For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, belonging to a lodge or fraternal organization was a normal part of American community life. In towns large and small, men and women joined groups that offered friendship, social activity, financial assistance, insurance benefits, funeral support, and a place to form connections outside the home and workplace. Some of those organizations are still familiar today. Freemasons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, the Grange, Knights of Columbus, Grand Army of the Republic posts, Rebekah lodges, Woodmen organizations, and many others once had local chapters scattered across the country. There were also ethnic societies, religious groups, veterans' organizations, mutual-benefit associations, and small local orders whose names may be almost forgotten now. For genealogists, these groups offer a different way to understand an ancestor. A census tells us who was living in the household. A deed tells us who owned the property. A probate file shows what someone left behind. Lodge records can reveal the people an ancestor knew, the organizations that were important to the family, and the community ties that shaped everyday life. Sometimes they can even explain who stepped forward when illness, financial trouble, or death affected the household. The first step is recognizing that a connection existed... Modern Woodmen of America is the third-largest fraternal benefit society in terms of assets and has grown to over 700,000 members. The name was inspired by pioneer woodmen who “cleared forests to build homes and communities and provide security for their families.”

Prison can be a hard place, filled with people who have committed some of the worst crimes. As we'll learn today, prison can also be a place of redemption, where people find God. It's not an easy conversation to have, and our guest today knows that better than any. He went from being in prison and thinking that he would be there until he died to a free man who now preaches from the pulpit.Howie Close has spent the last eleven years as a pastor at Woodmen Valley Chapel, overseeing the church's statewide prison ministry. For over twenty years prior to that, he was incarcerated in the same prisons where he now carries the keys. And now he has the privilege of ministering there with his teams. Edye started with at HETRA in 1991 as a volunteer, and was made the Executive Director soon after. She was certified as an instructor in 1995, and received her Hippotherapy Clinical Specialist Certification in 2016. Edye has a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from Creighton University. In 2007, she was awarded the PATH, Intl. Region 7 Instructor of the Year Award. In 2013, Edye received the “Caring for Others” award from Woodmen of the World. The "Not Just A Pony Ride" podcast is produced by HETRA University.
