Pride Month 2024 sees an incredible expansion of Pride celebrations and activism across the state - much of that in rural and small-town Texas, which until just recently, was near-unthinkable. As we know, over the past few sessions, Texas has also set new standards for legislative bigotry and cruelty towards its LGBTQ+ community. So, the push for equality and equity has never been stronger - while the opposition has never been more hateful. We welcome two of the community's most determined advocates to talk Texas Pride, both returning to the pod: Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas, and Jeff Strater, DNC Member-Elect, Democratic/SDEC Committeeman and former president of Texas Stonewall Democrats. 34 - Go Play in the Puddles with Ricardo Martinez Ricardo Martinez II has one of the biggest 9-1-1 related podcasts out there. He's the founder of the #IAM911 movement and the host of the Dare to be Great virtual events for 911 professionals, plus he loves to play in puddles with his kids. He's my guest today on the podcast...   ABOUT THE GUEST Ricardo Martinez II is a creative individual who is using his skills in writing, design, and podcasting to tell the stories of those he works with. For 13 years he has answered the call of a 9-1-1 dispatcher and recently accepted a new position with INdigital telecom as a 9-1-1 systems trainer and designer. Throughout his years in dispatch he was able to go to school where he received an Associate's in web development through Baker College, a Bachelor's in graphic design through Full Sail University as well as a Master's in new media journalism in March of 2013. Before starting his Master's program he launched Jabber Log, a blog about current events and his life stories. His personal blog posts became a hit with his audience and one such post even appeared on WordPress.com's “Freshly Pressed” section on their main page. From there his blog opened doors that included promotions for businesses, artists and musicians. Once he started his Master's program he began doing multimedia stories that can be found on his YouTube channel. Through this program he discovered podcasting. It spawned a series that tells the stories of those in the field of emergency services. He then created a podcast version of a segment on his blog called Within the Trenches, a section of writing based on his experience as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. He launched Kickstarter campaign to raise $1,500 for the equipment needed for a show that would feature the stories of 9-1-1 dispatchers. The campaign was funded and can now be found at www.thejabberlog.com. His goal is to tell the story of everyone he meets. “I believe that everyone has a story to tell. I want to do everything I can to bring that story to life.”  - Ricardo Connect with Ricardo:  https://www.liinks.co/wttpodcast Get the book:  Imagine Listening: Your worst day is our everyday (#IAM911)     +++++ FIRST RESPONDER WELLNESS PODCAST/PTSD911 MOVIE Web site:  https://ptsd911movie.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ptsd911movie/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ptsd911movie/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClQ8jxjxYqHgFQixBK4Bl0Q Purchase the PTSD911 film for your public safety agency or organization: https://ptsd911.myshopify.com/products/toolkit The First Responder Wellness Podcast is a production of ConjoStudios, LLC Copyright ©2024 ConjoStudios, LLC All rights reserved.

Hosts Mike Pecci and Lance A. Williams take you on a wild ride in their latest episode, where they dive into the eerie world of horror and genre screenwriting with the Latinxorcists. From the get-go, it's clear this isn't your average chat about writing. Mike and Lance are battling against the thumping speakers at Fontainbleau's Club LIV, setting the stage as they sit down with founders Jose Vicente Chavez, Ricardo Martinez, and Alfredo Hernandez. You can practically feel the energy crackling in the air. This episode is one of the raw honest ones. The Latinxorcists aren't just here to talk about horror and genre; they're here to dissect the writing process, warts and all. They delve into everything from giving and taking notes to the delicate art of working in writing rooms. And let's not forget about dealing with egos – a topic they tackle head-on with humor and humility. Amidst the laughter and lively banter, the Latinxorcists touch on something deeper: the importance of creating spaces for Latinx storytellers. In an industry that often overlooks their voices, they're carving out a place where Latinx stories can thrive. One of the highlights of the episode is the therapeutic discussion on unpacking trauma and overcoming fear. It's a reminder that writing isn't just about crafting tales of terror – it's about tapping into our humanity and showing compassion, both to ourselves and to others. --------------------------------------- Sponsored by Puget Systems: Follow ILPW IG: Mike's IG: @mikepecci Lance's IG: @golancego LatinXorcist IG: https://www.instagram.com/latinxorcists/

Every Monday morning, I'll be sending you five items that I hope will start your week off right, give you a smile, make you laugh, make you think, and just make you feel good.Because the current state of our world—and particularly our country's politics—is, well, pretty fraught, I figure we can all use a breather from stressful news items and pay a bit of attention to some of the good happening around us.It's called Five Things You Should Know, and I hope it makes your Monday mornings a little brighter and more bearable moving forward.1. Caitlin Clark Becomes All-Time NCAA ScorerWhen Caitlin Clark was in 2nd grade, she wanted to play competitive basketball, but her father couldn't find a girls league. So, she joined a boys team at her grade level and wound up winning the state tournament that year. Some parents on other teams protested that girls shouldn't be permitted to play on boys' teams.Yesterday, Ms. Clark became the NCAA's all-time leading scorer, for both women and men, when she overtook Pete “Pistol Pete” Maravich, breaking the legend's iconic record that had stood for more than half a century. This is the crowning individual achievement for Ms. Clark, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest college basketball players of all-time. Along the way, she's won every award at the collegiate level and shattered attendance records in arenas across the country.2. The Voice of the NYC Subway System is a Trans WomanSince 2009, if you've taken the subway in New York City, chances are pretty high that you've heard an authoritative yet comforting voice guide passengers around town and offer friendly advice. For millions of New Yorkers, that voice has become something of an institution in their daily lives. It belongs to Bernie Wagenblast, who initially built a long career as a radio journalist before being hired for her voice by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority more than 15 years ago. She also now records announcements for New Jersey Transit and the Kennedy and Newark airports.Ms. Wagenblast came out publicly as a trans woman in 2022. Her journey is extraordinary and makes me smile.I deeply admire her.3. Medical School Will Be Tuition Free After $1 Billion DonationLast week, Ruth Gottesman, a former professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, announced to that institution's student body that tuition will be now be free, thanks to her donation of $1 billion, thought to be one of the largest individual financial contributions to a college or university in history. Dr. Gottesman credited her husband, David “Sandy” Gottesman, a Wall Street investment banker and former board member at Berkshire Hathaway, for the enormous amount of the donation. He passed away in 2022. They had been married for 72 years. The video of the audience reaction to Dr. Gottesman's announcement is a must-see.4. CVS and Walgreens Will Begin Selling Abortion Pills This MonthOn Friday, the two largest pharmacy chains in the country announced they would begin selling mifepristone, the abortion pill, in its stores this month. It will initially be offered at Walgreens pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, and California and at CVS pharmacies in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Both chains plan to expand access to the pill in a slow rollout beyond those states over time where abortion is still legal. It will not be accessible by mail. There's currently a pending case regarding mifepristone on the Supreme Court docket that's shaping up to have far-ranging consequences for reproductive freedom, FDA regulations, and much more. A date for oral arguments in that case has not yet been set.5. I'm Speaking at the 2024 SXSW Conference & Festival This WeekendEvery March, a few hundred thousand folks gather in Austin, Texas for the better part of two weeks to take part in the latest and most trendy topics in politics, tech, education, music, film, and television. It's an enormous and exciting gathering, and I'm lucky to be taking part in it this year, alongside Prof. Robin Maril, Willamette University School of Law; Andy Marra, Exec. Director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund; and Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas, the state's largest LGBTQ rights organization. The four of us will be discussing LGBTQ rights in the context of the 2024 election in a panel entitled “Defending Democracy: LGBTQ Activism and Power in 2024.”Unfortunately, it will not be live-streamed, but I encourage folks attending SXSW to come to our session and learn more about our goals in the fight for equality this year.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Caroline Duble and Nneka Iheanacho of Avow, an unapologetic abortion advocacy organization, speak to us about the state of abortion care. In Texas, abortion is completely banned with the exception of a life or death scenario with the pregnant person and there is no rape or incest exception. To be clear, providers are criminalized, and the charge could be a first-degree felony. Beyond these concerns, there are also the less obvious effects of increased surveillance and the general fear created by the current laws. A reminder: an abortion is a procedure you can have when you no longer want to be pregnant and there are two kinds: medication and procedural. Good bills: HB12 which extends Medicaid to one-year post pregnancy and HB300 which removed sales tax on menstrual care items and adult diapers. Nneka gives a great rundown of the empowered work happening on the local level to support vulnerable communities. Bad bills: Came in the form of budget items. For instance, an increase was given to crisis pregnancy centers that are fake clinics and this funding now stands at $140 million of our state budget. SB24 codifies alternatives to abortion, and it's now called Texas Thriving Families. HB17 reduces the local control of district attorneys. HB1575 establishes a screening process for collecting data from pregnant people. Finally, all the anti-LGBTQ legislation was bad and more can be heard in an earlier episode from Ricardo Martinez of Equality Texas. If you're wondering how to help, plug into local groups. It can be as simple as signing up for updates so you are aware of what's happening. The efforts of the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies were not in vain. From the Latino Festival in O'Fallon, the Hispanic festival in Florissant, dance clubs in mid-town and cuisine from restaurants representing many different countries, St. Louis' Latino culture is booming and is a vibrant reflection of our growing Hispanic population. The median age of Hispanic St. Louisans is 25 compared to 36 of the general population and the percentage of Latinos in the region roughly doubled. Most of the growth in the past 20 years has come in Madison, St. Clair, St. Charles and St. Louis counties.  In St. Louis, Latino residents now account for more than 5% of the city's population. The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce purposely creates a safe and open environment for people that have similar backgrounds of experiences. The Chamber has specific tools that address some of the needs of the Hispanic community in our region. The staff is bilingual in Spanish and English, so they can help entrepreneurs in their preferred language.  Like other chambers, the Hispanic Chamber does not only serve Latino businesses, it serves everyone. [WLHA 011]: We Live Here Auténtico! | Ricardo Martinez | DACA Dreams Realized Today we are talking to Ricardo Martinez. Born in Mexico, Ricardo is a DACA recipient who grew up in Illinois. His passion for helping Spanish speakers with financial literacy is fueled by his entrepreneurial journey and of course, his love for St. Louis. Ricardo came to the United States when he was five years old and spent most of his life in central Illinois. At heart, he would say he was a “mid-Midwesterner”.  He never really understood how different he was different until later. Ricardo's parents were immigrants and they jumped at the chance for deferred action. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, also known as DACA, enabled roughly 832,881 eligible young adults work lawfully, attend school, and plan their lives without the threat of deportation.  It provides temporary relief from deportation (deferred action) and grants authorization to work for young undocumented immigrants. For Ricardo's parents, it meant their children would have temporary, renewable permission to be in the United States.  Meanwhile, they had to learn how to make things work without documentation of their own.  Every two years they essentially lived day-to-day without knowing, for sure, if DACA would continue or not. For Ricardo, DACA granted the opportunity to keep moving forward. According to the Migration Policy Institute, more than 1.3 million U.S. residents were eligible for DACA as originally implemented and it is estimated that the average DACA recipient arrived in the United States in 1999 at the age of 7. More than one-third of DACA recipients (37 percent) arrived before the age of 5. Ricardo's background, culture and journey are an integral part of what led him to help the Hispanic community. Ricardo founded JuntosAdelante.com, a personal finance website dedicated to helping Spanish speakers understand the American personal finance system. He then founded CentralJA, a digital marketing agency focused on helping Spanish speaking business pivot their business online. What does living Auténtico mean to you? Living Auténtico means understanding who you are and being able to share that with everyone. It means understanding and being able to embrace that you can be yourself, learn who you are and keep building on that. You do not have to be what everyone refers you to be. The governor and attorney general of Texas are ruthlessly persecuting families with trans kids. They have declared that if a family supports their transgender child, that they are to be investigated for child abuse, and the child is to be removed from their home. Two disctrict attorneys for the counties that include Dallas and Houston have refused to adhere to the order. A judge in a third county put a hold on the order for that particular county. The order is active in all other Texas counties and families are being targetted. Today we talk to Ricardo Martinez, the CEO of Equality Texas.  Equality Texas is the main organization on the front lines in Texas fighting for the rights of LGBTQ+ families.  Ricardo joined Equality Texas as its CEO in December of 2019. Prior to Equality Texas, Ricardo served at Stand for Children where he lead a national organizing and constituent engagement effort for five years. Immediately prior to his tenure at Stand for Children, he spent several years with GLSEN; initially as Senior Manager of Field Services on the national team in NYC and later as the President of the Phoenix Chapter. Under Ricardo's leadership, GLSEN Phoenix was an instrumental coalition partner in overturning Arizona's “no promo homo” law, which prohibited K-12 schools from including LGBTQ representation, content, and history in their curriculum. Equality Texas emerged in 2006 from the previous Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas. It reflected the strength and diversity of the coalition galvanized during the campaign to defeat proposition #2, Texas' so-called “defense of marriage” amendment to the state constitution. Equality Texas is now the state's leading advocacy organization defending the rights of LGBTQ Texans against attack, with tens of thousands of members across the state. With Co-host Brody Levesque

Texas HB 25 - Banning transgender student athletes -- Documentary "North by Current"We speak with local transgender activist Diamond Stylz about Texas House Bill 25, the bill banning transgender participation in student sports. We discuss her experience and how this bill will affect LGBT Texans. The Texas House passed HB 25, an anti-transgender sports ban targeting innocent school-age children. Equality Texas, the largest statewide organization solely dedicated to securing full equality for LGBTQ+ Texans, responded: “The passage of HB 25 is a hateful, targeted attack on transgender people living in Texas,” said Ricardo Martinez (he/him), Chief Executive Officer of Equality Texas. “Extremists in our Legislature have continuously leveraged cruel rhetoric and rampant misinformation to coordinate this attack on the transgender community — young children in particular — and have sent a clear message that Texas is not a safe place for them to live. GUEST: Diamond Stylz https://www.equalitytexas.org/for-immediate-release-equality-texas-statement-on-house-passage-of-hb-25/We speak Madsen Minax about the film "North by Current" playing at the Rice Cinema on Friday November 12th at 7:30pm. After the inconclusive death of his young niece, filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax returns to his rural Michigan hometown, preparing to make a film about a broken criminal justice system. Instead, he pivots to excavate the depths of generational addiction, Christian fervor, and trans embodiment. Lyrically assembled images, decades of home movies, and ethereal narration form an idiosyncratic and poetic undertow that guide a viewer through lifetimes and relationships. Like the relentless Michigan seasons, the meaning of family shifts, as Madsen, his sister, and his parents strive tirelessly to accept each other. Poised to incite more internal searching than provide clear statements or easy answers, NORTH BY CURRENT dives head first into the challenges of creating identity, the agony of growing up, and the ever-fickle nuances of family.GUEST: Madsen Minax http://www.northbycurrent.com/
