# Miracles Week 6: Embracing Faith and Bold Prayer In this week's sermon, we delve into the profound themes of faith and prayer, exploring how these elements are essential in experiencing God's miracles. The sermon draws heavily from the story found in **Mark 11**, where Jesus curses a fig tree and teaches his disciples about the power of faith-driven prayer. ## Key Scripture: **Mark 11:20-24** Jesus's interaction with the fig tree serves as a powerful illustration of faith and prayer. When Peter remarks on the withered tree, Jesus responds with, "Have faith in God." He emphasizes that faith, coupled with prayer, can move mountains, encouraging His followers to pray boldly and without doubt. ## The Power of Thin Places The sermon introduces the concept of "thin places," where the spiritual and material worlds meet, allowing us to experience God's power and grace. These are moments where the divine becomes tangible, and miracles occur. Understanding when and why God acts is crucial for believers who seek to witness His divine action consistently. ## **Faith and Prayer: The Keys to Divine Action** - **Faith in God**: Jesus teaches that unwavering faith is the foundation for experiencing miracles. It is not merely intellectual assent but an active, sometimes risky, trust in God's promises. Faith expresses itself through obedience, regardless of the circumstances.- **Bold Prayer**: The sermon challenges us to evaluate our prayer lives. Are our prayers safe and predictable, or do they reflect a boldness that trusts in God's ability to do the impossible? Jesus calls us to pray with the confidence that God hears and responds. ## Lessons from Joshua The sermon also references **Joshua 10**, where Joshua's bold prayer for the sun to stand still results in a miraculous victory for Israel. This story serves as an example of how faith and bold prayer can lead to divine intervention. ### Three Lessons from Joshua: 1. **Take God at His Word**: Joshua's faith was rooted in God's promise. Believers are encouraged to trust God's word and act upon it, knowing that He is faithful to fulfill His promises.2. **Ask Boldly**: Joshua's public prayer demonstrated his confidence in God. We are encouraged to pray boldly, trusting that God will act according to His will.3. **Confidence in Relationship with God**: Despite past failures, Joshua's relationship with God gave him the confidence to pray for the impossible. This underscores the importance of a right relationship with God, which is made possible through Jesus. ## Living Out Faith and Prayer The sermon concludes by urging believers to live out their faith actively and to pray with boldness. It challenges us to consider what bold prayers we need to pray and what risks we need to take in our faith journey. In closing, the message is clear: through faith and prayer, we can experience the miraculous power of God. As we step into "thin places," we witness His grace and are empowered to live for His glory.
In John 11, we read about the seventh and final sign that Jesus gives as a testament to who He is, aside from His own resurrection. Join us as Pastor Justin Carlton examines three lessons that we can learn from the resurrection of Lazarus.
John 3:27-28 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.” You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, “I am not the Christ,” but, “I have been sent ahead of Him.” Today, I want to encourage us with three lessons from John the Baptist. First, he wasn't building his ministry; he received his ministry from God. John knew who his source was. He had nothing that wasn't given to Him from God in heaven. That's not only a humble attitude, but it is the truth which gave John confidence and relieved him of the stress of striving to be successful and significant. Understanding this truth is foundational to living to love with Jesus. We aren't trying to be successful lovers of God and people. We expect Jesus to love through us, day by day, moment by moment, as we encounter people. In fact, we live for that reality. That's the fruit we display that glorifies the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ. So let's remember, we aren't building a ministry for the glory of God; we receive a ministry through His life in us, so the Father will be glorified in the Son. Second, John the Baptist knew who he wasn't and who he was. He wasn't the Christ, and he was the Messiah's forerunner. Here's the question for us. Do we know who we are not and who we are? For instance, do we know that we are not God and we are His creatures? Nothing comes from us. We are not the source nor the authority in our lives. We were made for Him. We are to be Christ-imagers. We are not life, but we are recipients of eternal life. Life is not about us. Life is about Jesus. Do you see what I mean? Do we know who we are not and who we are? Third, all believers are sent ahead of Jesus in the lives of those who will eventually follow Him. Yes, it is possible for God to draw someone to Christ without their having been influenced by a follower of Christ, but as a general rule, we make disciples of Christ by first building relationships with them. Just as John prepared the way for Christ in the lives of his followers, there will be people who are attracted to Christ in us who will, in a sense, follow us. They will first connect with us before connecting with Jesus, like John's followers connected with him before following Jesus. Who are your followers that you are pointing to Jesus? I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? I hope you will receive the joy and benefit of “giving it forward,” so others may receive encouragement to turn their hearts to God and to live to love with Jesus. Sun. December 22, 2024: "Three Lessons from the Visitation" -Deacon Kevin Welch
It takes grit for a history major to walk into a job fair for business students and convince the rep from Kraft Foods that she's the right person for the position. But that's exactly what our guest, Mindy Smith '13 did.Landing that job with Kraft spring-boarded Mindy into a marketing and sales career where she held positions with companies like Coke and now Shell. Currently, Mindy is a global strategy leader for Shell's Mobility business, and is responsible for brand standards at more than 47,000 retail sites worldwide.Mindy joins host Maya Pomroy '22 to chat about her career-defining pivots, the importance of being bold, critical insights she's learned at Shell and why she decided to get her MBA after an already successful career journey.Episode Guide:02:00 Career Beginnings and Early Jobs03:22 Landing a Job at Kraft Foods06:19 Insights from Working at Kraft15:11 Transition to Coke19:33 Joining Shell and Pursuing an MBA23:57 The Steamroller Persona24:54 Navigating Organizational Changes27:58 New Role at Shell29:00 Managing Global Insights31:09 Customer Experience and Competition35:45 Rice University's Lasting Impact41:58 Final Thoughts and LessonsOwl Have You Know is a production of Rice Business and is produced by University FM.Episode Quotes:Networking is about learning, not just opportunities35:31: Rice was such an important part of my life. And as I mentioned earlier, I still take a lot of the learnings and use them daily in my work. And one of the things that I really appreciated about Rice was going back to network, going back to hearing others' perspectives and how they handle things. And when I was there, I loved hearing from people who had already graduated…[38:07] One of the things I did throughout was connect with alumni whenever I had the opportunity at different events. And even now, I love to hear people's stories, and I like to hear what people do, and I like to hear, you know, quite honestly, they'll ask me questions sometimes that then get me thinking about things. And it's great to have that interaction. And, you know, people talk about network all the time in the sense of using your network if you're looking for a job or things like that. For me, it's really—it's the learning.Life isn't a straight line—embrace the curveballs41:44: Whether it's your life or your career, it's not a straight line, and you can't plan it out. I was just saying this to my sister-in-law: You can be the best planner. You can have every little detail planned out. Life is always going to throw you curveballs, and how you react to those curveballs—have the courage and overcome the fear—because some of those curveballs end up being amazing opportunities. Even though they might not have been in your original plans, that's definitely one. Number two would be to always be curious. One of the things that I think I have benefited from is that I'm not afraid to ask a lot of questions. Sometimes that can annoy people, or sometimes I do worry that if—especially if it's someone senior—they might see it as, you know, just, “Why is she asking so many questions?” But you know what? That's how you learn. Be curious, though, and learn new things. On the formula of success in a big company26:29: I've always had a formula. Even 20 years ago, when I had an actual office, I had on my board the formula for success in a big company: 60 percent your network, 20 percent actual work, and 20 percent perception. And I'll tell you, one of the things with what's been going on lately, I've been telling people I might change my formula to 50 percent network and 50 percent perception because, absolutely, in a time like this—where people who might not know you are making decisions about your future with the company—not only the network, but the perception, is big. So, more important than ever in times like this, it pays off.Show Links: TranscriptGuest Profiles:Mindy Smith | Rice Business

The challenges and struggles of being a godly husband are real. That's why it's important to seek help and encouragement every step of the way. Since its publication in 2011, The Meaning of Marriage by the late pastor and author Tim Keller has provided insight and guidance for men seeking to make their marriage all God wants it to be. Today, we discuss three key quotes from The Meaning of Marriage and some related Scripture verses that point us in the right direction as husbands and fathers. Unity, sacrifice, and love are three defining features of a godly marriage, and Keller's book gives us a good idea of what it looks like to become a husband that embodies those attributes. Join me as I share with you three things about being on solar that I did not realize I would experience as well as our usual Monday segments. Plenty of drinks on the shelves. The food coolers are mostly full too. Aldi was rather crowded. Stock levels looked good, and we found everything we wanted. Staple prices were: eggs: $2.78; whole milk: $2.86 (-); heavy cream: $5.19; OJ: $3.29; butter: $3.69; bacon: $4.25; potatoes: $3.99; sugar: $3.09; flour: $2.29; 80% lean ground beef: $4.59 (+). Home Depot has a lot of bulbs, vines, and onion starts in a row of islands in the front. The tool islands have lots of empty compartments. There are still specials going for Milwaukee 12V "Red Lithium" tools and batteries, with just a few of the Ryobi USB-charged tools left, and some 18V One+ items. Fire extinguishers area was full, including various smoke and CO alarms. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.38. Untainted regular has dropped a dime to $3.599/gallon. Frugality Tip from Margo without a t Ever tried a new recipe and it ended up not what you thought it was going to be? Don't throw it out, do something else with it. I recently tried a new humus recipe and it turned out like a soup. So I made some pasta, poured this roasted red pepper chickpea sauce on it, added some roasted tomatoes and a little homemade Italian salad dressing and boom, it is now a pretty darn good pasta salad. Maybe add some roasted chicken to it. The possibilities are endless... And now after writing this, I could have made a soup too. It can be frustrating to make something that doesn't turn out like you want, but to me it's more frustrating to throw good food away. Get creative, who knows you might accidentally make something you will make again one day. Operation Independence Avoiding the need to buy a new appliance through appliance repair Mechanical appliances and helpful video - NEED LINK FROM T - Sorry guys i will update it here when he sends it!! Main topic of the Show: 3 Lessons Learned after 1 Month of Solar Reference: HackMyHomestead.com Background on the solar system and how we sized it. How long it took for it to work right and barriers to functioning that we ran into. The lessons: Know Your Why, Don't Be Rosy Eyed About The Savings, Choose Wisely Sized based on budget for resilience Developed to be scalable as in we can add batteries and panels if we like Reputable companies for equipment means we got a free upgrade when a new model came out Installing solar into an existing home will teach you things about the wiring that you had no idea about. Found Bad Wiring Found Bad Grounding Needed to get some other things up to code for safety not just because of codes Access to the real time data helps you make wiser decisions Time of day to use water and why I have changed The clogged spin down filters Cloudy days make me even less happy than they used to Trimming Trees and the Big Picture Frosty mornings Snow and dust and panel cleaning Bonus observation: Knowing the why and how it fits into my long term energy resilience plan has really helped me embrace the system, learn more about solar, and not have dispatched expectations. Also, batteries are WAAAAAAAY more important than panels. You do get a tax credit FWIW. Make it a great week! Song: GUYS!
