What does Jerusalem represent in the Gospel of Luke? How does the journey to the cross shape our understanding of discipleship? At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus was attacked by an angry mob simply for speaking well of the enemies of his own people, and he later taught that God would bless us when people hated and mistreated us on his account. Elsewhere, the Scriptures guarantee that to be faithful to Jesus and to love those he loves will often put us at odds with others, and often with our own people. This week we will consider how Christians around the world and throughout history have experienced persecution and opposition not only for their faith in Jesus, but for their faithfulness to love the wrong people in his name, and we will seek God for courage and wisdom to embrace this same cost as part of our life with God.- Series Description -Jesus' greatest commandment is to love God and love neighbor. Paul, a famous church planter, simplifies it even more: love your neighbor as yourself. In a city like New Haven, there are many people to love. Some are lower on our list because some of us have to move in and past discomfort to love people God has placed nearby. Some are simply harder to reach. In this short series, we will look at what it means to neighbor New Haven. This will include an overview of the topic, a specific look at folks in the incarceration system, immigrants, and people others see as “wrong” to love. Multiple Sundays will have tangible ways of serving our neighbors that we can do during our worship service. If you want to grow in loving people in the new year, be a part of this series!
"The Cost of Following Jesus" is a study of Luke 9:57-62. Here we will discover the three essential attributes of discipleship, emphasizing sacrifice, prioritizing God's kingdom, and maintaining a continual focus on following Him.
Morning Sermon from 19 January
Continuing with our series called "The Servant King," (A Study of the Gospel of Mark).... In Mark 8:34-9:1, Jesus calls the crowd and His disciples to a deeper understanding of discipleship. He teaches that anyone who wishes to follow Him must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him, emphasizing that true life is found in self-sacrifice rather than seeking worldly gain. He warns that those who are ashamed of Him and His words will face shame when He returns in glory. Jesus also speaks about the cost of discipleship, stating that gaining the whole world is meaningless if it means losing one's soul. In the final verse, Mark 9:1, Jesus assures His followers that some standing there will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come with power. This likely refers to the upcoming transfiguration or the arrival of God's reign through Jesus' resurrection and the spread of the gospel. Luke Part 44: The cost of following JesusLuke 9:51-62Rev. Justin OlivettiMain idea: Grace is free, but a life in Jesus costs us
It is serious business to say you are a disciple of Jesus Christ. Jesus had high expectations for those who were his disciples because it's not just a transfer of knowledge but an intimacy of relationship; a life of personal surrender and sacrificial action. A person does not become a believer and then at some point down the road become a disciple of Christ. Discipleship is not a call to some higher level of being a Christian. It is being a Christian. The Bible makes no distinction between the two. Find out more in this episode of Gospel Wabi Sabi. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jeff-ebert/support

Have you ever had to make a life-changing decision that went against the advice of your loved ones? Join me, Stephanie, as I share my journey of leaving a career in law enforcement and choosing not to return to corporate America after a layoff, all in pursuit of following Jesus. Reflecting on Luke 15:25-27, we'll explore the emotional and relational costs of true discipleship and discuss why prioritizing our commitment to Christ over the approval of our family and friends is crucial, even when it leads to discomfort and tension. In the second half of the episode, we'll dive into 2 Timothy 1:7 and uncover the empowering truth that God has given us a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline, not fear. I'll share how this scripture has encouraged me to overcome my own fears and step out in faith. We'll talk about identifying and confronting the fears and challenges that hold us back, whether they lead to anxiety, depression, or physical health issues. Through personal insights and supportive coaching, I aim to inspire you to embrace the strength God provides and live your best life.Connect with Stephanie: Get a free resource The 4G Method Journal here. Jesus descends from the Transfiguration to a scene of chaos, where He heals a demon-possessed boy that His disciples couldn't cure, leaving the crowd in awe of His authority. As He predicts His impending betrayal, confusion and fear grip His disciples. An argument about greatness arises, and Jesus points to a child to teach the true nature of humility. Facing rejection from a Samaritan village, He then rebukes His disciples' desire for vengeance, emphasizing mercy over wrath. Along the journey, three individuals express a desire to follow Him, but Jesus starkly highlights the cost of discipleship. The Rev. Derek Waffel, pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church in Huntsville, AL, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Luke 9:37-62. The Gospel of Luke, filled with rich narratives and detailed accounts, offers an inspired and historical perspective on the life and teachings of Jesus. Emphasizing Jesus' concern for the poor, outcasts, and social justice, this Gospel narrates parables and miracles that underscore the theme of God's salvation for all people. Luke's account is unique in its inclusion of the birth of John the Baptist, the parable of the Good Samaritan, and the story of the Prodigal Son, culminating in a vivid portrayal of Jesus' death and resurrection, affirming the universal offer of redemption. This Gospel serves as an invitation to understand the depth of God's love and the breadth of His grace extended to humanity through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Pastor Charley Reeb will be preaching from Luke 14:25-33.

This week, we look at Matthew 8:18-22, the cost of following Jesus.
Our worship shows our whole-hearted commitment to follow Jesus.
Jesus's disciples continued to struggle to understand Jesus's talk of suffering. Again, they failed to understand the way of his kingdom. They were prepared to call down fire to destroy their enemies. But Jesus turned their attention to the price they would pay to be his true disciples. The hour had come for them all to go to Jerusalem and for Jesus to face the suffering that awaited him.

Teacher: Daniel Smith. This week, Daniel Smith presents us with a seemingly convicting question: is there anything we wouldn't joyfully lay down to follow Jesus? He delves into the narrative of the rich young ruler found in Mark 10:17-31—a story about a man who believed his good deeds made him "good" before God. However, Jesus didn't want his possessions or outward behavior; He wanted his heart. Daniel challenges us to fully surrender to Jesus, just as Jesus gave up all He had in heaven to become a servant on earth, fully surrendered to the Lord. Enjoyed the message?
