The gang postpones the Mock Draft and Mock Trial episode.
This week I want to share a project idea that you can use for a ton of different texts - the mock trial. I'll tell you why the mock trial was one of my FAVORITE projects as a student, and one fun way I used it as a teacher. By the time you finish listening to this quick episode, I hope you'll be excited to put a mock trial into play in your own classroom. My senior year of high school, my AP Lit teacher thought of a wonderful way to spice up our Madame Bovary unit. She had us re-enact Gustave Flaubert's obscenity trial. Did you know he stood trial for offending public morals with his novel? Yep. Anyway, we all took on different roles - Flaubert himself, and the lawyers and witnesses - and started meeting in class to plan our arguments, our questions, and our opening and closing statements. As Flaubert's defense lawyer, I thought it would be helpful to have the transcripts of the original trial, so after school I headed for the local University Library to check out the transcript, which I used to create my seven page single spaced opening statement for Flaubert. It was so much fun pulling those transcripts out in class the next day. Needless to say, Flaubert was declared innocent by the trial's end, and the project has always stuck with me as one of my favorites from school. Years later, I decided to put my own spin on it with my 10th graders in Bulgaria as we studied The Crucible. We put the judges, Hawthorne and Danforth, on trial for letting it all happen. Students took the roles of defense and prosecution lawyers, characters in the play who could be called to the stand, and jury members. Everyone had specific tasks to help them prepare, and each witness worked on either the defense or prosecution's team in building a case. The lawyers wrote opening statements and worked to come up with strong questions for each witness. Witnesses worked with their lawyers on their answers to the questions they would know, possible questions the other team might ask, and how they would respond, and reviewed their characters' actions and dialogue in the play. Jury members came up with argument ideas for both sides, as well as evidence to support them, so they'd have a clear picture of the text going into the trial. I was the judge, so I could run the order of the day and keep things moving on schedule. While I felt the judges were to blame for allowing the court to abandon real justice, I believe in the end the jury found Hawthorne and Danforth innocent, after a highly engaging day of official process. I bet there's a mock trial spin waiting to happen for at least one of your class texts… In Romeo and Juliet, you might put the priest on trial for Romeo and Juliet's deaths. In The Great Gatsby, you might put Daisy on trial for Myrtle's death. But it doesn't always have to be about an actual crime. You might let Frankenstein's monster sue him for not creating a mate for him, and decide whether or not to award damages. You could try the insurance case of Willy Loman from Death of a Salesman. While a mock trial isn't right for every book, it's a great way to create engagement and buy-in around building skills with argument, evidence, and analysis while also practicing public speaking. It doesn't hurt that law if a popular career many students may be considering. That's why this week, I want to highly recommend you give a mock trial project a try the next time you've got a project-shaped hole in a whole class novel unit. Emily and Ky are back with their hot baked takes on episode two of Chimp Crazy! Not that you'd know that until practically the outro, if you weren't around last week! But if not, where were you?? Hopefully you're watching the show first, because they've got spoilers galore. Also important (probably questionable) legal info, and questions about how one copes without a face. Speaking of which, episode two of Chimp Crazy features disturbing footage and 911 call recordings of what is likely the most horrifying, traumatic chimp attack of all time, and that's saying something. Consider if it's a show you want to watch, or something you want to hear two really stoned people discuss. They also touch on Emily's time in Mock Trial in High School, and which bones are the most upsetting. Due to technical difficulties, this one took more editing than usual, which is why we're a day late, and Emily wants you to know she DID take a lot of Ky's coughs out. We are all just trying to survive here, lets be honest.

The Supreme Court will soon decide on a case surrounding a medication used for abortion, mifepristone, and whether the drug should continue to be available based on claims of safety and ethical considerations. Those in favor of restrictions argue that the FDA fast-tracked its approval without considering health impacts. Those against restriction argue the FDA made its decisions based on safety and efficiency, and it's being targeted to further infringe on women's rights. Now we debate: Should the Courts Restrict Access to the Abortion Pill? Surveys in recent years often have found more than 25 percent of Hoosier respondents did not know the name of the governor, according to a Ball State University professor quoted in a recent Indianapolis Star article. Does that sound alarming? Well, efforts are underway to increase civic understanding both by the general public and by students at Indiana schools. In a joint project, the Indiana Bar Foundation and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce are publishing an updated book, Here is Your Indiana Government, to enhance understanding; it can be downloaded for free by the general public at https://www.inbarfoundation.org/indianagovernmentbook/ and is being made available to Indiana schools (and their libraries) ranging from elementary schools to high schools. During our show, Nelson's guests will share about ways that people can get involved in public affairs; projects to enhance civic understanding, and Bar Foundation-supported programs such as We the People and Mock Trial. We also will share various intriguing "Indiana facts" featured in the updated civics book. They include some that are obscure or quirky such as: In what Indiana city is it illegal to throw a snowball in city limits? Tune in for the answer. Who is the only elected county official with the authority to arrest a sheriff? Hint: It's probably not the office holder you would have assumed. And tomato juice was invented at what famous site in Indiana?

EPISODE 109| What's in a Name? The Shakespeare Authorship Debate Guest: Scott Jackson, Mary Irene Ryan Executive Artistic Director of Shakespeare at the University of Notre Dame, current vice president of the Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA) and incoming president, actor, director and Shakespeare scholar William Shakespeare wrote at least 36 plays, 154 sonnets, two narrative poems and a few shorter poems - more than 884,000 words total, more than 1700 of which he invented. But just who was this guy? Was he really "the Man from Stratford", or merely a pen name for... well someone else? We look at some of the more popular Anti-Stratfordian theories and also look at why some people seem hell bent on proving that someone else, anyone else, actually wrote all that stuff. Show Notes: Resources: Operation Homefront https://operationhomefront.org/ Military Child of the Year Award Recipients https://operationhomefront.org/2024-military-child-of-the-year-award-recipients/ Bio: Charlotte is Operation Homefront's 2024 Military Child of the Year for the Coast Guard. Charlotte, 18, is a high school senior in Washington, D.C., where she resides with her parents, Sarah and U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Jason Tama, and her 16-year-old sister. Charlotte views military life as a series of adventures, having participated in unique experiences such as marching with Coasties in the New York City Veterans Day parade and viewing Fourth of July fireworks from the deck of a Coast Guard ship in New York Harbor. During her father's career, Charlotte has experienced six permanent change of station moves, which have taught her the importance of diving into new situations with confidence. Charlotte believes that engaging in school, sports, extracurricular activities, community service, and faith-based groups is crucial for making connections and feeling at home in new places. “Getting involved…will help you form connections in your new community and make a new place feel more like home,” she said. Isabella is Operation Homefront's 2024 Military Child of the Year® for the Marine Corps. The 17-year-old senior resides in Temecula, California, volunteers with a local peer court program that offers juveniles a hands-on understanding of the judicial system, including roles from juror to attorney. She also cultivates her knowledge of the law through her school's Mock Trial team and an internship at a local law firm. Isabella is the daughter of Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Arrieta, an aircraft mechanic instructor with the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit North Island, and Denise Arrieta, who works as an alternative education clerk. Isabella has a 12-year-old sister. One of her most cherished memories is of pinning her father's uniform during his last promotion ceremony, a moment that underscored the pride she feels for her family's military service and the sacrifices that come with it. “I was so proud to be his daughter,” Isabella recalled. She equally admires her mother for her role in supporting the family through financial challenges and periods of separation due to her father's deployments. Isabella credits her mother's strength and resilience for forming the foundation of her own character and achievements. Lindsay is Operation Homefront's 2024 Military Child of the Year® for the Navy. Lindsay, 18, is the daughter of Navy veterans Shaun and Keri Carstairs. Shaun retired as a captain after a distinguished career of 25 years, and Keri served for 13 years, achieving the rank of commander before her honorable discharge in 2011. Both parents have medical backgrounds, with Shaun working as an emergency physician, and Keri as a pediatric emergency physician and healthcare executive. Lindsay has an older brother, Ian. Despite her parents' medical expertise, the diagnosis of Jeavons Syndrome when Lindsay was 8 years old presented significant challenges. The disease was difficult to control. Epilepsy was not just a physical hardship for Lindsay but also a mental and emotional challenge. She worried about what her classmates would think of her each time an ambulance came to the school because of her seizures. Lindsay's early adversities inspired her to co-found a local International Children's Advisory Network (iCAN) chapter at Rady Children's Hospital, where she was a patient. “I am proud to have started (a chapter) for my community,” Lindsay said. “I dedicated many hours to establishing our chapter. I learned to stay organized and improved my public speaking skills while talking to peers about iCAN and at advocacy events.” Full biographies can be found at https://operationhomefront.org/2024-military-child-of-the-year-award-recipients/.
