In every revolution there's one man with a vision. And that man is John Byrne. But he did not just have one, he had multiple New Visions, so much so that IDW comics published a series by that name: Star Trek: New Visions. 3rd Degree Byrne takes a look at the first regular issue in the Star Trek New Visions series, a story titled “The Mirror, Cracked”. Now we just have to see if they got seven years bad luck. The whole crew is here; John Hijatt, Kirk Greenfield, David Thompson, Brian Hughes and Tim Elliott, and they have a great diversion from the regular art here as John Byrne did not draw this story, but put it together as a photo-montage. It is really something to see as Byrne writes it as an original series episode. You can practically hear the voices and the music. We also talk a little bit about some good TV, like Star Trek Discovery, and discuss the latest news on Byrne himself. Not to worry, it is nothing bad, but we know John Byrne found it shocking. So pull up a mirror, a cool tall one and relax as 3rd Degree Byrne knock out Star Trek, New Visions #1. You will wind up talking to yourself over this one. Scott Mantz: Star Trek Fotonovels. Before VCRs, DVRs and Netflix, viewers had to watch Star Trek as it appeared on TV. There were no options to record. You couldn't buy the episodes on Blu-ray or download them online. To relive favorite episodes, fans were at the mercy of watching reruns on their local TV station. The only way to enjoy certain episodes over and over again on your own time was to open a book filled with full-color photographs and dialogue directly from the series. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson are joined by Access Hollywood's Scott Mantz to talk about Star Trek Fotonovels from the 1970s. We discuss our fond memories of the '70s, Scott's favorite episode of all time, his collection of all twelve fotonovels, their influence on John Byrne's New Visions comics, and the interviews and glossaries found in the back of the books. In the news segment, we talk about new comics from IDW Publishing coming in November and the latest issue of Star Trek New Visions #17: "All the Ages Frozen." Chris and Cindy beam back aboard the Enterprise to review two recent photonovel comics by industry legend John Byrne, and published by IDW! These “lost episodes” feature actual images of Shatner, Nimoy and company…recomposited to fit Byrnes's new stories! First up is Star Trek Annual, 2013: “Strange New Worlds”. The Enterprise intercepts a transmission from Delta Vega… the planet where Captain Kirk was forced to kill his best friend Gary Mitchell…driven mad by god-like power in the 2nd series pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. Has Mitchell returned? And if so, what does he want? In Star Trek: New Visions #2, “Time's Echo”, a startling message from 1,000 years ago surfaces. A message sent by…Captain James T. Kirk! How could the Enterprise have sent this message centuries before the crew was ever born? Also, Byrne reveals the true fate of Captain's Yeoman Janice Rand. It's classic Star Trek as you like it! Did the Franklins? Listen and find out! Download via iTunes. Be sure to let us know what you think! Let your voice be heard! We'd love to read it aloud in an upcoming episode.
