Field Sketches is a personal film that grew from Director/Writer/Producer Carl Bessai's filmmaking journey.  After a life of making films, what matters most to a person?  Carl, a long-time resident of Toronto now based in Vancouver, BC, sharing time between Toronto and Los Angeles, is thrilled to bring his twentieth film to Toronto.   Nine of Carl's feature films have screened at TIFF, including Johnny, Lola, Emile, Unnatural & Accidental, Normal, Mothers & Daughters, Cole, Repeaters and Sisters & Brothers.  Former TIFF programmer Steve Gravestock will be the talk-back host for the Q&A after the film. Field Sketches Toronto Theatrical Premiere at the Revue Cinema will screen on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025, at 6:45 PM with the cast and director in attendance. Peter (Vincent Gale), a middle-aged architect whose business and personal life are imploding, has been trying to return to his creative roots as an architect.  His successful partnership with his college friend Bruce (David Cubitt) has left him feeling like he can no longer find the art in his creative practice.  With nothing left to hold him in the city, Peter decides to move to his family farm and spend the winter in Saskatchewan. He soon discovers that pioneer life is much more than he bargained for.  And the silence and loneliness play tricks on his imagination. Carl Bessai is a writer/director/producer/cinematographer based in Vancouver, BC, Toronto and Los Angeles, California. His feature films have appeared in numerous festivals, including Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto, have been released worldwide, and have won numerous critics' prizes, jury prizes, and film awards. He has directed some of the world's leading acting talent, including Sir Ian McKellen (Emile, Lord of the Rings, X-Men), Carrie Ann Moss (Normal, The Matrix Films), Bruce Greenwood (Rehearsal, Star Trek), Tantoo Cardinal (Mothers&Daughters, Dances with Wolves), and Bruce Dern (The Lears, Nebraska).   Vincent Gale is known for his work on Van Helsing, X-Men Evolution, Watson, The Dragon Prince, Midnight Mass, Snowpiercer and Supernatural.      Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

You can find Rebecca Schinsky on IG @rebeccaschinsky and Book Riot at www.bookriot.com   In this week's episode, we chat with Rebecca Schinsky, who is chief of staff for Riot New Media Group and co-host of The Book Riot podcast. Book Riot is the largest independent editorial book site in North America and book lovers can find all kinds of interesting stuff there, such as numerous podcasts, newsletters, and articles about different genres.   I have long been a listener of this podcast and love it because ….I am a book nerd through and through and this podcast gives me the inside look at the world of publishing.  If you enjoy learning about trends and want the inside scoop about how and why certain books make it to your eyeballs or just want to have your pulse on bookish news, this podcast is for you.  Rebecca talks to us about what book trends have had the biggest impact on the industry over the last 15 years, what other goodies you can find at Book Riot.com, and why social media flattens the book options we see in our feeds.   And this week for our book recommendations section, we put on our 10 gallon hats and our chaps because we're talking about westerns. Westerns became popular in the late 1800s and derived from the dime novels of the mid-19th century. Many of these stories were later turned into movies in the 1940s and 1950s, which is probably the way most people had exposure to them. Films like High Noon and Shane were based on western stories. There was a second resurgence of western films based on novels between the 1970s-90s such as The Unforgiven and The Outlaw Josey Wales. We offer westerns that are in the graphic novel genre, the horror genre, literary fiction, and middle grade.   Books Mentioned in this Episode:   1- The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray   2- The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict   3- Harlem Rhapsody by Victoria Christopher Murray   4- Life in Three Dimensions by Shigehiro Oishi    5- Back After This by Linda Holmes   6- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte   7- Glass Town: The Imaginary World of the Brontes by Isabel Greenberg   8- The Helsinki Affair by Anna Pitoniak   9- Red Widow by Alma Katsu   10- A Five Star Read Recommended by Fellow Book Lover Beth @a_vet_nurse_and_her_books - The Game by Danny Dagan   11- Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry   12- True Grit by Charles Portis   13- The Searchers by Alan LeMay   14- The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend by Glenn Frankel   15- Lone Women by Victor LaValle   16- Coyote Doggirl by Lisa Hanawalter   17- Four Treasures of the Sky by Jenny Tinghui Zhang   18- Whiskey When We're Dry by John Larison   19- The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt   20- Pony by RJ Palacio   Media mentioned--   1- Heretic (Max, 2024)   2- Longlegs (Hulu, 2024)   3- True Grit (2010)   4- Deadwood (Max, 2004-2006)   5- The Searchers (1956)   6- The Sisters Brothers (2018)   Bella Da Costa Greene Exhibit in NYC -  https://www.themorgan.org/exhibitions/belle-da-costa-greene

Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Oscar nominee, Juliette Welfling about Jacques Audiard's film, Emilia Perez, currently on Netflix. Juliette's been on Art of the Cut before another of Audiard's films, The Sisters Brothers. Her other films include The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for which she was nominated for an Oscar for Best Editing. She also edited the films: Rust and Bone, A Prophet, The Past, Free State of Jones and Ocean's Eight, The discussion today is about - among other things - structuring a film for character, not allowing an editor's cut to go too long, and working with a naked director - metaphorically. On today's episode – a crime thriller? A musical? A coming-out drama? Emilia Pérez, the new film from famed French auteur Jacques Audiard, is all of the above and somehow none of these things at all. It really is hard to understate the disorientating excess and madness of this somewhat opinion-splitting new Netflix awards contender, which is tipped for Oscar glory after picking up the jury prize at Cannes earlier this year. Jacques is, of course, the writer-director of works like A Prophet, Rust and Bone, See How They Fall, The Beat That My Heart Skipped and The Sisters Brothers, a masterful western from 2018. But Emilia Pérez is like none of those films. It's a film that sees Jacques – who, at seventy-two years young, could be making victory-lap movies at this stage in his career – swinging for the fences. The movie follows Rita, a criminal defence lawyer played by Zoe Saldaña, who is kidnapped and brought before someone terrifying – Manitas Del Monte, one of Mexico's most feared cartel bosses, played by Karla Sofía Gascón. Manitas has something to ask of Rita. This crime lord – responsible for such brutal bloodshed, in a country blighted by thousands of cartel-related missing persons – wishes to fake their death and transition gender. And to do so, they need Rita's help. Reborn as Emilia Perez, this character embarks on a new life that she finds, over the course of the movie, had to untangle from what came before.Al caught up with Jacques a few days after the film's release on Netflix to break down the script, with a little help from his translator, Nicholas Elliott. Get ready to learn about the version of Emilia Pérez in which the character of Rita was a man, and in which a romance blossomed between the lawyer and the eponymous former crime lord. You'll hear about why Jacques is so drawn to characters attempting to reinvent themselves in his work, and there's also a breakdown of the story's dramatic climax – an ending that asks complicated questions of the audience, questions with no easy answers. Brad and Jake dive into the cinematic highlights of 2018. They kick off with "mid90s," Jonah Hill's directorial debut that vividly brings to life the raw skateboarding scene of 1990s Los Angeles through the eyes of a troubled boy. The journey continues with "Hereditary," Ari Aster's haunting horror film that masterfully intertwines family drama with spine-tingling terror. Brad and Jake dissect these distinct films, wondering what will become of Hill's directing career, and whether Aster's film might be better watched through a more realistic lens than a supernatural one.

Ep. 113: Jacques Audiard on Paris, 13th District Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. Paris, 13th District is the latest movie from Jacques Audiard, a writer-director whose work has spanned many genres, from The Beat That My Heart Skipped to Rust and Bone to The Sisters Brothers. Paris 13th District is Audiard's unabashed look at a younger generation in love, and it starts by focusing on a woman, Emilie (Lucie Zhang) and her roommate, briefly turned lover, Camille (Makita Samba). But it gradually shifts to the story of Nora, a newcomer to Paris played by Noémie Merlant, who gets mixed up literally with a cam girl named Amber Sweet. Its soulful and beautiful moments have a way of sneaking up on you with their intensity and then commanding your attention. I talked with Audiard about making the movie (which adapts a graphic novel by Adrian Tomine). He spoke with the help of a translator and in a brief span of time had a lot of illuminating things to say.
