In this episode we welcome back renown marketer Kirt Daunt to talk about putting marketing to work in your firm. In particular, we drill into what comes next after putting the marketing foundations (brand, website, case studies etc) in place. To squeeze the utmost out of this interview with Kirt, we pitched him headlong into real life scenarios that listeners will relate to, such as –Introducing current clients to a new service, as well increasing the uptake of services provided by other divisions of one's firmWhat to do if the work that you do is a “best kept secret” in your community plus how to tactfully play your hand while serving on the committee of the golf club or on the board of your children's schoolWhat comes next when a prospective client makes an expression of interest, such as downloading a strategy paper or coming along to one of your eventsThroughout the interview, Kirt shares many timeless marketing principles which have served him well at the top end of town, linking them to the scenarios being considered for a professional services firm. Literally, there are too many to list here but here's a sample –“When someone's adding value in your life, that's a relationship you come back to”“What do your customers care about?”“Marketing is the pursuit of ruthless experimentation”“Your marketing plan is as much about the things you are not going to do as the things you will do.”During the interview, Kirt made mention of a summary of some key concepts covered in his earlier podcast (Episode 69). Selling Professional Services Show Notes In this episode we talk with Ryan Devillers of Slipstream Coaching about selling professional services. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss what makes a good salesperson and how partners of busy accounting and financial services firms tend to focus on current clients rather than prospective clients. Ryan also shares some interesting thoughts about looking internally for someone who might be best to engage with prospective clients. If you are thinking that such a person should be a principal in the firm…think again! Later, in the Coach’s Corner, Scott passes on some observations of his own from working in some dynamic, sales-orientated organisations. In particular he discusses how and why such companies achieve revenue growth that is leaps and bounds ahead of professional practices where “doing the work” is the predominant activity. In the interview Ryan mentioned a book he is currently reading, being Atomic Habits by James Clear. He also mentioned reading Your Professional Headspace by Scott Charlton. Achieving through others – leading your financial services firm Show Notes In this episode we talk with Jacqui Sherlock of Sherlock Wealth and Irma Bantjes of Stratus Financial Group about leadership in professional service firms. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss engaging managers from a non-technical background to the role of CEO and the areas of the business that receive more attention as a consequence of the leader not having a client caseload. We consider when such an appointment should be made and the important role that the CEO can play in developing the team – as Jacqui says, “Creating star makers not being the star” Getting the best out of one’s team is a theme that features throughout the discussion. Both Jacqui and Irma share many terrific ideas from what they are doing in their respective firms to foster performance. We also contrast traditional ways that firms have dealt with issues such as recruitment; performance reviews; team training and marketing with how these are dealt with by a professional manager. The differences are quite profound. In the interview Jacqui and Irma also mentioned some books from which they have found insights, details of which appear below – Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, Verne Harnish Good to Great, Jim Collins Follow this link to access the free download from Scott Charlton’s book, “The Bold Accountant”, being the chapter entitled, “Why an accountant shouldn’t be in charge”: slipstreamcoaching.com.au/the-bold-acc-20-download/ To purchase Scott’s book, “Your Professional Headspace”, which was mentioned during the Coach’s Corner segment, go to his website: www.scottcharlton.com.au/purchase/ Jacqui’s contact details are Email: jacqui@sherlockwealth.com Phone: 02 8247 9900 Web: sherlockwealth.com Linked In: www.linkedin.com/in/jacqui-sherlock-9b962948/ Irma’s contact details are Email: ibantjes@stratusfinancialgroup.com.au Phone: 07 3007 2007 Web: stratusfinancialgroup.com.au Linked In: www.linkedin.com/in/irma-bantjes-0729a1157/ Scott’s contact details are: Email: scott@slipstreamcoaching.com.au Phone: 0409 870 330 Web: slipstreamcoaching.com.au Linked In: linkedin.com/in/scottcharlton To take an interest in Tim Lane’s music, which is featured on the episode: Facebook: The Backstick Agenda. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss how to work effectively as a remote member of an organisation; the importance of having structured meeting routines and ways to compensate for no longer having spontaneous “discussions in the corridor” with work colleagues. So too, having structure to one’s working day along with definite start and end points help to ensure that work does not “take over” one’s existence. Dr Brandon shares some interesting aspects about attracting and retaining talented people. In his case, having a captivating company mission certainly has a role to play in getting the best out of his team. Back of the Net - The AFC Bournemouth Podcast

Cherries went down 2-1 at home to Arsenal in the Cup on Monday night, evidently with half an eye on the more substantial "cup tie" at the weekend against Aston Villa in the Premier League. Six changes were made and it was a below par AFC Bournemouth who somehow flattered themselves by producing a scoreline which, to the naked eye, suggests the contest was closer than it was. Eddie will see the two most recent games as a learning curve, where we need to take the best out of the Brighton performance, leaving the worst of the Arsenal game behind, and in this podcast we cover both of our latest home fixtures in league and cup, with Neil Dawson covering the scenes against the Seagulls, and Jeff Hayward getting involved for the Gunners game. As well the comprehensive match chats, we also take in some of your thoughts from both games too, whilst including some rather raw match audio which contains the odd F bomb - the excitement of seeing Callum score was just way too much! Along with the usual Do You Remember trivia, we also preview the Aston Villa game on Saturday, where home fans will be hoping for and expecting nothing less than a win, in a crucial fixture which could once again be season-defining! Shoehorned into this bumper hour long pod is a chat with Scott Charlton and Dave Fitzgerald from Lashings, who are running a unique AFCB themed event on April 2nd 2020 at the Village Hotel in Bournemouth -  featuring stars of Cherries past including Luther Blissett, Paul Morrell, and Steve Jones - who are all going to be sharing THEIR stories of their careers in football, especially at Bournemouth - as well as giving their thoughts on the latest goings on at Dean Court.

The FASEA requirements with Neil Kendall In this episode, we talk with Neil Kendall about the pending Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA) requirements. In a wide ranging interview, we cover many aspects of FASEA and what this will mean for financial advisers. Amongst a range of highly relevant topics, we discuss the qualifications required of advisers, the FASEA exam and what the approved code of ethics course is likely to entail. We also look at the situation for new advisers entering the financial planning profession and what will be expected of them in order to become fully qualified, including the proposed Professional Year. The expectations for CPD are also canvassed, particularly in relation to professional standards and ethics. Neil also shares his expectations with respect to how FASEA will impact stock brokers, risk specialists and accountants. His analogy relating to the medical profession here is particularly illuminating. Resources The consultation papers released by FASEA referred to on during this podcast can be found on the FASEA website: www.fasea.com.au The resources provided by the Financial Planning Association (FPA) are available on the FPA website: www.fpa.com.au. These can be found within: Advocacy; Policy issues; Education and professional standards requirements. The infographics on for existing financial planners and for new entrants are particularly helpful and hence are highly recommended. Scott’s book, Your Professional Headspace was also mentioned, due to the content it includes in Chapter 14 on going back to study.
