During the legislative session, Texas legislators filed a staggering 141 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills, solidifying Texas as a leader in proposed discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community. In this episode, Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas, the largest LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization in Texas, provides an overview of the 88th Texas Legislature, highlighting both the victories and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. The efforts of the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies were not in vain. They managed to defeat 134 out of the 141 bills, marking a significant triumph and reflecting the power of advocacy and collective action. But a few bills passed with devastating consequences for the community. These victories demonstrate the resilience and dedication of those working towards equality and justice for all. Ricardo also highlights the importance of Akira Ross's story to understand the harmful impact of homophobic and transphobic rhetoric on the personal safety of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Tune in to this episode, and let's continue to support and amplify the voices of organizations like Equality Texas and work together towards a more inclusive and equitable future for the LGBTQIA+ community. We'd love your support:Donate on StripeSupport us on PatreonJoin our newsletterLeave us a rating and reviewShare our podcast with a friend

While we thought the 87th Texas Legislative Session had reached it's end on May 31st, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he would be holding a 30-day Special Session with 11 items on the agenda in July. In a call to fight for our democracy, 59 Democrats fled the House floor and headed to Washington, D.C., effectively breaking quorum and preventing Gov. Abbott from passing the bills he intended to prioritize this session. While House Dems have temporarily blocked the progression of this session, the governor is entitled to call as many special sessions as he deems fit. Confused as to how this impacts the Texas Lege?? Sen. Tom Kaine illustrates how Democrats must be talking. TX Rep. Senfronia Thompson explains exit to DC. Psaki did not pull her punches on Doocy this time. Once again, Peter Doocy asked a silly question. This one, though, had danger and irresponsibility associated with it. Jen Psaki, in her way, slammed him. Peter Doocy continued an interchange with Jen Psaki with an inappropriate Fox News-like question. Then again, he represents Fox News. The Right-Wing is still taken aback about Jen Psaki calling out online vaccine misinformers and liars. It may have hit too close to home. Note he is reading the question. One wonders if his masters forced it or it was just his continued intellectual being. Representative Senfronia Thompson is the Dean of the Texas House. She is an institution in her own right. And she fled Texas with her cohort to protect every Texan's vote. She explains! Thompson enumerated the draconian nature of the bill. It included creating inconveniences like eliminating 24-hour drive-through voting, arcane signature verification, and vote-by-mail re-registration. Senator Tim Kaine used some factually false statements from McConnell to drive the Democratic message every American will want and understand. But there is much more! MSNBC's Ayman Mohyeldin played a statement from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell where he made various hypocritical, lying, and misleading claims. One would hope more journalists would correct in real-time. Sen. Tim Kaine points out that an inconvenient truth about Republican vs Democratic legislation. He out that it is more likely that the Democratic reconciliation bill would be paid for and not the bipartisan bill. Here's why! --- If you like what we do please do the following!
