If you were camping on Mars right now, you’d see a couple of bright lights low in the west at nightfall. The brighter and higher of the two is Venus. Just as it does for those of us on Earth, it shines as Mars’s brilliant Evening Star. It’s the brightest object in the planet’s night sky other than its two tiny moons. Just below Venus you’d see the other bright object: our own planet Earth, looking like a blue-white star. Earth is quickly dropping lower in the Martian sky, and will disappear in the faint twilight within a few days. That’s because Earth is about to pass between Mars and the Sun. Over the next few Martian evenings, a fainter light will briefly move into view quite close to Earth: the Moon. Tonight, Earth and the Moon will stand so close that you’d probably need binoculars to separate them. But the two bodies are moving apart a bit as viewed from Mars, allowing them to be seen as separate objects with the eye alone – a beautiful sight in the Martian sky. From here on Earth, Mars is putting in a great appearance almost all night. It looks like a bright orange star, and it climbs into good view in the east-southeast by about 8:30 or 9 o’clock. The Moon rises below it, about 45 minutes later. They climb high across the sky during the night, and are high in the west at dawn – a beautiful sight in Earth’s night sky. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: - Atira, named for the Pawnee goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening Star orbits the Sun inside of our path. Atira, the first of this type of asteroid, was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research Program using telescopes in New Mexico. Atira is a stony object more than a mile in diameter, spins on it's axis of rotation once every three hours, has an irregular shape, and orbits the Sun once every 233 days. This asteroid was named Atira who is a goddess of the Native American Pawnee tribe. She is the wife of the creator god, Tirawa [Tire a wa]. She is the goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening star.   - Should martian microbes be sacrificed to human space exploration? It is unlikely that any living organism could survive being blasted from the surface of a planet, travel through interstellar space on a meteoroid, survive a fiery entry through another planet's atmosphere, and be viable when it reaches the surface. Atira, named for the Pawnee goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening Star orbits the Sun inside of our path.  Atira, the first of this type of asteroid, was discovered by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research Program using telescopes in New Mexico. Atira is a stony object more than a mile in diameter, spins on it's axis of rotation once every three hours, has an irregular shape, and orbits the Sun once every 233 days. This asteroid was named Atira who is a goddess of the Native American Pawnee tribe. She is the wife of the creator god, Tirawa [Tire a wa]. She is the goddess of Earth and the Morning and Evening star.

In Victorian England, the press were never shy of calling a crime the “sensation of the century” or a murder, “the most astonishing the world had ever seen.” When the body of a young woman showed up on the beach of a popular seaside resort town, no-one would have imagined it would provoke just such proclamations. As the story unravelled, and the winding, and at times, explosive court case drew on, however, it became clear that not only would it provoke such headlines, but it would also be entirely worthy of many of them. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of October 30 and November 6, 2023, and particularly for Halloween. MUSIC – ~18 sec – Lyrics: “Summer's over, winter's coming; summer's over, winter's coming.” That's part of “Winter is Coming,” by The Steel Wheels.  It sets the stage for an episode on the origins of Halloween in the ancient festival of Samhain, first observed centuries ago by Celtic peoples.  Celtic lands include Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and areas of England and France.  Samhain marked the end of the Celtic year on October 31, when summer had faded, winter was approaching, and—in Celtic belief—the dividing line between earth and the spirit world was thin, allowing spirits of the dead to roam.  As described by Miranda Aldhouse-Green in her 2015 book The Celtic Myths, quote, “It was at the festival of Samhain, at the edge of winter, that the world of humans was most at risk from the inhabitants of the world beyond: the boundaries were suspended and the spirits could prowl among the living, to their good or detriment depending on the character of the individual phantom,” unquote. Along with Halloween's date, many of its traditions can be traced back to Samhain practices, such as donning costumes or disguises, believed by the Celts to help them avoid being recognized by wandering spirits. When they weren't wandering the earth at Samhain, Celtic spirits and Celtic gods were believed to reside in what was known as the Otherworld.  In Celtic beliefs, watery areas were considered access points to the Otherworld.  Celtic mythology also gave special significance to swans, whose beautiful appearance on the water might have suggested connections to Celtic gods.  Here's a short version of an Irish legend about Samhain and swans; the opening and closing sounds are Tundra Swans, a North American species whose Berwick's Swan subspecies is found in Ireland and Wales. Oenghus was the Celtic god of love.  In the myth called “The Dream of Oenghus,” the god dreamed he saw a woman named Caer, the Celtic goddess of sleep and dreams, and he became smitten with her.  He searched far and wide for her, eventually finding her among a group of other women at a lake, and learning that every other year at Samhain the women turned into swans.  At the next Samhain, Oenghus returned to the lake and, by turning himself into a swan, was able to win Caer's heart.  The story ends with the pair of swans circling the lake three times, casting a sleep enchantment on everyone below, and flying off together.       SOUNDS  - 4 sec – Tundra Swans. Sparklehorse - "Evening Star Supercharger” from the 2023 album Bird Machine on ANTI- Today's Song of the Day is a bittersweet one: the track comes from the posthumous Sparklehorse album Bird Machine, recorded by singer/songwriter Mark Linkous in 2009, but unreleased following his death by suicide in 2010.  The release was lovingly spearheaded by Mark's brother and his sister-in-law Melissa. “It's the hardest decision I've ever made,” Matt says in a press release. “It's difficult making a choice about someone else's art, even if you've known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend. We had long conversations about not wanting to take this into a different direction. This episode should feel like an old, familiar tune. Kristin starts us off with an old timey love triangle and Brandi covers a family annihilator…?  Robert Miller was a celebrated criminal defense attorney in Washington DC. He was buddies with Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt. He'd been the law partner of vice president Charles Curtis. He even had a nickname! It was: Judge, not guilty. He was pretty content. But his much younger wife, Marguerite, was not. Soon, she and her psychiatrist, Dr. John Lind began having an affair. It didn't take Robert long to decide that he needed to get even.  Then Brandi tells us about David Hendricks, who was out of town on a business trip when his wife, Susan, and their three children, Rebekah, Grace and Benjamin were found dead in their home. David quickly emerged as the prime suspect. (Isn't it always the father?) But there wasn't much evidence tying him to the crime. The DA's office moved forward, undeterred. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases.
