Hello, Libration Nation! This week, we're diving into the vibrant world of "Paper Girls," an imaginative comic series by Brian K. Vaughn with artwork by Cliff Chiang. This series, which intertwines coming-of-age narratives with sci-fi elements, is a thrilling ride that takes us through time travel and interwoven destinies.Joining me this week is comedian and bookseller Mary Jane French. Mary Jane has been performing Stand-up since she was 18-years-old. After starting her gender transition, she began cultivating material that captured her early experiences with transition and recorded it in a home-made special entitled Mary Jane French: Bearded Woman. Currently Mary Jane is producing comedy shows in Richmond, VA with Traverse Comedy. This week, we indulged in a delightful drink choice: a warm, soothing apple cider, which is perfect as we slip further in our fall season, it's a bit of a play on words, as Mary Jane explains, Apple products play a quirky role in the series. While ours was the classic non-alcoholic version, we can't forget to mention that apple ciders can be easily personalized with a splash of your favorite spirit, or simply enjoyed with a cinnamon stick for a spicy twist. As always, if you enjoyed our lively discussion and want to help us grow our community, please share, like, review, and subscribe wherever you tune into our episodes. I'm not generally a supporter of AI for most things (it isn't even really AI anyway), and yet I cannot deny the impact it's had upon the trans community. So I wanted to write about it, but what I didn't realize is that what I was really writing about is the past and why it's so complicated for people who transition as adults. And what happens when we can get a glimpse of... a new past? A world that was perhaps more kind to us? We're gonna dig in to the most difficult two trans tuesdays I've ever had to write, because it means confronting really hard stuff. Episode 200!? This week we are giving our thoughts on "Catwoman: Lonely City"! In a world without Batman…will Selina Kyle's old wounds tear Gotham City apart? Cliff Chiang writes and illustrates the ultimate Catwoman masterpiece! Ten years ago, the massacre known as Fools' Night claimed the lives of Batman, the Joker, Nightwing, and Commissioner Gordon…and sent Selina Kyle, the Catwoman, to prison. A decade later, Gotham has grown up—it's put away costumed heroism and villainy as childish things. The new Gotham is cleaner, safer…and a lot less free, under the watchful eye of Mayor Harvey Dent and his Batcops. It's into this new city that Selina Kyle returns, a changed woman…with her mind on that one last big score: the secrets hidden inside the Batcave! She doesn't need the money—she just needs to know…who is “Orpheus”? Visionary creator Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman, Paper Girls) writes, draws, colors, and letters the story of a world without Batman, where one woman's wounds threaten to tear apart an entire city! It's an unmissable artistic statement that will change the way you see Gotham's heroes and villains forever! This volume collects Catwoman: Lonely City #1-4. Editors - Nick Olah, Marissa Mueller and Ivan Victor ACE THE AFTERPARTY editors; Nick Olah, Marissa Mueller and Ivan Victor ACE, not only got to have fun with the classic "Roshomon" style of storytelling for the Apple TV + original series, but they also got to do it by paying homage to their favorite film genres and filmmakers. From erotic thrillers to film noir, from Hitchcock to Wes Anderson, no style and no "body" was spared in their comedy whodunnit. In Season Two of THE AFTERPARTY, Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Zoë (Zoë Chau) are celebrating one year together following last season's events. They attend the wedding of Zoë's sister, Grace (Poppy Liu), to an eccentric Silicon Valley businessman named Edgar (Zach Woods). When Edgar and his pet lizard Roxana are found dead the following morning, Aniq calls Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) for help. Danner, who has left the LAPD to write a book about the murder she solved in Season One, agrees to take the case before the local police get involved. Once the interrogations begin, it's clear that everyone had a motive to send the groom to his grave. Nick Olah O.G. "Afterparty" editor Olah not only brought eight episodes of Season One experience of the show into Season Two, but he also brought his history of cutting such shows as: THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (2017-18), MacGRUBER (2021) and YOUNG ROCK (2022). Marissa Mueller Joining THE AFTERPARTY for the first time in Season Two, Marissa already had a friend and former YOUNG ROCK (2022) colleague in Nick Olah welcoming her to the series. Marissa's other credits include shows like NCIS: LA (2012-16) and BASED ON A TRUE STORY (2023). Ivan Victor, ACE Editor Ivan Victor makes his second appearance on The Rough Cut, following his turn talking about his work on the Amazon Prime show, PAPER GIRLS (2022). Jump behind the scenes with us to experience the highs and lows of producing one of Pixar's most celebrated and subversive films: Turning Red from the minds of Domee Shi and Julia Cho, who wrote it. Domee Shi began as a story intern at Pixar Animation Studios in June 2011, and was soon hired as a story artist on the Academy Award-winning feature film INSIDE OUT. In 2015 she began pitching ideas for short films, and soon was green lit to write and direct BAO which won the Academy Award® for Best Animated Short Film. Shi most recently made her feature film directorial debut on TURNING RED which was also Oscar-nominated. Her TURNING RED co-writer Julia Cho began her career in the New York Theater scene, writing a number of celebrated plays which scored her the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize in 2020 celebrating her body of her work. Her work as a playwright earned her spots in a number of prestigious writers' rooms including BIG LOVE, HALT AND CATCH FIRE, and PAPER GIRLS, which she co-executive produced. This week's episode was recorded in an alternate reality where Tod doesn't watch the entire season of a TV show before Barry and Dave get through the pilot episode. First up is Paper Girls from Amazon Prime, which is based on a comic by Brian K. Vaughan, that (again alternate reality) Tod has never read. Next is Kaleidoscope, from Netflix, the Giancarlo Esposito led ensemble heist drama that breaks conventions as well as vaults. More of a heads up than spoiler, you want to watch the “White” episode last. In other weirdness, Barry gives a thumbs down on Willow the series and Dave references his favorite Tim Burton film. They also cover the New trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3, which may well be the best thing there is in a certain galaxy far, far, away. And then there's What's in the Box, where the three hosts talk about the, EXO-6 Star Trek the Motion Picture: Kolinahr Spock figure. Which is equally awesome and scarce. Thanks for listening!
Brian K. Vaughan is the guest on this special January 2023 fundraising episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show. He is the writer of such award-winning comic books and graphic novels as Saga, Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and Paper Girls. ***Your generosity and support help to sustain the podcast and to keep it free, not behind a paywall and available to all listeners.*** Brian reflects on the return of Saga after an extended hiatus and the great and painful changes that have befallen the beloved characters in the series. He also shares how Saga and its main character Hazel have grown in parallel with his own life and family. Brian offers his thoughts and wisdom on navigating the challenging times in this world, artistic integrity, and managing life, stress, joy, and other emotions and ups and downs as someone who is creative for a living. In honor of Brother Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Chauncey highlights the differences between the real radical truth-teller and pro-democracy hope warrior Dr. King and how his legacy and struggle and sacrifice have been distorted by the American mythmaking machine and colorblind racism and white supremacy. There is also a bonus segment on this episode of the podcast in honor of Dr. King. Paul Breines was a student at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin and a member of the Student Council on Civil Rights when he was arrested for his participation in the Freedom Rides during the summer of 1961. He shares what it was like to challenge Jim Crow racial terrorism--with his life--as a Freedom Rider during the Civil Rights Movement, how he as a white person made the decision while in college to confront white supremacy, and the rules of living a principled life that he learned from his mother. Listen to the pod to hear how…while supplies last!On this episode of X-Ray Vision, Jason Concepcion and Rosie Knight plant a garden with Poison Ivy! First in Previously On (8:08), Jason and Rosie discuss the insanity that is the Batgirl movie cancellation by Warner Bros. In the Airlock (32:30) they dive deep (deeep) into season 3 of the raunchy, joyful, layered series that is Harley Quinn; plus, they give an overview of the first episodes of Amazon's adaptation of Paper Girls – exploring why you may want to check it out and how there actually is no comparison to be made between Paper Girls and Stranger Things. Then, in the Hive Mind (59:16) Jason and Rosie are joined by Rosie's Godzilla comic collaborator Oliver Ono to discuss their creative process on the comic (out now!) and why you should put yourself out there regardless of your artistic insecurities. Finally in Nerd Out (1:27:11), CJ pitches us on the classic animated series Gargoyles.Tune in every Friday and don't forget to Hulk Smash the Follow button!Nerd Out Submission Instructions!Send a short pitch and 2-3 minute voice memo recording to xray@crooked.com that answers the following questions: 1) How did you get into/discover your ‘Nerd Out?' When the artist Cliff Chiang co-created the comic book series Paper Girls, about four suburban kids in the ‘80s who get caught up in forces that can break space and time, he thought they'd come up with something totally original. But soon after the comic book came out, Stranger Things debuted on Netflix. Both creative projects are part of a genre that's more popular than ever: Kids on Bikes. I talk with Cliff about why he wanted Paper Girls to stand out from other Kids on Bikes stories. Screenwriter Stephany Folsom discusses how she adapted Paper Girls into an Amazon Prime Video live-action show by pitching it as “anti-nostalgia.” I also talk with game designers Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski about how they distilled the elements of Kids on Bikes stories into a role-playing game, and whether the genre is ready to outgrow its 1980s setting.
