Over in the US on Tuesday, rising bond yields are pressured equities for a second session this week. The US 10-Year Treasury note yield briefly topped 4.2% for the first time in months before pulling back. The Dow Jones fell 0.02%, the S&P 500 lost 0.05% lower but the tech heavy Nasdaq ended the day up 0.18%.In Europe overnight, markets closed lower as investors assessed key corporate earnings results. The STOXX 600 fell 0.2%, Germany's DAX also lost 0.2%, the French CAC fell 0.01% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day down 0.14%.Across the Asia region on Tuesday, markets closed mostly lower in the region tracking global market sell-offs early in the week. China's CSI index bucked the sea of red to rise 0.57% on Tuesday while South Korea's Kospi Index fell 1.31%, and Japan's Nikkei lost 1.39%. Hyundai Motor shares debuted on India's stock exchange on Tuesday with a record IPO but shares ended the day down 7%.The local market started the week higher before closing 1.66% lower on Tuesday in line with the Wall Street's pullback on Monday. With markets now factoring the need for a less aggressive rate cut strategy out of the US as inflation eases and the economy remains resilient, investors are now questioning how much steam the local and global market rally has left.Mineral Resources and WiseTech Global have been under pressure this week amid news and respective investigations into those at the helm of the mining and logistics technology company alike.Audinate Group fell over 6% on Tuesday after the media software provider released a quarterly update outlining weak performance in a challenging operating environment was the key reason for full-year gross profit missing the target.Toll roads operator Transurban also fell almost 2% yesterday despite reaffirming FY25 distribution guidance of 65cps and reported growth in traffic across its key markets aside from Melbourne. One element of positivity in the Aussie market yesterday was Australian consumer confidence jumping to its highest level since January last year last week with a rise to 87.5 points, or a 4.1 point rise as the outlook for inflation eases and consumer sentiment was boosted by strong Australian jobs data also released last week.Wine exports from Australia also climbed 34% to $2.39bn in the 12-months to the end of September which is a welcomed boost for listed companies like Treasury Wine Estates which has faced tougher operating conditions prior to China lifting its tariffs on Aussie wine exports recently. What to watch today:Ahead of the midweek trading session here in Australia the SPI futures are expecting the ASX to open the day up 0.28% despite the pullback on Wall St on Tuesday. On the commodities front this morning oil is trading 2.26% higher at US$71.63/barrel, gold is up 0.92% at US$2746/ounce, and iron ore is down 0.13% at US$105.23/tonne.The Aussie dollar has weakened against the greenback overnight to buy US$0.66, 101.03 Japanese Yen, 51.39 British Pence and NZ$1.11.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has decreased the 12-month price target on Select Harvests (ASX:SHV) from $4.95 to $4.60 and maintain a buy rating on the almond producer following a disappointing FY24 update including a capital raising and the guidance for FY24 underlying EBIT of $17-19m which is lower than Bell Potter was expecting. Bell Potter maintains the buy rating due to recent strengthening in almond prices driving upside potential. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on The Star Entertainment Group (ASX:SGR) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 17-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of 27cps to the range of 15 cps to 17 cps according to standard principles of technical analysis.

The ASX had a comeback today, recovering losses from the previous day despite energy sector drags. Woodside Energy's shares plummeted by 3.7%, hitting a one-month low after a disappointing quarterly update and recent acquisition concerns. The overall market sentiment was boosted by positive cues from Wall Street, with tech and health care stocks seeing significant gains. Notable movements included Transurban's rise following a partnership announcement for motorway upgrades, PolyNovo's surge driven by growing demand for its burn treatment products, and a substantial increase in gold miner Spartan Resources' share price.   The content in this podcast is prepared, approved and distributed in Australia by Commonwealth Securities Limited ABN 60 067 254 399 AFSL 238814. Woolworths (ASX:WOW) The supermarket giant has taken significant ESG actions from both environmental and social perspectives such as replacing its petrol-fuelled delivery fleet with electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and the launch of Mini Woolies, a program supporting the education and skills of young Australians with disabilities… The dilution of Woolworths' association with gambling, alcohol and tobacco was a major step in achieving the company's ESG goals. Morgans recently upgraded Woolworths to a buy rating while Citi and UBS also have respective buy ratings on the supermarket giant on the back of strong FY23 results, particularly earnings growth in Australian Food. 2. Perpetual (ASX:PPT) The Perpetual Private Investment research team is accountable for the Responsible Investment related reporting and reviewing of all Perpetual Private portfolios which includes ensuring that all ESG factors are appropriately considered throughout the entire investment process… Furthermore, Perpetual offers thematic investing options that enable clients to align their portfolios with ESG elements that resonate most with their objectives. The global financial services firm is also a signatory to the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) to incorporate ESG issues into all investment analysis and decision making. 3. Transurban Group (ASX:TCL) Operates a diversified suite of Australian toll road assets and toll roads in Northern Virginia in the United States, has also been a popular investment choice among investors and brokers for its ESG commitments. Transurban boasts ESG-related awards and recognition from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency of Australia, Equileap and the Ethibel socially responsible investment register. It's also had an MSCI ESG Rating of AAA for the past five years and it became the first ASX20 company to be validated by the Science Based Targets initiative… UBS and Macquarie both have buy ratings on Transurban and the company's shares are up 16% over the last five years. In the recent high inflationary environment companies like Transurban have been the beneficiaries of rising inflation as it has an inflation-linked revenue stream with annual escalators through toll road concessions being inflation-linked.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2023's Top 10 Ethical Banks Leading the ESG Revolution Next, I have this article on ethical banks around the world, titled 2023's Top 10 Ethical Banks Leading the ESG Revolution. And what about those rebates that some drivers are able to get back from toll payments? Well, the government foots that bill... Which means those payments end up coming out of your pocket through taxes anyway. This time we try out something new! Instead of interviewing experts on subjects of their expertise, this time I took world-class risk specialists for a brainstorming session. And while sitting together, we discussed something out of this world - the fire safety of Mars habitats. This podcast episode is literally a recording of the conversation between the panellists, it is very unscripted and lightly edited. I really hope you will feel like a part of this conversation, and if you would like to voice your ideas - share them on socials or mail them directly to me. If you have ideas on future brainstorming sessions and who you would like to see at the table. please let me know!In today's brainstorming session, the discussion is held between:Ruben van Coile - professor at Ghent University and renowned expert in risk and structural engineering. Listen to his previous and previous episodes on risk, and his new project to shift the paradigm of fire safety. Jaime Cadena Gomez - risk specialist, an expert at Transurban with practical experience in tunnelling,  has a background in chemical engineering. Listen to Jaimes' episode on Maximum Allowable Damage method he was developing in his PhD.Szymek Matkowski - an architect whose passion is to design Mars habitats, involved with Nexus Aurora and known for his research on evacuation in low-Gyours truly Wojciech Wegrzynski - in this case, space enthusiast and advocate for risk and performance-based approach to fire safetyBackground of the discussion: Our exciting and exploratory discussion revolves around the concept of a Mars habitat, examining the unique challenges of maintaining resources on Mars and unpacking how these factors influence the longevity of the structures. Fire can become a catastrophic disaster, especially in a volatile environment like Mars. Our conversation dives into the expense of safety solutions, and the potentially devastating implications of a fire on Mars.

Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of Australia was forced to cough up internal documents under Freedom of Information laws. This included an internal modelling exercise from September 2022, which revealed the risk of an Australian recession could be as high as 80% by September 2024. Meanwhile, a recent Bloomberg survey of 14 economists saw the probability of a recession in Australia climb from 35% to 38% in April.  Investors themselves, through their positioning, seem to be suggesting the same. Shares in classic defensive names such as Transurban (up 14%), Woolworths (up 15%), Wesfarmers (up 9%), Coles (up 15%), Telstra (up 10%), Origin Energy (up 9%) and AGL (up 11%) have continued to tick higher since the beginning of the year.  And yet, Tribeca Investment Partners' Jun Bei Liu is unflinchingly bullish. She doesn't believe the Australian economy will nosedive into a hard landing in the next few months or years. Instead, she argues the noise in markets has created extraordinary investment opportunities today.  In this episode, Liu shares:  Three rules for investors to live by.  Her macro outlook for the years ahead.  Why there is still fuel left in the tank when it comes to the China reopening.  Her top long and short positions right now.  Note: This episode was recorded on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 Timestamps  0:00 - Intro  1:25 - Three rules investors should live by 4:58 - Jun Bei's North Star for volatile markets  7:34 - Jun Bei's base case: Why she doesn't believe Australia will experience a recession  12:38 - The China re-opening theme isn't over yet (and the stocks' Jun Bei is backing) 19:53 - Jun Bei's earnings outlook for the ASX  21:55 - Companies facing margin pressure over the months ahead  23:11 - Why Jun Bei is shorting Super Retail Group (ASX: SUL) 26:20 - And why she's backing A2 Milk (ASX: A2M), NEXTDC (ASX: NXT), Macquarie Group (ASX: MQG), REA Group (ASX: REA), Xero (ASX: XRO), TechnologyOne (ASX: TNE), Pilbara Minerals (ASX: PLS) and Treasury Wine Estates (ASX: TWE).  28:55 - The unloved stocks Jun Bei is loving right now 32:26 - The importance of emotional intelligence when it comes to investing  36:49 - The best CEO and management teams in Australia  39:30 - The Rules of Investing's three favourite questions (what investors are getting wrong, a big win and loss, and a stock Jun Bei would back for the next 5 years)
