Pastor Naeem Fazal, Lead Pastor at Mosaic Church and author of his second book, Tomorrow Needs You, joins hosts Roy Jacques, Abbie Love, and Joey Svendsen to talk about the book and a little about his time as a former pastor at Seacoast Church. In Tomorrow Needs You, Naeem accounts for his own pain, as well as the pain he has seen others walk through recently—some from senseless tragedy. Naeem empathizes with anyone who doubts whether the world is better tomorrow and encourages us all with the truth—tomorrow needs each one of us. Naeem reminds us to slow down and recognize the beauty in humanity and that we all have a purpose. With deep conversation and lots of laughs, the four discuss being free from fear, if safety is something God promises, how treating God as a transactional "genie" leads to religion, and what's at stake if God doesn't redeem all things. The true meaning of a caregiver is often lost; and the heaviness that weighs on a person in that role is even less known. On this episode, we'll talk with Mary Tutterow, a fellow Seacoaster and founder of "The Heart of a Caregiver" ministry. Mary and her husband serve as caregivers for their daughter—and will continue to for the rest of their lives. Mary shares their story that birthed a ministry that now reaches families around the world. It's a story of learning the meaning of life and living the Gospel—a calling for all of us.Through Mary's own experiences, she helped Seacoast Church become aware of the needs of these families and helped launch the Won by One ministry, a safe place for children with special needs to learn about the love of God.At the top of the episode, with Mother's Day 2025 this week, the three hosts "on duty" pay tribute to their own moms. Click this link to purchase an online pass, which includes livestream access to all sessions and exclusive content for online pass holders]On this episode, speaker, author, and theologian scholar, Dr. Lisa Harper, joins hosts Lynne Stroy and Joey Svendsen to talk about her new book, A Jesus-Shaped Life: How Diving Deeper into Theology Can Transform Us and Our World with the Radical Kindness of God. In her book, Lisa shares personal stories, with a fair share of humor, to reveal how the Holy Spirit has shown her that following Jesus should cause her to become more like him. Its pages theologically support this revelation and explain why studying the Scriptures should make us all more like Jesus. Along the way, Lisa shares fascinating, and perhaps surprising context behind the terminology "Word of God," why it's important to remember that the Bible isn't part of the Trinity, and what believers miss out on by not maintaining a truly restful posture with their maker. Slotkin]Part 1 can be listened toor viewed on YouTube.Part 2 can be listened to here. Joey, Jon, Gail, and Billy have talked twice and now they (and you) get to hear from some of their friends from youth group, peers who've listened in on those other episodes. Mike Colon, one of Joey's best friends in high school, shares an experience he had in church; racism from a peer's parent. It affected him for life. Penny reflects on getting married right out of high school; after a divorce and experiencing multiple tragedies, she yelled at God, now feels closer to Him than ever, but isn't currently part of a church. [This Episode's crew: Stoy Prioleau, Joey Svendsen, Ellen Mauro, Hayne Griffin]Stoy and Joey have lost all hope in the government, not voting for any presidential candidate, Hayne and Ellen didn't get the results they wanted, it affected Ellen deeply. Joey feels guilty about his emotional-less relationship with politics, recognizing his privilege likely plays a part in this. Ellen is frustrated with compassionate people who don't vote, like Joey and Stoy and fears the worst with this second Trump presidency. Hayne doesn't think the extant of Ellen's fears are warranted and Stoy doesn't understand why Ellen has any hope in the system, in the first place. Joey asks Ellen how she'd have reacted if one of the guys voted for Trump, Ellen has plans of starting a "white women only" group, hoping to rally "her kind" (not her words) to be proactive in fighting against the racism and misogyny she believes Trump voters have turned a blind eye to. Jon wants to know what Joey actually cherishes from the old youth group days, Billy concurs that the guilt was excessive but the relationships were so dear to him, also traveled from Chicago last year just to be at the reunion. Gail reflects back on what she describes as having had a feeling of unworthiness, especially when she was around the other Christians who appeared to have "their stuff" together. [Produced by Stoy Prioleau, with Hayne, Stoy, Amy and Joey]On Part 1 of this conversation, "Firefighter Hayne, Doing the Lord's Work in Ravaged North Carolina," listeners heard stories of Helene's destruction in Western North Carolina through the personal story of our firefighting friend, Hayne Griffin, recounting that dreadful night that took his whole community by surprise. As the conversation carried on during the recording, the hosts got into some theology about God and prayer, in the context of natural disasters. This "part 2" captures that deeper layer of discussion including Joey's lack of faith in praying for storms to turn away and the nuance of reframing "natural disasters" as simply "nature." and how things are. [Honoring our brother, Hayne Griffin, who's been doing the Lord's work, with Hayne, Stoy, Amy and Joey] During the night of the 26th of September, Hurricane Helene took western North Carolina by storm, pun intended. What would follow is complete devastation of houses, businesses, electricity, dependable water supply, roads, and human life. Hear Hayne's story of that night on duty as a firefighter, 16 years experience in his field, as he went to bed anticipating a busy night. He just never in his wildest dreams could have imagined. Amy, Joey and Stoy sit with Hayne to hear his story, check in on their pal who's carrying a lot right now. They ask clarifying questions to get a clear sense of the current conditions and together reflect on societal observations, including the difference between "people being irresponsible in dangerous situations" and "people simply uneducated and/or lacking the resources to stay safe." Hayne and his family are in the middle of processing the horror and beauty all around them. Special thanks to Hayne, rescue workers and volunteers who help keep us safe. Even when we're dumb. The conversation wraps on some theology about God and prayer, in the context of natural disasters. But we hit the pause button before we got too far down that road, as we're saving that portion for a part II. We wanted Hayne's story to stand on its own two, on this one. Pastor of Leadership Care at Seacoast Church, Chip Judd, takes great strides in seeking out truth. But, with a background in drugs, eastern mysticism and reckless living, Jesus had to find Chip. Since then, he has restored Chip's life, made him a charismatic preacher, revealed to him his gift of counseling and strategically positioned Chip to speak truth about the science of mental health as well as the power of God to restore fallen humanity. In this unique time when the church seems to be in the early stages of trending toward a healthy disposition in interacting with the real challenges that come along with mental health, Chip has much to say. [This episode was produced by Joey Svendsen and is joined by three friends from Joey's youth group days: Jon Bazzle, Gail Santavicca, and Billy Jones]you can watch this conversation on YouTube here. Joey joins three old friends from the old youth group, all but one are still Christians but you'll never guess; all four contributors have changed much. Joey shares with his friends on this episode that, due to his current beliefs, the old church family, or at least many of them, would probably have a hard time believing that Joey is still a Christian. Billy, or shall we call him "Youth Group Superman," was surprised to hear how highly revered he was by his peers back in the day. Gail has a child who is a trans person and admittedly was ready to pounce as a mother bear, in the event of possible conversation that's derogatory to the LGBTQ community. Jon definitely still swears as an adult but shares how as a youngster, he didn't truly understand -- or walk out -- Jesus' command to love others. [This episode, produced by Joey Svendsen, has Ellen Mauro, Jed Payne, Joey Svendsen, and special guest and original host to the show, Jared Svendsen]Televangelists like Kenneth Copeland's behavior don't appear reflective of God by any means, and it certainly seems as if people are being led astray by the sort of prosperity gospel teaching he espouses. However, there seems to be more to Mr. Copeland's story and it's difficult ruling out just plain 'ol evil. Thus, Ellen, Jed, Jared and Joey do not.The four also get an update from their good friend and co-host of the show, Hayne Griffen, a firefighter in Asheville NC smack dab in the middle of search and recovery, trying to help put the pieces of his community back together. This episode was originally recorded in July of 2016, shortly after Donald Trump became the Republican Party's presidential candidate. Little did we know at the time of this conversation, that in 5 short months, he would be the next president of the United States of America. [show-notes from episode 40] We talk to non-trump supporter Jack Hoey (the father) and Trump-Supporter, Kerry Haplin about how Trump pulled off the miracle of being a frontrunner in the presidential race, we discussed his chances at winning, and what major changes are in store for America with a Trump presidency. Is he trustworthy? Could he bring a deconstruction to the ineffective politics we all have trouble believing in? Is the potential value of a Trump presidency worth the risk that comes from having a loose canon in the Oval office? Our guests have some strong opinions on all these matters.Get The B-Sides Feed Facebook Discussion Group here.E-mail the PWNA team here.Theme Song, other Music by Stoy Prioleau (aka: Riggy Roc): Apple MusicOther music: Derek Minor. Married for 30 years to Gibson Hopper, she has three daughters, two sons-in-love, and eleven grandchildren. Show Summary: When was the last time you reached a moment where the only thing you could do was surrender your circumstance to the Lord? Deb Hopper was a single mom with two daughters when a good friend of hers sat her down and told her about a method of praying that would help her surrender her stresses to God. She knew God would answer in His way and in His timing, but she fully placed her needs into His hands. Join Deb as she shares her story with God Hears Her hosts Vivian Mabuni and Eryn Eddy Adkins during this God Hears Her conversation. Notes and Quotes: “I used the [Ask, Seek, Knock] principle to reach up to God out of the pit, to trust Him, and believe He could help me in the most complex areas of my life, and the most simplest of things.” —Deb Hopper “I don't think we talk about answered prayers enough. But in reality, He does move. He does answer prayers. And if we don't talk about them in our natural, everyday life, then why would people pray?” —Deb Hopper “But once I took that first step, God provided the obvious answer for me.” —Deb Hopper “We need God's light to shine on our answers. We need to go to His Word. We need to ask, ‘Does this line up with what God says? Is this true?' ” —Deb Hopper “[God] has the plan. And if you're faithful to do the next right thing, He doesn't waste a minute of it.” —Deb Hopper “Acknowledging God in the promotion, in a child being born, in the marriage, we are acknowledging that we didn't do it on our own.
