As the COVID-19 pandemic began to unravel, we saw an increase in barriers to abortion access due to the widespread shutdown of clinics across the nation. Even at a time when healthcare was limited due to social distancing measures, politicians, such as Governor Greg Abbott, made receiving healthcare even more challenging by deeming abortion as "non-essential" and passing bills, such as SB8, during the 87th Texas Legislative Session. In this episode of the CHEcast, we talk to Kat, a public health champion, abortion rights activist, and member of Buckles Bunnies Fund—an organization established during the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic to fund abortions and keep them accessible. In the last 50 years, we have experienced two big pandemics, the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s-1990s, and the current pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. While these two viruses may be different in transmission mode and in the symptoms they generate, they do have important similarities: the fear instilled in the population, stigma, and politicization. In this week's episode of the CHECast, epidemiologist, Mireya Treviño, takes a deep dive into each of these pandemics, how they began, how society responded, and the disproportionate impact each crisis had on marginalized communities. While we thought the 87th Texas Legislative Session had reached it's end on May 31st, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he would be holding a 30-day Special Session with 11 items on the agenda in July. In a call to fight for our democracy, 59 Democrats fled the House floor and headed to Washington, D.C., effectively breaking quorum and preventing Gov. Abbott from passing the bills he intended to prioritize this session. While House Dems have temporarily blocked the progression of this session, the governor is entitled to call as many special sessions as he deems fit. Confused as to how this impacts the Texas Lege??
