Paris hosts the Olympic Games this summer, but it's in a city founded by the ancient Greeks that it all begins. The Olympic flame has arrived in the Mediterranean port of Marseille, the start of a long journey to the July 26 opening ceremony. What's it all about? After all, the torch relay hasn't always been part of the pageantry. Organisers insist it's not political, but also boast of the values they purvey.  What are those values? Does it resonate, for instance, when the leader of the last host nation China and the next host nation France call for an Olympic truce during the Games? What does a global spectacle like this one mean post-pandemic and in the midst of so many conflicts and fractures across the planet? To what extent will Paris 2024 mirror the triumphs and challenges of our present day?Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Juliette Brown.

In her 2015 book, Gloria Steinem described the National Women's Conference of 1977 as “the most important event nobody knows about.” The four-day event in Houston, Texas, which brought together 2,000 delegates and another 15,000-20,000 observers was the culmination of a commission appointed first by President Ford and then by President Carter, and was and funded by Congress for $5 million to investigate how federal legislation could best help women. The excited delegates believed that the conference would change history, so what happened, and why do so few people now even remember that it happened. Joining me to help us learn more about the National Women's Conference are Dr. Nancy Beck Young, the Moores Professor of History; and Dr. Elizabeth Rodwell, Assistant Professor of Digital Media, who are both on the leadership team for The Sharing Stories from 1977 project through the Center for Public History at the University of Houston. Ep.K095: Tokyo Olympics to kick off torch relay again tomorrow   The torch relay of the Tokyo Olympics is set to begin tomorrow from Japan's Fukushima Prefecture, which was devastated by the nuclear disaster in 2011. The Olympic flame will travel across Japan for months. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, fans along the roadsides watching the relay need to social distance, wear masks and cheer quietly. Earlier last month, some athletes and celebrities withdrew from the torch relay due to then Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee president Yoshiro Mori's discriminatory remarks against women. The organizer announced recently that Japanese centenarian Kane Tanaka will join the relay in May to cheer the nation. Born in 1903, the 118-year-old granny is the world's oldest verified living person today. The Tokyo Olympics featuring 11,000 athletes is scheduled to open on July 23. The committee announced last weekend that international fans would not be allowed to attend the games this time. Due to fear of large crowds spreading the coronavirus, 77 percent of the Japanese are opposed to the opening to foreign spectators. Most people have an emergency kit at home in case of emergencies, so what should people with pets do when a natural disaster occurs? In Japan, a pet shop launched a survival bag for dogs that can be tied to the dog's body if any emergency happens. The survival gear inside can not only save the dog but also save the owner's life. According to SoraNews24, many cases of dogs fail to escape from the tragedy in an accident or natural disaster. Bobsledder Josh Williamson, winner of the first season of Team USA's "The Next Olympic Hopeful" was our first interviewee, and now he returns, on the cusp of fulfilling his "Next Olympic Hopeful" goals and making it to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. We catch up with Josh and learn how he's approaching this season, what it's like to become a veteran in the sport, and what the bobsled track at Beijing is like (POV video here). Follow Josh on Twitter and Insta In our history moment on Atlanta 1996, Alison dives into maybe the most controversial phrase that came out of Juan Antonio Samaranch's mouth during the Games. Also on tap, we've got news from TKFLASTAN, including updates on Evan Dunfee, Dawn Harper Nelson, Connor Fields and Stephanie Roble. In our Beijing 2022 update, the Olympic Flame is officially lit and has traveled to Beijing, though not without controversy. The Torch Relay, of which there are few details, includes the inspiring slogan "Health, Joy and Energy." Alison is not impressed by Jill's attempts to spruce that up. And we have news from Milan-Cortina 2026, in which we are completely unsurprised to learn of venue changes due to cost containment needs. The Games aren't even for another 4+ years, but maybe it's a good thing that they've figured this out now. Thanks so much for listening, and until next time, keep the flame alive! She's never looked back from that chance meeting. She's played lots of sport and even got to carry the Olympic Torch on the Torch Relay ahead of London 2012. Charlotte talks about the extraordinary issues they've had as a squad during Covid which has limited severely the time they've been able to spend training together. It was a great time -- and we got a great interview with a Games Maker that we'll be featuring in a few weeks. The International Weightlifting Federation's world championships starts on Wednesday, September 18, so we thought it was a great time to learn about Olympic weightlifting and what this sport is all about. Joining us to explain it is the Voice of the People, Seb Ostrowicz, host of the Weightlifting House podcast and writer at its accompanying website. Seb talks with us about the two lifts that make up a weightlifting competition: the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. We also talk about: Weight classes, cutting weight and post-weigh-in eating The incredible flexibility and mobility of weightlifters Who to look out for at Tokyo 2020 Check out Weightlifting House! They're on Facebook, Insta and Twitter, and you can find the podcast on your favorite podcast player. We've also got news from Tokyo 2020 -- someone's not too happy about changes made to the Team Equestrian events! Also, if you've applied to be part of the Tokyo 2020 Torch Relay, don't hold your breath....there's a ton of applicants. Next week, we'll have more weightlifting fun, but this time from the other side of the stage. Weightlifting House's Dan Kent will tell us what it's like to referee a weightlifting competition (you know how Jill loves officiating chat, so this is going to be a good one!). Russia were widely expected to be welcomed back into athletics by the IAAF having been suspended for the Rio Olympics with Russia blocked across all sports by the IPC across all sports. We ask what next for Russia and can they take up a berth at Tokyo 2020.
