They explore the challenges faced by the ERLC, its role in representing Southern Baptists in political matters, and the tensions that arise from differing views on its purpose. The discussion also touches on the ongoing debates regarding women in pastoral roles, the future of the SBC's governing documents, and the perception of a liberal drift within the convention. It's Thursday, May 1st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Police attacked Christians in India The All India Christian Council called out officials in Odisha State, India last week for violence against Christians. The council found that police assaulted tribal Christians, attacking women, children, and priests back in March.  International Christian Concern reported a particularly disturbing event. “A 62-year-old woman who had buried her husband just hours earlier was also allegedly beaten up, along with her 17-year-old daughter, while they were in mourning.” The council noted that officials did not take any formal action against the violent police personnel. Proverbs 11:20-21 says, “Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are His delight. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.” 47 percent of Germans are religiously unaffiliated A new study found that people who identify with no religion outnumbered Protestants and Catholics in Germany for the first time last year. These religiously unaffiliated make up a shocking 47 percent of the country's population. Catholics represent 24 percent of the population, and Protestants represent 21 percent. Together, Catholics and Protestants lost over one million members last year in Germany. Meanwhile, the number of Muslims in the country increased by 80,000 last year. Supreme Court could allow publicly-funded religious charter school In the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday in a case that could lead to the nation's first publicly-funded religious charter school. Oklahoma's charter school board approved funding for St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School. However, the state's attorney general is challenging the decision. Conservative justices on the high court appeared supportive of the religious charter school. Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters told CBN News what the case is all about. WALTERS: “It's about the freedom to express your religious beliefs without being penalized by the government. And it's about school choice and making sure that parents actually have that power over their kids' education. Avinger, Texas is 74th Sanctuary City for the Unborn Avinger, Texas is the 74th city in the country to become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn. The city council passed the measure in a 3-1 vote on Monday. Avinger resident and former State Representative David Simpson said, “Avinger is blessed to join cities and counties across Texas who are going as far as they can to address the tragedy of abortion, specifically abortion trafficking and the mailing of abortion-inducing drugs.” U.S. economy shrank in first quarter The U.S. economy shrank during the first quarter of this year. The Gross Domestic Product fell 0.3 percent compared to last year. This was the biggest decline since 2022. Economic growth slowed as businesses tried to stock up on imports ahead of President Donald Trump's tariffs. And federal government spending was down 5.1 percent this year. Membership drops again among Southern Baptists Membership declined in the Southern Baptist Convention for the 18th consecutive year in 2024. The U.S. denomination grew from about seven million members in the 1950s to a peak of over 16 million in the mid-2000s. Since then, it has declined to 12.7 million members last year. However, the Southern Baptist Convention baptized 250,000 people last year, a 10 percent jump from 2023.  Kevin Ezell, the president of the North American Mission Board said, “We celebrate every baptism and every new life in Christ. It's encouraging to see these numbers continue to move upward.” Capitol Hill's Bible Reading Marathon And finally, Christians gathered on Capitol Hill to read the entire Bible aloud. The Bible Reading Marathon started Saturday and finished yesterday.  For 90 continuous hours, Christians read from Genesis to Revelation in Washington, D.C. Keith Davidson led the event. He told The Christian Post, “Our goal is to bring attention back to our legislators, of course, and to get the attention back on the word of God. And then for [legislators] to remember that's where our nation's foundation is at, and also, for people who are reading, to let them publicly express their faith.” In an interview on Washington Watch with Tony Perkins, Mike Herbster, Director of Southland Christian Ministries, talked about the power of reading the Bible aloud in the capital of Louisiana, like they did on Capitol Hill. HERBSTER: “We know that the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. [Hebrews 4:12] We know that obviously, as the word of God goes forth, the Bible says it will not return void. [Isaiah 55:11] So, even in the public declaration of it out loud to our state, even though not everybody will hear all of it, we know that some will hear some of it.” Deuteronomy 31:10-11 says, “And Moses commanded them, saying: ‘At the end of every seven years … when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God … you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, May 1st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Our guest, Reverend Jay Hardwick, senior pastor of Forest Hills Baptist Church and president of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, joins us as we discuss the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). We learn about the SBC's origins, core beliefs, and unique church governance structure. Southern Baptist churches operate independently while cooperating for missions and theological education. baptism by immersion, the Lord's Supper, and the autonomy of local churches highlight how Southern Baptists remain committed to biblical teachings while maintaining flexibility in church operations. This is Part 1 of our episode on the Southern Baptist Convention. Tune in next week for Part 2.Here's What We Discussed!00:00 IntroTiffany and Pastor Jeff introduce the SBC, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The SBC was founded in 1845 in Augusta, Georgia, to collaborate in church planting, training pastors, and sending missionaries. Southern Baptists are united by core theological beliefs, including the inerrancy of Scripture and the exclusivity of Christ, while working together to spread the gospel.07:14 Beliefs on BaptismBaptism by immersion is a key belief in the Southern Baptist faith. It symbolizes a believer's identification with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection. Reverend Jay explains that baptism follows a personal confession of faith and does not contribute to salvation but serves as a public declaration.10:35 The Lord's Supper Reverend Jay discusses how Southern Baptist churches observe the Lord's Supper as a symbolic act of remembrance. He explains that the frequency of communion varies by church and emphasizes its role in reflecting on Christ's sacrifice and anticipating His return.19:07 Church Autonomy The SBC operates with local church autonomy, meaning each congregation is self-governed while voluntarily cooperating with state and national SBC organizations for mission work and theological training. Jay clarifies that there is no central governing body dictating church practices.22:45 Elders, Deacons and Mission Efforts The leadership structure within SBC churches highlights the roles of elders and deacons. Some churches follow a traditional deacon-led model, while others incorporate elder-led leadership to guide the church in spiritual and administrative matters. The Southern Baptist Cooperative Program allows churches to pool resources to support missions, theological education, and outreach efforts locally and globally. Jay emphasizes the importance of cooperation in fulfilling the SBC's mission.29:39 Stay Tuned Next Week!In part 2 of our conversation, we discuss the North American Mission Board and how the SBC collaborates to plant churches, train leaders, and support evangelism efforts across North America through initiatives like the SEND Network.Join the ConversationWe love your feedback! Send us a Text Message.Discover the inner workings of Southern Baptist churches with our esteemed guest, Dr. Michael Cloer, as we explore their unique structure and mission in this enlightening episode of "More Than Medicine." Understand how these churches operate as a voluntary network, emphasizing local autonomy while fostering a strong cooperative spirit to fulfill the Great Commission. Learn about the important roles played by the International Mission Board and the North American Mission Board, which collectively support thousands of missionaries around the globe. We also provide an insider's look at the Southern Baptist Convention's annual gathering in Indianapolis, renowned as the world's largest business meeting, where representatives make pivotal decisions to shape their mission and ministry efforts. Our conversation takes a deeper turn as we examine the critical doctrinal beliefs that set Southern Baptists apart, particularly their unwavering commitment to the authority of the Bible. Reflecting on the liberal shifts of the 1960s and 1970s that divided many mainline denominations, we contrast this with the Southern Baptists' firm stance in the early 1980s to uphold biblical authority, which continues to influence their practices today. We also discuss the organizational challenges faced by the United Methodist Church due to its more liberal trajectory, resulting in a mass exodus of members. This episode underscores the Southern Baptists' focus on gospel centrality, doctrinal fidelity, and missional urgency, emphasizing their relentless commitment to spreading the message of Jesus Christ to those who have yet to hear it. Don't miss this compelling discussion with Dr. Michael Cloer for a deeper understanding of the Southern Baptist Convention and its global mission.https://www.jacksonfamilyministry.comhttps://bobslone.com/home/podcast-production/

German church hosts worship service featuring Taylor Swift | Todd Coconato Show  Website: www.PastorTodd.org To give and support this ministry: www.ToddCoconato.com/give A centuries-old church in Germany drew more than 1,200 people on Sunday for worship services featuring the music of Taylor Swift. The Church of the Holy Spirit, a famous church in Heidelberg that meets in a 600-year-old building, put on a service titled "Anti-Hero — Taylor Swift Church Service" over the weekend in an effort to draw the interest of young people, according to Deutsche Welle (DW). "The Church of the Holy Spirit has always been a place of encounter and exchange. That's why a pop-music religious service fits so perfectly," Pastor Christof Ellsiepen told the outlet. "With it, we are giving space to the questions and issues that occupy the younger generation." The service focused on the supposedly strong Christian themes in Swift's music that address hot-button issues such as women's rights, racism and gender equality, according to the pastor. Parish Pastor Vincenzo Petracca acknowledged that Swift has taken flak from some Evangelical faith leaders for her music, especially in the United States. "Theologically speaking, she points to the justness of God," Petracca said, adding that Swift's "faith knows doubt and inner-conflict." "For her, faith and action are inseparable," he said. Two Sunday services in the historic church featured Swift's tunes, which DW noted were attended by an audience that skewed young and female. A rainbow banner behind the musicians noted that the church welcomes "all sizes, all [colors], all cultures, all sexes, all beliefs, all religions, all ages, all types, all people." While noting that the church was "built for Gregorian liturgical music and not for Taylor Swift," Petracca maintained that he was moved by the response to the modern, pop-themed service. "I stared into beaming faces — and during the song that Taylor wrote for her cancer-stricken mother, many had tears in their eyes," he said, referring to the song "Soon You'll Get Better." Swift's latest album, released last month, drew criticism from some Christian critics who claimed it features lyrical content that mocks God and Christians. Shane Pruitt, who serves as National Next Gen director for the Southern Baptist Convention's North American Mission Board and co-author of Calling Out the Called, urged parents to seriously reconsider allowing their children to listen to Swift's music. "I'm definitely not the minister or parent that has the 'no secular music' stance," Pruitt wrote in a Facebook post. "Also, I fully realize unbelievers are going to act like unbelievers. HOWEVER, there is a difference between being secular and being ANTI-CHRISTIAN." Former Boyzone star Shane Lynch recently accused Swift of implementing hidden satanic rituals in her sold-out shows. “I think when you're looking at a lot of the artists out there, a lot of their stage shows are satanic rituals live in front of 20,000 people without them realizing and recognizing,” Lynch told Ireland's Sunday World. During today's episode of Back Porch Theology, we're sitting down with an engaging joyful scholar - which may sound like a juxtaposition but shouldn't be - Dr. Trevin Wax. Trevin's an old friend who's got a long list of accomplishments including serving as a missionary in Romania, after which he went on to serve as the vice president of research and resource development at the North American Mission Board. He's taught courses at Wheaton College and Cedarville University and has lectured at the prestigious Oxford University in the UK. He's also the founding editor of The Gospel Project, published the Christian Standard Bible – which is one of my favorite translations - and has written a nightstand full of books. But what I appreciate most about Trevin is that he embodies the fact that being serious about matters of faith doesn't equate to being overly serious about oneself. As Christ followers, of course, we're called to marinate in God's Word like those ancient Berean Christians, but arrogance and academic elitism are not spiritual gifts! That being said, Dr. Wax is known for dropping wisdom bombs everywhere he goes, so you'll probably want to bring a notebook or journal along with your Bible to the porch today, plus something yummy and caffeinated like a non-fat mocha with whipped cream – I've never used thrill and orthodoxy in the same sentence but when I order a non-fat mocha with whipped cream I feel like those two juxtaposed terms enhance each other to the point of making my coffee almost Keto! We're going to have a great conversation today, y'all – thanks so much for choosing to hang out with us.
