With members spread across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, New England quintet Arms Like Roses play a blend of emo, indie rock, and post-hardcore that alternates between lush beauty and cathartic harshness just like the seasons do in the region they call home. With a sound harkening back to the ‘90s and early 2000s influenced by acts like Sunny Day Real Estate, mewithoutYou, Circa Survive, and Tigers Jaw, ALR made their debut in 2021 with the EP “Get Some Sleep”; they followed it up the next year with their Chris Teti (TWIABP)-produced first LP “Blooming”, which saw the band complete several east coast and Midwest tours and receive praise from press outlets like No Echo and The Alternative. Send us a Text Message.Coheed and Cambria is a progressive rock band originating from Nyack, New York, known for their unique blend of intricate instrumentation, fantastical storytelling, and dynamic vocal performances. Formed in 1995, the band consists of Claudio Sanchez (vocals, guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Josh Eppard (drums), and Zach Cooper (bass). At the core of Coheed and Cambria's discography lies "The Amory Wars," a science fiction saga created by frontman Claudio Sanchez, which serves as the conceptual basis for much of their music. The narrative follows the epic journey of characters Coheed and Cambria Kilgannon as they navigate through a universe plagued by war, betrayal, and cosmic forces. Each album released by the band corresponds to a chapter in this overarching story, creating a cohesive and immersive experience for listeners.Musically, Coheed and Cambria's sound is characterized by intricate guitar riffs, soaring vocal melodies, and complex rhythmic patterns. Drawing inspiration from progressive rock, punk, metal, and alternative rock, their music seamlessly blends together elements of various genres to create a distinctive sonic landscape. Sanchez's powerful vocals, often compared to Geddy Lee of Rush, are complemented by Stever's and Cooper's dynamic guitar work and Eppard's precise drumming, resulting in a sound that is both grandiose and emotionally resonant. The band's breakout album, "The Second Stage Turbine Blade," released in 2002, garnered widespread acclaim for its ambitious storytelling and musical craftsmanship. Subsequent albums such as "In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3" and "Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" further solidified Coheed and Cambria's reputation as one of the most innovative and influential bands in modern rock.Overall, Coheed and Cambria's impact on the music industry extends beyond their innovative approach to rock music; they have created a rich and immersive universe that resonates deeply with fans, solidifying their place as pioneers of modern progressive rock.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------L.S. Their inaugural album, "Past Lives," dropped on November 11, 2022, introducing singles like "Permanent Rebellion," "2022," and "Bombsquad." Following their UK tour debut in January 2023, they embarked on their first US tour in July. Born during the pandemic, the group initially convened during rehearsals for Thursday's 2020 holiday livestream, initially operating under the moniker "Dad Bods." Despite their individual recordings, the ensemble's lineup remained undisclosed until Rule sent Green the instrumental tracks. The emergence of this post-hardcore/emo ensemble first surfaced with their inclusion on Riot Fest's May 2022 poster. Their Riot Fest debut showcased six tracks from "Past Lives." Super excited to announce new guest, Alex Stanilla, to The Story! The protagonists of ALEX STANILLA's songs live at the intersection of fact and fiction, the push and pull between introspective honesty and rich character study. “I'm really inspired by film,” the Lebanon, PA-based singer-songwriter says. “My lyrical style tends to take an impressionistic view of films, with the subtext of watching it through a different lens and using it to interpret my life.”Stanilla's life has seen its fair share of musical milestones (for starters, he performed at Carnegie Hall as a 10-year-old violinist) but now his latest act puts his cinematic songwriting style – and film degree – on full display. His self-released single “Favorite Song” is awash in vibrant indie-rock groove and meditative poise, ruminating on the 1979 musical drama All That Jazz and its semi-autobiographical look at the life of Bob Fosse. It's rough-around-the-edges passion seeded with grand ambitions, richly intimate soul-searching storytelling that still manages to resonate on a universal level. There's a refreshing level of self-awareness in Stanilla's songs, from his 2017 LP/mixtape Qualia (later reissued in 2019) to a prolific 2020-2021 singles series. And while some minor details have at times been changed to protect the guilty – namely himself – an air of authenticity still permeates every note of his music. He plays all of those notes himself, on every instrument, equally inspired by the tenderness and inward turmoil of Elliott Smith, the eccentricity of synthy electro-pop, and the energy of underground bands like Chiodos, Circa Survive, and Dance Gavin Dance that influenced his early years.Find The Story Podcast here: coryrosenproductions.com/podcastsSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-story/donations

GUEST BIO Summer Swee-Singh is an AAPI studio/event/touring pianist and keyboardist, string and orchestral arranger, composer, music director, string contractor, backing vocalist, and music educator. Summer graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Legal Studies and a Music Minor. After graduating, she worked full-time at Jones Day San Francisco, a law firm, as their Recruiting and HR Assistant and was planning on applying to law schools when she decided to take a chance on her passion—music. She cold-called her way into her first piano residencies, as she had no music industry connections when she first transitioned to a music career, and her unique piano and string arrangements that she posted to social media led to her first touring experience ever with the band Circa Survive. Now Summer's notable studio and live performance credits include Bebe Rexha, KSHMR, Chon, Circa Survive, Naia Izumi, Roddy Ricch, Anthony Green, Chief Keef, Keiynan Lonsdale, Until the Ribbon Breaks, Gashi, Thunder Jackson, Mothe, Psychic Barber, and Alexandra Shipp. Summer also founded and runs the blog AAPI Musicians and its corresponding Instagram which spotlight established AAPI music creators and touring pros. Summer Swee-Singh Insta | TikTok | Web DEFINITIONS Patriarchy is a social system in which positions of dominance and privilege are primarily held by men. TAKEAWAYS Statistically, if you cold-call enough potential clients, you're bound to get a few good leads. The first gig is the hardest to land, but each gig opens doors to more opportunities. So get those first few and blow their socks off. Women in the music industry are often assumed to be less competent than men before they even play the first note. Their looks are also micromanaged while men rarely get any comments on their outfits. If you ever find yourself questioning a woman's abilities, or criticizing her outfit in your head, stop yourself and ask - would I ask these same questions if she was my white male buddy? If not, congratulations, you have just recognized a subconscious bias that you now have the power to dismantle in your own life. Women can also be sexist toward other women and often are, so we need to examine ourselves too and choose to uplift each other instead. Lack of transparency in auditions causes many like Summer to waste their time on try outs that were never going to land them anything because of their race, ethnicity, or gender. A career in music isn't limited to starving musician or Beyonce level fame. There is a middle class where you can be successful and financially stable, without being a household name. Careers don't have to be static. If you want your kids to learn an instrument, let them play music they love. This is a REPOST of Episode 100. Sunny Day Real Estate was an American rock band from Seattle, Washington. They were one of the early emo bands and helped establish the genre. In 1994, the band released their debut album Diary on Sub Pop Records to critical acclaim. However, shortly after releasing their second album LP2, the band broke up, with members Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith joining Foo Fighters and Jeremy Enigk embarking on a solo career. In 1997, they regrouped long enough to record two more studio albums and a live album but ultimately disbanded once again in 2001. The band reunited again in 2009. Bassist Nate Mendel, who chose to remain with Foo Fighters during the previous reunion in 1997, took part in this reunion. In 2014 the band released one song from those sessions, "Lipton Witch," on a split 7" vinyl with Circa Survive on Record Store Day. I got William on the Skype and this is what we talk about: My sunny day tattoo story What drumming has done to him physically What was his scene How the band got together Diary's artwork Breaking up right when they were taking off Red Elephant Trying to find inspiration to make music again Recording Rising Tide Working through anxiety Their unreleased album And a ton more Check out William's band, Assertion Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. Today's episode is an interview with Anthony Green! If you're unfamiliar, Anthony's been a lifer of post-hardcore and underground rock in general for over 20 years, having fronted the bands Circa Survive, Saosin, The Sound of Animals Fighting, and more, and he remains very busy. He's fresh off releasing his excellent new solo album Boom. Done., Circa Survive recently put out two great new EPs, Saosin have upcoming shows (and new music in the works!), and The Sound of Animals Fighting are plotting their return too. We talked about almost everything Anthony's been up to lately, and he also reflected on his early days, talked about some early influences, and looked at the way his own classic material has influenced new bands like SeeYouSpaceCowboy (who recently put out a Saosin cover). He also talked about writing lyrics that open up about mental health, and the ways even major artists like Kendrick Lamar are doing that, and he talked about the idea of achieving longevity as an artist, and discussed some other artists who have done so, like Deftones and (the just-broken-up) mewithoutYou. And just days after we recorded this episode, the news broke that Anthony's fronting the new supergroup L.S. Dunes, which also features members of Thursday, My Chemical Romance, and Coheed & Cambria.

Jordan Gooch is a daughter, a sister, and a dog mom.We met in the service industry around a decade and change ago back when I was a first-time new dad and she was feeling her way through the post-high-school/early-college years. We would -- on occasion -- cross paths behind the restaurant and swap stories about life and music over cigarettes, so I knew that once I got this project off the ground, she would be a good candidate for an episode. It took a handful of tries to get Jordan in the room, but from jump street, her selection for what wound up being episode #19 was Circa Survive's On Letting Go.Spiders and tornadoes kept her up most of the night before we recorded, but she rallied, showed up, and did a C- job of pretending like she wasn't going to fall asleep across the duration of our chat. So, shouts out to her, and shouts out to you if you happen to give our conversation a listen or a view. It's time for WASTOIDS With…Laura Jane Grace. She's created some of the most strident punk music of the last couple of decades, both as a solo artist and leader of Against Me! She's currently embarked on the Carousel Tour, playing collaborative sets with Anthony Green of Circa Survive and Tim Kasher of Cursive, along with special guests Mikey Erg, Home Is Where, and Oceanator on select dates. Here in AZ, we're psyched to catch the show at the Crescent Ballroom on May 20.Laura kept real busy during the pandemic, and was a frequent DJ on Vans Channel 66, where she exclusively played music released post-2020. She also put out a killer EP, At War With The Silverfish, and was recently elected as a governor of the Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy—that's the GRAMMYs. Laura sat down with Brandon Michel to chat about the challenges of touring in 2022, the 15th anniversary of Against Me!'s landmark album New Wave, what she's been listening to, and get into her habits, which include running, drinking absurd amounts of coffee, and dominating foosball tables nationwide. If you liked this chat, please subscribe to the WASTOIDS audio feed wherever you get podcasts—you can leave a rating and a review while you're at it. This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 5, The Box, which originally aired on October 15, 2013 and was written by Rob Rosell and directed by Andrew Fleming. Here's a quick recap of the episode:This episode reveals what Nick (... and Jess and Winston) would do with the money he inherits after his Dad's death. Schmidt is still soul searching after losing Cece and Elizabeth and wonders if he's a good person. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Band Posters - In Nick's bedroom there are a number of band posters we saw this episode: The Black KeysCirca SurviveWe didn't talk about, but also saw the following posters:Coachella 2010 Lineup Poster - Founded in 1999, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual festival held east of Los Angeles in Indio, California. B38 by Pass Kontrol Poster - Pass Kontrol is an “art collective” community of friends who dedicated its energetic album, B38, to one of the greatest buslines that runs from Ridgewood to Downtown Brooklyn, NYC. Heathcliff - When Schmidt is leaving the bar with Nick, the “pickled” bar patron calls him Heathcliff. Additional Pop Culture References such as:YOLO - When Schmidt was wreaking havoc in the school, he yelled “YOLO” when he was being carried out. "YOLO" is an acronym for "you only live once" that became popular internet slang in 2012. The concept of “YOLO” is to live life to its fullest extent. This episode we discuss who is Most Likely To visit someone in the hospital after calling 911 for them, make a powerpoint presentation to get money back from a friend, help someone pay their bills, and spend money on quirky trivial things, like mall photos. We also cover Nick and Schmidt at the bar as our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we mention how Schmidt described Elizabeth as “regular” and Nick spoke about how “girls don't listen” and what he said men want. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we highlight Nick's note about equality and not doing jury duty or paying his taxes until gay marriage was legal everywhere, which it now is in the U.S.A. We also explore the careers of Jillian Aremenante (Eileen) and Kimrie Lewis (Keysha), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously discussed in S2E17), Jon Lovitz (Rabbi Feiglin), Derek Waters (Mike), Connor Rosen (Boy), James Wellington (Gordon), David Hutchison (Rabbi Julio), and Marty Ingels (Pickled Patron). We also discuss the continuation of baby animals on Jess's checks and how the song in the background when Nick is drinking at the bar is a She & Him song (which Zooey Deschanel is a part of). Neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Tango / Waltz - Nick mentions both of these classical dances when angrily ranting to Jess that he can also try to change her. These dances are often confused with each other; the Waltz is a ballroom dance from the 18th century, while the Tango is a variation of the Flamenco style of dance only dating back to the 1880s. The main difference between the two is the speed at which the dance is conducted.Shema Yisrael - When Schmidt saves the bike messenger he exclaims that they should rejoice in song and begins singing Shema Yisrael, which is a Jewish prayer. This prayer is typically part of a twice daily recitation and is typically taught to children to be said before sleeping. It has also been referenced and used in other TV shows as the last words for the character. This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Winston and Kelly rated this episode a 7.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 6!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

"My name is Andrew, I am an artist and designer who is a product of too many comic books, a love for the eccentric, and an early exposure to surrealist art that permanently altered how I see the world. I've lived in the city, the beach, and the Midwest, but nothing feels more like home than my studio. Formally trained in the fine arts, I draw inspiration from textile patterns, traditional techniques, forgotten masters, exploring new mediums, and a constant need to change. A love for fine art, fashion, and beautiful design has fueled the need for a new chapter in my life as I build a unique and non-linear path forward. I currently live in Columbus, Ohio and divide my time between biking, hunting for the perfect pizza, constructing my own lifestyle brand (a dream since middle school,) painting personal works and commissions, and creating unexpected illustrations and designs for clients such as; Tigertree, Cubshrub, Circa Survive, Mott CPAs, and more." https://mcnamaraart.com/work
On today's edition of Flashback Fridays, the 21st installment if my math is correct, I wanted to highlight a record from 2020. Last year. A crazy year for so many. The pandemic year. But there were some silver linings that came along with the year 2020, and one of them is the fact that a lot of fantastic music was released in the year 2020. There were so many great releases from the year, that it honestly was difficult choosing an album to highlight. A good problem to have I suppose. The album that I chose is an album by the band Be Well. Be Well is an American hardcore punk band, formed in 2019 in Baltimore, Maryland. The group was formed by members of various bands including Bane, Only Crime, Darkest Hour, Fairweather, Ashes, Battery, Olympia, Beasts of No Nation, and Converge.[1] The group signed to Equal Vision Records in December 2019[2] and released its debut album, The Weight and the Cost, through the label in August 2020. The singer is the legendary Brian McTernan. Brian is also a record producer. McTernan operates a studio called Salad Days in Baltimore, named after the Minor Threat song of the same name, and has produced albums for a number of notable artists, including Thrice, Circa Survive, Turnstile, and Hot Water Music. The lyrics on this Be Well record are phenomenal. Raw, brutal, and honest. I love this record. I can't wait to hear their next record.
