While DeFi's ultimate goal is to provide an alternative for TradFi, blockchain gaming caters to retail masses, onboarding millions of users to crypto through incentives and fun gameplay. The greatest success story in Web3 gaming thus far has been, without a doubt, Axie Infinity. Apart from creating an engaged community whose early adopters also experienced rags-to-riches stories, it kickstarted an entire movement around play-to-earn gaming. Many have tried copying it, yet most of them failed. Axie Infinity managed to design a sustainable economy that combined NFTs and fungible tokens. The result was the first gamified crypto mining event, at scale. In order to accommodate such a massive demand, in a time when L2 rollups were still in R&D, Sky Mavis founded Ronin, a gaming-oriented Ethereum sidechain. The community that formed around Axie Infinity created a tremendous network effect, solidifying Ronin's PMF as a gaming powerhouse. Before long, many up-and-coming titles migrated to Ronin, and the growth effects in all their key metrics (i.e. DAUs, transactions, revenue, etc.) further fuelled the flywheel.Topics covered in this episode:Jeff's backgroundCryptokittiesJoining Axie Infinity and how it evolvedMonetizing Axie's economyThe recipe for successful blockchain gamesBuilding Ronin, the gaming L1On-chain vs. off-chain game elementsCommunity buildingRonin's economy & composabilityMost suitable gaming genre for Web3AI x gamingCrypto gaming investmentsRonin's current state and future roadmapAxie's upcoming MMOEpisode links:Jeff Zirlin on XAxie Infinity on XRonin on XSky Mavis on XSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. In this episode, host Niko Vuori speaks with Jeff Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis and the play-to-earn OG, Axie Infinity, about the significant developments in the web3 gaming space, particularly the transition of the Ronin blockchain to a permissionless model. They discuss Jeff's background and journey into web3, the origin story and wild ride of Axie Infinity, the evolution of the Ronin blockchain, the introduction of the Ronin Developer Console, and the impressive growth metrics of the Ronin ecosystem. The conversation touches on the current state of the Axie Infinity economy and the future of third-party gaming projects on the Ronin chain. We also explore the balance between quality and openness in game development, the incentives for developers, and the potential for future growth as more games launch on the Ronin network. We'd also like to thank TikTok for making this episode possible. In a dynamic gaming market where a majority of games fail within three years, TikTok has become a critical partner in helping games achieve long-term player retention and substantial revenue growth. For Jeff Zirlin, aka Jiho, the third time was the charm to get into Web3. It could have been in the early days of Bitcoin when his friends started a crypto fund, or it could have been in the days of the Cypriot financial crisis when Jiho wanted to look into currencies that sovereign powers could not overtake. But what really catapulted Jiho's interest in the Web3 space was CryptoKitties which he felt was an intersection of his passions and hobbies. In this episode of Web3Unlocked, hosts Kenzi Wang, Sachi Kamiya, and Diksha Dutta speak to Jiho about his early days in Web3, starting Sky Mavis and Axie Infinity with Trung Nguyen, Tu Doan, Aleksander Larsen, and Andy Ho. Jiho talks about building in the bear market, being “small and unrecognized” yet confident in their founding team, vision, and community. The team wanted to build a Web3 community that would reward those with the technical knowledge and those willing to learn about the technology. He perfectly sums up their founding principle: “Something that can play into childhood nostalgia is going to be a compelling way to educate people on Web3.” Jiho also talks to us about the obstacles the Axie Infinity team faced while building and maintaining their product. One of those was working with the community on expectations around the company's roadmap as they put out features. In fact, it was one of his biggest learnings: “I think we're always thinking about the intended action that we want to coordinate with the community and the outside world. And how do we ensure that the things that we're launching and saying, that we can actually do that? I think it's more important in Web3… How do you turn your community into your best evangelists? And how do you have them doing the things that are most beneficial and helpful for the network, which benefits everybody? I think an understanding of aligned incentives and different economic models and the cold start problem is something that a lot of Web3 startups have to think about.” Today, Axie Infinity is one of the biggest Play2Earn NFT games in the crypto world. Sky Mavis recently closed a $152 million Series B round eyeing Axie's expansion, which brings the company valuation to $3 billion. Listen to this episode as Jiho discusses the Play2Earn economy, his responsibilities as Chief Growth Officer at Axie Infinity, and more. Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably already heard of Axie Infinity. Chances are you might even know its creator, Sky Mavis. But there is a lot to Sky Mavis nowadays than Axie Infinity – even though Axie in itself is already a huge topic to unpack. In this episode of Edge of NFT, co-founder Jiho Zirlin joins the crew to talk about the latest projects they have been working on now that Axie is on its fifth year. The highlight of this discussion is Ronin, a rogue samurai-inspired network that the guys at Sky Mavis envision to be the go-to place for Web3 game developers to launch their products and games and to grow their communities. Jiho also gives us an update on the Axie universe, where there are now multiple Axie games to choose from. Plus, for our hot topics, we welcome Bob Ras, co-founder of Sologenic, who gives us a sneak peek of their newest project, Coreum, the first EGB blockchain providing fast, cost-efficient, and scalable infrastructure for enterprises. In this episode of the DeFi Download, Piers Ridyard chats with Aleksander Larsen, co-founder of Sky Mavis, makers of Axie Infinity, the largest blockchain game to date, which at its peak had over 2.7 million daily active users. Discussion topics include the criticality of the social aspect of gaming, the challenges of creating an interoperable world within the same IP, and the revolutionary potential of NFTs.Chapters[02:33] The backstory of Axie Infinity and Smooth Love Potion[05:09] Aleksander's background[06:31] If everything had already been made and discovered in the gaming industry, why would Aleksander want to get involved? Just what was it about making video games that still interested him?[07:18] A consumer's natural tendency is to look for faults rather than the things that make a product great. You can't fully appreciate the effort and ingenuity that goes into building something until you switch roles from consumer to creator. Was Aleksander's experience as a game developer reflective of his prior sentiments toward games as a gamer?[10:48] In what ways did Aleksander find CryptoKitties to be flawed?[16:02] What changes have occurred in Axie Infinity's vision as time has progressed? How similar is the current artwork to the original?[17:52] How does Axie Infinity's approach differ from something like Flow Blockchain?[21:46] How did Aleksander maintain his optimism and motivation through Axie Infinity's low points, when the company had only a month's runway, the market was in the middle of a bear run, and members of the community were leaving in droves?[25:28] Why, in Aleksander's opinion, will the introduction of NFTs and the ability to own digital property have such a profound effect on society at large?[27:48] Web 3.0, DeFi, the NFT space, and the gaming industry all place a greater emphasis on achieving community product fit before product market fit. How did Axie Infinity achieve it, and what is the formula, according to Aleksander's knowledge?[30:01] Beyond not being present, what are the most common causes of failure when organising a new community?[33:48] How did Axie Infinity find product market fit, and what factors were instrumental in turning it from an interesting concept into a viable product?[37:31] What happened internally when their own blockchain Ronin was launched, and the number of daily users increased by the thousands?[41:45] How did Aleksander and his team decide what to prioritise when they first started scaling?[45:41] Important lessons[48:33] Aleksander's top tips for entrepreneurs considering developing an NFT-based gameFurther resourcesWebsite: axieinfinity.com Twitter: @AxieInfinity Aleksander's Twitter: @psycheout86 Discord: discord.com/invite/axie

The past couple of years have shown both tremendous growth and highlighted tailwinds for blockchain gaming. In web2, the marketing stack is rich in every area that matters - when a marketer wants to spend on a game, they have many places to do it, they can scale budget up and down as needed, they have the tools to measure how effective the spend is by channel, they can measure revenue events and many other different kinds of downstream activity for days, weeks, months and even years down the line. They have the analytics tools to segment and understand their player personas, and can effectively target these users across a wide variety of channels that serve particular niches. Incredibly accurate LTV models can be built from the data available, and ROAS can be calculated even on a long time horizon. And none of this is true in web3! The anonymity and pseudonymity of web3 makes segmentation and understanding of personas hard if not impossible, and while everything on-chain is by default completely transparent and open, having the wallet and the tokens it contains be the primary identifier is severely limiting. In this episode, your host Niko Vuori talks to three leading minds in web3 marketing - Quinn Campbell (VP of Growth at Sky Mavis), Justin Vogel (Co-Founder at Safary) and Warren Woodward (Co-Founder at Upptic) about the challenges web3 marketers face, the tools that need to be built and the current tactics that need to be employed to grow a web3 game.
