The latest episode of Oncology On the Go focused on survivorship and supportive care. Stemming from conversations with leading clinicians in the field, the compilation highlights gaps and educational insights into multiple areas. How can clinicians work with supportive care specialists to ensure that patients are receiving all the help that they need? Denise Reynolds, RD, of Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute: 4:20-5:46: Some adverse effects (AEs) include severe nausea and vomiting. What nutritional strategies do you recommend to ensure adequate intake? 5:47-7:29: Taste and smell changes are common AEs. What advice do you give to patients to help cope and combat them? Adam Friedman, MD, FAAD, professor and chair of dermatology, director of the Residency Program, and director of translational research at George Washington Medical Faculty Associates in Washington, DC: 7:30-9:24: Your study found that a significant proportion of respondents, including those who have been previously treated for cancer, would decline anti-cancer therapies due to dermatologic AEs like hair loss. What are some crucial communication strategies oncologists should employ to address this? 9:25-11:37: What should all oncology clinicians know about how to manage mild to moderate dermatologic AEs? 11:38-24:54: Daniel C. McFarland, DO, the director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Wilmot Cancer Center; a medical oncologist who specializes in head, neck, and lung cancer; and the psycho-oncology editorial advisory board member for the journal ONCOLOGY®, spoke with different psycho-oncology colleagues regarding topics like body image, sexual health, and mortality. Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Ramona Wallace.
For many, integrative medicine has become an unattainable luxury, and healthy diet and lifestyle the prerogative of the privileged. Today's guest, Dr. Ramona Wallace, is attempting to change that. Trained conventionally as a DO, she undertook additional training and certification via the Institute for Functional Medicine to broaden her clinical skills. She practices primary care in an underserved community in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where she incorporates diet and lifestyle recommendations to address her patients' chronic conditions. Careful nutritional assessment has revealed that many of her patients, while overtly overweight, are decidedly malnourished. She has documented a wide range of deficiencies—of B vitamins, vitamins A, C, and D, critical minerals like zinc and magnesium, even full-blown scurvy. These are precisely the patients who are most likely to benefit from nutritional support. Discovering obstacles to compliance is a key element to effect their health transformations. Dr. Wallace believes that individualized care is the key to reversing long-standing health conditions. She mentors medical students in the first-of-its-kind Functional Medicine program at a medical school. She has also co-authored a landmark paper arguing for wellness self-care by doctors, to stave off burnout and to help them be better role models for patients.
And the real reason you're not getting clear advice about applying to residency. Listener Baffled J. Whoseadaddy (not his real name) asked us why his med school kids complain that the residency application process is confusing and “a black hole.” This week, hosts Dave Etler, Chase Larsson, Zach Grissom, and Madeline Ungs unpack why no one can seem to agree on what residency programs want… and what they actually do. Spoiler: it's not a first-author publication, committee position, or flawless grades. They're joined by recent Carver College of Medicine grad Dr. Teneme Konne, now a full-fledged family medicine attending (and “professional yapper”), who spills the truth on how programs really evaluate applicants. From what happens behind closed doors during interview debriefs to how introverts can still stand out, we break it all down. If you're sick of performative CV-building, tired of mixed signals (literally), and unsure how to be “authentic” without sounding like a TED Talk… this one's for you. Host Jeremy C. Park talks with cityCURRENT partner, John Lewis, CEO of Semmes Murphey Clinic, who highlights the independent, physician-owned brain and spine care practice founded in Memphis in 1912. The clinic is a global leader in neurosurgery and neurology, advancing the fields of spinal, cranial and endovascular treatments through cutting-edge research, groundbreaking surgical techniques, and a steadfast commitment to improving lives. During the interview, John shares some of the clinic's history, noting how Dr. Semmes was the first neurosurgeon in Memphis, and he trained directly under Dr. Harvey Cushing, who's considered the “father” of neurosurgery. He talks about the growth over the years and how today Semmes Murphey Clinic is a multi-faceted practice with more than 40 physicians, 3 neuropsychologists, and a full complement of physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and related medical staff who collectively treat everything from headaches to complex spinal deformity.John discusses how being independent of any hospital facility or other practice means their doctors see patients all across the Mid-South and shares some of the many different ways his team helps patients between a brain tumor surgery in a pediatric hospital, stroke intervention at an adult hospital, spine trauma surgery in an emergency room, elective spine surgery in their surgery center, a memory care assessment office visit, conservative care physical therapy in their clinic or an MRI in their imaging suite. John then talks about his team and the specialized training and education required in the field. He talks about some of the innovations, like minimally-invasive spine surgery, which is now considered standard practice, and how that was developed at Semmes Murphey Clinic in the 1990s. He also highlights some of their partnerships and how the clinic is further involved in the community, like as a founding partner in the Medical Education and Research Institute (MERI) and with their Residency Program at UT Health Sciences Center.John then talks about the importance of being proactive with our health because problems with the spine often show up looking like something else, and he shares his own story and testimonial as a patient. He wraps up highlighting the Brain and Spine Network, a Center of Excellence program that Semmes Murphey Clinic and Baptist Memorial Health Care, another cityCURRENT partner, have structured for employers as an employer-based offering. Companies that join the Brain and Spine network can offer their employees direct access to high quality, non-invasive care for acute back and neck problems. John wraps up talking about the many benefits of helping employees with issues like back pain and headaches and how taking a proactive approach leads to fewer missed workdays and higher levels of performance, productivity, and happiness.Visit https://www.semmes-murphey.com/citycu... to learn more about the Center of Excellence program or visit www.semmes-murphey.com to learn more about Semmes Murphey Clinic.
