You may have a parent or a neighbor who has been sidelined by a stroke, a fall, or a surgery. You know that person has travelled the world, read lots of books, or has a passion for music. Now what? Our library system has evolved to provide much more than books. They offer classes and music and movies and direction to resources. What happens when a person who wants to experience the world can no longer leave his or her house? Across the country, there are programs to bring the library's resources to the homebound person. The reasons for this are important. A person's physical health depends on their mental well-being. Isolation is a public health hazard. Bringing books, music, and movies to that person will improve the person's outlook on life. In this episode, we hear from Christa Bassett and Sandi Koehler from the Cumberland County Library System. They bring not only the stories and music of the world to homebound people, but it's done in a way that includes companionship. This program not only improves the lives of homebound older adults. It provides purpose and meaning to the volunteers.

Michoel Weichbrod has been living a Torah-oriented life ever since he was a small child. And he spent that childhood learning Torah regularly. But it took moving to a community where people were focused a bit too much on "things," for Michoel to see what he had known about his entire life: That Israel is the manifest destiny for all Jews. He's passionate about this, and has launched a pretty incredible YouTube channel - Homebound to support that passion and hopefully influence many other Haredim to make the big move, too. The Finnish filmmaker Ilkka Järvi-Laturi, subject of an ongoing retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, made only three features in his life, each of which is maverick in its own right. His 1989 debut, Homebound, is a gritty realist film about a young man struggling to escape a cycle of violence; City Unplugged sets a heist in the wake of Estonia's independence in the 1990s. And History Is Made at Night, the strangest of the bunch, is an international, star-studded spy-thriller-slash-screwball-comedy set between New York City and Helsinki. The films together represent a unique creative vision—one that combines genre ambitions with a defiantly indie sensibility and unexpected sense of humor. To learn more about Järvi-Laturi's career, Film Comment editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish invited Steve Macfarlane, one of the curators of the MoMA retrospective, and Hannu Björkbacka, a Finnish critic, to the join Podcast. And if you live in New York, don't miss the screenings this week at MoMA.

Over the weekend, I saw a post that one of our Lettering Club members made that Sarah Young, 'Jesus Calling' author, passed away. She's touched the lives of so many people who have been blessed by her devotional. I learned that she faced many medical hardships during her life which forced her to be homebound, which led to my reflection on the people I love in my life who have faced unexpected circumstances that forced them to be homebound for extended amounts of time. Today, I'm sharing that reflection with you. Connect with us! Peruvian shaman Oscar Miro-Quesada says that "Consciousness creates matter, Language Creates Reality, Ritual creates relationship.” This week I'm speaking with someone who bring reality into being with words and weaves relational rituals. Abigail Morgan Prout is a poet, life coach, mother and visionary. She and I have been talking to one another for about three and a half years. We connected just before lockdown and then, as life became weirder, Abigail's daily poems were a bright flash in the whirling chaos, a doorway into a world halfway across the planet that was different in so many ways, and yet so often the same; a sense of soul connection to someone who gets it; an excoriating and sometimes intensely personal, vulnerable view into someone else's life, shared with great courage - and word-jewels of true beauty that connected me again to the wonder of the web of life, and the wonder of language. As a writer, I am always in absolute awe of the fact that we can make black marks on a white page and evoke the whole multi-dimensional, multi-sensory glory of human and More-Than-Human experience. As a prose writer, I am ever more in awe of the skill poets bring to their word-smithing, and Abigail's is beautiful, moving and inspiring at all levels. It's not just me that thinks so - Walk Deep, the collection that arose from lockdown won the 2021 Homebound Poetry Contest. So when Homebound published Walk Deep, I really wanted to bring Abigail onto the podcast - to talk about the process of writing, which is one of my more major obsessions, but also to talk about everything she brings to this -she's a life coach and a teacher of life coaches. She's a daughter and a mother and she holds ceremony in beautiful ways. We didn't touch much on this last in the main body of the podcast - but, as happens so often, as soon as I'd stopped recording, we talked about exactly this, and it seemed so profoundly important, that I hit record again and we added another ten minutes of what, to me, is not just podcasting gold, but human gold, spiritual gold; the account of someone's experience of a lifelong dream that came to life, but more than that, of the ways the web of life is so ready to connect with us and offer help if we can only open to hear it. So that's tacked on at the end, before the final credits.Abigail's website https://www.abigailprout.com/Spiral Leadership Method https://www.spiral-leadership.com/Accidental Gods Membership (the Intention Intensive is within the Membership) https://accidentalgods.life/join-us/Abigail on FB https://www.facebook.com/abigail.m.proutInstagram: @Insta: abigail_Morgan_prout

For a patient to be eligible to receive covered home health services, they must be deemed “confined to the home” or homebound. The time has come to demystify the two conditions, or criterion, which formulate the groundwork of the homebound status. Magic words such as “taxing effort” do not, in and of themselves, deem one homebound. Only by exploring the physiological implications of the patient's health status can a classification of homebound be accurately determined. This podcast will examine the meaning behind criterion one and two of the homebound eligibility requirement and provide strategies to integrate elements of the patient physical assessment into a tailored and accurate homebound justification statement while guiding therapists through the development of evidence-based home health interventions to promote functional performance and safety in daily activities and mobility. Speaking for myself, I was horrified. No one should be subjected to this type of behavior. It's one thing to read statistics about how much abuse occurs in the United States, especially to women with disabilities. It's quite another to hear about it first-hand. I hope this raises awareness and leads to more accountability within medical practices nationally. Ann's Bio: Ann did not grow up in one place because her father was in the navy. We moved so often I was the “new girl” in nine different schools before I graduated high school. I am by nature, very shy. Always being the “new kid” helped me learn how to make friends, but I also learned how to be happy alone. I loved to read, so the friends that followed me from place to place were the ones I found in stories. I was five years old when our family left Jacksonville, Florida. My father was assigned to the military base in Charleston, S.C. We were in Charleston for eight years, but we lived in three different houses and I went to four different schools during those years. All of us liked to fish. We spent many days sitting on the sides of bridges while we fished until our shoulders and legs were tanned a deep copper. I remember climbing over rubble at Ft. Sumter where my imagination ran wild thinking of cannon fire and shouting soldiers. We walked along beaches while Dad told us tales of pirates. He insisted we were walking over treasure that pirates had buried in the sand beneath our feet. I think I get my imagination from my father. When Dad was transferred to Groton, Connecticut, my brother Mike and I played in snow for the first time while Dad helped weld together the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. In Yorktown, Va., we waited until the tide went out so that we could find lead musket balls left over from colonial battles. No matter where we lived, I learned that life was a grand adventure and every day is a gift of unlimited possibilities. There were only a few certainties in my uncertain life. I knew I was responsible for packing my own stuff. I was also responsible for keeping up in school and at home. I learned at an early age that good people can be found everywhere. I realized that a home does not depend on the house you put it in. These were all priceless lessons to learn at an early age. I graduated from Florida State University, and served as a teacher with the Peace Corps in Liberia, West Africa. This is where I met and married Jim, another Peace Corps volunteer. We returned home and settled in Evansville, Indiana where it made me so happy to live in one house for more than thirty years. Over the years, I have been a middle-grade reading teacher, a youth minister, and a college counselor. Through it all, I have been a writer and now I am adding podcaster to that.
