Cameron-Brooks
Hoops and Heroes – The Story of Army Women’s Basketball (Ep 172)

Cameron-Brooks

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2023 49:24

We are honored to bring this episode to you. You might say it's a story of "hoops to heroes". Last year, Melissa Miles, Cameron-Brooks alumnus from 1994, approached Cameron-Brooks and shared with us a project that she and West Point teammates Melody Lutz and Dena Caradimitropoulo were working on. Melissa (Miss) and Dena were USMA class of '81, and Melody was USMA class of '84. Miss, Melody and Dena were among the first graduating classes with women at West Point (the first class with graduating women cadets was the class of 1980.). Basketball was the first varsity athletics team that women formed at West Point. Those three, along with many others, were pioneers as some of the original members of the Army Women's Basketball team. A few years ago, Miss and Dena formed a nonprofit organization with the purpose of commissioning a professional writer to tell this special story, as seen through the eyes of West Point leaders, team supporters, coaches, and Army women's basketball players. It covers from the start of the program in 1976 to the present day. It also covers players' military and professional careers and contributions. Among the book's themes are leadership, service to country, resilience through adversity, athletic accomplishment, diversity, inclusion and more. The story of women at West Point has been told from several angles but never from the viewpoint of the Army women's basketball team. It tells the story of how the team helped acclimate women to the academy, gain their acceptance and further the institution's athletic and academy ideals — literally going from hoops to heroes. In addition to Miss and Melody, Royd Lutz, USMA '84, also joined the conversation. He and Melody were classmates and have been married for nearly 40 years. He, too, is a Cameron-Brooks alumnus (1989) and brings an excellent perspective to the conversation as someone who had a front-row seat as women started attending West Point and the Army Women's Basketball team was formed. Fun fact: Royd and Melody's son, Cliff, is also a Cameron-Brooks alumnus (2017). I hope you enjoy listening to the history of Army Women's Basketball. You can grab a copy of the book, as well as learn more at www.hoopsandheroesbook.org. We plan to record additional episodes in the future highlighting more stories and experiences from the book. For now, enjoy! If you're interested in learning more about your transition options, contact us. We promised big things for this episode and Royd delivered!! In this episode, we are joined by Grail Hunters Australia member, comic and original art collector, Royd Burgoyne! For close to 15 years Royd's worked with Supanova Comic-Con & Gaming to recruit and host international comic artists during Australian events. The list of talent he's worked with is longer than Neville's.... we'll. It's very long.    Royd starts by reflecting on his first purchases back in the 80's, and how, when he got hooked on original comic art (not to mention his loving partner playing part in his first purchase! It was literally the dark ages, pre internet and Royd talks about how he found the artists, formed relationships across the pond, and how those relationships became not only the foundation of what he does at Supanova but also his personal collection. Ben and Neville get lost in the 'what-if's of original art collecting, before Royd shows off and talks through some of his favourite pieces and stories behind them (eg. John Byrne Shanna, Ashley Wood pieces etc.) and then  generously offers advice on sourcing and collecting original art, published pages and commissions. We then discuss tips about displaying and storing artwork before jumping into assessing value of art pieces both personal and market value and discuss how personalising art impacts value    To be honest, we could have gone for hours, and we'd love to have Royd back for a part two where we can field members questions! As always, sit back, crack a beer and enjoy the show.

You may not be consciously aware of it, but you're constantly making decisions. Many of these decisions are in the service of sorting out the truth of what's going on around you. Starting with deciding it's time to get up in the morning, till you decide it's time to go to bed at night, you're making hundreds, if not thousands of these types of decisions, all day. Most of your decisions are relatively mundane and you, literally, don't give them a second thought. But Peter's lunch guest on this edition of Out to Lunch, Chris Cantrall, does. He's very invested in your thought process. And your decisions, large and small. Chris is co-owner of a company called New Orleans Perspectives. There are two main parts to the company. One part conducts focus groups to test out how people interact with consumer products. The other part of the company assembles mock juries and allows lawyers to try out arguments and strategies before getting into a real courtroom. Peter's other lunch guest is also in the business of sorting out the truth. Royd Anderson is a historian and documentary film maker who specializes in making documentaries about tragic Louisiana events that are overlooked by other historians. Royd's films include a documentary about Pan Am Flight 759, one of the deadliest plane crashes in US history, that occurred in 1982 in Kenner. Royd has also made documentaries about The Upstairs Lounge Fire in 1973, the Mother's Day Bus Crash in 1999, the Luling Ferry Disaster in 2006, and others. Out to Lunch is recorded over lunch at Commander's Palace in New Orleans. See photos from this show by Jill Lafleur and more at our website. We've had a number of discussions about the Louisiana film business on Out to Lunch, check out this conversation about a watershed moment in Hollywood South when things were going south, in the negative sense. Jimmy sat down at lunch with comedian/comic book writer Frankie Boyle when he was in London for Kapow Con. Good pal/fellow podcaster Barry Nugent (Geek Syndicate) came along for the ride to join in the fun. Frankie is known for his "controversial/in your face" comedy so there is some bad language throughout. However, he's a pleasant fellow who knows his comic books well! The guys chat about Frankie's comic in Clint Magazine called Rex Royd, growing up reading comic books, his last comedy tour, his books and overall career. Really great discussion! Jimmy ends with a couple of profile questionairres to sum it all up. This episode is also a crossover with Stated Magazine and will appear on that website some time in the near future. Thanks to Frankie for his time and for lunch! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!
