VYS0061 | Talking About Talking About Talking About UFOs - Show notes The truth is out there... sometimes... maybe... well, Hine and Buckley just aren't sure. UFOs, UAPs, Flying Saucers, Alien Spacecraft, whatever you think they are, you don't know for sure - and if you think you do know for sure, it's a sure sign you don't. What you do know for sure is that you are told a lot of different things about them by a lot of different people: abductees spinning stories of high strangeness, senators pressuring whistle-blowers for information in congress, devoutly religious authors telling tales of angels and demons, folklorists and scholars of comparative religion painting vivid pictures of ancient beings dressed up in the skin of Technicolor sci-fi nightmares... no-one agrees and everyone is out to prove that their interpretation is the right interpretation - but what does any of it actually mean? In this episode Hine and Buckley don't analyse the verisimilitude of the stories or the veracity of the storytellers but instead examine the discourse around the phenomena or more accurately the discourse around the discourse around UFOs. The mechanisms with which people might think about this topic and the reasons that they may think in that way. The conversation around UFOs is big business, a lot of people making a lot of money - but who are these people and what happens to that money? Where did it all start? Was it Peter Levenda that stealthily laid the ground work over the last 50 years to shape the UFO movement as we know it today? Why would people lie about this stuff? Why should you believe some conspiracy theorist warning you of the terrible dangers of the existential crisis that UFOs pose anymore than you should trust some conspiracy theorist warning you of the terrible dangers of vaccines and their link to childhood autism?... and if the people who are trying to take control of the discourse are lying, overly-gullible or deluded, then is there really any truth out there at all? Let's talk about joy. Releasing the demons of expectation, the pressures of desire, the need to justify sporting existence through results alone. To be fair, this all sounds a bit new age, a bit woowoo, counter to the traditional muted celebration of living the grind, suffering to succeed. Increasingly, sportspeople are eschewing the concept of the strong silent athlete assassin, an unsmiling, full focussed, dead shark eyed harbinger of your defeat. I believe this comes from the acceleration of women's sport. Over the last 25 odd years, I've watched the rise and rise of their game. The increase in media coverage, the sponsorship, the exponential growth in income, the positive narrative change, the acceptance that women's sport is not men's sport in a different uniform. Wāhine bring a change in perception. Their game is neither better nor worse. Comparative size, strength, speed are no longer the determiners of quality. The paradigm adjustment is bringing a new and uplifting look at sport. It's bringing a whole new set of achievement parameters. Results are still incredibly important; they are after all the reason to play at the highest level. They are still the why, but the how has evolved. In my years of broadcasting, women bring a glow of positivity to their chosen sport and choose to express that. They speak freely of their ups and downs, wholly unafraid to bring emotion to the fore. By and large they are in touch with their inner spirit and are not encumbered by showing it. An absolute of sport is this: loss is not only inevitable, it is the dominant result in sporting theatre. There is one champion. There is one gold medallist, there is one world record holder. The rest are merely cogs in the wheel. To travel the distance, there must be joy, if not, the exercise is pointless. Strive to win, play the game. You want to win, but don't need it. Your experience has given you everything. Never die." - Sounds exhausting. This is not how Hine and Buckley do Halloween anymore. So, instead of re-living their twenties, or the Lost Decade, as they call it, they talk to Dr Sorcha Ní Fhlainn about the greatest horror movie of the 1980s, or the Lost Boys, as they call it. Sorcha is a film critic, a writer, an academic - a Reader in Film Studies with a specialism in American Film at Manchester Metropolitan University specialising in Gothic Studies and Horror Cinema, with a particular focus on Vampires - and an all-round legend who helps Hine and Buckley get their teeth stuck deep into Joel Schumacher's 1987 masterpiece without getting lost in the gory details (but never over-looking the Corey details).
