This week is the first of a new feature on the podcast: conversations with authors about what indie bookstores mean to them and their careers. I'm joined by Richard Mirabella, whose debut novel "Brother and Sister Enter the Forest" was released earlier this year to critical acclaim. His short stories have appeared in Story Magazine, American Short Fiction online, One Story, Split Lip Magazine, and elsewhere. Richard shares his favorite bookshops and the books he'd recommend to customers. Books We Talk About: The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon, I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marissa Crane, Endpapers by Jennifer Savron Kelly, Hawk Mountain by Conner Habib, Stephen Florida by Gabe Habash, and The Turner House by Angela Flournoy.
Alex and Lindsay talk with Christian Tebordo (THE APOLOGY) about our mutual love of Gabe Habash's STEPHEN FLORIDA; Nabokov always perched on his shoulder; Adam Levin's theory of “optimal tension”; loving books without hooks; women as avenging angels as inspired by Knight Rider, yes, that Knight Rider; writing books that are unpublishable by the mainstream; feeling liberated by bad reviews; talking with his students about the possibilities of publishing; Chicago's unique literary scene; and if you can believe it, more! Jenny hosts a new guest in the Reading Envy Pub and we chat mood reading, new releases, the line between gothic and horror, and more. Robin talks about a book club she's been in that's older than a typical college student, and because we are both academic librarians facing reopening in a pandemic, we talk a little baseball. Jessica and I are superfans of the Morning News Tournament of Books, and have participated as readers for several years. We are not official partners of the Tournament, nor does it belong to us, but we are hopeful that all involved will take this as a fancast and that readers who haven't heard of it will participate next time. Both of us have encountered books through the Tournament we would never have read otherwise. In this bonus episode, we focus on the books from this year's Tournament (both the long and shortlist) but also end up talking about some highlights from previous years. On this episode we discuss Gabe Habash's 2017 novel Stephen Florida, which leads us to wonder what we mean when we say a book is "voicey." Around the 59 minute mark, we revisit some of our preseason NBA predictions to see what we got right and what we got wrong. Don't miss Dončić Corner (1hr 6 mins), wherein Jesse describes what it was like to see Luka Dončić up close and personal in Charlotte earlier this week. Next up is Andrew Martin's Early Work -- join us!
In this episode we chat about the novel Eileen, before pivoting, at the 36 minute mark, to an appreciation of Luka Dončić, the Slovenian phenom currently taking over the NBA and making the Dallas Mavericks appointment television. Next up, we'll be reading and discussing Gabe Habash's novel Stephen Florida.
Christopher and Drew wrestle up Gabe Habash to drink, chat, and be merry. Christopher serves everyone a very strange cocktail based on Habash's Stephen Florida, then dive right into the very strange headspace of Mr. Florida. They discuss plot points vs. follow points, Moby Dick, and more, before falling for the dual plots of Iris Murdoch's The Nice and The Good. More Murdoch and much more in general, too! music: Disaster Magic - Desert Snake and Coconut Crab (https://soundcloud.com/disaster-magic) contribute! patreon.com/smdb for drink recipes, book lists, and more, visit: somanydamnbooks.com Learn more about your ad choices. On Episode 338 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we visit with Gabe Habash, author of the recently released novel Stephen Florida. The novel follows the main character, Stephen Florida, through his last year of college wrestling at a small college in North Dakota. We see who he is internally ad externally and what has made him who he is. Habash's story is a solid read, but what is even more compelling outside of the story itself is Habash had no wrestling experience to draw from. He'll explain why he chose wrestling and how he got things like terminology with tremendous accuracy. If you haven't read the book, warning, there's some spoilers here, but you can order it here. This week, I am excited to present a conversation with one of my best friends, a former writing partner and roommate, and one of the most reflective human beings I know, Alex McElroy. Alex is currently a Doctoral student at the University of Houston, where he is pursuing his doctorate in English and Creative Writing. Alex and I catch up a bit - since I last visited him in Texas in November - and discuss a wide array of topics, from teaching reading and writing composition, to the future of education, as well as what it was like being abroad in Bulgaria and how that experience influenced his writing. I had a lot of fun with this conversation, and I'm so thankful that we were able to have it! EPISODE NOTES: - Alex is the current fiction editor for Gulf Coast, and was previously the International editor for the Hayden's Ferry Review. - Snag a copy of Allegra Hyde's debut collection, "Of This New World" - Alex wrote this pretty brutal story about the time he and his wife spent in Bulgaria - it appear courtesy of the New England Review. - Here's a wonderful piece about Margaret Atwood, the Handmaid's Tale, and the age of Trump - Alex references this wonderful talk by Tristan Harris about social media, technology and distractions - Alex's new chapbook, "Daddy Issues," will be released this fall through the Cupboard Pamphlet. - Need a new author to check out? Alex cannot suggest the works of Robert Walser enough - especially the book, Jakob Von Gunten. - Check out "Stephen Florida," by Gabe Habash - Outside of Gulf Coast, Alex also suggests that people support the Black Warrior Review, as well as The Offing! Get your reading on, folks! - Ever the existentialist, Alex is a big fan of "The Squid and the Whale," and the French psychological film, "Personal Shopper." - And finally, if you need to get in touch with your softer side, check out Elliott Smith's brilliant album, “either/or” YOU CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH ALEX ON TWITTER @ABMCELROY1 Or check out his online portfolio at alexmcelroy.org. And I will update this page when his book is up for preorder! ADVERTISING NOTES: - This week's episode is sponsored by Plucking Yew Promotions and Matt Palmer Media. Are you an artist or musician? Do you need some quick design work done? Reach out to Matt Palmer! He's an incredibly talented based in the midwest and would love to help you out! This week's song is "Take Care," by Heart of Gold, of the album a Profound Sense of Slipping. AUDIO/MUSIC NOTES: I make a brief comment at the beginning of the chat with Alex that the audio for our conversation was recorded before I had received my podcasting microphone/proper recording program, so bare with us for a couple moments on this recording and stay tuned for it to only get better from here! - The intro song is an instrumental version of the Circa Survive song, "Wish Resign." Thanks for listening again this week! I'll be back next week with another chat for your ears! In the meantime, SUBSCRIBE, RATE, and SHARE the podcast!
