The Big Nansen Ski JumpRegion: Berlin, The Great North WoodsThe Nansen Ski Club was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest ski clubs in the United States. The club is named after Fridtjof Nansen, a Norwegian explorer, scientist, and humanitarian. Between 1936-1938, the Big Nansen was the world's tallest ski jump and was the site of the first ever ski jumping Olympic trials in 1938 and the FIS World Championships in 1939 which attracted more than 25,000 spectators who traveled to the Great North Woods navigating small windy backroads and snow trains. More than 87 radio stations broadcasted the event live. The jump eventually hosted four U.S. National Ski Jumping Championships, a North American Championship, Eastern Championships, and numerous international competitions before holding its last event in March of 1985.In 2017, former World Champion ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson, who has family in Plymouth, NH, decided to join the effort to revive the Big Nansen. She convinced her sponsor, Red Bull Energy Drink, to re-deck the jump for one “Last Leap.” On the morning of March 4th, 2017, Hendrickson launched off of the Big Nansen, symbolizing the beginning of a new era for the jump. Even now, with restorative efforts, enthusiasts say the jump is one of the scariest they've ever experienced—it sways with the wind!Read more about Hendrickson's jumpIn this episode of the 603podcast, Dan Egan sits down with guest Scott Halvorson to discuss the history and culture of the Big Nansen Ski Jump. Scott Halvorson is a member and the treasurer of the Friends of the Nansen Ski Jump Committee. He is also the grandson of Alf Halvorson, who oversaw construction of the jump back in 1937-38. Tune in for more on the Big Nansen and ski jumping in New Hampshire. Mad River Coffee is located at Exit 28 off Highway 93 in Campton, NH. In this episode we speak with Sarah Hendrickson, Olympian and World Champion in the sport of ski jumping about the benefits of plant-based dieting and the unique pressures for female athletes. Sarah attended the first ever Olympic Games in Sochi Russia in 2014, and with bib number one, became the first ever female to ski jump in an Olympic event. Prior to that event, she won the first ever world cup event and world cup overall title in the sport. Although she does not like to be defined by her injuries, a crash in 2013, training for the Olympics, severely injured her right knee. But with an intense rehab program, recovered in a short five months to qualify for the Olympic team. Sarah knows her challenges with injuries has taught her a lot about mental toughness, mental health, rehabilitation and perseverance to return to her passion. Although she has retired from the sport, she remains highly involved on the international level through the International Ski Federation as a four year athlete representative for women's ski jumping. The inequality that this sport specifically faces fuels her dedication to push for more acceptance, increase prize money and increase the amount of events to someday match the men. Learning points: Can a plant-based diet support the nutritional needs of an Olympic athlete? Are there unique pressures for female athletes? How did Sarah's injury impact her mental health? It's been a tough week in America--and in cities around the world that are rising up against racism and social injustice. In hundreds of cities, people are banding together to make a statement about the brutal killing of George Floyd and to demand change. Because of the situation going on in the world, we wanted to take some time and look at protests that have occurred on the Olympic stage throughout its existence, even though Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter states, "No kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas." The IOC even clarified this earlier this year to prevent displays at Tokyo 2020. And while the IOC believes that sport and politics don't mix, we also note how that belief conveniently goes by the wayside when the IOC wants to promote a political agenda. The dulcet tones of Jason Bryant mercifully tell us how to pronounce TKFLASTAN, our land of former guests. In part of this week's update, we learn that ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson was on an episode of "Behind the Gold." Check it out here! We'd love to hear from you - email us at flamealivepod@gmail.com or call us at 208-FLAME-IT. Thank you so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive!

Jill and Alison are back from a weekend in Boston at the Olympin Collectors' Show! They scored some deals on pins and memorabilia (keep an eye on our Insta and Twitter feeds for pics) and saw some of our favorite Olympic fans from episode 5. It was a great time -- and we got a great interview with a Games Maker that we'll be featuring in a few weeks. The International Weightlifting Federation's world championships starts on Wednesday, September 18, so we thought it was a great time to learn about Olympic weightlifting and what this sport is all about. Joining us to explain it is the Voice of the People, Seb Ostrowicz, host of the Weightlifting House podcast and writer at its accompanying website. Seb talks with us about the two lifts that make up a weightlifting competition: the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. We also talk about: Weight classes, cutting weight and post-weigh-in eating The incredible flexibility and mobility of weightlifters Who to look out for at Tokyo 2020 Check out Weightlifting House! They're on Facebook, Insta and Twitter, and you can find the podcast on your favorite podcast player. If you love weightlifting, definitely check it out because they get some great interviews with top people in the sport. In our Team Olympic Fever Update, we've got news from our team members Sarah Hendrickson and the dulcet tones of Jason Bryant. We've also got news from Tokyo 2020 -- someone's not too happy about changes made to the Team Equestrian events! Also, if you've applied to be part of the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay, don't hold your breath....there's a ton of applicants. Next week, we'll have more weightlifting fun, but this time from the other side of the stage. Weightlifting House's Dan Kent will tell us what it's like to referee a weightlifting competition (you know how Jill loves officiating chat, so this is going to be a good one!). Jill and Alison fly high this week as they talk about ski jumping -- and the fact that women were just allowed the opportunity to compete in this event at the Olympics in 2014. 2014! Why? Ski jumping was deemed medically unsafe to women's reproductive organs (we are not making this up). Alison also talks with U.S. Olympic ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson about the sport and being the first woman to jump in Olympic competition. No discussion of Olympic ski jumping would be complete without talking about Eddie "the Eagle" Edwards, Great Britain's famed ski jumper from Calgary 1988. We talk about his impact on the sport--and on the world of music. Plus, Tokyo 2020 has released its three mascot finalists. We analyze them and try to figure out what they even are, exactly.
