and spiritualists, who were using illusions and trickery to profit off the grief of innocent people. Having poor luck contacting Houdini in previous years, Joe and Nora have decided to try something different this year by opening up the séance to Rose as well. She was a vital component of Houdini’s investigations and did much of the difficult legwork in exposing spiritual frauds. Perhaps they’ll have better luck getting in touch with the afterlife by reaching out to her along with Houdini.
