Today's story: "The Ugly Duckling" is adapted from a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.Free activity sheet available at www.rituvaish.com/the-ugly-ducklingSend your artwork to rituvaish@gmail.com.Transcript ONCE ON A FARM LONG AGO, a Mama Duck sat on her nest. “How long must I wait for my babies to hatch? I have to sit here all by myself!” But what could she do? A Mama duck must keep her eggs warm till they hatch. At last, the eggs began to crack. One yellow duckling stepped out of its shell, then another. Each little chick shook its wings. “Quack, quack!”“Look at you!” cried Mama Duck with joy. “You're all so cute!”“Quack, quack, quack!” they said with pride.“Come line up," said Mama Duck. "We will go down to the lake for your very first swim.”She counted – one, two, three, four, five.“Oh dear!” she said with a frown. “I had six eggs. I should have six ducklings.”One large egg was still in the nest. “Well!" said Mama Duck, "it looks like that big egg will take more time.” So she returned to sit on her nest again and wait some more. The next day, the big egg started to hatch! Out popped a baby boy bird. Mummy thought, “My goodness! How different this one looked!” He was much larger than the others. He was not yellow, but dark-grey all over. And after he stepped out of his egg, he also walked with a funny wobble. Children and all animals walk differently. Can you try the walk of some animals like, duck, lion, deer, elephant etc.Nice! I am sure you enjoyed that. One of the yellow ducklings pointed. “What's that? He can't be one of us!”“I have never seen such an ugly duckling!” said another. “How can you say such a thing?” said Mama Duck in a very stern voice. “You are only one day old! Your brother hatched from the very same nest as you did. Now line up. We will go to the lake for your very first swim.”All the way the other ducklings quacked, “Ugly! Ugly! Ugly!” The Ugly Duckling did not know why the other ducklings were yelling at him. He fell behind to take the last spot in line. When they got to the lake, each yellow duck jumped in and swam behind Mama Duck. When it was his turn, the Ugly Duckling jumped in too, and he started to paddle. “At least he can swim,” Mama Duck thought to herself. When the yellow ducklings got out of the water and started to play, the Ugly Duckling tried to play with his brothers and sisters. They yelled at him, “Go away! We will not play with you! You are ugly. And you walk weird!” Children, how do you think the ugly duckling felt?Yes, sad indeed.I hope you include everyone in your games. When Mama Duck was close by, she would not let them talk this way.“Be nice!” she would scold. But she was not always close by.One day, one of the yellow ducklings said to the Ugly Duckling, “You know what? You would do us a big favour if you just went away!” All of them started to quack: “Go! Go away!”“Why won't they let me stay with them?” thought the Ugly Duckling. He hung his head down low. “They must be right. I should go.” And he flew to the other side of the lake trying to find some friends.Unfortunately, nobody wanted to play with him. ‘‘Go away!' said the pig.‘Go away!' said the sheep.‘Go away!' said the cow. ‘Go away!' said the horse. No one wanted to be his friend. Soon, it started to get cold. It started to snow! The ugly duckling found an empty barn and lived there. He was cold, sad and alone. At last, spring came. Little dots of green spotted the tree branches. Short, bright flowers popped up from the ground. “It's time for me to go back to the lake to swim again,” the ugly duckling thought. “I feel good!” said the young bird, flapping his wings. “Why, I don't think I ever felt as strong as I do right now!”Spring passed, then summer. The leaves started to change colors when one day, the Ugly Duckling heard quiet splashing sounds behind him. He turned around.A flock of beautiful birds sat on the lake.“Don't worry!” he said to the beautiful birds, holding out one of his wings.“I am leaving. I won't make trouble for you.” When he happened to glance down at the lake, he saw a reflection in the water that looked like one of those beautiful birds. Why was the bird so close to him? He jumped back. The reflection jumped back, too. Children whose reflection was that?Yes! The ugly ducklings, who had now become a swan. “What's this?” he thought, puzzled. He stretched his neck and strangely, the reflection of the beautiful bird in the lake stretched its neck, too. A little later he started to leave the lake.“Why are you leaving so soon?" called out one of the beautiful birds. "Come back!” said another.  “Stay with us!” said yet another swan. “We'll be friends.”Then, the bird who used to be the Ugly Duckling realized what had happened. He was no longer an ugly grey bird that wobbled when it walked. He had grown into a beautiful swan! Then a dark thought crossed his mind."You only want me because I'm a swan and I look like you," said he. "That's not it at all!" said the first swan who had spoken. "We saw you all alone down here and thought you might want to join us. We don't care how birds look. Why, take a look at Pelican over there." "No one would take me for a swan," squawked Pelican.  "How did you end up with them?" asked once the Ugly Duckling."Stayed up too late the night before," shrugged Pelican. "Slept till noon. My flock took off without me. Was sure glad the swans came along when they did. Thanks, guys!" Said the second swan who had spoken, "And there's Egret." "What can I tell you?" said Egret. "I love to ride those wind currents! Then found out my entire flock was gone. By then there was no way I could catch up. If the swans didn't come along and invited me to join them, who knows where I'd be now?" Another good point. Our hero often imagined how lovely it would be to stretch out and just fly, fly, and fly some more. The bird who used to be an Ugly Duckling considered, "These birds may be beautiful to look at, but they are also beautiful inside. This is the flock for me." And so the entire flock, including their newest friend, flapped their wings together. And in one moment the flock took off into the clear blue sky. Moral:The true beauty is what is inside of our heart. No matter how you are be yourself and love yourself the way you are.

The Reddish Egret, a particularly glamorous heron, is best known for its startling antics in capturing fish. When fishing, the egret sprints across the lagoon, weaving left and right, simultaneously flicking its broad wings in and out, while stabbing into the water with its bill. Fish startled at the egret's crazed movements become targets of that pink dagger. At times, the bird will raise its wings forward over its head, creating a shadow on the water. It then freezes in this position for minutes. Fish swim in, attracted by a patch of shade and . . . well, you know the rest.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Platemark hosts Ann Shafer and Tru Ludwig offer up a bonus HoP episode featuring a conversation about a single work of art. Occasionally we will drop a BONUS EP ONE PRINT, which will take a single work and pull it apart with an eye toward exploring subject matter, technique, style, and composition. The first of these episodes features the etching Battlefield, 1907, by Käthe Kollwitz.   We hope this new kind of conversation resonates, and we'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions for other great prints worthy of a 90-minute episode.   Fun fact: Käthe is pronounced KAY-tuh, not Cathy; in Kollwitz, the W sounds like a V.   Episode image: Käthe Kollwitz (German, 1867–1945). Hello again fellow Golfists, I shared a few of thoughts on the final round at the 2023 Honda Classic at PGA National today.  Congratulations to Chris Kirk for his first victory on the PGA Tour in 8 years.  Glad to see that the one club that wasn't Callaway didn't cost him the whole enchilada today, his Taylor Made Stealth 3 wood.  He was able to regroup on the 18th in regulation and forced a playoff and eventually won it all.  It was good to see Jack Nicklaus offer his thoughts on the play on the final day at what was the last tournament that Honda will be sponsoring.  Honda has been the sole sponsor for this tournament at least 40 years.  This tournament started as the Jackie Gleason Inverrary Classic 51 years ago in 1972.  It was interesting to see Mr. Nicklaus offer his thoughts on the tournament going forward, with insight as to how the future tour schedule will be.  I also shared a bit of feedback on my most recent visit to the putting green at the Thunder Valley Golf Resort at Whitney Oaks.  I also may have won a prize by one of my comments on a video that I saw recently.  Hope you are well and thanks for listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast!!GOD Bless America!!

Imagine if you were a dominant recruiter in your industry with a portfolio of clients who come to you for all their hiring needs.  That doesn't happen overnight and requires persistence. As you'll hear in my interview with Brooke Ziolo, it's certainly achievable with the right mindset and methodology. Brooke is the President of Egret Consulting, and has been an Executive Recruiter for 14 years. She and her team have become the Go-To recruiters for the lighting industry covering positions in sales, marketing, engineering, and operations from mid-level to C-Suite.   In this episode, she shares how they became the market leading recruiters within the lighting industry.  She describes in detail how they reach out to clients and candidates with a blend of manual and automated processes plus an attitude of polite and professional persistence.  Brooke's history of how and when she started her recruiting career is a resounding story of resilience, leading to her becoming a Partner of Egret in 2013, the Managing Director in 2016, and purchasing the firm in 2019. She was inducted into the Pinnacle Society, the premier consortium of industry-leading recruiters in North America, in 2016. Episode Outline and Highlights [01:56] Brooke's challenging first year in recruiting. [06:05] Brooke's mindset and method for building her desk during a recession.  [11:11] What has changed in Egret's approach to marketing over the past 14 years?  [20:20] Would you consider reaching out via cold text? Discussion on combining videos and text when reaching out. [25:04] Brooke's recipe for success - from being a recruiter, a partner, and the decision of becoming a recruitment firm owner.  [39:38] Brooke's vision on taking the Egret company forward. [41:42] Retaining employee engagement while shifting to a fully remote setup. Starting Her Recruitment Career During the 2008 Recession Brooke started her recruitment career in 2008, during the Great Recession. As you can imagine, it was extremely challenging. She only made 2 placements that whole year! But Brooke's mindset and strategy during that turbulent time lead to her being successful when people started hiring again.  Reminiscing her early days, Brook explained, “The only thing I control is how many calls I make. So if I keep making more calls than everybody in the office… that is all I can do right now. I kept just pounding the phones until somebody told me no or I am sick of you.” For Brooke, it is all about her polite persistence. She understood the balance of not harassing anyone but staying within professional boundaries to put her name out there even if she was not making many placements. The result? People remembered her! Making all those phone calls enabled her to build her network of industry connections so people thought of her when they started hiring again. Blended Approach to Marketing and Business Development Cold calling and polite persistence laid the foundation for Brooke to become a top-producing recruiter and billing manager. But how has her approach to business development and marketing evolved over the last 14 years? Here are some of the strategies she shared in this episode: MPC Marketing Monthly Newsletter LinkedIn outreach Advertising in the trade publication for her industry Text messaging We also shared tips and ways on cold text messaging. Many recruiters are afraid of sending unsolicited text messages and are concerned about receiving a negative reaction from the recipient. On the other hand, texting is a very effective way to communicate and typically gets a much faster response compared to other platforms such as email. Brooke shared how she does it and how much response she gets in doing so. Brooke's Success Mindset In 2019, Brooke purchased the firm from her father who was the founder of Egrit Consulting. Acquiring the business wasn't something she had initially set out to accomplish. But after falling in love with recruitment and becoming a top recruiter in the firm, she started being able to imagine the possibility of taking over the business.   I asked Brooke's recipe for success. In addition to her persistence and also being niche-focused, she shared three keys: : Positive self-talk and affirmation Taking her time and putting one foot in front of the other Learning from past experience I have always aimed to understand recruitment owners' formulas for success. And Brooke certainly delivered in this episode. Our Sponsors This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur. i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of August 1 and August 8, 2022.  This is a revised repeat of an episode from August 2015. SOUNDS – ~4 sec – call from Great Egret then from Great Blue Heron. In this episode, we feature two mystery sounds, and a guest voice, to explore two striking birds—striking in looks, and striking in how they hunt.  Have a listen for about 30 seconds, and see if you can guess these two long-necked, long-legged wading birds. SOUNDS AND GUEST VOICE – ~30 sec – Voice: “At once he stirs and steps into the water, wading with imperial self-possession on his three-pronged, dragonish feet.  The water could not tremble less at the passage of his stilt legs as he stalks his dinner.  His neck arches like the bending of a lithe bow, one of a piece with the snapping arrow of his beak.” If you guessed, egret or heron, you're right!  The first call was from a Great Egret and the second from a Great Blue Heron.  The guest voice was Alyson Quinn, reading part of her “Lesson from an Egret,” inspired by a September 2007 visit to the Potomac River.  The word “egret” derives from an old German word for “heron,” a fitting origin for the many similarities between these two big birds.  The Great Egret and the Great Blue Heron are the two largest of 12 North American species of herons, egrets, and bitterns.  The Great Egret is strikingly white, while the Great Blue has only a partially white head over a bluish-gray body.  But a white subspecies of the Great Blue, called the Great White Heron, occurs in Florida.  Great Egrets and Great Blues both typically feed in shallow water, taking fish, amphibians, and other prey by waiting and watching quietly, then quickly striking with their long, sharp beaks.  The two species also share a history of having been widely hunted for their long plumes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the impact on their populations helped lead to nationwide bird-conservation efforts and organizations. Distinctive looks, behavior, and history make these two “Greats” a memorable and meaningful sight along Virginia's rivers, ponds, marshes, and other areas.  Thanks to Lang Elliott for permission to use this week's sounds, from the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs, and thanks to Alyson Quinn for permission to share her “Lesson from an Egret,” which gets this episode closing words. GUEST VOICE – ~18 sec – “I want to be more like the egret, with the patience to be still without exhaustion, to never mind the idle currents or be dazzled by the glamour of light on water; but, knowing the good thing I wait for, to coil my hope in constant readiness, and to act in brave certitude when it comes.” SHIP'S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Ben Cosgrove for his version of “Shenandoah” to open and close this episode.  In Blacksburg, I'm Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. "I'm trying to get people curious." Travel film and video content is changing, particularly as the pandemic redefines the way we think about the purpose of travel and the meaning of tourism. To get an insider's perspective on where we are heading, Gary chats with award-winning filmmaker Kamila Delart. Based on the Malaysian island of Langkawi for a decade, Kamila has worked with tourism boards and travel companies across South East Asia. She also produces her own short films focusing on slow travel, cultural heritage and nature. In a fascinating chat, the show journeys from shooting inside heritage temples to spotting sea otters on an empty beach and an as-yet-unfulfilled shoot in Papua New Guinea. En route, Kamila discusses her multi-award-winning film, The Egret's Voyage, which was shot along the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, East Malaysia, and honoured at film festivals in Cyprus, New York and Montenegro. She also talks about the ethical and cultural responsibilities that content creators must respect, and the challenges of creating tourism video content for different demographics and markets. Above all, Kamila believes that the future of travel filmmaking will encourage people to slow down and experience destinations with all their senses.
