Jill ‘Sixx' Gevargizian is the director of The Stylist that first showed up as a short, in the 2018 anthology, Watch If You Dare. It was co-written by Eric Havens, who is also co-writer on Call Girl, Jill's debut film and this year is the 10 year anniversary! Jill talks her secret to success and why she surrounds herself with people who are good at what they do and who are better at it than she is. It's been her version of film school. She points to her having a good network to source from when thinking about a project and that project's success. Knowing people like Laurence Harvey (from Human Centipede) who she met at a convention and Tristan Risk (from American Mary) who she met through working with the Soska Sisters, knowing the right people just made it easy to execute her movies. Jill brought her years of experience in her trade as a hairstylist in her film, The Stylist, to make it as realistic as possible. So she created the first hairstylist slasher flick! She talks about other amazing films and franchises that also got their starts as shorts like Saw and The Babadook. Jill's film career really began with the creation of Slaughter Movie House where weird indie horror shorts are shown. She is producing on a film doing festivals right now (as of Summer 2023) called Black Mold, so keep an eye out!! Check out the Texas Chainsaw Massacre documentary, The Legacy of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jill is also on that as a super fan and contributor! Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The #Podcast with @CatBusRuss".  CatBusRuss is pondering how often he should be releasing new episodes of "Ninety For the Chill". This current season has had a great balance of episodes dedicated to his own personal binges and conversations with great guests. But with so many podcasts having a monthly or biweekly release schedule, is the CatBus working too hard? The episode for next week is in the can, so this week, our host is keeping up the ani-May theme by watching Studio Ghibli's spiritual successor's, Studio Ponoc, first feature, "Mary and the Witch's Flower". It is a fun kids film. Then CatBus pulls out some reviews that sum up his own maturity. It starts with coming of age in the punk rock world with "London Town" and moves on to the oversexed college experience with Gregg Araki's "Kaboom". From sexually explicit cinema, CatBus makes a quick transition to the other extreme of indie cinema with the Soska Sisters' remake of David Cronenberg's "Rabid". Cronenberg was one of the two patron saints of this podcast. The other is Stuart Gordon. What sounds better than Gordon with Lance Henriksen? To find out what that is like, you will hear a review for "The Pit and the Pendulum". If that is not enough of a Henriksen fix, stick around for a review of Stan Winston's directorial debut, "Pumpkinhead".

More women! More horror! Directors. And movies. We're right in the middle of a three-part series on horror movies directed by women! This episode features very strong evidence that sometimes dead is better, a young girl who dreams of creepy storybook characters while rabbits run wild in Australia, western expansion and cannibalism in the 19th-century, and a promising medical student driven to pursue an unconventional surgical career. Stephen King should be ashamed of himself. He gave a perfectly respectful graveyard honoring animals such a bad rap. It's a place where the dead speak. But you certainly do not want to go beyond, to the place where the dead walk! Director Mary Lambert takes us there and back again, in the first feature film adaptation of Pet Sematary (1989).Political tension, and rabbit panic are running wild in Australia in 1957. A young girl struggles with forbidden friendships, the death of her grandmother, the threat of her pet rabbit being taken away, and even her own imagination. Childhood proves to be a very challenging experience for Celia (1989), directed by Ann Turner. It's manifest destiny time in the United States. But some of these characters are definitely not who you would hope to encounter if you were heading west in the mid-1800s. Director Antonia Bird serves up a darkly comedic adventure of gruesome cannibalism, with some truly unsettling music setting the tone, in Ravenous (1999)!Ah, Katharine Isabelle is featured in the role of Mary Mason. A promising young medical student, who uses her skill to perform underground body modification surgeries.  But why would she leave medical school for such a pursuit? Well, money. And revenge. The Soska Sisters invite you to spend a little time under the knife, with American Mary (2012).

Jim Ojala's Strange Nature [Episode 12]

Jim Ojala is a special effects makeup artist, director, and co-host of my new favorite Shudder show, The Core, which is half horror talk show/half practical effects how-to with amazing guests such as Leigh Whannell, The Soska Sisters, and the lord of darkness himself, Glenn Danzig! Additionally, Jim Ojala is a Troma alum. His latest creature feature, Strange Nature, fairly bursts at the seams with this schlocky pedigree. Strange Nature seamlessly integrates Troma's no-holds-barred insanity with enough of a grounded storyline and authentic characters for audiences to stay engaged and take the film seriously. Overall, the movie is a great deal of fun and hits you with a very strong, timely message about the dangerous biological implications of industrialism. Here are Jim Ojala's three keys for aspiring indie filmmakers: Show progress – as he was raising funds for Strange Nature, Jim was already building the creatures. Investors and producers were excited to see something real and tangible to indicate that the film was really happening. More often than not, filmmakers have nothing but a script or an idea; but to have something—anything--that shows that you are already working on your film is super helpful when it comes to pitching producers. Use your own skills as much as you can. Jim and his creature effects company, Ojala Productions, made all of the mutant animals (except for the deformed frogs, which were real!). This enabled his low-budget movie to look and feel way more expensive.  If Jim had tried to hire a company to make all of his creatures, he would still be trying to raise money. (Damien Leone did a similar thing when he made all the effects for Terrifier). Low-budget filmmaking requires you to wear many hats. Figure out which of your personal skills will contribute best to the film's production value. Take a hard look at your script. Jim recounts that there were many scenes and sequences from Strange Nature that he had to cut from the final film because they didn't work. This was super painful, since those sequences were costly and time consuming.  He recommends that you edit your script mercilessly before you start shooting and shoot only what you need when working on a limited budget. Get a strong AD. Jim's first AD (Assistant Director) cracked under pressure and bailed on him four days into production, which set him back significantly. Indie filmmaking requires a different breed of AD: specifically, people with the flexibility, resilience, and resourcefulness to handle the ups and downs that come with low-budget filmmaking. It is imperative for indie directors to find proven indie ADs who can weather the storm with them. This is huge. BONUS: Work at Troma. Jim went so far as to state that Troma is where all aspiring filmmakers should start, because it's incredibly grueling and forces you to toughen up in all the ways directors need to be tough. It's also an exciting, fun and highly collaborative environment. Jim's description of his time at Troma is comparable to a military hell week, but it's the kind of experience that gives your indie filmmaking spirit the resolve of a Navy Seal.
