As an original comic art collector, I'm excited because we are going to dive today into a different corner of the comics collectable market today. There's been a bit of an upheaval in recent weeks with the exodus of artists from Cadence Comic Art. As many arts look for new representation or in some cases for collaborative opportunities to share the burdens of operating a direct-to-consumer model over the internet, the tried-and-true convention continues to provide a unique pathway not only for purchasing artwork but for interacting with the artists as well. Enter my guests today. Arnaud Lapeyre and Steve Morger are the co-founders of the Lake Como Comic Art Festival, a unique, curated event designed to streamline the traditional convention experience and focus solely on the comic artists and their artwork. This is a one of a kind comic art festival in I guarantee what has to be the most idyllic of locations for something like this. Fandom never got treated so good. We're back! Thank you all for your patience during our break. But I believe with my latest guest, Ken Viola, that the wait was worth it. What drives this podcast more than anything are the collector stories. Having been a collector since the 1950s, it's safe to say that Ken has witnessed and experienced more than most in this hobby. Not many can say they were friends with Steve Ditko, or got to hang Frank Frazetta's Egyptian Queen painting in their parents' home, or can lay claim to being the OG Alan Moore art collector. Or produce a documentary featuring Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Moebius, Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, and other comics legends. And that's just scratching the surface. We're going to bring Ken back down the road for part two...for now, enjoy your intro to Ken Viola!
Connection is everything ! Join us in The Sober Club whether you are sober curious, or have been sober for years, its all about focusing on the life you don't want to escape from. www.thesoberclub.com Janey chats to comic author Rachael Smith on making sense of life through comic art on the release of her highly acclaimed new book Glass half empty Grief, mental health problems, and a troubled childhood leading to her to self-medicating with alcohol. The pandemic made all her problems worse: she was isolated and depressed. Stuck scrolling the internet for horrible news, both global and personal. People were either terrified or bored, or a heady mixture of both. It was a weird time. Alcohol turned from a way of making everything a party into making everything bearable. A worrying turning point. She got better through therapy, and journaling through comics. Comics are how she make sense of the world. Making comics about her life helps her work out how she is feeling about things, and she realised she was feeling pretty awful about her relationship with alcohol. She's feeling a lot happier now.! John Jennings—Hugo Award winner, New York Times bestselling author, curator, scholar, and Artist—is keenly aware that in adapting novels for the graphic format, his decisions turn what has only been imagined into facts drawn on the page. In this conversation with critic, translator, and teacher of a creative course on the art of making comics, Jean-Christophe Cloutier, Jennings explores how he makes those decisions that range from the design of endpapers to selecting a character's skin tone with the ultimate aim of championing Black culture and Black comics. Given that Jennings has just entered the Marvel Universe with the debut of Silver Surfer: Ghost Light, the timing is right to reflect on the pressures and pleasures of adapting beloved stories for a contemporary audience. Jennings is both teacher and student of comics' powerful lessons, and lucky for listeners, his course comes with an illustrated syllabus, aka illabus. In the podcast's first ever episode about graphic novels, Jennings and Cloutier talk comic book history, the power of collaboration, and the importance of long showers.
