Movie Meltdown - Episode 531 When a certain co-host that hadn't seen "The Rise of Skywalker" finally sits down and watches it… well, it opens up a whole new can of sandworms. So listen as we dig into J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson and the overall arc of the most recent trilogy. Along the way, we get some opinions that you may not have heard on this show before - and before we're done, we look to the future of the franchise. And while we ourselves get “the toy box feeling”, we also bring up… Knives Out, the Star Trek Encyclopedia, The Mandalorian, he is an absolutely unique presence, Justin Lin, the wolfman having a drink, Super 8, none of this has to be an obstacle to having a good time at the movies, I’m going to let them do the writing for me, it’s like pure unadulterated fun, a marketing tool is a writing technique, Daisy Ridley, realizing a property for its fans, the most to do… out of any of the movies, Tales of the Bounty Hunters, nobody had done it that way before, Star Wars wish-fulfillment, it ticks these boxes and pushes these buttons, working-class sci-fi, Jon Favreau, perfectly relatable, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, how do we keep this franchise rollin’, William Shatner, let me tell you about a mystery box, when they were making the expanded universe, maybe his greatest accomplishment and frog nuns.  "The plot of the film is itself - is an excuse for the film to happen.”

David discusses how his television writing helps address the challenges of writing Star Trek fiction, and gives a shout-out to Star Trek Encyclopedia authors Mike and Denise Okuda, revels in time spent on the Stargazer, reveals the boundaries of canonical constrictions and mildly non-canonical inventions, delights in inventing back story for established canon, and discovers how this new backstory enriches the storylines we already know. One of the coolest ideas in Star Trek Timelines is the ability to have any single member of the Star Trek Universe as part of your crew. We are talking ANY character from any series, ship, timeline, universe, etc. That got us thinking. Who would WE pick for our ULTIMATE Crew? We break down all the main crew assignments in this "infinite possibilities episode". Heck, even waste extraction is discussed because Bill thinks that would be perfect for Dan! In Star Trek news, perhaps one of the most EPIC and awkward pics in history was taken recently at Star Trek Destination Europe as almost two dozen Star Trek alums got together on the bridge of the Enterprise! Also, time to fork over some quatloos or gold pressed latinum because the revised and expanded Star Trek Encyclopedia is now available and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive! Finally, both Bill and Dan received some swag in the mail over the weekend. What did they get and who is more excited? It's Episode 80 of Trek Geeks--beam aboard, won't you? STAR TREK TIMELINES Special thanks to our friends at Disruptor Beam--the creators of the Star Trek Timelines game--for letting us use their artwork in our album cover this week! SPECIAL THANKS We can't thank FIVE YEAR MISSION enough. We are truly grateful to them for allowing us to use their music for every episode of Trek Geeks. You really should check them out--they're writing and recording one original song for each episode of  the classic Star Trek series from the 1960's. Devil's Due. We've all heard the expression “selling your soul to the Devil.” The people of Ventax II took this perhaps a bit too literally when nature started getting restless and a con-artist with a claim to the planet showed up. Who can save the day? Well, Kirk, of course. We mean Picard. This is a TNG episode, after all. Only it isn't. In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Daniel Proulx, Jarrah Hodge, and Zachary Fruhling to discuss all things Ardra, how the script for “Devil's Due” was repurposed for TNG from the aborted Phase II series, how societies fall into apocalyptic thinking, whether Picard's role would have worked better with Kirk, and much more.
