In this episode, we make a triumphant return after being beaten down by scheduling conflicts and illness to deliver one of the longest jumbo-sized episodes of the show ever as we continue our summer spree of mashing up our dual love for roleplaying games and cinema. So join us as we tackle the chonky dragon in the room and look into the world's oldest (and some may say greatest) roleplaying game by checking out its recent box office failure, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, from 2023. Jason stands ready to hold them to task with many grievances that explain its failure to connect with audiences and turn a worthy profit, but opposing him is Dustin with much love for a faithful representation of the Forgotten Realms and an argument that this may be the most honest adaptation of a typical RPG session to ever exist. But before all that, we've got so many movies to dish on, including many recent theater releases and a marathon of the entire Evil Dead franchise in honor of the new entry. And so much more! The EVIL DEAD franchise has spent more than forty years proving that nothing good ever comes from a quiet weekend in the woods, reading Latin out loud, or owning a basement with questionable acoustics. This month, we're opening the Necronomicon and digging through the entire blood-soaked history of the series, from Sam Raimi's original nightmare and Ash's increasingly terrible employment history to the 2013 bloodbath, EVIL DEAD RISE, and the latest entry, EVIL DEAD BURN. Along the way, we're talking Deadites, boomsticks, possessed relatives, medieval detours, chainsaw maintenance, and the remarkable durability of a franchise built almost entirely on bad decisions and industrial quantities of fake blood. Join us as we rank the carnage, praise the practical effects, and once again ignore the very reasonable advice to leave the creepy book alone.

The Evil Dead franchise returns with Evil Dead Burn, and we have plenty to say. We review the newest chapter in the series, compare it to Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise, debate whether the franchise has lost some of the personality that made the originals so memorable, the film's intense bleakness, and discuss where we'd like to see the series go next. Plus, behind the scenes on some of the film's boldest choices, and the crew pays tribute to horror legend Sam Neill. Steve and Sean are flying solo this week, no guest, just the boys catching up and diving into Evil Dead Burn. We open with our July travels then get into the news: remembering Sam Neill, the new Nightmare on Elm Street remake landing at Paramount Primal, and David Howard Thornton joining Behind the Mask 2: The Return of Leslie Vernon. Then it's a full breakdown of Evil Dead Burn, Sébastien Vaniček's entry in the franchise and the first chapter of the new trilogy kicked off after Evil Dead Rise. We get into what we expected walking in, how the Deadite work compares to Rise, the practical effects and eye work, whether the film leans too far into action over horror in spots, and where Burn actually lands once you rewatch the entire franchise back to back. We close out with our full Evil Dead rankings, and yes, we disagree. We are the things that were and shall be again!!!  Sooo... COME HANG OUT!!! Synopsis Alice is a French woman who loves to smoke cigarettes. And her husband, Will, is an asshole. When the two get into a big fight at Will's younger brother Joseph’s birthday bash, Will drunkenly drives full speed into a pedestrian, flipping his vehicle. The car catches fire and Will dies a horrific death. As the family gathers together for the funeral, Alice must face the scariest thing of all…in-laws. But not just any in-laws, but in-laws who are slowly taken over by the forces of Evil who want to burn your flesh off the bone like a candle stick. Review of Evil Dead Burn Evil Dead Burn is a stand alone film, and while it definitely seems to be connecting itself to some events in Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead (2013), it does so in subtle ways. You don’t really even need to see any previous Evil Dead movie to enjoy this film. If you enjoyed the tone and style of Evil Dead Rise, you will find that exact vibe in Evil Dead Burn. It is incredibly violent from start to finish, with almost no breaks in the gore. The movie starts off horrific, is horrific for 2 hours, and then ends horrifically. I had a really good time with this movie, but I was stressed out the entire time. It can be exhausting to watch people get their head bashed in for the entire runtime, so if you are someone who struggles with the really nasty gore scenes in horror movies, I would probably sit this one out. Its hard to say if this film is more violent than the previous 2 in the franchise, but it certainly isn’t less so. The major difference I noticed in Evil Dead Burn was that a lot of the violence was akin to that of a physically abusive partner (throwing you around, punching you, and hitting you with things). The past films have focused a lot more on ripping and tearing the flesh (which of course we do get in this movie) but I think that the type of violence on display in Evil Dead Burn fits really well with its overall theme of overcoming an abusive partner, as well as breaking the cycle of an abusive family. Score 8/10

With those gnarly Evil Dead Burn trailers hitting theaters, we figured it was about time we got caught up on the current state of affairs in Deadite world. Thankfully, Evil Dead Rise (2023) features a trans actor and, at least according to some, a trans character, so it fits our Trans Pride purposes perfectly. A new addition to the story rather than any sort of direct sequel, this flick retreads familiar (and familial) ground while exploring a new urban setting. That's right: Forget a cabin in the woods (at least for the most part), because we've uncovered a new Naturom Demonto under an apartment building in Downtown Los Angeles. We're talking lore, giving Lee Cronin another chance, and recalling our own potentially cursed missteps on a new Spooky Tuesday. This month, we're donating all of our proceeds to non-profit organizations dedicated to helping and protecting the trans community. You can help by participating in our Instagram fundraiser benefiting Transgender Law Center, joining our Patreon, or streaming both old and new episodes through the end of June. Hey Horror Fans! The Book of the Dead is having a moment. With Evil Dead: Burn dropping this July, Evil Dead: Wrath officially locked in for 2028, and Lee Cronin's The Mummy keeping the Rise director in the conversation…it felt like the right time to go back to one of our earliest episodes!! Back in March of 2021 we sat down with George Reinblatt, the creator of Evil Dead the Musical, to talk about what it takes to take one of horror's most beloved franchises and turn it into a full blown stage production (complete with a Splatter Zone). We get into the origins of the show, its Off-Broadway run, why local productions keep popping up every Halloween around the world, and the long, weird, wonderful history of horror and comedy sharing a stage. Plus as always we open with some quick thoughts on the Evil Dead franchise's current moment, some horror news, and close things out with our latest Mostly Horror Recommendations of the Week! Grab your poncho… it's gonna get groovy.. Come Hang Out!!! Writer-director Lee Cronin joins No Film School to discuss how he approached reimagining The Mummy through the lens of family trauma, mystery, and body horror. In conversation with GG Hawkins, Cronin breaks down the emotional architecture behind effective horror, the challenge of staging fear in broad daylight, and the way Irish storytelling, personal experience, and practical effects continue to shape his work. He also reflects on building a long-term creative partnership, collaborating with horror powerhouses like Jason Blum and James Wan, and the discipline required to keep refining a film all the way through the edit. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Lee Cronin discuss... How Cronin infused The Mummy with mystery, family drama, and horror Why broad daylight can make horror feel even more unsettling The emotional groundwork required to make gore and shock land with audiences How themes from The Hole in the Ground evolved into The Mummy Why character is always the engine of fear in Cronin's films How Cronin thinks about the “contract” he makes with audiences from the earliest story stage The practical and creative lessons he learned from years of making corporate videos and commercials What it was like collaborating with Jack Reynor, Jason Blum, and James Wan How shooting in Ireland and Spain helped shape the scale and texture of the film Advice for emerging filmmakers on collaborators, restraint, and cutting what does not work Memorable Quotes: “Writing is not hard at all. Knowing what to write is incredibly difficult.” “Nothing is more exciting to me than watching something I've created with an audience and hearing them vocalize, scream, drop the popcorn, whatever it might be.” “If something doesn't work, don't leave it there.” “Never be afraid.” Guests: Lee Cronin Resources: Lee Cronin's The Mummy on IMDb Vote for No Film School's Webby-nominated explainer video Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web: No Film School Facebook: No Film School on Facebook Twitter: No Film School on Twitter YouTube: No Film School on YouTube Instagram: No Film School on Instagram
