10-year-old Graceyn Hollingsworth has become an internet viral sensation. Her popular YouTube children's channel, "Gracie's Corner," features Black and brown animated characters reciting remixed nursery rhymes, soulful vintage poems and original songs in video form. Her father, Javoris Hollingsworth, came up with the idea during the pandemic and noticed the lack of diversity, especially in educational tools for kids. But with so much uncertainty around social media and digital entrepreneurship, are the financial sacrifices worth the risk? And what do you say to parents who support programs like this, but they are still concerned about the amount of screen time that children of a certain age are spending on the internet or watching television? Join us as host Eddie Robinson speaks unguarded with members of the Hollingsworth family – the content creators behind "Gracie's Corner." Javoris, along with his wife, Arlene Gordon-Hollingsworth and Gracie herself stop by our I SEE U studios for a candid conversation about the triumphs and challenges of developing such an inclusive brand of this nature. The Houston-based educators will also share insight on new, upcoming features and details on a live tour in the works.
Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world, and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, we celebrate May the Fourth Be With You and the sweet sounds of Star Wars with two GIANT guests, Supervising Sound Editor at Skywalker Sound and actor MatthewWood (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, The Book of Boba Fett) and composer JosephShirley (CreedIII, TheMandalorian) Landing the apprenticeship of his dreams with sound effects legend and Oscar winner Ben Burt, MatthewWood took to sound editing like a Mon Calamari to water. And, like the snap hiss of a lightsaber or the twangy ripple of an Imperial blaster Matthew hyper-jumped to Star Wars royalty with sound supervisor credits that include a ton of Star Wars AND some quality character work as the voice of “General Grievous” and the modern physical embodiment of our favorite majordomo, “Bib Fortuna” among many more. And if that isn't enough to milk your moof, we sat down with composer JosephShirley at WonderCon2023 to talk about landing his Star Wars dream job and scoring, what we declare, as the greatest Star Wars scene of the Disney era. You don't want to miss this! Join Grim Shea, Jimmy The Gent and Marke as we beep, boop, pew, pew and Wilhelm scream the heck out of this May the 4th! MTFBWY!

SOUND is a powerfully UNDERappreciated component of nature. It makes sense that our nervous system would be so reactive to sound as we are animals and thus being able to hear a predator is definitely in our best interest. Thus our auditory system alerts and orients us. The challenge is that we have created cities and transportation that have many sound creating elements. And every time our ears here a sound it can cause a small stress response. These micro-stresses over time on slow drop can cause chronic stress … according to Roberta Sapolsky. There are very few places in the US that provide sound breaks to human ears. So think about the effects that that noise must have on animals. Yosemite quote - 5-decibels is enough to reduce the distance at which prey species can hear a predator approaching by 45%"A large study published in Lancet 2005 funded by the EU on several thousands of elementary school children living near major airports in UK, Spain and Netherlands, “They found significant impacts on reading comprehension, memory and hyperactivity. The results were linear: for every 5-decibel increase in noise, reading scores dropped the equivalent of a two-month delay, so that kids were almost a year behind in neighborhoods that were 20 edibles louder” - Florence WilliamsThese constant sound stressors can also cause elevation in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. The World Health Organization attributes thousands of deaths per year in Europe to heart attack and stroke caused by high levels of background noise.Nature sounds however, have a calming effect on the nervous system, especially the sounds of running water, breezes and bird calls. There are European countries that employ the use of these sounds by piping them in bathrooms, work spaces and on the radio. These natural sounds are called soundscapes and there are quite a few researchers who believe they can be used as a more of stress relieving medicine. The point is that the more you can listen to these natural sounds the more relaxed your body will be and thus will improve how you feel, your health and ideally make you happier too! Please check out Florence Williams' website HERE, she is incredibly knowledgeable and has researched other topics outside of nature as well.
