Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at a well and offers her “living water,” revealing Himself as the Messiah who gives eternal life. Despite cultural, ethnic, and moral barriers, Jesus meets her with truth and grace, exposing her sin while extending hope and transformation. Through their conversation, He teaches that true worship isn't about location or ritual but about worshiping the Father “in spirit and truth.” The woman's encounter with Jesus changes her life—she leaves her water jar, runs to tell her town, and many believe in Him because of her testimony. This story reveals Jesus as the source of new life, the revealer of true worship, and the Savior who seeks the lost and transforms hearts for God's glory.

Jesus shares the gospel, good news of a new king who saved not politically, but spiritually in a time of great diversity and divide. I personally like his approach. He is willing to, as they say, “mix it up” with this woman. He draws her in to the real issue and goes after what's holding her back. Her response is astounding. She's all in. This is the River Church. Mix it up, listen, talk, show respect, be concerned for others. And, that's a big and, lead people to Jesus through a life changing encounter with the truth of God's word. WOW. Bolder and equally truth filled.

In this article, we explore John 4 through the lens of Rabbinic Midrash and its links to Ezekiel 16 and 2 Kings 17. Is the Samaritan woman a creative representation of Ezekiel's prophetic narrative, and if so, how does this change the way we read the Gospels? Jesus meets a woman at a well; this event gets right to the point. Our lives are much more than what we see physically, and the real existential threat is not to our earthly lives, but to our eternal souls. So critical is this truth that Jesus brings up what the woman would not say. "Go, call your husband, and come here." What unfolded next led the woman to the spiritual. "The woman *said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet." Verse 19 of John 4. The point of this conversation:"Jesus *said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall you worship the Father. 22 "You worship that which you do not know; we worship that which we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:17-20Our So What?Praying for the physical is part of the call we have, but as we mature in our communion with Almighty God, our concerns will move our focus from the physical to the spiritual."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." What are you turning to for fulfillment in life? How does it fall short? We see how Jesus offers "living water" that satisfies completely. And when we truly encounter Christ, our lives are transformed and we can't help but worship and share this hope with others.
Pastor Jim explores Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well in John 4, revealing worship as a response to encountering God in truth and spirit. Jim challenges listeners to see how true worship is more than ritual or location. It is a response to the presence of Jesus that transforms our identity, confronts sin with grace, and overflows into proclamation. The woman's story illustrates how our thirst for belonging, healing, and spiritual vitality is met in Christ alone. Whether we are skeptical, ashamed, or stuck in patterns of religious routine, Jesus invites us into a deeper, everyday rhythm of worship that flows through our entire lives.
Plans change; that might be a theme of this podcast, Jesus' conversations with people in the book of John. We want to explore possible applications. Today, being sincere is an import from Jesus and His conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria. When she answered, "I have no husband," she was not honest with Jesus. His answer, "you have well said" in the passage did several things, but for her it was shown, Jesus was the one with the answers, and for us it illustrates, we are not only honest with God. For a prayer life which glorifies God, and satisfies our souls, our sincerity with Him is our…Our So What?As we desire honesty from one another in conversation, God desires truth in our close communion with Him. (Even though we know He knows)True communion is sincere communion."What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." We begin today with a prayer for our brothers and sisters in Russia and Ukraine. Most of all, a worldwide revival might even start there, in the midst of turmoil. The conversation in John 4 is as astonishing as our prayers. To the woman, a Jew talking to a Samaritan woman was unthinkable. The holy God of the universe initiating communion with us is just as inconceivable. Yet He does:Moses sees the burning bush; the Hebrews tell us He has spoken in various and sundry ways. At one point, all I knew of the Bible was Romans 6:23, from a billboard.Hebrews also tells us that now He is speaking to us through His son. "in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high; 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they." Hebrews 1:2-4And as Jesus is turning the woman from water to eternal life, He tells us in this passage: "…made purification of sins…" Eternity is His message. Our So What?We ask this question: Knowing that the spiritual is so much more critical than the physical. How might that change the content of our prayers? "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Come As You Are Series - The Samaritan Woman at the WellJohn 4:39-42 “Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”I like this verse because it shows how important it is that we talk about our faith and how much God is doing for us. The opening sentence in this verse says, “Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony.” What if she didn't tell anyone what had happened? What if she was too afraid of what others might think to talk about it? She was already an outcast because of her lifestyle. She had five different husbands over the years, and when she met Jesus, the man she was currently living with was not her husband. The reason she was getting water at the hottest time of day was that she was too ashamed to get water in the morning when the rest of the women got their water. She did not want to be the center of attention. She didn't want everyone looking at her, and yet she ran to town to tell everyone about Jesus. I wonder if all those people would have been saved if she had been too afraid to tell her story. If she was too afraid to share her excitement over Jesus and what He did for her. The reason I ask is that I sometimes feel afraid to share. Sometimes I get a prompting from the Holy Spirit to say something to someone, and all this fear and doubt go through my mind. I wonder what that person will think of me if I say it. I wonder if I will sound crazy or stupid. I wonder if they will even listen or if they will just walk away. I wonder if they will be mean. It sounds like this woman did not think about it at all. She had a conversation with Jesus and then ran right to town to tell everyone about it. I want her courage, her boldness, her humility. Or maybe her impulsiveness, if she ran off without even thinking about it. Maybe I need more of that when it comes to Jesus. Maybe I just need to act first and think later when it comes to following the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Have you ever wondered if something you say or do could have this effect on people? It can. It might have already. A lot of times, it is for us to plant the seeds but not to see the harvest. We have no idea how our words and actions can affect the course of someone's life. Sometimes we say something, and the person we say it to doesn't really think much of it, but then down the road, they see the significance of it. Think back to all the people who have been influential in your life. Did you know at the time they were going to be so influential? Did you know that the advice they gave you was going to shape the kind of person you would become? Are those people still alive? Could you tell them now how influential they were? They may not know.We don't usually see the good in us as much as others do. It is an interesting experiment to ask those who know you well to tell you what they see in you, what they feel your strengths are, and what your weaknesses are. I was reading a book titled “The Miracle Morning” and the author Hal Elrod suggested sending an email to those closest to you, this can include family, friends, and coworkers. He suggests you email them and ask them to tell you the top 2-3 areas of weakness you may have, and then also some areas of strength. He said it is a great way to see if you are living life intentionally and if you are giving off the vibe you want to give off. At the end of the book, he gave a sample email to send out. I think if you asked others how they see you, you would be surprised. They will see things in you to admire and look up to, and you may not see them. The verse ends by saying that although the people in the town started to believe in Jesus because of her words, now they believe because they heard Jesus for themselves. I love this part too because I feel it takes the pressure off of me. I just have to tell my story, I just have to talk about what Jesus has done for me, and hopefully that will be enough to lead people to find Jesus. It is not my responsibility to make them Christian, to save their soul, to teach them everything they need to know about Jesus. Jesus will do that. It is just my job to tell them about my encounter. If I tell people how God is working in my life, that will be enough to get them to seek God so they can find out more. I truly believe our stories are powerful enough to bring others to Christ, and this verse is a great witness to that. Sometimes we think our story is not big enough, interesting enough, or important enough to tell others. We feel we have lived a boring, normal life, and so others won't want to hear about it. This is a lie from the enemy. He knows how important our stories are, and he knows others need to hear them. There isn't a single person who gets through this life without hardships, without struggles. Maybe you feel your struggles are small compared to others, and yet someone else might be having the same struggle you had, and they feel like it is so overwhelming. God might be doing big, amazing things in your life, and that is awesome. Tell people about it. God might be doing small, almost unnoticeable things in your life, and that is amazing too; tell people about it. There are some people, a lot of people, who don't know God. They don't know that the reason everything went so well and things fell into place so nicely is because of God. However, if you tell them about the little ways you see God showing up in your life, they will start to see Him in their life as well. I know it is hard to speak up sometimes. I know this world doesn't seem to be super friendly to people who want to talk about Jesus. I know there are a million reasons we can come up with for why we shouldn't share our story. I know the enemy is whispering in your ear that you don't have anything to share. He is saying your life is too boring, and no one wants to hear about your life. I know all of that, and yet if you read this verse, hopefully you can see the importance of sharing your story anyway. What if your story was the story someone needs to hear today to find Jesus, or to come back to Jesus? Can we join together and be brave enough to share our story so that we can bring others to know Jesus? Can we do that for God? If you feel like you are not brave enough, I know I am not some days, then ask God for help. He gives us what we ask for, especially if we are asking for things that will help us build up the kingdom of God. How is God working in your life, and who can you talk to about it today?Another thing I thought of when I was thinking about this story is the fact that Jesus chose this particular woman to reveal his identity to. She was a Samaritan, and Jews were not supposed to associate with Samaritans. She was a woman, and men weren't supposed to talk with women they didn't know. Yet God chose this Samaritan woman to be the first person to whom He revealed his true identity. God chose her, and He is choosing you, too!God has a purpose for each one of us. I was going to say, “If God wants to use you, He will.” However, I don't believe it is a matter of “if”. God definitely wants to use you; He wants to use all of us to help Him build up His Kingdom. Whatever you feel God putting on your heart, know that He chose you for a reason. Maybe that thing you feel is a weakness is the exact reason God chose you. Maybe he is going to use that weakness to help you talk to others with that same weakness? Maybe your addiction to alcohol makes you perfectly suited to bring his good news to others with an addiction to alcohol. God will use all our mistakes, all of our pain, all of our sins, for good if we let Him. Don't listen to that inner voice that tells you God wouldn't use you. That is the voice of the enemy trying to keep you down because he knows God has powerful plans for you, and the enemy is worried about what will happen if you step into those plans. God knows you are not perfect, and that is exactly why He wants to use you. Let Him. Say Yes. Surrender to God, and He will use you. You are exactly who He wants. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Please help us see how you are working in our lives. Please open our eyes to all you do for us and help give us the boldness to share it. Dad, we are asking you to help us spread our story to all those we meet so they can start to see you working in their lives. We ask that you help us not to believe the enemy's lies that our story is boring or that we don't have anything to say. We love you, Lord, you are working in our lives, and we want to share that with others. We just need your help to do that. Thank you, Lord! We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Just two more weeks to sign up for retreat. Along with being created to be in relationship with our Creator, we were also created to be in relationship with one another. Yet again, however, the rebellion of humanity against God's intentions has led us into places of deep isolation. This is especially true today, when loneliness is epidemic. In the famous story of the woman at the well, Jesus plows through social protocols to show love to an isolated Samaritan woman. Not only does he reconnect her with her community; he calls her to a greater purpose and reminds her of the dignity she has as a child of God. To those of us who are isolated, this story is a reminder that we, image-bearers of God, are more than worthy of love. To Grace Church as a whole, this story is an intense challenge to follow in Jesus' footsteps by calling out the image of God in others and drawing them out of isolation and into community.

In John 4 we read about an encounter that Jesus had with a lady at a well in Samaria. Prior to this we learn that the religious elite wouldn't even enter into Samaria due to their prejudices. The question we must ask ourselves is, are my prejudices limited my ability to live holy and to offer hope to the world?

from John 4:1-30, 39-42 Paul Tripp says, “the Bible isn't a book of heroes. No, it's the story of One Hero. Everyone else was flawed and needy, only made usable and strong by the grace and power of God.” For these nine weeks we will be invited into the lives of those, who by grace … Continue reading "(August 10, 2025) “Ordinary Heroes: The Woman at the Well”"

In the olden days, driving out to the Boise National Forest, and coming home from the same, God talked to me first. It was a hard truth that I had no comprehension of until I unexpectedly found myself in church. God spoke through a billboard containing His word. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."Romans 6:23God often speaks to us with a hard statement. Romans 6:23 is one of those. For the woman at the well, the hard conversation began with "Give me a drink."The astonishing part was not a command from a strange man, "give me a drink", but that a Jew was talking to a Samaritan,We are dumbfounded to hear from God, not just difficult truths, but that the Holy God of the universe stoops down to converse with His fallen creatures. "When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; 4 What is man, that Thou dost take thought of him? And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him?" Psalm 8:3-4Our So What?Viva la our astonishing conversations. For with out those troublesome statements, we would never know we need and have been given a Savior for our souls. "What a man is on his knees before God, that he is and nothing more." Finding Jesus in Unexpected Places // Finding –The Samaritan Woman at the Well John 4:1-42 (NIV)“Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he. Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?” Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their way toward him. Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?” “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.Don't you have a saying, ‘It's still four months until harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps' is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.” Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”Deuteronomy 25:5 (NIV)“If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.” Mark 12:18-23 (NIV)“Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?” John 4:27 (NIV)“Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?” John 4:27 (MSG)“Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked. They couldn't believe he was talking with that kind of a woman. No one said what they were all thinking, but their faces showed it.” Jesus not only walked through cultural barriers, but he also walked through racial barriers. Jesus not only walked through cultural barriers and racial barriers, but he also walked through religious/traditional barriers. John 4:20-24 (NIV)“Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Jesus brings the focus from the practice to the purpose. John 4:10-14 (NIV)“Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” She said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?” Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” Revelation 22:17 (NASB)“Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take the water of life without cost.”
