[Picard review starts at 16:51 / Discovery review starts at 46:46] Tony and Laurie start off the week's news with the Strange New Worlds teaser trailer, covering what both is—and isn't—in it. They give the latest update on Paramount+'s plans to be the exclusive home of Star Trek and talk about Mike and Denise Okuda winning a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Art Directors Guild. They dig into Tony's recent interview with Picard co-showrunner Terry Matalas, give intel on the show's ships from production designer Dave Blass, discuss the recent wrap of season 3 (and likely the series as a whole), plus look at new hints about the rest of season 2 from the latest promos. After that, they review Picard episode 201, “Penance,” then segue into reviewing Discovery‘s penultimate episode of season 4, “Species 10-C,” then speculate briefly on what might happen in next week's season finale.

[Discovery review starts at 25:08] Tony and Laurie start with the good news that Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be debuting in multiple international markets this week, despite last week's removal of the series from Netflix overseas. Then they celebrate the confirmation that Whoopi Goldberg will definitely be on Picard season 2 as Guinan, thanks to a Cameo video made by Michelle Hurd (Raffi). They talk about Mike and Denise Okuda being honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, what to expect from the upcoming 4K Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and what's happening with a newly funded Star Trek theme park. They wrap things up with a look at interviews both new and old about Star Trek: First Contact on its 25th anniversary, and a custom-made Starbucks cup with a classic Janeway coffee quote.

And of course, they cover Season 4, Episode 1 of Star Trek Discovery, "Kobayashi Maru." This week on Episode 526 of Priority One: the Next Generation of tours is in full swing at Ticonderoga, set photos from Picard Season 3, Star Trek Online gets spoOoOoOoky in their first Halloween special, and we review the latest episode of Lower Decks: "wej Duj"! TREK IT OUT Edited by Thomas Reynolds Touring the Next Generation in Ticonderoga By Elio Lleo Over the years, we've had the privilege of attending some phenomenal Star Trek themed events and exhibits [or seething with jealousy at it–Ed.], but few are as spectacular as what you'll find in the sleepy town of Ticonderoga, New York. You see, James Cawley–who grew to fame as an Elvis impersonator–is also a die-hard Trekkie. His passion was so great that he decided to rebuild the sets for The Original Series where an old retail store used to be. He didn't just want to build the Enterprise…he wanted to recreate the old Desilu Set. Closest we'll probably come to having a religious experience. Image: Star Trek Set Tours. Now, after 4 years of being open to the public, Cawley is expanding! As they work to acquire an adjacent building, Cawley and his team have begun diligently recreating the sets from The Next Generation. Local news station WCAX got a sneak peak of their progress: when speaking to reporter Cat Viglienzoni, Cawley explains he has all the original blueprints as well as a direct line to Star Trek's legendary creators Mike and Denise Okuda. Star Trek: Picard Producer's Sweet Sneak Peek Pics By Cat Hough If you've been following Star Trek: Picard executive producer and co-showrunner, Terry Matalas on Twitter, then you've seen the images he's been sharing from the set of the show. If you are not following him, then you may want to. Since Season 2 has wrapped filming, the images he posted are likely sneak peaks from season three–either way, they are definitely interesting. https://twitter.com/TerryMatalas/status/1442660363573465090?s=20 The images are all from what appears to be a Starfleet vessel from the late 24th century: the first image features the helm console for the ship, with Matalas noting the LCARS interface introduced on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Also of particular interest: the replicator display and table setting that includes a 24th-century Starfleet emblem and some new sci-fi cutlery. We still don't know what the second season holds, but we have been told that the Q storyline will wrap up in Season 2. It's also very likely that Jonathan Frakes will return to direct some episodes of Season 3. https://twitter.com/TerryMatalas/status/1445033217875070977?s=20 Episodic Season Habit (It Becomes Automatic) By Cat Hough Anson Mount recently spoke about Strange New Worlds, echoing Akiva Goldsman's description of the show: “we wanted our show to be more or less a throwback in every way we could... which meant more of an episodic structure. And so every episode is a distinct story...but the star of the show is the ship and the big idea of the week.” Bridge to Astrocartography, figure out why we keep getting lost in those eyes. Image: TrekMovie.com As we've also discussed on prior episodes, filming for Strange New Worlds was done using Augmented Reality and Mount also spoke about that experience, saying, “It's wild, man. Imagine an entire soundstage where the walls are all high-definition screens and there's a ceiling projection...it's really interesting to be in these environments because it's a whole other level of filmmaking than I've ever seen before.” A release date for Strange New Worlds has not been announced, yet. A big thanks to TrekMovie for sharing this exclusive interview from their coverage of Star Trek Day. Quick News Roundup Here are a few headlines that we didn't discuss but might interest you. In book news, the first novel in the Star Trek: Coda series has been released. This trilogy continues the adventures of characters from The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. The three books in the trilogy are Moments Asunder by Dayton Ward, The Ashes of Tomorrow by James Swallow, and Oblivion's Gate by David Mack. Moments Asunder is already available, with the two sequels following in October and November. The pre-order pages include synopses for the books, revealing a plot dealing in time travel. Plus, we got another glimpse at the upcoming Prodigy animated series. Nickelodeon recently tweeted a new trailer with the announcement that the show premieres on October 28. Finally, are you ready to take flight on a midlife crisis of cosmic proportions? Then you should definitely trek out the series idea from the creators of Saturday Night Live. This new show would be titled “Star Trek: Ego Quest,” following the voyages of the SS New Shepard and its crew of random weirdos. Its mission: to just...sort of fly around space goofing off in a ship that looks like a penis. https://youtu.be/XD66suMp3J4 STAR TREK GAMING NEWS Edited by Thomas Reynolds By the Spiking of My DPS, Something Wicked This Way Leaps By Rosco McQueen Replicate yourself a pumpkin spice raktajino and prepare to carve out a new experience in Star Trek Online: the MMO announced this week it will hold its first ever Halloween event! “Captains will find themselves transported to an ancient castle on Pyris VII. The classic aliens from the Original Series episode ‘Catspaw', the Old Ones, have returned once again to study humanity–but their plans have been disrupted by the Devidians!” Honestly the idea of redoing "Knowledge is Power" is scarier. Image: Cryptic Studios. The three week event will be a single activity, where playing the event TFO “Cat's Tale!” every 20 hours rewards you with the usual one daily progress token. After 14 days of progress you unlock the event rewards: the Transmuter Wand Universal Kit Module, the Old One Vanity Pet, with the first character receiving 25,000 Dilithium Ore, and 3 Featured Episode Reward Boxes. The Universal Kit Module - Transmuter Wand will transform your target into a sentient black cat, complete with Bad Luck Aura! The aura disables shields and most powers to nearby allies, who will flee in fear from the frightful feline. What every kid wants this Halloween, a subspace bubble wand. Image: Cryptic Studios. The event will be available on all platforms on October 13. An interesting note is that this will become a regular annual event, similar to First Contact Day. The article notes it begins with the one TFO, with plans to grow the event year-on-year with more content.

In December 2016, CBS Video released the Roddenberry Vault. It is a DVD collection of never-before-seen footage from the production of Star Trek. 70s Trek co-hosts Bob Turner and Kelly Casto discuss some of the highlights from this set. Fans thought they's seen everything there was to be seen about the original series. But in 2007, Mike and Denise Okuda were asked to catalog a large collection of film canisters by Rod Roddenberry, Gene's son. It turned out that these canisters contained hundreds of hours of lost Star Trek footage! This footage included deleted scenes, omitted dialogue and alternate takes. Viewers get a sense of what was happening behind the scenes. There is also evidence of how some episodes evolved, even as late as when the script was being shot on the stage. One of the more touching scenes is from the episode The City on the Edge of Forever. Fans will remember the scene between Kirk and Edith Keeler on the stairs. This collection reveals omitted dialogue from that scene that showed the depth of their growing relationship. It also showed off the acting power of William Shatner and Joan Collins. Even the most casual fan will find this collection worth the price!

TNG Films Face-off. When the the Original Series cast set foot on the big screen, it was a dream come true for a generation of fans who had supported the short-lived show through the dark 1970s. For fans of The Next Generation, however, the experience was quite different. As soon as the final episode wrapped, the cast jumped right into shooting their first movie. The result was a film that felt more like the next TV episode than a major motion picture. Or did it? In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Phillip Gilfus and Daniel Proulx of Earl Grey to pit the four Next Generation films against one another. We cover the good and the bad of each and discuss whether more time between the television series and the movies would have changed fan perception of these four stories. In our news segment we discuss the controversy surrounding the sixth-season TNG episode "Timescape" and an uncorrected VFX mistake, Dayton Ward's selection of ten Star Trek episodes that could work as stage plays, and the launch of Star Trek: Axanar's official podcast, which will chronicle the production of the independent film through discussions with the cast and crew. Mike and Denise Okuda speak out on Blu-ray FX mistake The attention to detail practiced by the creative team behind Star Trek: The Next Generation was incredible, particularly when it was assumed that this detail would never be seen. The HD remastering has brought out the finer points of the 24th century as well as the opportunity to "fix" problems that fans have pointed out for years. Most visual FX oddities have been corrected, but some fans are still not satisfied. See comparisons and the "Timescape" controversy on TrekCore. http://trekcore.com/blog/2014/06/okudas-comment-on-timescape-blu-ray-fx-error/
Star Trek: The Compendium to combine both J.J. films plus bonus features When Paramount released Star Trek Into Darkness on home video, the fanfare that the studio had hoped for was replaced by outrage. For those who enjoy bonus features—one of the key reasons to buy Blu-rays—there was no way to get all of the content that was produced. By splitting up the bonus content amongst various retail outlets, Paramount angered fans and shot themselves in the foot. Finally our voices have been heard and a new collection coming in September will bring both Abramsverse films and all existing special features into one box. A rebate offer is even in the works. Find out more about what's included on the discs. The Okudas talk Orci as director, Netflix, and the future of Star Trek Few people have had more influence over the look and feel of Star Trek over the years than Mike and Denise Okuda. Dare we say no one knows more about Star Trek than they do. Having worked on every modern Star Trek series and the (non-Abramsverse) films, Mike and Denise have a unique perspective on where Star Trek has been and where it is going. In a new interview with TrekMovie.com, the Trek dream team share their thought on Robert Orci directing, the rumors of a Star Trek series on Netflix, and where they would take the franchise themselves. Read the full interview on TrekMovie.com.

Avatar, Book Two. S.D. Perry set up the continuation of Deep Space Nine beautifully in the first part of the Avatar duology, but the real payoff comes in book two. On the final pages of the first half we were left with a cliffhanger that threatened to renew hostilities between the Federation and the Dominion. In this episode of Literary Treks we conclude our look at the start of Pocket Books' relaunch of DS9 and how S.D. Perry may have not only captured the pure essence of Deep Space Nine but actually elevated it. In our news segment we look inside Mike and Denise Okuda's new book On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise, get an update on Willain Leisner's upcoming TOS novel The Shocks of Adversity, learn how to speak Klingon, and check in on the release schedule for IDW's Star Trek Ongoing #19 and the Ongoing Volume 4 omnibus.
Waltz. From the beginning of Deep Space Nine, the futures of Sisko and Dukat were intertwined. Beginning as a standoff between two commanding officers on different sides of a conflict, this dance evolved into a standoff between two sides in a spiritual endgame. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Gwen Maddison and Ben McCormick to discuss the story that set Sisko and Dukat off on their final journeys to the Fire Caves. We also debate whether or not the Federation failed Dukat and if he is truly evil, as Sisko maintains. In news we cover the fluctuating price of TNG Season 2 on Blu-ray, familiar faces on Broadway, QMX's new Communicator badge, updates to CBS's PADD app for iOS, a new Enterprise-D book from Mike and Denise Okuda, and lots of talk about the Star Trek Into Darkness teaser trailer.
Deep Space Nine. As The Next Generation began to approach the finish line and with fan support at an all-time high, Paramount knew that they needed to pass the television torch to another crew. In doing so they created a different kind of Trek that was embraced by many fans and shunned by others. In the episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Brian Finifter of Down In Front to take a look at DS9, how the series departed from the classic Star Trek mould, and how it enriched the franchise by telling stories and developing characters in a way we had never seen before. In our news segment we discuss Mila Kunis's love of Star Trek, take a look at a lost Larry Nemecek interview with Ira Steven Behr, hear what Mike and Denise Okuda have to say about their role in the new browser-based game Infinite Space, open our ears to a limited-edition collection of unreleased music from TNG, find out what is lined up for the Shore Leave con in Baltimore, look at a Kirk maquette, find out why Pegg is asking for patience on the Star Trek sequel, examine a new technology that may be the first replicator, and play with the new CBS Interactive PADD application for iPad.
