Mexican Gothic Author Comes to Jacksonville Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic, is coming to Jacksonville for Hispanic Heritage Month. Her latest novel is a historical drama set in Hollywood, following three different point of view characters all tied to the production of a movie inspired by the Biblical story of Salome. FEATURED BOOK: The Seventh Veil of Salome 1950s Hollywood: Every actress wants to play Salome, the star-making role in a big-budget movie about the legendary woman whose story has inspired artists since ancient times. So when the film's mercurial director casts Vera Larios, an unknown Mexican ingenue, in the lead role, she quickly becomes the talk of the town. Vera also becomes an object of envy for Nancy Hartley, a bit player whose career has stalled and who will do anything to win the fame she believes she richly deserves. Two actresses, both determined to make it to the top in Golden Age Hollywood—a city overflowing with gossip, scandal, and intrigue—make for a sizzling combination. Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the author of a number of critically acclaimed novels, including Gods of Jade and Shadow (Sunburst Award for Excellence in Canadian Literature of the Fantastic, Ignyte Award), Mexican Gothic (Locus Award, British Fantasy Award, Pacific Northwest Book Award, Aurora Award, Goodreads Award), Velvet Was the Night (finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Macavity Award), and her newest book, The Seventh Veil of Salome, which was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for August 2024. Mexican by birth, Canadian by inclination. Cachanilla and Canuck, originally from Baja California, Silvia now resides in Vancouver. She has an MA in Science and Technology Studies from the University of British Columbia. Interviewer Michelle Lizet Flores is a graduate of the FSU and NYU creative writing programs. She currently works as a Creative Writing Instructor at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and co-hosts the What's in a Verse Poetry Open Mic at Rain Dogs. Publications include The NCTE English Journal, Salt Hill Journal, and The Talon Review. A finalist for the Juan Felipe Herrera Award for Poetry, she wrote the chapbooks Cuentos from the Swamp and Memoria, and the picture book, Carlito the Bat Learns to Trick or Treat. Her short fiction is in the anthology, Places We Build in the Universe. Invasive Species, her first full-length collection of poetry, is currently available from Finishing Line Press. It's our 150th episode! Very fittingly, it's a book club episode, which is the entire reason this podcast exists. In this episode, we're talking about Jette's pick, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and we loved reading more of Moreno-Garcia's work. Show NotesWe can't believe we've recorded 150 episodes of book content! Of those episodes, 38 have been book club discussions. That's...a lot of books. And somehow our TBRs are still threatening to topple over. It was way back in Episode 59 that we talked about Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This book is loosely based on The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells, which was published in 1896. The film of the same name starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer came out in 1996. Our next episode is another instalment of Page to Screen and we'll be discussing Under the Bridge by Rebecca Godfrey and the series adaptation of the same title. Our next book club pick is Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo. Other Books MentionedBy Silvia Moreno-Garcia — Silver Nitrate, Certain Dark Things, Velvet Was the Night, The Seventh Veil of SalomeBy H.G. https://notesonfilm1.com/2023/11/01/thinking-aloud-about-film-the-witchs-mirror-chano-urueta-mexico1962/ The Witch's Mirror/ El Espejo de la bruja (Chano Urueta, Mexico, 1962) is an immensely entertaining film that is being screened on MUBI as part of their ‘Spectacle Every Day: The Many Seasons of Mexican Cinema' series. There are claims that it is a ‘uniquely Mexican Gothic' but we don't quite agree. Indeed, in the podcast we relate it to Rebecca, Frankenstein, Eyes Without a Face, The Skin I Live In, The Beast With Five Fingers and other well-known films it was clearly influenced by or itself influenced. It is a derivative if visually inventive film, with a director who has an eye for composition, who keeps the camera moving, tells the story at a clip, and who knows how to make the most out of roughly a cast of four performers doing their outmost in about three sets. It's a considerable achievement in its own terms and great fun to see though those looking for depth will be disappointed.

Should we be afraid of fungus? with Dr. Leslie Holland

From best-selling novels like "Mexican Gothic" to blockbuster media hits like "The Last of Us," it seems like everyone is buzzing about fungi these days. Think of it as your houseplant's weirder, spongier, and creepier cousin. Fungi have a significant role in decomposition, which adds to their eerie reputation. However, they can also serve as food, a recreational drug, a source of medicine, and even a multi-story residence if you happen to be a Smurf. As we delve deeper into the world of fungi, things get even stranger. Did you know that the largest organism on Earth is a fungus? Fungi can have thousands of different genders, and they reproduce and communicate in ways that we are just starting to comprehend. Yet, there are dedicated individuals attempting to unravel these mysteries. Meet Dr. Leslie Holland, a mycologist specializing in the study of fungi. She joined the University of Wisconsin's Department of Plant Pathology in 2020, where she focuses on researching how fungal diseases impact fruit crops. With a teaching schedule that most professors can only dream of, Dr. Holland is the perfect person to demystify the fascinating world of fungi. Join me for an enlightening conversation with her as we separate fact from fiction when it comes to these remarkable organisms. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Welcome back! This week the ladies reviewed "Mexican Gothic" by Silvia Moreno- Garcia. (Warning, this episode contains spoilers for the book.) In this book, a family of in-bread colonizers living in a mold laced haunted mushroom house in the Mexico City country side, try to hold main character Noemi, and her cousin, Catalina hostage in this creepy hellscape. The Doyle family, originally from England, planned to use the women's wombs as incubators. The goal?... An effort to diversify their incestuous gene pool, while simultaneously preserving the twisted patriarch's tainted bloodline in an effort to obtain immortality! Gross and weird! It's giving serious Lord Voldermort vibes!!! Of course Kat finds a way to slide in a Star Trek reference, and they also have a fundamental disagreement on what they would have done at the end of the book. Tune in to find out what had the ladies divided! *Dedication: To the listeners: * To our listeners always, to indigenous people all over the world and the Latinx community and finally Kat's late father, that dude Buster.
