Today we are re-sharing our Business Breakdown from September 2021 on Axie Infinity and its creator, Sky Mavis. Sky Mavis is the company behind the NFT-based game, Axie Infinity. Built by a team with a long history in gaming, Axie Infinity was launched in 2018 with the idea that a blockchain-based “play-to-earn” model could create more aligned incentives between game creators and game players long-term. Axie is one of the most incredible examples of speed-to-scale I've seen, with the game reporting $100,000 of revenue in January, over $190,000,000 of revenue in July, and over $360,000,000 in August. In this breakdown, we cover the basics of Axie and how gameplay is similar to classics such as Pokemon. We dive into the economic model, how Sky Mavis generates revenue, how players earn money, and how this is all enabled by the blockchain. We discuss the importance of gameplay vs. the economic ecosystem and examine the sustainability of Axie from various angles. To help break down Sky Mavis, Patrick O'Shaughnessy is joined by Aleksander Larsen, co-founder of Sky Mavis, and Stephen McKeon, Partner at Collab+Currency, an early investor in Sky Mavis. I've dedicated most of the last year of my life to asking these two questions: How did we get here? Where are we going? Believe it or not, one of the most frequent question I get is: How did you get here? It seems many of you are curious as to how and why I started the show and exactly what is the nature of my relationship with Yelp. Today I tackle those questions and many more with the help of Stephen McKeon, one of the guys from Yelp that helped make this show happen. ________________________________ Sign Up for Our Weekly Newsletter Book time on Josh's personal calendar We have a lot more content coming your way! Stephen is also a finance professor at the University of Oregon and one of the sharpest thinkers in the security token space. Previously, Stephen joined Derek on Security Token Stories Episode #2 to chat about his “Security Token Thesis” paper and how security tokens will dominate previous methods of reporting and trading ownership through a number of killer features that security tokens and distributed ledgers enable. In this conversation, Stephen and Derek build on that episode by taking a look back at the security token industry in 2019, trends that Collaborative Fund is seeing in the decentralized finance and DAO spaces, and how all these new areas of interest may intersect with security tokens and traditional finance in 2020 and beyond.

Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin. Stephen McKeon joined us to talk about security tokens. As the chief strategy advisor for Security Token Academy, he is an expert in the issuance of security tokens. Stephen explains that security tokens are digital securities, built on blockchain technology. The advantages of security tokens include the ability to trade them more efficiently than traditional securities because they incorporate security, including a universally accepted record of ownership such that even after lots of trading, everyone agrees on who owns the securties. The market around security tokens really only began to develop about two years ago but it is accelerating quickly now as the use case for blockchain technology for trading securities really works. This episode starts with the time value of money and quickly becomes an exploration of the time value of everything. As Professor Stephen McKeon takes us from his past working at a winery, to starting a drone company, and always choosing a happy versus wealthy life, the episode bounces between balances sheets and the purpose of life--and how the basics of all those scary words like stocks, bonds, and annuities aren’t so scary. McKeon uses some wonderful examples to illustrate the concept of investing, including how to invest in outer space asteroid mining, judging a company by how risky the CEO is (hint: see if the CEO has pilot’s license), and of course, cryptocurrencies--something that keeps getting him in the news constantly. As always, host Troy Campbell and editor Alec Cowan drop in some additional research and stories. The episode grows in complexity and subject matter as it progresses, but everything is always sewn together by the simple concept that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow.
