Today's episode is brought to you by Incognito Mode. This week, Amanda, Reese, and Iman descend into one of the internet's strangest corners: The Cult of Gooning. Joined by journalist Daniel Kolitz (@daniel.kolitz), author of Harper's viral feature The Goon Squad, the gang explores the bizarre online world where pornography has evolved into a full blown fandom complete with its own language, rituals, Discord servers, and the pursuit of the mythical "goon state." From goon babble to goon caves, we're unpacking how irony, loneliness, porn culture, and the algorithm collided to create one of the internet's strangest subcultures. Is this just an extremely niche fetish or proof that men will invent literally anything except therapy? David Rothkopf and Joanna Coles unpack a weekend of political chaos that stretches from the collapsing Iran negotiations to the algae-filled disaster of Trump's reflecting pool renovation, exposing a presidency built on grift, dysfunction, and spectacle. As JD Vance is dispatched to Switzerland to negotiate an impossible peace deal, Trump's public undermining of his own vice president becomes a window into the increasingly fragile state of Trump's inner circle. David and Joanna dive into the bizarre Father's Day snub of Don Jr. vs Eric Trump and the mounting controversy surrounding Ivanka's Albanian ambitions. Rothkopf delivers one of his most blistering critiques yet, connecting failed foreign policy, a decaying reflecting pool, and an administration he sees as incapable of governing. The Book Review
Book Club: Let's Talk About 'Transcription,' by Ben Lerner

The Book Review

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2026 47:21

Ben Lerner's slender new novel, “Transcription,” is just 130 pages long, yet it cracks open some of our most colossal and enduring philosophical questions. The novel is told in three parts. We open with an unnamed narrator going to interview his mentor, Thomas — an acclaimed artist in his 90s who also happens to be the father of one of the narrator's friends, Max — for a magazine. Before the interview, however, the narrator's phone breaks and he has no way to record their conversation. Rather than reschedule, he proceeds with the interview and only pretends to record Thomas as they talk. The second section flashes to the future. Thomas has died, and the article that our narrator wrote has become enshrined as the final interview with the iconic artist. At a symposium in Madrid, the narrator confesses that his interview was reconstructed rather than transcribed — a revelation that dismays the other guests and infuriates Max. Then we flash again. In the final section, the narrator talks to Max, who discusses his own complicated relationship with Thomas and technology, including how the internet and other digital tools impacted his family during several crises. Through these scenes, “Transcription” asks a series of questions: How does technology mediate our lives? How does it bring us together or pull us apart? Is there a difference between what's real and what's true? It also becomes a potent and poignant study of fatherhood and what it means. On this episode, MJ Franklin discusses “Transcription” with fellow Book Review editors Gregory Cowles and Alexandra Jacobs. Other books mentioned in this episode: “Leaving the Atocha Station,” “10:04” and “The Topeka School,” by Ben Lerner “The Dance of Anger,” by Harriet Lerner “Reporting,” by Lillian Ross “Magic and Loss: The Internet as Art,” by Virginia Heffernan “In Love: A Memoir of Love and Loss,” by Amy Bloom “No One Here Is Talking About This,” by Patricia Lockwood “The Shallows” by Nicholas Carr “Universality,” by Natasha Brown “White Noise” and “The Body Artist,” by Don DeLillo “A Hunger Artist,” by Franz Kafka “A Visit From the Goon Squad,” by Jennifer Egan “Asymmetry,” by Lisa Halliday “Trust,” by Hernan Diaz “The Mezzanine” and “Vox,” by Nicholson Baker “Outline,” by Rachel Cusk The books of Virginia Woolf Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Eddie Terrell Parker, one of the two Black men tortured by former Rankin County Sheriff's deputies known as the "Goon Squad" in a January 2023 warrantless raid, became a symbol of a "FAFO" (fuck around and find out) incident following his recent arrest. After winning a $2.5 million civil settlement with Rankin County in May 2025—split with co-victim Michael Corey Jenkins—Parker was arrested on December 17, 2025, by Louisiana State Police during a traffic stop in Madison Parish. He faced multiple charges, including possession of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana while in possession of a firearm, as well as possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. Authorities alleged he was found with substantial amounts of drugs and at least one gun, with some charges potentially federal. Parker, a prior felon, is being held without bond in Madison Parish Jail. The incident highlights Parker's squandered second chance, as he went from civil rights victim and settlement recipient to facing serious drug and weapons charges shortly after receiving his payout.   darkhorsepressnow.com +2

In this segment, host Clay Edwards sarcastically mocks conspiracy theories from critics with "Goon Squad derangement syndrome," suggesting that Eddie Terrell Parker's methamphetamine possession arrest was a police setup. He quips that detractors likely claim authorities "sprinkled some meth on him" during the Louisiana traffic stop, dismissing the charges as fabricated. Edwards challenges racial stereotypes pushed on "black Twitter" and in comments, noting claims that meth is exclusively a "white trash" or "white devil's drug" and not used by Black people, while highlighting Parker's status as a modern civil rights icon turned alleged meth user. The bit ties into broader critiques of media narratives and victim portrayals in the Goon Squad case.

When Andrea Dettore-Murphy first moved to Rankin County, Mississippi, she didn't believe the stories she heard about how brutal the sheriff's department could be when pursuing suspected drug crimes. But in 2018, she learned the hard way that the rumors were true when a group of sheriff's deputies raided the home of her friend Rick Loveday and beat him relentlessly while she watched.  A few years later, Dettore-Murphy says deputies put her through another haunting incident with her friend Robert Grozier. Dettore-Murphy was just the latest in a long line of people who said they witnessed or experienced torture by a small group of deputies, some of whom called themselves the “Goon Squad.” For nearly two decades, the deputies roamed Rankin County at night, beating, tasing, and choking suspects in drug crimes until they admitted to buying or selling illegal substances. Their reign of terror continued unabated until 2023, when the deputies were finally exposed.“Rankin County has always been notorious,” says Garry Curro, one the Goon Squad's many alleged victims. “They don't follow the laws of the land. They make their own laws.”This week on Reveal, reporters Brian Howey and Nate Rosenfield with Mississippi Today and the New York Times investigate the Goon Squad, whose members have allegedly tortured at least 22 people since the early 2000s.  Support Reveal's journalism at Revealnews.org/donatenow Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to get the scoop on new episodes at Revealnews.org/newsletter Connect with us onBluesky, Facebook and Instagram Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Boom shakalaka boom! You've just locked into the most explosive, unfiltered, reality-radio rollercoaster in the game – The Clay Edwards Show! Episode 1,021 blasts off on this glorious Hump Day, July 16, 2025, with your host Clay Edwards unleashing two hours of pure adrenaline-fueled truth bombs, cultural takedowns, and local lore that'll have you laughing, raging, and rethinking everything. If you're craving a show that shoots from the hip, dives down rabbit holes, and calls out the absurdities of modern life without a shred of apology, this is your jam. We're talking over-the-top rants, fresh segments, and stories so wild they'll make your head spin. Strap in, free-range humans – this ain't your grandma's talk radio; it's a cultural crusade for the soul of America!   Kicking things off with Clay's signature flair, we dive straight into the evening vibes. Ever wondered why you're wasting nights on trash TV when you could be tuning into raw, interactive gold? Clay spills the beans on his nightly 8 PM live stream team-up with co-hosts Shawn and Lindsey – think uncensored debates, viewer-driven chaos, and yes, the occasional F-bomb (because real talk happens, folks). It's been pulling killer numbers, steering the ship with your comments, and hitting topics that daytime can't touch. No scripts, no filters – just pure engagement. If you've missed it, catch the replays on socials like @savejxn across platforms. Pro tip: It's fun, it's fiery, and it's way better than scripted drama.   But hold up – Clay's shaking things up this week with structured segments to wrangle the chaos. Enter the Local Roundup, your daily dose of Mississippi madness, complete with the coveted FAFO Championship of the Day (that's "F'ed Around and Found Out" for the uninitiated). We're starting hot with Jackson's top cop, Chief Joseph Wade, dropping a bombshell proposal: a citywide ski mask ordinance! Picture this: young dudes cruising on bikes, shirtless in South Jackson heat, faces hidden behind "shystie masks." Clay breaks it down – it's terrifying for business owners, a nightmare for surveillance, and a direct counter to JPD's facial recognition tech. Wade's seen it firsthand: masked figures strolling into stores like it's no big deal. But Clay's all in – "I'm about this!" He circles back to the cultural roots: pre-COVID, masks meant robbery; post-COVID, criminals exploited the fear, turning face coverings into getaway gear. And don't get him started on the backlash – cries of "racism" or constitutional violations? Clay calls BS: "Screw your freedom of expression – you look like an idiot, and in a civilized society, masks scream trouble." He unpacks the hypocrisy: from early COVID myths (Black folks can't get it? Enter Idris Elba) to liberal overreactions, it's all Democrat "death culture" biting back. Honest take: When Clay sees a young Black guy in a mask indoors (and yeah, he notes it's rarely anyone else), his hand's on his gun – "You're not scared of COVID; you're up to no good." Outdoors in 90+ degree Mississippi heat? Same vibe. This segment's a masterclass in no-holds-barred observation, blending humor, frustration, and a plea for common sense.   Segueing seamlessly, Clay ties in the hoodie epidemic – kids bundled up in summer swelter like it's a security blanket. "What is wrong with y'all?" he roars, sharing a social experiment from his Facebook post during last night's stream. Over 110 comments poured in: excuses from poor diets making kids "always cold" (nonsense, per Clay) to therapists claiming it feels "safe" amid absent parents (worst answer ever). Others nail it – concealed carry, weight loss attempts, or just hiding something shady. Clay's verdict: In 97-degree heat, a hoodie screams probable cause for a stop-and-frisk. "Sir, what are you trying to hide? Gun with a Glock switch? Pistol AR?" He contrasts it with cowboy boots and jeans – no threat there, no hand on the gun. Stereotypes? Earned, not given, shouts out to creator Antione Daniels for keeping it real. This rant spirals into personal quirks: Clay's a hot-natured beast, sleeping at 61 degrees with industrial fans blasting (DeWALT-level air movement, son!). It's hilarious, relatable, and a cultural gut-check on trends gone awry.   Technical hiccups hit mid-show – signal issues force a switch to backup, but Clay keeps the energy high, appreciating texts from listeners. No downtime here; he resets and rolls on. Shoutout to the Rankin County Sheriff's Office for a heroic escort: rushing a young couple from Leake County to the hospital after her water broke near Madden. "Another good deed by our law enforcement community!" Clay stands firm on supporting good cops while calling out the bad – he's hammered the Goon Squad saga in 27+ episodes, interviewing journalist Jerry Mitchell who took it national. But balance? Nah: "I don't owe Jackson equality. I talk what I want – no pandering." It's a raw defense of his independence: exposing dope in Rankin to keep it safe, not to score points.   In the FAFO spotlight, a massive drug bust crowns our champion: 42-year-old William Daniel Rogers from Brandon, nabbed in a multi-agency sting. Traffic stop uncovers 122 fentanyl pills; home raid reveals a narco treasure trove – 3.6 pounds of marijuana, 47 pounds of mushrooms, 152 M30 fentanyl pills, Oxy, Xanax, coke, heroin, meth, THC oils, vapes, gummies, jello shots, plus 19 firearms and 4 unregistered homemade suppressors. "You don't ride this dirty in Rankin and not win FAFO!" Clay quips, noting federal charges looming on those suppressors (echoing a recent guest chat). Bond at $100K, more charges pending – trace that fentanyl to deaths? Game over. It's a win for curbing overdose epidemics, with Clay warning: Fentanyl's this admin's hill to die on; Rankin ain't playing.   Hour two ramps up with Around the State – wild tales from Mississippi's underbelly. First, a chaotic series in Adams County: Video surfaces of four white guys assaulting Black bicyclist Reginald Butler on a Deerfield Road bridge. It starts with a cigarette ask turning ugly (Clay questions motive – "Hard to believe it's that simple"). Butler flees, grabs a gun, returns; second clash ends with him shooting Cameron Talton (involved in the first fight), who gets airlifted. Butler bonds out; two others (including 21-year-old Houston Lee Priddy and a 16-year-old) face aggravated assault and conspiracy. Sheriff's probing hate crime angles with MBI/FBI. Clay unpacks: Self-defense? Nah – leaving and returning kills that claim. Race-baiting incoming (Ben Crump vibes), but questions abound: Why the bridge? Bathing suits? Motive? "Brace for impact – knowledge up!"   Youth violence hits next: Columbia cops seize a Glock switch (turns semi-auto to full-auto) from an underage teen in a stolen-gun traffic stop. Chief Fortenberry laments: "We're losing our youth – kids have more firepower than us!" Illegal under new state law, it's a call to action against escalating threats.   Wrapping with national intrigue: Epstein files drama. Clay dissects why Trump, Kash Patel, Dan Bongino, and Pam Bondi get heat – promises of declassification clash with hesitance over "phony stuff" from crooked intel (Russia hoax crew). Trump's point: Lists could ruin innocents. But Clay pushes: Release and investigate! Shoutouts to Marjorie Taylor Greene and Benny Johnson for demanding transparency despite risks. "Hold leaders accountable – that's America!"   Episode 1,021 is Clay at his peak: Over 1,000 shows of chaos refined into segments, rants that assault sensibilities, and stories that demand action. From mask bans to massive busts, hoodies to hate crimes, it's a hump-day hurricane of honesty. Missed the live energy? Replay now – and join the 8 PM stream for more uncensored fire. Clay Edwards: Fighting cancel culture, one truth bomb at a time. Boom goes the dynamite!

Clay unleashes a fiery defense of his selective coverage on Rankin County scandals, blasting critics who accuse him of ignoring the bad while praising the good. "I've stood by the Sheriff's Office through the crap, but we've hammered the Goon Squad in no less than 27 full episodes – interviewed Jerry Mitchell, beat that drum louder than anyone!" he roars. But haters? Forget 'em: "You can't make 'em happy, so I don't try. I talk what I want – dope busts in Rankin? Hell yeah, to keep it safe. I don't owe Jackson 'balance' or racial equality scales. If I'm exposing fentanyl hauls, it's 'cause I want Rankin clean, not pandering. I didn't flee one hellhole for another!" It's raw independence: Clay picks topics to fight crime, award FAFOs, and preserve his turf, mutual friends be damned. No apologies – just unfiltered Clay owning the narrative!

Mental Health Crisis in Rankin County – The Clay Edwards Show, Episode 1,010   I'm diving headfirst into what I'm calling a full-blown mental health crisis in Rankin County, Mississippi, and I'm dubbing it “Goon Squad Derangement Syndrome.” This isn't just about isolated incidents—it's a pattern of erratic, unhinged behavior that I see spiraling out of control, tied to the fallout from the infamous “Goon Squad” case where deputies tortured two Black men in 2023. I'm talking about folks in Rankin County acting like they're auditioning for chaos, from blowing whistles and dressing like Foot Locker employees to getting arrested multiple times in a single day. I'm pointing fingers at a few specific individuals—one I believe is convinced he was a victim of the Goon Squad, another who seems disappointed he wasn't, and a third who's got the nerve to call me a snitch while playing whistleblower himself.   This “Goon Squad Derangement Syndrome” has people so obsessed with the idea of police brutality that I think they're trying to provoke it, almost like they're chasing fame or a lawsuit by willing confrontations into existence. It's June, Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, and I'm sounding the alarm: these men are in crisis, and their loved ones need to stop enabling them. I'm urging families to push for serious help—check these guys into a facility like St. Dominic's or Whitfield for evaluation. I'm dealing with this mess myself, having pressed charges against one of these clowns, and I'm done ignoring their antics. This syndrome is real, it's destructive, and it's tearing at Rankin County's fabric, fueled by the Goon Squad's shadow.
