Rethinking Retirement: Why the Numbers Don't Add Up

The Prosperity Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 2, 2026 17:34

Executive Summary This episode opens a multi-part series on one of the most emotionally loaded words in personal finance: retirement. Kim Butler and Spencer Shaw start at the foundation, examining what the word actually means, why Kim resists it, and what the math really says about the most common retirement savings targets. Kim establishes the core problem: expenses triple over 30 years, not because prices rise arbitrarily, but because the dollar is worth less. Inflation at 3% compounding over three decades transforms today's lifestyle into a figure three times larger. Add longevity into the equation and the challenge grows steeper. Life insurance companies are already pricing policies to age 121, and Kim projects that listeners in their 30s and 40s may reach 120, 130, even 140. The episode also covers the efficient debt framework, where Kim explains why a mortgage at 8% or below is a good loan and why cash outside the home is almost always more valuable than home equity. The episode tackles the 4% rule directly. Once accepted as a reliable withdrawal guideline, it has been quietly revised downward to 3.5%, 3%, and in some conversations 2.5%, while pundits on the other end are telling people they can safely take 5.5%. Todd Langford's analysis of a $2 million portfolio showed it running out in as few as 14 to 15 years, leaving a 65-year-old potentially without income at 80. Kim and Spencer also address the emotional and psychological dimensions of stopping work entirely, making the case that retirement is not just a financial risk. For many people, it may be a health risk too. Links & Resources Mentioned For resources and additional information of this episode go toEmpower Your Finances With Our Prosperity Podcast Empowering Parents, Nurturing Futures - Prosperity Parents Kim D. H. Butler Keywords retirement planning, 4% rule, retirement savings, financial freedom, longevity risk, inflation and retirement, dollar worth less, whole life insurance, prosperity economics, prosperity thinkers, retirement math, efficient debt, home equity vs cash, time value of money, retirement withdrawal rate, financial education, 4% withdrawal rule problems, cash flow in retirement, how much to retire, living longer retirement planning Episode Highlights [00:00:00 - 00:01:50] Kim defines retirement as "taken out of service" and explains why the word conflicts with human purpose. [00:01:50 - 00:02:55] Spencer frames what people are actually doing: moving to Mexico, selling the house, working until 90. [00:03:18 - 00:05:13] Kim details why expenses triple: inflation at 3%, compounding lifestyle costs, and the example of her father in his mid-80s. [00:05:13 - 00:06:17] Spencer pushes back: is it rising expenses, or a dollar worth less? Kim confirms it is the dollar. [00:06:17 - 00:07:17] Kim explains efficient debt: why a mortgage at 8% or below is a good loan and why home equity is not the same as cash. [00:07:17 - 00:09:17] Kim walks through a real client scenario: $400K liquid vs. paying off the mortgage, and why cash wins. [00:09:17 - 00:11:25] Spencer presents three retirement target tiers: $800K, $1.46M, $2.67M and asks Kim to weigh in. [00:10:20 - 00:12:00] Kim addresses the Dave Ramsey $2.5M endorsement and Todd Langford's math showing it running out in 14-15 years. [00:11:25 - 00:14:59] Kim explains the 4% withdrawal rule, its quiet downward revisions, and why linear math fails in a time-based system. [00:15:00 - 00:17:07] Kim and Spencer address the human cost: purpose, physical health, and the psychological and physiological identity tied to work.

Most people think stress comes from big problems. Taoism suggests something different. In this free Living the Tao Short (2-23), Master Mikel Steenrod explores how sudden changes—whether they seem good or bad—place demands on the body and mind. Using weather as a starting point, he explains why rapid shifts can drain our reserves, disrupt our balance, and gradually affect both quality of life and longevity. A beautiful warm day in the middle of winter may feel wonderful, but your body still has to adapt. The same principle applies to life itself. Stressors often arrive in clusters, and while any one challenge might be manageable, repeated shocks can accumulate over time. Discover why Taoists pay attention to mismatches, adaptation, recovery, and the hidden costs of rapid change—and what you can do to restore yourself when life moves too fast. Did West do what he did to Ciara because he secretly hates her after fan reactions to their breakup? Back to In the City, Bravo and Cocktails was featured twice on the show. Once at the beginning regarding Amanda and Kyle's breakup and then again showing our post about Danielle dating a married man. But Cocktailers knew first, of course, all the way back in August of last year. The Valley is heating up again. Darkside Danny makes an appearance...but is it really just when he drinks that he acts like this? We are starting to question that. And why Lala and Janet's situations are NOT the same.    This week's episode of Cocktails and Gossip is brought to you by our sponsor, Hulu. Whatever it is you're into, Hulu has it all. No filler. Andrew Lownie told The Daily Mail that Fergy dated Diddy for years, meeting at a Ghislaine Maxwell party. Many have pointed to the similarity between Jeffrey Epstein and P. Diddy (Sean Combs) as both used their influence to get other influential people in precarious situations including filming them in private encounters. It has been claimed that Diddy was (like Epstein) a blackmail agent. Now, with this latest revelation, it appears Sarah Ferguson may have dated both Diddy and Epstein who she once claimed she wanted to "marry" in leaked emails. Both men also faced the same prosecutor (Maurene Comey), the daughter of former FBI director James Comey. Diddy who is serving his 50 month prison sentence (12 months removed for time served) was not convicted of trafficking, however, all evidence points to this being a mis-judgement considering the lengthy evidence against him. Why is Fergy connected to three men accused of many of the same horrific crimes? Why did Diddy allegedly pick up his girls at Ghislaine Maxwell events? How do all of these people know each other so well if there isn't some sort of combined conspiracy? After the mysterious death of Virginia Guiffre, it is our responsibility to ask these questions and connect the dots. No one is being properly prosecuted for their crimes in the Epstein files which are blatant and involve sickening attacks on young people. When asked why we aren't talking about Epstein anymore, President Trump calls those who are interested in this case "weaklings." Justice must prevail for thousands of young girls. Meanwhile, everyone is talking about the latest "UFO Disclosure" instead which reads like a dump of useless files like the initial Epstein documents. Who else is involved in this potential blackmail ring? How deep does it go? How many powerful people are still cooperating with these obvious government agents? Stay tuned for more from WAM! Last night, what should have been one of the most secure and controlled events in the country turned into chaos as shots were fired at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Now the internet is flooded with clips, screenshots, alleged manifestos, and conflicting reports about the shooter, and much of it isn't adding up. Is there really a pattern behind the so-called “missing scientists”—or is the story spiraling into speculation? In this episode, we break down the viral claims surrounding disappearances tied to high-level research communities, including connections to Los Alamos National Laboratory. While some cases raise legitimate questions, others may be getting lumped in without evidence. We examine specific cases like William Neil McCasland and other individuals whose disappearances have drawn attention, separating what's unusual from what may simply be misunderstood. We also explore how online communities—especially those focused on UFO narratives—have amplified the story, and why critical thinking matters when evaluating claims like these. Is this a real pattern worth investigating—or a case of the internet connecting dots that don't belong together?

Then tomorrow morning, we are expecting to hear Olly Robbins's side of the story when he appears in front of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. Whose testimony will be the most compelling? Will it be the case – as we expect – that Mandelson's was a political appointment which the Foreign Office was under orders to push through, despite what skeletons might be in his closet?Tim Shipman speaks to James Heale.Produced by Megan McElroy and Oscar Edmondson.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Lawmakers across the state expressed shock, urging families facing domestic conflict to seek help, as details emerged about prior marital strain and calls for police intervention, reigniting national conversations around domestic violence and mental health. The cast also reacts to growing scrutiny around rapper Future, as court records and legal filings reveal a sharp contrast between his reported nine‑figure net worth and relatively low monthly child‑support payments—made possible, experts say, by strategic asset structuring and filing in states with capped child‑support guidelines. The Hot Spot turns to gospel star Tina Campbell, whose decades‑long marriage reportedly could not survive long‑standing tensions intensified by her public support of Donald Trump—a stance that insiders say created deep divides at home and within the faith community. And in one of the show’s most debated moments, Akon goes viral after openly defending his polygamous lifestyle, arguing that men and women are not “biologically equal” in relationships—a claim that sparked immediate backlash and a heated discussion on responsibility, culture, and modern relationships.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Casey explains why his family has long questioned the official story, pointing to evidence that, in his view, complicates what many people think they know about the case. The Kelsey Fitzsimmons case turns on a single evidentiary question: where was the muzzle of that gun pointed? At herself or at the officer in her doorway? Every other fact in this case — the postpartum depression diagnosis, the restraining order, the 53-day hospitalization, the alleged removal of exculpatory evidence — feeds into how a judge answers that question. Because she waived her jury. That decision alone deserves scrutiny. Here's what the record shows. Fitzsimmons was on documented medical leave for postpartum depression when her ex filed a sworn affidavit alleging she was a danger to herself and their child. That filing triggered a restraining order and a custody removal. Her own colleagues executed it at her door on June 30, 2025. She was shot. Fifty-three days in the hospital. Collapsed lung.During that hospitalization, her ex allegedly entered her home, took her laptop, accessed her personal accounts, and removed a letter he had written describing her as an amazing mother — a document with obvious evidentiary value to her defense. The DA reviewed it and declined to prosecute. He faces no charges. She faces felony assault. That asymmetry is not incidental to this case. It is the case.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer examines the evidentiary picture here — the weight of competing sworn accounts at a shooting scene, what a DA's pass on the break-in actually signals, and whether a bench trial gives Kelsey Fitzsimmons any real advantage or eliminates the one safety net that might have understood what she was going through.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
