Vandalism at draft board offices as U.S. involvement in Vietnam was escalating was deeply divisive. Opponents of the war were stereotyped as dirty hippies and sanctimonious white college kids, but the anti-Vietnam-war movement in the U.S. was really broad.

12 years ago, the property that inspired ‘Star Wars' and ‘Avatar' bombed — and now both those franchises are in the Disney family. It was released in the United States by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on March 9, 2012, marking the centennial of the titular character's first appearance. It was presented in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D formats. It received mixed reviews, with praise for its visuals, Giacchino's score, and the action sequences, but criticism of the characterization and plot. It failed at the North American box office, but set an opening-day record in Russia. It grossed $284 million at the worldwide box office, resulting in a $200 million writedown for Disney, becoming one of the biggest box office bombs in history and also becoming the film with the largest estimated box-office loss adjusted for inflation ever, losing $149–265 million. With a total cost of $350 million, including an estimated production budget of $263 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. Due to its box office performance, Disney cancelled plans for Gods of Mars and Warlord of Mars, the rest of the trilogy Stanton had planned. Much of the film's failure has been attributed to its promotion, which has been called "one of the worst marketing campaigns in movie history".John CarterWhen Civil War veteran John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) mysteriously awakes on the surface of Mars -- also called Barsoom -- he little expects the adventure that awaits him. Carter reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict among the red planet's inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). As Barsoom is poised on the brink of collapse, war-weary Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that everyone's fate is in his hands.

Remarkable Marketing
Pixar's Up: Show, Don't Tell Your B2B Marketing Message

Remarkable Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2023 28:11

So many marketers use dialogue as a crutch. They spell out what their product is, how their audience could benefit from it, and wrap things up with a run-of-the-mill CTA.But you don't need dialogue to make a powerful B2B marketing campaign. In fact, you might not need words at all. This week, we're looking at the iconic opening montage from Pixar's “Up.” The “Married Life” scene tells the story of the film's main character, Carl's marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Ellie. We follow them from youth to old age – and Ellie's death. These moments have no dialogue, instead letting the music, color, and shape tell Carl's backstory. The animators didn't tell us about Carl's life – they showed it to us. The result? Perhaps the most iconic scene in Pixar's storied history – and that's no easy feat. And we think your B2B marketing can leverage these same techniques to communicate your message so much more effectively than a voiceover ever could.About Pixar's “Up”“Up” is a 2009 animated movie by Pixar. It was directed by Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson, who also wrote the story along with Tom McCarthy. The original score is by Michael Giacchino.“Up” follows 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen as he rigs up his house with balloons in an attempt to fly to Paradise Falls and fulfill a promise to his late wife. He is joined by Russell, an 8-year-old Junior Wilderness Explorer, who has stowed away by clinging to the porch as the house lifted off its foundation. Together, they navigate the treacherous journey to the falls. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Pixar's “Up”: Let music do the emotional heavy lifting. The “Married Life” montage tells the story of Carl's marriage to Ellie. Though the two tragically discover they can't have children, they find hope in their childhood promise of trekking across the world to Paradise falls. The scene ends with Ellie's funeral – and the promise left unfulfilled. These emotional moments are even more powerful because of composer Michael Giacchino's score. In an interview, Giacchino said that the “Married Life” montage was the most difficult scene to write for. In order to make the scenes most effective, he wrote simple music for the scenes – or even opted not to score some of the most emotional moments. This restraint gave the scenes a gentle, melancholic feel, rather than a melodramatic one.Tell a story with color and shape. Whether they know it or not, viewers use basic visual cues to put together and understand a scene nearly instantaneously. So much of a scene can be told through these basic visual cues like color, and shape. In “Up”, each character is designed around a shape and color that conveys something about their personalities. Carl is blue and a square, Ellie is pink and a circle, and Russell is yellow and egg-shaped. The animators also adjusted the color palettes for scenes based on their emotional content: they used saturated colors in joyful scenes and drab colors in sad scenes. These visual cues may seem basic, but the connotations of specific colors and shapes will create instant context for your ad's viewers.Focus on facial expressions and body language. We don't just communicate with our words. The “Married Life” montage uses body language to show Carl and Ellie's feelings towards each other. When Ellie points at a cloud, we see Carl's blissful expression. We watch Ellie flinch as Carl smashes their savings jar again, telling us everything we need to know about how Ellie feels at that moment. Through intentional camera composition, editing, and directing, you can communicate a story with no words at all.Key Quotes*”By showing, not telling, especially in this example, it forces you to fill in the blanks with words that you understand or emotions that you can connect with.” - Dane Eckerle*”When you show a story without any V.O., we have no idea where we're going. So each thing happens sequentially and it builds on itself. You don't know where it's going. But by the end of it, you totally get it.” - Ian Faison*”If you go on TikTok, they're telling, not showing at all. There's someone speaking to you, there's captions, there's big text on the screen and you're seeing and hearing everything [being] spoon fed to the point where now, moments like this land that much harder, because I'm not used to using my imagination as much. This technique will work better now than it would've 15 years ago because people are so used to being spoon fed stuff. So it's all the more relevant today.” - Dane Eckerle*”It comes down to B2B companies seeing their audience as people first and not just other businesses. You are talking to people who have real needs and different personas and different target audiences.” - Anagha Das*”You're marketing a journey. So as a marketer, take a snapshot of your target customer at the midpoint of their journey, and then show the story of their journey.” - Ian FaisonTime Stamps[2:12] Tell me more about Pixar's "Up"[5:35] How did Pixar get audience buy-in within the first few minutes?[10:37] How did composer Michael Giacchino craft music to tell a story?[13:07] How did the storyboard artists use color and composition to convey meaning?[14:55] Why is showing-not-telling more powerful today than ever?[16:45] Examples of show-don't-tell in marketing[19:27] How do I market a customer journey?LinksWatch Pixar's UpLearn more about how Michael Giacchino wrote the scoreHow did Pixar design the characters?See how Apple used show-don't-tell in their accessibility campaignAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. NOTE: This episode contains spoilers. We are back from a short break, as we've been working on a couple of very big episodes. But in the meantime, we had the privilege to speak with Michael Giacchino, the director of Marvel's “Werewolf by Night,” a super fun and spooky “television special” on Disney+, perfect for this Halloween season. Joining us for the discussion is much of his post-production team: Re-recording Mixer Juan Peralta, Editor Jeff Ford, Supervising Sound Editor Josh Gold, and Dialogue and ADR Supervisor Chris Gridley. Maybe it's because Giacchino, one of Hollywood's top film composers, is usually a member of the post team, but his rapport with his crew is apparent in this lively discussion. Clearly this team had a blast working together and that infectious spirit continues here. We discuss the challenges of making a modern Marvel film in a Classic Hollywood “creature feature” style, the directorial advantages of being your own composer, that wild flame-throwing tuba, and so much more. “I even had some music that I had written that was going to be in the movie itself, thematically. And so I could play that for the actors and just have the sense of tone — so they'd get it immediately. It's something weird about music, the moment you hear it, it puts you in a place, you know? And so it was nice to have that. So that helped me figure out tones on set the entire shoot, for it was always in my head.” — Michael Giacchino, Director, Marvel's “Werewolf by Night” Very special thanks to our friends at Disney, Marvel, and especially https://www.skysound.com/ (Skywalker Sound), who were instrumental in pulling this conversation together for us. We promised on the last episode that we would return from the Fantastic Fest film festival with some seriously cool filmmaker conversations, but we had no idea we would come back with these two rad discussions. We're thrilled to have Michael Giacchino and Andy Park on the show this week, chatting about their Marvel Studios experiences and how they're transforming their childhood comic book obsessions into a live-action reality. These two geeks have done so much good for their nerd community. Up first, we chat with director/composer Michael Giacchino about Werewolf by Night, the first-ever Marvel Studios "Special Presentation," set to air on Disney+ this Friday (10/7). We were lucky enough to catch the Werewolf by Night Fantastic Fest Secret Screening, and we're delighted to report that the film is spooktacular. While it feels and looks unlike any other entry in the franchise, Werewolf by Night contributes tremendously to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Giacchino tells us about his earliest experiences with the Werewolf by Night comic books and how his passion for them extends from his passion for Universal monster and Hammer horror movies. These influences are readily apparent in his adaptation, shot lovingly in black and white, and performed by incredible actors (Gael García Bernal, Laura Donnelly) who are locked into a similar, nostalgic spirit. In the episode's second half, we speak with Andy Park, Marvel Studios' Director of Visual Development. Our first encounter with the MCU's live-action characters frequently occurs through his artwork. Neither of us will forget the first time we saw Park's concept art for Captain Marvel projected in Hall H, and we're still reeling from how his Thunderbolts piece roared through the D23 Hall in Anaheim. Park discusses the challenges of adaptation, knowing when to deviate from comic book designs and when to adhere to them strictly. As a massive fan of these characters and as a comic book artist himself, Park strives to replicate the look and tone of these iconic costumes. This passion is most notable when explaining why the Scarlet Witch had to have a proper, physical crown, not a CGI halo. If Marvel was gonna go full Witch, they had to go full witch, right? Be sure to follow Andy Park on Twitter, Instagram, and his Website. Let Michael Giacchino know how much you love Werewolf by Night this weekend via his Twitter, Instagram, and Website.

A signal cuts through the misty skyline of the decrepit Gotham City; the light in the darkness. The Caped Crusader. The World's Greatest Detective. Bats. In this week's episode of the Layered Butter Podcast; Raf, Rod and Jordan are whisked away to spoiler territory as they dive deep into the latest vision of the iconic Dark Knight; Matt Reeves' The Batman. From the heavy echoes of his boots across the rain soaked pavement to his quiet eyes, darting across crime scenes; Pattinson's Batman is the living shadow of vengeance – striking fear deep into the hearts of the crime infested underworld of Gotham. From an incredible supporting cast to the absolute mastery of Reeves' vision and Giacchino's powerful score – this episode unravels the many moving pieces that make this film one to remember. But as a film that is confident in exploring The World's Greatest Detective – were we left wanting more from the Riddler's cat-and-mouse games? Was exploring a young, brash and inexperienced Bruce Wayne an inspired choice or does it take away from Batman's own superiority? Or that suit? Do we miss the campy Adam West costumes to the neckbrace on Keaton to the nipples on Clooney; how does Pattinson's Year 2 Suit stack up against the rest? Is RPatz too emo for Bruce Wayne? Where does he go from here – Court of Owls? Hush? With a rogues gallery as iconic as Batman, is there Do meta-humans such as Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze or Solomon Grundy exist in this Gotham?  This episode takes a dive into all things Caped Crusader, pulling the curtain back on how The Batman influences, influenced and pushes the Superhero genre forward. Also, the trio tackle an experimental business model for AMC movie theatres and Netflix takes a stand against the Russian Film Industry – all of this and more in this week's Layered Butter!Preshow:Netflix Pauses Russian Projectshttps://variety.com/2022/tv/news/netflix-pauses-russia-projects-acquisitions-1235194200/AMC introduces variable pricing on The Batman tickets.https://deadline.com/2022/03/amc-entertainment-ceo-adam-aron-batman-tickets-variable-pricing-box-office-1234968595/Film Club:Zodiac (2007)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443706/Se7en (1995)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114369/

Nick (@grimdark40kminis) joins us this week to discuss our favourite zealots in 40K! A huge fan of Sisters and Black Templars, Nick is very familiar with beings who will go to extreme lengths in order to please their God. Like many of us, Nick found great solace in miniature painting over lockdown, but when an unforeseen disaster occurred, his hobby plans were largely derailed. However, this awesome Warhammer community in London (and around the world!) really rallied around him and he got to see firsthand how wonderful the wholesomeness in this community can be. He shares his story with us here. Also in this episode, Nick speaks about a terrible loss the London Warhammer community suffered last year. To commemorate the life of Antonio 'Jacko' Giacchino, many of us have donated to Myositis UK. This is a charity that provides information to patients like Antonio that have been affected by Myositis. Myositis UK also provides vital funding for research to improve diagnosis and treatments.
