It's easy to take the imagery of Jesus' words literally, especially to the rich man asking how to have eternal life. Rev. Emily Penfield illustrates the full context in this episode. One time a guy came up to me while playing at Mayo Clinic, thanking me for my playing, and he said that he was one of Dino's assistant. He was from New York, and had come all the way to Arizona to go to Mayo Clinic. He told me that he went to college with Dino, but he didn't tell me his name. It was nice to meet someone who was so close to this arranger who I appreciate so much. I play a lot of his arrangments. This hymn is based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian. Then it was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. It was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades. This is also something I wanted to play for the family of Jeffrey D'Aleo. He passed away at the age of 58, on February 4, 2021. His wife Michelle Turner is my cousin. Many thoughts and prayers to her and her family. As we come upon Easter, this piece is a good reminder that God not only sent Jesus here and let him be crucified on a cross, but then he raised Him from the dead!

The young churches in Crete lacked biblical leadership, so the apostle Paul encourages Titus to “appoint elders in every town” (Titus 1:5) and gives him a picture of the kinds of leaders he should be looking for. While not everybody will be called to serve in an official leadership role in the church, the qualities and characteristics of an elder should be the pursuit of us all. 1. Extolling the virtues of God's word and the attributes of his character, the psalmist in Psalm 33 gives reason for their hope and trust in God. By growing in their understanding of who God is and what he does, God's people can look to the future with greater confidence and comfort. We know that the Christian life is about more than just an hour on Sunday. To grow in Christ, we seek to apply God's word in our lives and look to the whole body of Christ for encouragement and exhortation.1. A new song (vs. 1-3) a. Grow in understanding (vs. 4-5) b. When God calls us to follow Him, he is calling us to something greater than we could ever ask or imagine. Too often, however, we are satisfied by following the call of our own selfish heart. In the call of Elisha we see how God's call leads to something greater, even though at first it seems to be exactly the opposite. Elisha was a wealthy man, but to be faithful to God's call he gave up his wealth. Elisha was a man of authority, but he gave up his authority to serve Elijah for 18 years. As Elisha found following the call of God was greater than he could have imagined, every one of us must be faithful to follow the specific call God has given us. 1. The journey to something greater (1 Kings 19:19-21) a. Start with an unexpected party (vs. 19-20) b. Marked by complete surrender and humble service (v. 21) c. It is a fool who thinks he or she can bring security to their future by amassing earthly wealth, and it is a great evil to amass that wealth by abusing others and living only for one's own satisfaction.
