Sin is like an infection. If it's not dealt with, it will only continue to grow and consume. Once we let sin in, its natural tendency is to spread. What starts as a small compromise leads to another larger one. Jesus breaks social norms and customs to seek out The Woman at the Well. Through this encounter, we discover the tender heart of God for people on the fringe of society. In this episode, we explore the chilling rise of King Ahab as recorded in 1 Kings 16:29–34, where he is introduced as the most wicked king in Israel's history up to that point. Ahab doesn't just walk in the sins of Jeroboam—he escalates them by marrying Jezebel, the Sidonian princess, and bringing full-blown Baal worship into the heart of Israel. His 22-year reign becomes a long, tragic demonstration of God's extraordinary patience in the face of deep national and spiritual compromise. We trace how Ahab's marriage to Jezebel essentially turns Israel into a colony of Sidon—not by war, but by religious infiltration. Ahab becomes a vice-regent of Baal in Samaria, building a temple for Baal and erecting an Asherah pole for his wife Jezebel. But even in this dark moment, God does not abandon His people. From there, we turn to John 4:19–26, where Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at the well. In a region shaped by the legacy of Ahab's idolatry, Jesus' prophetic yet compassionate interaction with the woman mirrors Elijah's call to the northern kingdom—and even more, reveals the heart of God: patient, personal, and persistent. Rather than condemn her, Jesus draws her back to the true King of Israel—Himself. This episode ends with a challenge: if God could show such patience with Ahab, and if Christ could show such grace to a Samaritan woman steeped in spiritual confusion, how much more should we model that patience in our relationships today? Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well and offers her “living water,” revealing Himself as the Messiah who gives eternal life. Despite cultural, ethnic, and moral barriers, Jesus meets her with truth and grace, exposing her sin while extending hope and transformation. Through their conversation, He teaches that true worship isn't about location or ritual but about worshiping the Father “in spirit and truth.” The woman's encounter with Jesus changes her life—she leaves her water jar, runs to tell her town, and many believe in Him because of her testimony. This story reveals Jesus as the source of new life, the revealer of true worship, and the Savior who seeks the lost and transforms hearts for God's glory.

Jesus shares the gospel, good news of a new king who saved not politically, but spiritually in a time of great diversity and divide. I personally like his approach. He is willing to, as they say, “mix it up” with this woman. He draws her in to the real issue and goes after what's holding her back. Her response is astounding. She's all in. This is the River Church. Mix it up, listen, talk, show respect, be concerned for others. And, that's a big and, lead people to Jesus through a life changing encounter with the truth of God's word. WOW. Bolder and equally truth filled.

Jesus meets a woman at a well; this event gets right to the point. Our lives are much more than what we see physically, and the real existential threat is not to our earthly lives, but to our eternal souls. So critical is this truth that Jesus brings up what the woman would not say. "Go, call your husband, and come here." What unfolded next led the woman to the spiritual. "The woman *said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet." Verse 19 of John 4. The point of this conversation:"Jesus *said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. 22 "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:17-20Our So What?Praying for the physical is part of the call we have, but as we mature in our communion with Almighty God, our concerns will move our focus from the physical to the spiritual."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." What are you turning to for fulfillment in life? How does it fall short? We see how Jesus offers "living water" that satisfies completely. And when we truly encounter Christ, our lives are transformed and we can't help but worship and share this hope with others.
Pastor Jim explores Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well in John 4, revealing worship as a response to encountering God in truth and spirit. Jim challenges listeners to see how true worship is more than ritual or location. It is a response to the presence of Jesus that transforms our identity, confronts sin with grace, and overflows into proclamation. The woman's story illustrates how our thirst for belonging, healing, and spiritual vitality is met in Christ alone. Whether we are skeptical, ashamed, or stuck in patterns of religious routine, Jesus invites us into a deeper, everyday rhythm of worship that flows through our entire lives.
Plans change; that might be a theme of this podcast, Jesus' conversations with people in the book of John. We want to explore possible applications. Today, being sincere is an import from Jesus and His conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria. When she answered, "I have no husband," she was not honest with Jesus. His answer, "you have well said" in the passage did several things, but for her it was shown, Jesus was the one with the answers, and for us it illustrates, we are not only honest with God. For a prayer life which glorifies God, and satisfies our souls, our sincerity with Him is our…Our So What?As we desire honesty from one another in conversation, God desires truth in our close communion with Him. (Even though we know He knows)True communion is sincere communion."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." We begin today with a prayer for our brothers and sisters in Russia and Ukraine. Most of all, a worldwide revival might even start there, in the midst of turmoil. The conversation in John 4 is as astonishing as our prayers. To the woman, a Jew talking to a Samaritan woman was unthinkable. The holy God of the universe initiating communion with us is just as inconceivable. Yet He does:Moses sees the burning bush; the Hebrews tell us He has spoken in various and sundry ways. At one point, all I knew of the Bible was Romans 6:23, from a billboard.Hebrews also tells us that now He is speaking to us through His son. "in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they." Hebrews 1:2-4And as Jesus is turning the woman from water to eternal life, He tells us in this passage: "…made purification of sins…" Eternity is His message. Our So What?We ask this question: Knowing that the spiritual is so much more critical than the physical. How might that change the content of our prayers? "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Along with being created to be in relationship with our Creator, we were also created to be in relationship with one another. Yet again, however, the rebellion of humanity against God's intentions has led us into places of deep isolation. This is especially true today, when loneliness is epidemic. In the famous story of the woman at the well, Jesus plows through social protocols to show love to an isolated Samaritan woman. Not only does he reconnect her with her community; he calls her to a greater purpose and reminds her of the dignity she has as a child of God. To those of us who are isolated, this story is a reminder that we, image-bearers of God, are more than worthy of love. To Grace Church as a whole, this story is an intense challenge to follow in Jesus' footsteps by calling out the image of God in others and drawing them out of isolation and into community.

The Woman at the Well Has a Name (John 4:4–15, 28–29) - Dr. Bill Cook
In John 4 we read about an encounter that Jesus had with a lady at a well in Samaria. Prior to this we learn that the religious elite wouldn't even enter into Samaria due to their prejudices. The question we must ask ourselves is, are my prejudices limited my ability to live holy and to offer hope to the world?
Marshall Segal | No sin is too great, no place is too far, and no wall is too high to keep us from receiving the living water of Jesus — if only we'll come to him.
