Hello everyone! I have been away longer than usual between episodes due to circumstances, and I appreciate you all coming back to listen. As a kind of compensation, this is a long one today—I got to talk to one of my favorite people to get into it with, Conner Habib. We had recorded a conversation along with Dean Spade in the approach to the election in order to reorient people's thoughts and attention towards politics beyond the state—and so we decided to reconvene, the two of us, post-election, to discuss the relationship of feeling to thinking and doing. There was of course an intensity of feeling after the election, with many claims about how people should respond and act. Instead of going that route, Conner and I try to explore ways of not giving up our feelings and power to the spectacle of politics and everything it demands from us. In doing this, we aim to expand the possibilities of action, and to reconceive our relationship to the political in a way that develops a new language or a new grammar that no long constrains us. Along the way, we talk about nottaking materialism as the only basis for politics, which gets us into both religious forms of power and the consideration of a spiritual relationship to the self and the world. As I say at the end, Conner's podcast, Against Everyone /w Conner Habib, is an incredible resource that dives into many of these ideas through discussion and thinking. Conner references a recent series of episodes he published as a guide to engaging in a spiritual life. That might be a great place to start if you have not already listened to his podcast. He also wrote the intense novel, Hawk Mountain, which I also highly recommend. Subscribe to Conner's Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/ConnerHabib), and find Hawk Mountain here. Hawk Mountain is now a nature sanctuary and one of the best places around to watch migrating birds, hike, appreciate the outdoors, and if you're lucky, you'll see a hatchet wielding ghost of the former innkeeper. Willi Singleton is a Pennsylvania potter who's well-known among students and teachers of the Japanese way of tea as a maker of beautiful, lustrous teawares that are joy to use. Today we're sitting down with Willi in his Kempton, Pennsylvania studio, at the base of Hawk Mountain, to explore his creative process and the techniques and philosophy that go into the creation of his unique teaware and other ceramic art. We chat with Willi about his introduction to clay art and especially Japanese clay art, his time in Japan studying and working with traditional Japanese potters, and his transition back to the US and the beginnings of his Kempton studio. Willi almost exclusively uses local and regional clay and glazes in his work, and we talk about the importance of connecting to the place, the locality, in which a work is made and how that plays out in Willi's process and its results. We discuss the techniques and challenges of working with place-connected materials, the "flavor" and what Willi calls the "veto power" of the clay, Willi's focus on elemental processes and mateirals, and the mystery and unpredictability inherent in the way Willi creates clay art. And we talk about Willi's connection to the tea community, how the community has influenced and continues to influence his teaware, about the communal aspects of art-making, and how each of Willi's pieces are a confluence of potter, place, landscape and community. In this episode, Shuli talks with Conner Habib, author of the novel Hawk Mountain and host of the podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib. The discussion goes into many different places, with certan themes about the connection between relationships and politics running throughout. We start this discussion talking about “breaking up with the state,” an idea Conner discussed on a couple of his podcast episodes and that was influential in Shuli's thinking about the crossover of relationships and politics. The conversation uses both personal and political perspectives to think about the dynamics of the failing state, its fascist grasps at power, what protest can do, how we respond to harm and conflict, and more. In this episode I am reading from Elizabeth Bodien's book 'Bigger Pete: Conversations Between Life and Afterlife'.When Pete was asleep, Elizabeth was in hypnotic trance, communicating through a psychic practice known as automatic writing. Bigger Pete is Elizabeth Bodien's parapsychological memoir about communicating with her brother over the last eight years of his life—and into the afterlife.Families and friends of people with Down syndrome will relish the loving communication between Pete, who had Down syndrome, and his sister Elizabeth. Caregivers of people with late-stage Alzheimer's will also recognize their own struggles in this personal story. Others in conversation with Elizabeth include Pete's deceased parents and Pete's higher self, identified as Bigger Pete. How can you communicate with someone who has passed on? In Bigger Pete: Conversations Between Life and Afterlife, Bodien addresses the question by writing from her personal experience and aiding those dealing with the loss of a loved one.Are you curious about what happens when people die and what happens next? Bigger Pete might not have the only answer, but it does have at least one answer.BioElizabeth Bodien is the author of two books of poetry: Blood, Metal, Fiber, Rock and Oblique Music: A Book of Hours and one non-fiction work: Journeys with Fortune: A Tale of Other Lives, a collection of her past lives experienced while in hypnotic trance. Her poems, essays, and book reviews have appeared in Cimarron Review, Crannóg, and Parabola, among other publications in the USA, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and India. She holds degrees in cultural anthropology, consciousness studies, religions, and poetry, and has worked as an English instructor in Japan, an organic farmer in the Oregon mountains, a childbirth instructor in West Africa, a Montessori teacher, and as a professor of cultural anthropology. Bodien, who grew up in the “burned over” district of western New York, now lives near Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania, USA.Amazon link https://tinyurl.com/3xn4bmsnhttps://elizabethbodien.com/https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast

Next week on Transmissions? Penelope Sheeris—director of The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization series, Wayne's World, and host of Peter and the Acid King, a podcast dedicated to the mysterious life and death of Peter Ivers.

As Alzheimer's Disease robs Elizabeth Bodien's brother Pete of his ability to speak, she finds she can still communicate with him, even after he has passed on. How is this possible? Elizabeth Bodien appears on the Sunbury Press Books Show to discuss her relationship with her brother, which travels beyond the physical plane in "Bigger Pete: Conversations Between Life and Afterlife," released on the Ars Metaphysica imprint. She talks of how her brother dealt with Down Syndrome and did not allow this to dictate his life. In his later years as his health failed, Elizabeth was able to communicate with Pete while he slept through a process known as "automatic writing." Bigger Pete became his higher self, and these talks continued for another eight years after he passed. Their story resonates with those who have family that suffered from Alzheimer's, and especially caregivers in the final years of life. Elizabeth grew up in the "burned-over" district of Western New York. Her education and travels took her around the world with the International School of America, and she earned a degree in cultural anthropology from the University of California. Her graduate work brought degrees in consciousness studies from John F. Kennedy University and phenomenology of religion from the Graduate Theological Union. She also taught English in Japan, was a childbirth instructor in West Africa, an organic farmer in Oregon, and a Montessori teacher. Post-retirement, she earned an MFA in poetry from Western Colorado State. Elizabeth is also the author of two books of poetry, "Blood, Metal, Fiber, Rock" and "Oblique Music: A Book of Hours" plus other works. She lives near Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania.

What begins to unfold and unfurl when we explore the presence and meaning of horror in art, in life and in the story of Christmas and Epiphany? We hope you will join us for this nearly two hour conversation between Patrick and Conner Habib. Its a wide-ranging conversation that takes us down many paths, including the call to christen Paganism and the wild nature spirits in our time, all while Conner and Patrick begin to uncover the meaning of the horrific elements woven into the mystery of Christmas and Christianity.*.Many of our listeners will already know Conner from when Patrick was interviewed on his podcast, Against Everyone with Conner Habib. Conner is truly a rare voice in our time, connecting with people in the arts, sciences, philosophy, politics, music, literature, and spirituality and sharing these deeper conversations built on honest thinking and compassionate listening. Conner has schooled himself in entering what is often uncomfortable, uncommon territory and finds true treasure there. One of those 'territories' is horror.  A long time fan of horror fiction and film, Conner is also a published author, with his first full-length novel, Hawk Mountain, releasing in July of 2022.  You can hear his own uninterrupted reflections on the value and power of art that includes the element of horror in this episode from his podcast. In our conversation, we turn our attention to the Christmas mystery and look to understand the presence of horror - of true darkness - at the birth of Christ. The festival of Christmas in its full form is not a one day event. It begins on the Holy Night of the 24th and lasts over twelve days, culminating in the festival of Epiphany on January 6th. Spiritually, there is a profound path taken from the shepherds, angels and peace of Luke's gospel on Christmas Day to the Kings, the star and Herod's massacre of children to protect his power and crown as described in Matthew's gospel.  From the paradisiacal innocence of Christmas we are led into the depths of moral darkness, danger and threat to the child, the true king, who is born.  All of these "icons" of Christ's nature foreshadow what we will all turn our attention to during Holy Week and Easter. The Christian story is told, without doubt, with profound elements of horror. But why? And why does the genre of horror itself seem to be growing in popularity in mass culture?  What is it that is revealed in the art of horror that has a role to play in our human becoming?  What is it in the reality of true evil in our time that has to do with the new appearance of Christ?A great and hearty thank you to Conner Habib for his willingness to explore these questions with us. New Year's and Epiphany blessing to you all!Support the show

Is there a link between birds and 007?  Well, author and American birder, Jim Wright says there is.  The title of his latest book says it all.   “The Real James Bond: A True Story of Identity Theft, Avian Intrigue and Ian Fleming.” The book says, “Long before Ian Lancaster Fleming became a bestselling author, a single-minded Philadelphia ornithologist named James Bond wrote Birds of the West Indies, based on repeated expeditions to the Bahamas and the Caribbean from 1927 to 1935.” Let's find out more about the real James Bond. From this episode, we have started recording audio and video. Here is our Youtube video link of this episode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSAcISsWbR8&t=132s Bio Jim Wright is the author of The Real James Bond, a biography of the author and birdman who fell prey to the world's most famous case of identity theft. The Wall Street Journal called it “siim and elegant” -- like Bond himself. It is available as a hard-cover, ebook and audiobook. A long-time prize-winning journalist, Wright has written lavishly illustrated nature books about Central America's largest rainforest, Pennsylvania's legendary Hawk Mountain, and the New Jersey Meadowlands. He has also written an interactive ebook about Bald Eagles.  Wright is a nature photographer and blogger. He writes “The Bird Watcher” column for USA Today newspapers in New Jersey. He lives with his wife Patty in Allendale, NJ, where he is a deputy marsh warden. Questions and Episode Timeline So who was the real James Bond? (Cuba's bee hummingbird, red-billed streamertail, ivory-billed woodpecker). Tell us about James Bond meeting Ian Fleming and the cave swallows episode? You have written about America's most iconic bird: the bald eagle.  Tell us about these spectacular raptors. In your blog, Celery Farm and Beyond, you describe the raptor counts that you've done at Hawk Mountain.  For those of us who have never been to Hawk Mountain, tell us why it is special and the raptors that you can see there? What attracts you to raptors? Which ones are especially interesting and why? Back to Bond…. In 1936, Bond wrote Birds of the West Indies.  Tell us about these birds that he discovered-- like the Zapata rail, wren and sparrow.  Also the Bahama nuthatch. Why do ornithologists make good spies? “Birdwatcher is old intelligence slang for spy. . . . Who are some ornithologists who make good spies? Talk about James Bond's legacy. Have you been to the West Indies? Which are some interesting birding locations you've visited and would recommend. What are some of your favorite bird species-- you've written about sparrows, pileated woodpeckers, juncos and such.

Schaumboch owned and operated a tavern on Hawk Mountain where weary travelers would stop for the night, and because he only chose those that either travelled alone or no one would miss, he was able to get away with the murders most of his life. There were even rumors that he fed his victims to unknowing guests at his tavern. James Wosochlo grew up in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, where his love for history aided him to come across this mystery. This week I am talking to Elizabeth Bodien about her book 'Journeys with Fortune: A Tale of Other Lives'. We discuss her powerful past life regressions, her automatic writing and her NDE. Trained in cultural anthropology, Elizabeth Bodien was at first skeptical that past lives even existed, much less that exploring them could heal present-life troubles. However, the first time she was professionally regressed, she immediately experienced a clear and complete life as Rita, a Mexican woman in the 1700s. There was a deeply emotional resonance there and Bodien began to feel she could very well have been Rita of 18th-century rural Mexico, as well as any number of other people. In Journeys with Fortune: A Tale of Other Lives, Bodien chronicles nine of the most fascinating and relevant of her past lives, including lives as an abandoned child raised in a nunnery in Helvetia, a male sandal-maker in Ancient Greece, a German calligrapher who speaks with the dead,  an Atlantean priestess-in-training, and even a future life. These experiences are presented with the author's careful attention at each stage: resistance, fascination, doubt, and renewed openness. And she might not have been able to continue if it weren't for her spirit guide, Fortune,  a mysterious stone spirit who guided her progress and led her to  become a writer of the “mysteries of life.”  For interested readers, Cosmographia Books has posted the complete first chapter of Journeys with Fortune on their website: https://www.cosmographiabooks.com/free-chapter-journeys Elizabeth Bodien is the author of two books of poetry: Blood, Metal, Fiber, Rock and Oblique Music: A Book of Hours. Her poems, essays, and book reviews have appeared in Cimarron Review, Crannóg, and Parabola, among many other publications. Bodien holds degrees in cultural anthropology, consciousness studies, religions, and poetry. She grew up in the “burned- over” district of Western New York but now lives near Hawk Mountain, Pennsylvania.
